Movie Review:
Rio — Rating: 4 STARS
This film is totally delightful and brilliant with jokes. If you liked “Ice Age” you’re sure to enjoy this one. The adventures these characters get into are hilarious. It is wonderfully cast and beautifully animated. There’s a huge range of characters which keep the film engaging and fun — Linda, Blue, Tulio (the bird scientist), Pedro and Nico (the two slick birds); and, of course Raphael, the Toucan with a heart of gold.

To sum up, Rio is just a good escape. It is vibrant and colorful which makes for a great family film since there is always something interesting going on. Granted it may not be a Disney classic. Nonetheless, kids won’t be bored and neither will the adults.

Fierce fighting continues in besieged Libyan city
(CNN) — Moammar Gadhafi’s forces continued fierce shelling in the western Libyan city of Misrata Thursday destroying a cement factory and cargo containers. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Gadhafi forces targeting food warehouses in an effort to starve people into submission in the besieged city. Delegates from Arab and African nations and NATO offered support to Libyan rebels at a summit in Qatar.

China bans time travel for television
Hong Kong, China (CNN) — The new guidelines released by the State Administration of Radio Film and Television in China borders on the surreal — or, rather, an attack against the surreal. New guidelines as of March 31 discourages plot lines that contain elements of “fantasy, time-travel, random compilations of mythical stories, bizarre plots, absurd techniques, even propagating feudal superstitions, fatalism and reincarnation, ambiguous moral lessons, and a lack of positive thinking.” Time travel goes against Chinese heritage while the rest (myths, superstitions and reincarnation) are all questionable.

Japan elevates nuclear crisis from 5 to 7 while quake toll rises to 13,456
(CNN) — The death toll from Japan’s historic earthquake and tsunami neared the 13,500 mark Thursday, police reported. Total reported after Japan elevates the nuclear crisis there from a 5 to a 7, same level as Chernobyl.

Despite Calls to Cut Spending, States Still Rely Heavily on Federal Funds
(ABC) — For all the rhetoric against federal spending and encroachments on states’ autonomy, governors rely heavily on federal funds, especially given the slow economy. Not one governor turned away all the federal stimulus money their states received and, despite opposition to the Democrats’ health care plan, governors continue to take in the money that law allocated.

Even Texas took more than $12 billion in stimulus funds in 2010 despite Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who led Republican governors in denouncing what he says is federal government stepping on state sovereignty. Texas is very much dependent on federal funds, given its $23 billion deficit. Federal dollars make up about one-third of the state’s budget, and in 2009, it received more than $35 billion from the federal government, second only to California and New York.

First Applebee’s now Allegations of Alcohol at Olive Garden
Lakeland, FL (NY Daily News) — Florida woman said her 2-year-old son had to be taken to the hospital last month after he was served a white wine cocktail at Olive Garden. Jill Van Heest said she was eating with her son, Nikolai, at a Lakeland, FL Olive Garden on March 31 when her son started to act odd after finishing what she thought was orange juice. He was visibly drunk she added. His eyes were dilated and red, and he was getting loud. She learned the juice was actually a sangria cocktail which not only contains orange and pineapple juice but also white wine.

The Van Heest’s report of the Olive Garden incident comes less than a week after a Detroit Applebee’s admission of accidentally serving a margarita to a 15-month-old boy. Both children received an I.V. to flush the alcohol out of their system and released within a few hours. However, the doctors found that the blood alcohol content of .10 in each child was higher than the legal limit for an adult to drive a car.

Both Olive Garden and Applebee have expressed their apologies regarding the incident and will be making changes to address this from every occurring again.

Severe Storms in 2 States – Death toll Rises to 7

Florida GOP employs new tactics to push ANTIUNION BILL
Tallahassee (St. Petersburg Times) — A Senate committee Wednesday barely passed a bill to weaken the political power of Florida’s public employee unions as Republican Party leaders continue the pressure on a handful of moderate Republican senators who could stand in the way of final passage.

His goal: to put into law a bill that would ban public employee unions from collecting dues through payroll deductions and require unions to obtain permission from members each year to use their dues for political activity.

Unions fear the provisions add a layer of complexity that will discourage people from joining their ranks.

Sen. Nancy Detert, a Venice Republican, said “This is a distraction. We’re reforming everything ... and yet this bill will get all kinds of heat and upset people for NOTHING. Furthermore, this has more to do with politics than it has to do with policy. And, if they all went to Georgia, we’d still have a quorum.” In other words, they are not necessary or needed to be present for business to be conducted.

Sen. Steve Oelrich (Gainesville) who said, “I haven’t made up my mind.” Sen. Jim Norman (Tampa) said, “I’m still opposed to the bill.” “It’s not my money, it’s the employees’ money and I believe they have a right to do with it as they want.” Sen. Greg Evers, (Crestview) who still remains opposed saying this is an issue that’s going to heat up before it goes away.

Now he’s enlisted the support of the Tea Party in Action, the political group he supported and worked closed with during his campaign to put pressure on Evers. Thrasher (group leader) concedes that the issue is important to SCOTT, who has been eager to court a national audience by moving the antiunion agenda in Florida; and, if it’s important to the governor, it’s important to the RPOF. The bill now moves to the Senate Rules Committee which Thrasher chairs. If we get it to the floor, they will have the votes to pass it!

Source: Excerpts from article written by Mary Ellen Klas

OPINION: Important to Scott!!!! What has that to do with UNIONS or POLICY? Clearly, Mr. Scott has a personal agenda and a political vendetta against the current President of the United States. He is using the office of Governor to incite, ridicule and offend the Presidency. He has touted that the rail service is Obamarail and the health care proposal is Obamacare.

BUT where are the jobs as unemployment stands at 10.4%? Mr. Scott has no interest in turning Florida's economy around or job growth. It appears he is self-serving in trying to make a name for himself in his outlandish decisions. Moreover, his intentions steer more towards promoting his political career rather than promoting the state of Florida, as he was elected to do.

Today’s Highlights...
April 16, 2011
Orlando, FL — YSL is the kind of show that can make you laugh your head off or add more punctuations to the issues at large with eruptions of fiery debates. Clearly you never know what to expect once the doors open, just before the on-air light goes on, and the door behind you closes. But one thing is certain it is lively from start to finish. Immediately upon hearing the theme song at Noon you know you’re just moments away from being greeted by its host Jose Miranda, the voice that gets you up and moving in a minute.

As soon as the background music begins to fade Miranda opens with new dialogue and a continuation of more mayhem as he deals with real life often controversial issues. The kind of realism that’s bound up with today’s rising concerns. For some it is a much needed wake up call as too many of its citizens are asleep at the wheel; and, we all need to become cognizant of these issues in order to take the appropriate measures.

Miranda for weeks has addressed the growing concerns in politics especially with Republicans and their continued desire to breed more fear to the public. A “Party” that today many feel have lost their way because they maintain a pro-business platform combined with policies that favor the wealthy at the expense of the middle class to the escalating unregulated/unfettered capitalism, which many view as a purely ideological approach to the issues. Whenever you favor corporations over the people invariably you’re going to start losing popularity.

However, before Jose engages YSL’s guest, Deon Long, in a discussion about the Republican Party, he diverts our attention to another guest, Angela LaTorre. LaTorre who had recently published a book entitled, “Incredible Dating Adventures: NEXT!” has caused quite a sensation and Jose along with co-host Haydee Ayala take a look at why the stir.

Angela candidly admits that she always had a passion for writing but her desire to write this book was due essentially to a failing marriage. Having come from her parent’s home right in to a marriage to motherhood and suddenly after many years of devotion her marriage is over. Her book is a hands-on quest of her journey, a search to finding true and lasting love though she did admit she’s no authority but upon further inspection it appears that this writer’s journey to this place in her life has left her all the wiser, it is quite an impressive read. To reach out to Angela go to incredibledatingadventures.com or invite her to be a friend on Facebook. Of course, to hear the interview in its entirety please log on to our archives.

Next, Jose engages Deon Long in conversation. Long is considered one of the state’s most influential African-American leaders. His views are more conservative than most Republicans. Nonetheless, it didn't take long before the two became involved in one lively and fiery debate, especially after the name of Rick Scott — affectionately referred to by Jose as the “King” and currently the Governor of Florida — came into the discussion.

Long, who is no stranger to YSL having appeared on YSL's airwaves before, is quite familiar with Jose’s views on some of the Republicans’ short comings nationwide; and, the current shenanigans being offered by the Florida Republican Party. Well, let’s just say this is a debate the country should be having. Also, Deon is aware that Jose is not a fan of Scott. Unfortunately, time isn't always an ally of good conversation and the interview had to be cut short. For more details, go to the archived shows and listen to the interview.

Crop Tops are HOT for 2011
April 16, 2011
The crop tops were first introduced in 2009. Yet, they didn’t quite make a big splash back then. However, if you have a few locked away in your closet it’s time to bring them out. Because, crop tops are very much a high-spring/summer 2011 look. This top is one of the hottest trends of weather and party atmosphere. It is not just about exposing ones stomach; but, about all of the stylish ways of showing a little of your toned midriff. After all, we are a body conscious society.

Crop tops can go from sportswear as a daywear trend or even as a sophisticated more refined piece that embraces a look not to be feared but embraced showing confidence in ones own skin. These pieces go from off the shoulder to the merest slit along the waistline of a dress to a look that can be quite sophisticated, or can be sported as a daywear trend to one of the hottest looks for evening wear.

Now keep in mind this look is NOT for everyone for only a few can dare to expose that much skin. Ideally it is more suited for a slimmer body type. And, if you just happen to fall within that particular body frame the crop top is sure to be your favorite piece to wear outdoor or to any festivity. Ideally they should be worn with high waist trousers or knee length shorts or skirts.

So if you dare to go bare this spring/summer this look is for you!

Lemony Chickpea Salad
Serve this fresh-tasting chickpea salad with warm, soft pita bread to soak up the olive oil dressing.

Servings: 8 • Time: 2 Hrs 20 Min plus Overnight Soaking

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons pure olive oil
1 yellow onion, quartered
2 carrots, halved
1 celery rib, halved crosswise, plus 4 small celery ribs, finely diced
1 pound dried chickpeas, soaked overnight and drained
4 rosemary sprigs and 4 thyme sprigs, tied together with string
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1 medium red onion, finely chopped
½ cup red wine vinegar
Finely shredded zest and juice of 1 lemon
2 garlic cloves, very finely chopped
1 teaspoon finely chopped rosemary
½ teaspoon dried oregano
1 ½ teaspoons finely chopped peperoncini
1 cup extra-virgin olive oil
¾ cup finely chopped flat-leaf parsley

Directions:
In a large soup pot, heat the pure olive oil. Add the quartered yellow onions, carrots and halved celery rib and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are golden, about 10 minutes. Add the drained chickpeas, the herb sprig bundle and enough water to cover by 2 inches and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat and simmer over moderately low until the chickpeas are tender, about 1 ½ hours. Add a large pinch of salt and pepper and cook the chickpeas for 10 minutes longer. Remove from the heat and cool for 15 minutes, then drain the chickpeas. Discard the herb sprigs, onion, carrots and celery.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, soak the red onion in the vinegar for 15 minutes. Drain discarding the vinegar. Return the onion to the bowl and add the diced celery, lemon zest, lemon juice, garlic, chopped rosemary, oregano and peperoncini. Add the chickpeas and olive oil; season with salt and pepper. Fold in the parsley and serve.

MAKE AHEAD
The chickpea salad can be refrigerated overnight. Add the parsley just before serving.

Top Myths about Safe Sex and Sexual Health
Websites are often riddled with errors, omissions, and outdated advice, so it’s not always easy to find the truth about common myths believed by many teenagers and perhaps some adults. So we are going to cover an abridged copy of the top sexual health misconceptions. Always remember if in doubt, consult a physician.

1. Myth: Catching an STD from a toilet seat. Sexually transmitted diseases or infections can not live outside the body for a long period of time, especially not on a cold, hard surface like a toilet seat. So the chances of you catching one from whoever used the bathroom before you are slim to none.
2. Myth: You can’t get pregnant the first time you have sex. You are just as likely to get pregnant the first time as any other. In fact, 20% of people get pregnant within a month of starting sex.
3. Myth: Women need a Pap smear when they turn 18. Previously it was recommended after a woman first has sexual intercourse. However, now pap tests aren’t recommended until women have been sexually active for three years, or until they turn 21. The reason for the change is because in most cases the human papillomavirus (HPV) clear up on their own within three years. It’s only the cases that stick around longer and will be picked up by a later pap test that are real causes for concern because they can lead to cervical cancer
4. Myth: The “morning after” pill causes an abortion. Plan B as it is know is not the same as RU-486 a pill that causes an abortion. In fact, if you take Plan B when you’re already pregnant—that is, if a fertilized egg has attached to the wall of your uterus—it won’t make a bit of difference. Plan B is NOT an abortion agent and is available to women ages 17 and up without a prescription. You just need to ask the pharmacist.
5. Myth: Birth control pills make you gain weight. A review article published in 2006 analyzed 44 previous trials and found that while some participants did gain weight during their studies, there was no evidence that their birth control was to blame. Since this can not be supported by science, perhaps one has to weigh what important is it better to gain the weight which can be controlled with diet and exercise or have an unexpected pregnancy.
6. Myth: IUD birth control is not safe for use in adolescents. Initially it was thought that these small objects inserted through the cervix and placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy and last up to 12 years may increase pelvic inflammatory disease in women under 18. However as of 2007, ACOG has said that IUDs are a safe and highly effective birth-control method in most adults as well as adolescents—a population at particular risk for unintended pregnancy.
7. Myth: If you get the HPV shot you’re safe from cervical cancer. Gardasil and Cervarix are cervical cancer vaccines that block the two types of HPV that most frequently cause cervical cancer. Also Gardasil protects against two types that cause the majority of genital warts. But, about 30% of cervical cancers will NOT be prevented by these vaccines. Therefore, your best defense is a pap test.
8. Myth: Douching is a healthy way to clean the vagina. The vagina is self-cleansing, and douching actually causes more harm than good according to the National Women’s Health Information Center. The natural bacteria found in the vagina help keep it clean and healthy, and douching can disturb that balance and spread vaginal infections into the fallopian tubes, uterus and ovaries. Additionally, it does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy. Regular washing with warm water and mild unscented soaps will help keep the outside of the vagina clean. AND, try to avoid scented tampons, pads, powders, and sprays which can increase the chance of infections.

A Poise President Announces Plan to Tackle Deficit
WASHINGTON DC (NPR) — Wednesday President Barack Obama under the increasing pressure to address the nation’s burgeoning debit, summarized a sweeping vision to cut government spending deficits by more than $4 trillion over a 12-year period through tax increases and spending cuts, phasing it in over time.

President Obama used very precise language in his speech. His words were clear-cut in denouncing the GOP’s plans for cutting spending and doing away with Medicare and Medicaid as it is today. In addition, he said that the Republicans have concluded that “we can’t afford to care for seniors and poor children; but, somehow we can afford more than $1 trillion in new tax breaks for the wealthy.”

In his delivery, the president portrayed himself as a fair and prudent leader willing to trim every area of government, which included all popular agencies and the military, as well as raising taxes only on wealthy people who have benefited greatly in recent years. This was a broad appeal to attract the independent voters who swung dramatically from Democratic candidates in 2008 to Republicans in 2010 and now would hold the key to his re-election hopes next year.

More and more Americans continue to show an increased alarm at the fast-growing federal debt. Their concerns along with conflicting emotions and beliefs are escalating on the handling of our nation's biggest social programs — Medicare and Social Security. Both parties know they face either political opportunities or risks as they tackle head on these issues. So each party is looking for phrases and slogans to best exploit their openings while minimizing their weaknesses.

This week the House Republicans revealed that they would be passing an ambitious 10-year plan that would change Medicare into a voucher program and roll Medicaid into a state block grant program, purportedly saving the government billions of dollars. Also, this bill would reduce tax rates for corporations and high earners, while ending some tax-evasion loopholes.

The Democrats feel the GOP is going too far in its proposed changes to Medicare and the expanding federal health care program for older Americans and the disabled. They believe voters will flinch at the notion of higher medical costs for the elderly, when income tax rates are plummeting for high earners. Obama ripped the Republican plan saying, "It's a vision that says America can't afford to keep the promise we've made to care for our seniors," he said. "It ends Medicare as we know it."

Meanwhile, Republicans have fine tuned their attacks on those Democrats who would suggest a tax increase of any kind. In addition, they criticize Obama's long and multilayered speech on that topic alone. Especially Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a likely presidential candidate, said Obama "doesn't get it." "The fear of higher taxes tomorrow hurts job creation today." Followed by another R-Senator, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee who said, "The real problem is that Washington spends too much, not that it taxes too little."

However, numerous bipartisan and nonpartisan analysts say it is almost impossible to solve the nation's debt problem without some combination of tax increases, spending cuts and substantial changes to Medicare and Social Security. After calling for an array of spending cuts Wednesday, Obama made the case for targeted tax increases, albeit in roundabout language.

Because Medicare and Social Security are popular with both parties, nobody wants to pay higher taxes however politicians are eager to feed the impression that solving the problem is just a matter of eliminating the waste and abuse and that tackling the deficit issue won't require tough choices." Yet, one things was certain the president would not repeat last year’s decision to extend Bush-era tax cuts, which is scheduled to expire before 2013 for families earning more than $250,000 a year. “We cannot afford $1 trillion worth of tax cuts for every millionaire and billionaire,” the president went on to say.

He renewed his call for limiting itemized deductions "for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans." Such deductions apply to money spent on mortgage interest payments, charitable gifts and other items. Obama described such goals as "reducing tax expenditures."

"I think it was very, very smart" to use such unfamiliar and indirect language, said Matt Bennett, vice president of Third Way, a Democratic-leaning think tank that praised Obama's speech. "Why not put it in those terms?" he said in an interview. "It's what the Republicans' Frank Luntz would do." Luntz is a GOP adviser known for pushing carefully crafted political terms, such as referring to levies on estates as the "death tax."

Bennett said Republicans have demonized even reasonable and necessary tax increases to the point that "it's a gigantic problem" for solving the nation's fiscal woes. If a "term of art" will blunt GOP attacks, he said, it could help Obama advance his agenda and give political cover to Republican lawmakers who believe some element of tax increases must be part of a deficit-reduction drive.

In his closest brush with an explicit call for tax increases Wednesday, Obama chastised the most insistent Republicans.

"Some will argue we shouldn't even consider ever, ever raising taxes, even if only on the wealthiest Americans," the president said. "It's just an article of faith for them. I say that at a time when the tax burden on the wealthy is at its lowest level in half a century, the most fortunate among us can afford to pay a little more."

This has definitely unleashed a barrage of GOP criticisms which will certainly echo through the fall of 2012.

This film is very much like the trailer. The storyline is about a man (Jack Gyllenhaal) fighting against time to retrieve a bomb before it explodes. And as he searches for clues among the train’s passengers, he discovers his love interest, Michelle Monaghan, on board among the commuters.

You may see some DNA threads to “Quantum Leap” for those of you who remember the series and the movie “Moon” but, let me assure you it’s in a class by itself.

There are moments that were a bit confusing. However, despite its flaws this is one fast-paced thriller that's sure to give you a 90-minute express ride while sitting in your seat. The movie is brilliant! Totally gripping and unexpectedly moving. Genuinely a must see!

WASHINGTON, DC (CNN, NBC, ABC) — The President made a rare appearance Tuesday to push Congress Members to compromise on a plan. Stating, “At a time when the economy is just beginning to grow or we’re just starting to see a pickup in employment, the last thing we need is a disruption that’s caused by a government shutdown, not to mention all the people who depend on government services.” He continued by saying, “It would be inexcusable for us to not be able to take care of last year’s business simply because of politics.”

The president also said, “What we can’t do is have a ‘my way or the highway approach’ to this problem.” “Nobody gets a 100 percent of what they want. And we have more than met the Republicans halfway at this point.”

Boehner, R-Ohio, on the other hand said in a statement Monday, “If the government shuts down, it will be because Senate Democrats failed to do their job.”

What happened to PBS lineup in Channel 24 Sale?
Orlando Sentinel — The public broadcaster announced Friday, April 1st that it was selling the TV station to focus on radio, which is currently pending approval by the Federal Communications Commission. At the moment PBS is working with other Florida stations to ensure the people of Orlando continue to receive their PBS show according to spokesperson Anne Bentley. WMFE will offer the PBS lineup for 60-90 days.

Jose Fajardo, WMFE President/CEO will continue to stay on until he is told otherwise. The buyer is listed as Community Educators of Orlando Inc. and signing the agreement was Marcus Lamb, founder of religious broadcaster Daystar Television Network. The purchase price is said to be in the amount of $3.5 million including a lease arrangement. $3 million is the actually sale price the remaining monies to be used for 90.7 a robust radio station.

For any one requesting a refund from the spring 2011 should mail their request to WMFE, 11510 E Colonial Drive, Orlando FL 32817 or call during normal business hours 9-5 M-F at 407-273-2300, ext 175.

Republican Senator To Take Away Salaries of School Board Members
Orlando Sentinel — Sen. Steve Wise, R-Jacksonville, chairman of the education committee is proposing a bill that is expected to kill Florida school board salaries doing away with all compensation but a stipend that could be no more than $100 per meeting.

[...]Cadle said Lawmakers might earn less but they also get paid staff and a per diem for each day in Tallahassee.

The Senate education panel is to take up the Bill, SPB 7234, at its 1:15 p.m. meeting Tuesday.

Gov. Scott (R – FL) — Has the "King" run a muck!
Wall Street Journal — The 2012 spending plan reflects cuts of $4.6 billion over the fiscal 2011 budget and Mr. Scott outlined more cuts for fiscal 2013. Ahead of Monday’s announcement, the Republican governor discussed slashing $5 billion from the budget, while cutting property and corporate income taxes by about $2 billion. In addition,

[...]Scott said the Agency for Persons with Disabilities’ ongoing budget deficit currently at $170 million had reached a critical point and needed to be address immediately.

Interesting! So his solution was to slash property and corporate taxes by $2 billion.

Hmm! Makes you wonder what programs or services WOULD have been saved had Gov. Scott not given the wealthy and corporations that $2 billion in tax shelters. Furthermore, as thousands of Floridians remain unemployed, where are the jobs after these shelters? Aren’t you glad you voted for him!

Today’s Highlights...
April 9, 2011
Orlando, FL — Today’s show was brimming with lively heated discussions! From start to finish, radio host Jose Miranda was on fire as he began the program with several hot button issues and searing rhetoric by the Republican Party. Stating we have accumulated the largest debt in the history of mankind, and this tug-of-war between the parties are out of control. When we go after women’s right, immigration, health, education and cloud issues with the Republican mantra then we are seriously in trouble. Any ambivalence felt by Miranda is over the direction of our nation. It wasn't long into his dialogue when he came under attack from a caller; and, as you well know arguments can flare when small disagreements are sparked, especially when the heated back-and-forth debate was not thoroughly explored by the caller.

In this case, it was over the controversial issue of Planned Parenthood specifically abortions. It appears that the public's perception conflicts on the amount of government spending in this precise area. However, Miranda made clear that disbursement for abortions are less than 3% and, upon further inspection, has been on a decline since it’s legalization in 1973. There is more to Planned Parenthood than just abortions. Nonetheless Jose reminded everyone not to take his word for it but to do the research, examine the data then decide.

Yo Soy Latino is a program that prides itself in bringing you the best of the best, which includes airing details that are accurately researched then communicated. We want to stir and encourage our listeners to call-in. So if you feel the abortion information was incorrectly stated, please let us know. We will be happy to revisit this issue with you.

Shifting gears a bit, Jose gave Haydee a call as she couldn't be in the studio for the airing of the show. She quickly joins in with some lighthearted banter before providing him with this week’s movie pick, Source Code. Then of course Jose puts Haydee on the hot seat asking her what she thought about the bill to cut abortion. It was her firm belief that no one should predicate what a woman should or should not do with her body regardless. That should remain a personal choice.

The hour came upon us too quickly and the one thing that can be said about the YSL show is that there is never a dull moment, especially when Jose Miranda is at the helm. Come back next week and join this dynamic dual for more 'hot mess' mayhem. If you would like to hear more on today’s broadcast, go to last week’s archived show.

Spring/Summer 2011
April 9, 2011
Stripes are big this season. That’s correct! The nautical look will be a dominant part of the Spring/Summer season, which is going to add a very crisp and fresh look to any gal’s wardrobe. Remember anyone can have a seaworthy look even if you never leave port.

Look for simple pieces in the red, white and blue family. You can still keep within the usual traditional feel simply by adding your own balance and style to the look. More importantly, don’t be reluctant to experiment. Pair a white jean skirt with a boat-neck T-shirt in navy or red then add a thick white or navy belt and finish the look with some Keds. You’ll have any captain on the dock saying, “Welcome aboard Matty!”

If a jean skirt makes you uneasy then consider a wide-leg dark navy jean as your staple outfit. Layer it with a white v-neck sweater over a navy blouse. Accent the look with some jewelry like a necklace made of red beads and you will have given that style just the right pop. Also, if the weather is too warm for a sweater, pull out a well-tailored navy blazer, add a white blouse with your jeans and you have an outfit that can be worn from day to night.

Whether you’re chilling by the shore or on a yacht or just staying close to home any plain outfit can have a nautical feel simply by putting on an accent piece, like some gold anchor earring or an anchor necklace. It’s a quick and inexpensive way to achieving this look.

Who knew this look would be so engaging!

Grilled Skirt Steak with Fregola-Orange Salad
A Michael Schwartz’s favorite alternative to the classic steak and potatoes. His Mediterranean-inspired skirt-steak salad is a wonderful mix of just-seared slices of beef, cool and crisp fennel, chewy fregola (the Sardinian dot-shaped pasta) and juicy oranges, finished with a drizzle of briny black olive tapenade. When pairing with a smooth wine consider the spicy tannins and dark fruit of Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley.

Serving: 6 • Time: 45 min

Ingredients:
¼ cup fregola
1 pound skirt steak, cut crosswise into 6-inch pieces
1 tablespoon pure chile powder, such as ancho
Salt and freshly ground pepper
½ small red onion, sliced into ¼-inch slabs
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 fennel bulb—halved, cored and thinly sliced crosswise
2 medium navel oranges—peeled, quartered lengthwise and thinly sliced crosswise
5 ounces baby arugula
4 large radishes, thinly sliced
¼ cup black olive tapenade

Directions:
Light a grill or preheat the broiler. In a saucepan of boiling salted water, cook the fregola until al dente, about 20 minutes. Drain and cool under running water; shake off the excess water.

Meanwhile, rub the steaks with the chile powder and season with salt and pepper. Grill the steaks and the onion slabs over high heat for about 8 minutes, turning occasionally, for medium-rare meat and tender onions. Let the skirt steaks rest for about 10 minutes. Let the onions cool slightly then coarsely chop them.

In a large bowl, whisk the lemon juice into the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Add the fennel, oranges, arugula, radishes, fregola and grilled onion and toss well. Thinly slice the skirt steaks across the grain and arrange on plates. Spoon the tapenade over the stetaks, mound the salad alongside and serve.

Bad Habits for your Heart
Everyone wants to have a healthy heart. Still, cardiovascular disease affects more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States. The good news is that changing some simple everyday habits can make a big difference in your ability to live a healthy lifestyle.

As the list is large we are only going to cover two of the worst habits for your heart and how to avoid them. If you are interested in reading more, you can go to health.com. The footnote below will give you the specific details.

1. Watching TV
Sitting for hours on end increases your risk of heart attack and stroke, even if you exercise regularly.

“Intermittent exercise doesn’t compensate for the time you sit,” says Harmony R. Reynolds, MD, associate director of the Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center at NYU Langone Medical Center, in New York City.

Why? The lack of movement may affect blood levels of fats and sugars.
Dr. Reynolds advises walking around periodically and, if you’re at work, standing up to talk on the phone.

2. Leaving hostility and depression unchecked
Are you feeling stressed, hostile, or depressed? Remember this too can take its toll on your heart.

While everyone feels this way at some point of the time, how you handle these emotions can affect your heart health. “Those likely to internalize stress are in greater danger; research has shown a benefit to laughter and social support,” Dr. Reynolds says. “And, it’s helpful to be able to go to someone and talk about your problems.”

A Look into our Government — Compromise or Shutdown
With no resolve in sight is a Shutdown inevitable? Also, is this really about fiscal responsibility or more of what we saw in the 1995-96 when Republicans pushed too far? What is this dollar figure the Republicans hold steadfast too and are not willing to disclose? What are the issues that remain unresolved if it’s not on “women’s health”, then what? More importantly, if a compromise is reached at what cost, what are we actually giving up? AND, do we fully understand what the signing of this bill actually means?

McKeon, House R-Santa Clarita claims that at least 99% of Republicans do not want to shut down yet when asked if he would consider giving up his pay during a government shutdown he reported stated, “Why should I?” Makes you wonder if they are out for themselves or the people who elected them.

However, if the shut down does goes through, about 800,000 federal employees would be furloughed many of which reside in the DC area, which means no pay until furlough is lifted.

All National Parks will be closed and Florida having two unique national parks in the southernmost points, THE EVERGLADES and DRY TORTUGAS how will we be affected? Tourism brings a large amount of revenue to the state; and, if these national parks are closed, where’s the revenue?

Park Economics:
Everglades National Park reported in 2005 a budget of over $28 million. Of that, $14.8 million is granted from the National Park Service, and $13.5 million from various sources including CERP, donations, and other grants. The entry fee for vehicles in 2006 ranged from $10 to $200 for bus tours. Of the nearly one million visitors to Everglades National Park in 2006, more than 38,000 were overnight campers, paying $16 a night or $10 a night for backcountry permits. Visitors spent $2.6 million within the park (from rafting to kayaking) and $48 million in local economies. More than 900 jobs were sustained or created within or by the park, and the park added value of $35 million to local economies.

As we all know history has a way of repeating itself and the longest government shutdown was during the Clinton administration in 1995 and 1996 when it lasted 21 days and paralyzed important government functions. Additionally, it cost the country more monies then the plan suggested. More importantly, it helped Clinton win re-election in 1996, making it one of Clinton’s greatest political triumphs.

UPDATE: The US GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN has been averted! Tune in to YSL next week as we explore what this actually means to you.

Movie Review:
HOP — Rating: 4.5 STARS
This movie was a lot of fun to see. Anyone 5 and up will enjoy the character of E.B. and the rest of the cast members. However, for teachers who are considering a field trip this movie should at the top of their list because it delivers a positive message about reaching your dreams and pursuing them.

Some of the characters do occasionally use words like "idiot," "stupid," and "freak;" also, there is some slapstick violence and perhaps one brief scene in which it appears like the Easter Bunny might be in trouble, but it's okay. As even the kids will be able to tell that everything will be just fine.

However, there is one scene in particular which I found quite amusing. E.B. tries to get into the Playboy mansion because he thinks it's a haven for bunny rabbits. Of course, only the adults in the audience will more than likely get the humor in this; and, for those of you who were wondering — nothing risquĂ© is shown.

HOP is truly delightful and entertaining. And, for those of you who might be concerned about its contents, there is no reference to the holiday's religious meaning.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
April 2, 2011
Orlando, FL — YSL is an ever evolving program constantly challenging its host's Jose Miranda and Haydee Ayala as well as its listeners. This week wasn't any different! Our schedule guest regrettably could not make it. However, as always, YSL still had plenty on its plate. We discussed the hot movies out there for one to enjoy to this week’s movie review, and we spoke of the changing world we live in.

Of course YSL did reach out to Alan of Ol’ Times Smoke Shop, one of Jose's pass time pleasures. Even though time seemed to pass rather quickly we managed to focus on the 2012 potential presidential hopefuls from Michele Bachmann (R) to Sarah Palin (R) among a few others.

While there are many Republicans already looking to align themselves as candidates in the 2012 race, most are very, very similar in their line of attack. We need a leader who is not only a politician but has fresh ideas and can deal with other world leaders. Someone who has the ability of thinking outside the box and has done so but more importantly isn’t afraid to make a stand even if he stands alone.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints Miranda finished by reminding us to consider each candidate’s platform carefully. Take time to review their backgrounds look into their track records but do so without being swayed by commercials or speeches. However, in an effort to even the platform a little YSL has added another section to this week’s show, which was not covered in the program. Take a moment to read it. It is under the heading of Politics! and of course listen to the complete show in the archives

Fashion...
Key Looks in Men’s Suits for Spring 2011
April 2, 2011
Men’s suits never actually go out of style but they do improve over time. The same can not be said of most fashion trends. So what are the styles for 2011 spring/summer and more important will they be in fashion in 2012?

The two qualities that any modern suit should aim to have are classicism and masculinity. For example, in the classic part a good suit should have the best elements from peak eras of men’s suiting. The savvy confident look of the 30s and the skinny detailing cuts of the 60s — both looks should be applied to a modern silhouette. As for the masculinity of a suit that unfortunately is less easy to define because it’s all about the cut. The cut will either compliment the male physique, giving the wearer broader shoulders and a slim down waistline highlighting (or implying) an exercised body. In short, what you think as you have on that suit is going to be a key factor. The wearer should always feel like he cleans up well.

There are two cuts in a single breasted suit; and, both are dominant types — the first is a sleek cut which is a single breasted suit and the wearer prefers something of a toned down effect, never casual, but dresses up with restraint. The second is the confidence cut which may be slightly similar to the sleek cut. However, it features one key attribute that’s not consistent with the sleek cut. Instead of a slim to medium lapel this cut is all about peaked lapels and making it more than just a single breasted suit cut.

Next is the double breasted suits and sports coats which are back and I’m not speaking the boxy cut of yesterday. They are now designed to accent and to heighten the perfect masculine shape, I’m talking about the V-shaped, well-worked body. And, if you happened to possess a double breasted suit in your closet take it to your tailor to refresh and bring new life to it. You won’t be disappointed!

Mmmm Recipe...
Crunchy Asian Pea Salad with Honeyed Bacon
This salad typically includes crispy slices of Chinese sausage. However, an easy way to replace the sausage, which isn’t readily available, is to add thick slices of bacon brushed with a honey-soy mix and then baked in the oven until crunchy. Store-bought chile oil replaces homemade.

Serving: 4 Total Time: 30 min

Ingredients:
6 thick slices of maple-cured bacon (about 6 ounces)
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon soy sauce
½ teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
3 tablespoons pure olive oil
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
½ teaspoon finely grated lime zest
1 tablespoon Asian fish sauce
1 tablespoon chile oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper
½ pound snow peas, julienned
6 ounces snow pea shoots (8 cups)
2 tablespoons torn basil leaves
2 tablespoons torn mint leaves

Directions:
Preheat the broiler and position a rack 8 inches from the heat. Arrange the bacon slices on a baking sheet in a single layer. In a small bowl, stir together the honey, soy sauce and five-spice powder and brush liberally over the bacon. Broil for 10 minutes, turning once, until the bacon slices are browned and crisp. Transfer the bacon to a work surface and cut into 1/2-inch pieces. Let the bacon cool.
In a large bowl, whisk the olive oil with the lime juice, lime zest, fish sauce and chile oil and season with salt and pepper. Add the snow peas, pea shoots, basil, mint and bacon and toss. Serve right away.

Allergic reactions, chemicals in foods, insect stings, sunlight exposure, or medicines can all cause histamine release. Sometimes it's impossible to find out exactly why hives have formed.

There are several different types of hives and angioedema, including:
Acute urticaria and/or angiodema: Hives or swelling lasting less than six weeks. The most common causes are foods, medicines, latex, or infections. Insect bites and internal disease may also be responsible. The most common foods that cause hives are nuts, chocolate, fish, tomatoes, eggs, fresh berries, soy, wheat, and milk. Fresh foods cause hives more often than cooked foods. Certain food additives and preservatives may also be to blame. Medicines that can cause hives and angioedema include aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen), high blood pressure medications (ACE inhibitors), or painkillers such as codeine.

Chronic urticaria and/or angioedema: Hives or swelling lasting more than six weeks. The cause of this type of hives is usually more difficult to identify than those causing acute urticaria and/or angioedema. The causes can be similar to those of acute urticaria but can also include autoimmunity, chronic infections, hormonal disorders, and malignancy.

Physical urticaria: Hives caused by direct physical stimulation of the skin — for example, cold, heat, sun exposure, vibration, pressure, sweating, and exercise. The hives usually occur right where the skin was stimulated and rarely appear anywhere else. Most of the hives appear within one hour after exposure.

Dermatographism: Hives that form after firmly stroking or scratching the skin. These hives can also occur along with other forms of urticaria.

Hereditary angioedema: This is painful swelling of tissue. It is passed on through families.

The Race for 2012 is on!
April 2, 2011
Since 2012 is rapidly upon us, it is up to us to be prepared so that we can make the best choice possible. Keep in mind there is going to be much said by way of ads, blogs, and media coverage. Therefore, YSL decided to take a fair look at the ups and downs of the U.S. business cycle (beyond the direct control of policymakers) during the last 40 years from 1961 through 2000.

Beginning 1961-1968, 1977-1980, 1993-2000, the United States had a Democrat as president which was only half of the time (1961-1968, 1977-80 and 1993-2000). Then there was a Republican president for the other twenty years (1969-1976 and 1981-1992).

Let’s look at the strength on both sides then review the last twenty years when either party held office. It would stand to reason that similar results within the two groups would have taken place. However, not so, there was a significant gain when a Democrat occupied the White House in each of the five categories below.

% Per Annum Democratic Republican Bush43
GDP Growth....4.1%............2.9%..........2.2%
Employment....2.9%............1.7%..........0.5%
CPI.................4.0%.............5.1%.........3.0%
DJIA...............8.1%..............6.5%.......0.9%
Dollar...........+0.8%..............-3.6%......-5.9%

In closing YSL came across a statement from “The Notes” as reported by Michael Falcone for ABC News which we would like to share with you.

The Republican National Committee also chimed by unveiling a new website and ad using the theme, “Hope Isn’t Hiring,” pinning the nation's nearly 9 percent unemployment rate, a growing national debt and rising gas prices on Obama.

These problems were not a result of a 4-year term but one that was in fact generated by the predecessors of this esteem office.

Movie Review:
Red Riding Hood – 2.5 Rating
Amanda Seyfried as the heroine and title character of this movie was a bit disappointing. However, none of the actors had strong characters. It was as if though something was missing hampering the cast members to develop their roles and the story dragged, which says much for the writing.

It's not really a carbon copy of the Twilight movies outside of vampirism and a few things here and there. It's a mystery love story involving a girl in a triangle with two boys though her heart is taken by one. Even with that understanding the movie is weak. The trailer was much better. However, the settings are beautiful to look at.

If you’re into vampires and enjoy a mystery that involves a love story about a girl with two boys, mix in some passion then add some blood and perhaps you might be able to sit through it. If not, you may be the one yawning and disturbing your neighbor. This movie may not appeal to the masses. However, I don’t believe it will do too badly at the box office, simply because it leans more toward a younger audience, teens.

Accessories

As you know accessories can either make or break an outfit. They can turn a drab suit into some thing desirable or they can turn a plain T-shirt and dowdy jeans into the hottest outfit at any party/soirée.

Begin with shoes to make a fantastic impact. Heels can do wonders for any outfit especially if you want to add height but if you want a bit more stability in your walk and you’re not too at ease with heels attempt wedges. They will definitely give you the support and comfort you need. However, if you want to make your ankles look lean then stay away of ankle straps on shoes because they will cut you off in the wrong place making your ankles look chunky.

This doesn’t mean you ought to give up and throw on a pair of boots. It just means that if you ankles are lean enough then it will be alright. Be careful though with boots especially if you are concerned about your calves. Wear tall boots that end just below the bend of the knee. By no means wear boots that cut you off mid-calf.
Remember a great pair of shoes isn’t the only way to kick an outfit into high gear.
Consider other accessories, such as handbags that coordinate with your height and size. If you’re petite using an oversized bag like a clutch may be a bit overwhelming for your small frame so go for the trendy day clutch.

Mmmm Recipe...
Molten Chocolate Cakes
by Jean-Georges Vongerichten
This supremely rich and chocolaty original is in a class by itself!

Pairing Suggestion
Chocolate is too intense and bitter for many sweet wines, but not port. Try this dessert with a Ruby Porto.

INGREDIENTS
1 stick (4 ounces) of unsalted butter
6 ounces bittersweet chocolate, preferably Valrhona
2 eggs
2 egg yolks
1/4 cup sugar
Pinch of salt
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

DIRECTIONS
• Preheat the oven to 450°. Butter and lightly flour four 6-ounce ramekins. Tap out the excess flour. Set the ramekins on a baking sheet.
• In a double boiler, over simmering water, melt the butter with the chocolate. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs with the egg yolks, sugar and salt at high speed until thickened and pale.
• Whisk the chocolate until smooth. Quickly fold it into the egg mixture along with the flour. Spoon the batter into the prepared ramekins and bake for 12 minutes, or until the sides of the cakes are firm but the centers are soft. Let the cakes cool in the ramekins for 1 minute, then cover each with an inverted dessert plate. Carefully turn each one over, let stand for 10 seconds and then unmold. Serve immediately.

MAKE AHEAD
The batter can be refrigerated for several hours; bring to room temperature before baking.

Health....
NEW Health Benefits of Eating Chocolate

Chocolate has all but been elevated to super food status. And the good news keeps rolling in.
So here are three more reasons why you may not want to be too quick to break that chocolate habit, as long as you're hitting the dark stuff.
• Chocolate makes you smarter. Ample research suggests that the flavonols in dark chocolate increase cerebral blood flow, which in turn may trigger the creation of new blood vessels and brain cells. And a new study showed that older adults performed better on cognitive tests after eating small portions of the sweet stuff. Talk about a nourished noggin!
• Chocolate weakens heart attacks. Although more research is needed to confirm this one, a new study showed that regular chocolate eaters who had heart disease were less likely to die following a heart attack compared with the people who didn't treat themselves to the dark and dreamy stuff. Chocolate has a cavity-fighting compound. Okay, so you don't necessarily want to trade in your toothbrush for a chocolate bar. But some interesting new research shows a compound in chocolate -- theobromine -- may be just as good as fluoride at hardening tooth enamel. So the compound could find its way into toothpastes and mouthwashes one day. Until then, keep in mind that most commercially prepared chocolate has lots of sugar in it.
• Don't Go Overboard
Despite chocolate's benefits, you don't want to o.d. on it lest you do your waist and blood sugar more harm than good.
