Review Summary
4 stars
The reviews are mixed for this particular movie. However, I found Julia Roberts’ portrayal of Liz Gilbert to be absolutely delightful. The film depicts Gilbert’s life as a modern successful woman who has everything – a husband, a house, a promising career – and yet she’s terribly unhappy, which is a side affect of most women who discover their husbands are having an affair. Of course, there’s a divorce and as a newly divorcee, she finds herself lost, confused, and searching mainly for what she truly wants in life.

Finding herself at a crossroad she decides to steps out of her comfort zone, risking everything to change her life around. Robert embarks on a year-long journey around the world and as she does she begins to discover the most minuscule things...the true pleasure of eating during her stay in Italy; the power of prayer in India, and, finally and unexpectedly, the inner peace and balance of true love in Bali. The locales Indonesia, Italy and India (the three I’s) are spectacular totally breathtaking!

If you are like most that have not read the book but have a personal like for Roberts then this movie is worth seeing.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
Interview with
Matt Faulkner, Orange County candidate in Mayor Race and
Sam Lopez, Chairman of the Florida Puerto Rican Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

By Anthony Gaenzle
Orlando, FL. — Jose and Haydee hosted a lively edition of Yo Soy Latino on Saturday, discussing politics, sports, handling calls from familiar listeners and speaking with in-studio guests. The show also ventured into a new era as Jose informed listener that they will now be able to view the show on the popular website Ustream by checking out Yo Soy Latino with Jose Miranda and Haydee Ayala.

Via cell phone, mayoral hopeful Matt Faulkner spoke with Miranda. Faulkner was excited about his position in the race, considering the experience of his opponents.
Voicing his slogan, “tax payers first”, Faulkner explained that he wanted to put the people first over special interest, which has been a theme in the political world as election time approaches.

Battling traffic issues, Samuel Lopez arrived at the studio just in time to speak with Jose as Yo Soy Latino reached closing time for the weekend. Lopez is the chairman of the Florida Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce.

Pressed for time, Lopez voiced his concern that the Hispanic community of Florida needs to “step up to the plate and kick down that door” and become a part of the political process. He stressed that the communities leaders needed to become a stronger part of the decision making.

For more information on Lopez, listeners can call (321)-863-5165, email him at slopez@samuellopez.com, or visit the website at www.puertoricanchamber.com.

As always, be sure to check out the entire show by visiting the archives section of www.yosoylatino.us. Remember to listen to the show each Saturday from noon until 1 pm and now you can check out the show on Ustream as well.

Fashion...
Hairstyles – Take a trip down to Memory Lane!
August 21, 2010
As a supplement to last week’s editorial “A Return to the 50s!” I thought I would revisit a few of the hairstyles we can look forward to for 2010.

In the 40s, the retro look was quite popular; you could see it everywhere — in the shops, in the runways even as you walked down the streets of any city. This style had a lot of sophistication, and even today designers are incorporating hair a bit more to their fashions giving it that elegant twist combining it with rolls and braids galore.

These hairstyles do take a great deal of work and of course will require some hair products, but if you normally spend time fixing your hair in the morning, which we all do, this should not be a problem.

As always there is something for everyone, if you have long hair reinvent the ponytail by turning the ponytail upside down and inside up — the result is a twisted roll effect on either side of the ponytail. Short, curly or straight hair can be rolled, hair that is overlapping upon itself, having a beautiful, full shape without the directional influences that a twisted roll has.

The sidebar and the layers are becoming increasingly popular. However, this year it is the short cuts that are making a comeback; as well as colors like red, copper and more shades of pink to red. The 2010 hairstyles will be more eye popping and dazzling with bright red tones.

And, of course, don’t forget hair accessories which can add a special touch to your style. Choosing something shiny or plastic can update your look with little effort.

The Sports Section
In this week’s “Sport’s Section” we follow up on the notable NFL storylines that our intern Anthony brought to us 3 weeks ago.

One storyline of note came to us from Minnesota. Mr. Brett Favre’s annual flirtation with retirement came to an abrupt end, as three fellow players from the Minnesota Vikings made the trip to Mississippi, where Favre lives, to talk the quarterback into returning. Favre claims THIS year will be the final one, but we won't be holding our breath.

Speaking of holding our breath, Washington Redskins fans are holding their collective breath, waiting to see if Lineman Albert Haynesworth will actually be physically able to play this season. Considered by some to be lazy, Haynesworth passed his conditioning test after numerous attempts, only to miss yet another practice because he felt ill on the field. Washington fans don't get your hopes up.

About 900 miles west of Washington, the Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco show has not panned out for the Cincinnati Bengals so far. Aside from a 60 plus yard catch by Owens in the Bengals pre-season game against the Eagles, the dynamic duo has been largely disappointing. Fortunately the Bengals defense looks really solid.

That’s it for the Sports Section for now, but we will be back with another installment next week.

Mmmm Recipe...
Braised Beef Short Ribs with Cheddar Polenta
Beef short ribs are a great go-to dish for entertaining -they are flavorful, make a beautiful presentation, and require minimal effort after the initial prep. Slow braising tenderizes the meat so it practically falls off the bone, and the flavors of the cooking liquid reduce and intensify over a low boil.

This Braised Beef Short Ribs Recipe is a homerun for wine pairing - red wine is one of the braising liquids so the flavors marry beautifully. With the richness of the ribs, we like an equally rich red wine. Our splurge is a sumptuously wonderful Margaux from the terrific 2005 vintage. Our steal is a Malbec - one of the lesser-known Bordeaux varieties - from Argentina.

WINE Suggestion:
2005 Chateau Dauzac, Margaux
Incredibly delicious and rich now with intense fruit flavors, this also has lots of aging potential. ($55)

"Steal"
2008 Bodega Norton Malbec, Mendoza
One of the five Bordeaux red grapes, Malbec is the wine star of Argentina -- spicy, yet smooth. ($10)

Yields: 4 servings • Total Cook Time: 2 hours

Ingredients:
1.5 lb beef short ribs
6 cups low-sodium beef stock
1 28 oz. can of diced tomatoes with juice
2 carrots
4 celery stalks
1 lg yellow onion
1 cup fine yellow cornmeal
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar
1/4 cup of Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup red wine
1/3 cup olive oil
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp dried basil
1 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp nutmeg

Directions:
1.) Dice carrots, celery and onion. Generously season rips with salt and fresh ground black pepper.

2.) Heat olive oil in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Add ribs and brown on all sides, about 1 minute per side. Add carrots, celery and onion and cook for about 3 minutes.

3.) Add wine and let cook off for roughly 3-4 minutes, then add 4 cups of stock, tomatoes (including juice), sugar, Worcestershire sauce and thyme, basil and oregano.

4.) Reduce heat so liquid stays at a low boil and cook covered for 2 hours.

5.) In a separate sauce pan, heat remaining 2 cups of stock over medium-high heat.

6.) When at a boil, add cornmeal and turn off heat. Let sit for 5 minutes, then stir in parmesan, nutmeg and add salt and pepper to taste.

7.) To plate, spoon a serving of polenta onto plate and smooth out. Layer 2 short ribs on top of polenta and ladle with cooking liquid.

Health....
7 Ways to get the best sleep ever!
You've done all the obvious stuff — cut out late-night caffeine, made sure your bedroom is dark and cozy, avoided scary movies or struggling with your to-do list right before bed. So why are you still tossing and turning?
"Certain habits you're unaware of could be sabotaging your sleep," says Kristen L. Knutson, Ph.D., assistant professor and sleep specialist at the University of Chicago's Department of Medicine.

And, as you may know, lack of shut-eye doesn't just leave you foggy the next day: Chronic, long-term insufficient sleep ups your odds of diabetes, depression, cardiovascular disease, even weight gain. So what to do? Try these unexpected tweaks, and wake up feeling incredibly well-rested.

Step 1: Halt your afternoon habit
Avoid drinking coffee or tea right before you hit the sack won't do you any sleep favors.

Step 2: Choose sleep superfoods
Avoid a heavy meal right before bed (a full stomach will disturb your sleep). If you've had a few nights of restless sleep, make a light whole-wheat-pasta dish with fresh vegetables, a little diced chicken breast, tomato sauce, and a sprinkle of Parmesan for dinner. This meal contains a snooze-friendly combination of protein and tryptophan, an amino acid that converts to sleep-promoting serotonin in the body.
If your stomach's growling late at night, try a small bowl of cottage cheese with banana slices, another dish that serves up tryptophan. Other combos of healthy carbs and protein, such as milk and graham crackers or yogurt sprinkled with cereal, will also do the trick.

Step 3: Sip wine sooner
Have it with dinner -- around 6 p.m. rather than 11-- and drink in moderation, so it'll wear off by the time you lie down.

Step 4: Take an early soak
Like to unwind in the tub before you snooze do it when you get home from work, not right before turning in.

Step 5: Stretch for sleep
Getting in a little gentle, restorative yoga before you hit the sack can help put your mind at ease, steady your breath, and reduce muscle tension without revving up your heart. Lie on your back with the soles of your feet together and your knees bent and dropping toward the floor. Place your arms, palms up, by your sides, keeping your shoulders back and your chest open. Close your eyes and inhale through your nose while slowly counting to four, then exhale while counting back down to one. Continue for 10 minutes, or as long as it takes you to feel fully relaxed.

Step 6: Set the mood for slumber
Keeping your room dark while you sleep is a great start, but bringing the lights down before bed is also important.

Step 7: Ban your BlackBerry
Disconnect an hour before bed, and put any gadgets on an out-of-reach dresser or in another room so you won't be able to grab it if you get the late-night urge.

Now get ready to wake up feeling so refreshed that you won't even need to press snooze on your alarm.

Believe me this is one thrilling, action-packed, intelligent, suspenseful film. Highlights of Today’s Show...
Interview with Dr. Nicholas Ruiz III and Natalie Rogers

Orlando, FL — YSL’s host Jose Miranda returns and pushes forward to discuss a hot button topic, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution — an Amendment which not only guarantees American citizenship to any child born within our country’s bounders but has also been attached to our civil rights and other court cases.

Suddenly the airwaves seem alive with deep and intense discussions as callers present their point of view to Miranda. As the conversation got more heated, Miranda who allowed everyone to share their concerns stated its ok to disagree. However, if we allow the repeal of the 14th Amendment to include immigration then what’s next? What exacting are we advocating?

Next, Jose introduces Dr. Nicholas Ruiz III, green party candidate for Congress in Florida’s District 24. Ruiz who is listed as the green write-in candidate believes that progressive leaders are needed in Congress. Is he the new wave of American progress?

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the August 24th primary elections. To reach out to Dr. Ruiz or to contribute to his campaign, please visit his website at intertheory.org.

And of course this week was Scribbles’ Corner. Visiting YSL was the Program Director of Florida BookPALS, Ms. Natalie Rogers and our very own Scribbler, Darlyn Finch.

Rogers, who knows the importance of encouraging a child to read and write on their own, goes on to say when we open a child’s eyes to other possibilities it awakens their imaginations. Giving them new hopes to dream and succeed, while developing within them a greater love and appreciation of literature, especially in children where English is a second language.

This is an out-reach program and volunteers are always in need. If you would like to help, you can reach out to Natalie Rogers at nrogers@sagfoundation.org or you can go to Facebook search for Florida BookPALS & PencilPALS and invite her to be a friend.

Fashion...
A Return to the 50s!
August 14, 2010
This fall you’re going to see crimson lips, corsets, and those up-to-there hemlines replaced by longer, more demure lengths, up to the calf.

The emphasis will be in prints, so don’t be afraid to use them liberally this season. Consider coordinating headbands and blouses, striped halters and corsets, black and white polka-dots and square prints, with a nautical-inspired take on the trend, like the nautical navy dress with white piping for a more fun and flirty look.

Also, think scarves tied at the neck for a more subtle fifties accent. No ladies I am pleased to announce that the poodle skirts are not making a come back but you’ll be seeing a great deal of the sheer organza fabric which adds to the appeal of this style. And, make sure your shoes tie at the ankles to complete your ensemble. Do accessorize those floral print dresses with a wide patent leather belt to build up the look.

However, lip colorings are more crimson this season. Don’t be afraid to go really red. Hairstyles, in keeping with the 50s flair and grace, will be more of the retro inspired look. Overall, I think the best way to describe this season's 50s fashion sense is to have you revisit the reruns of the I love Lucy Show, which was quite popular then and should give you a better image of hair, fashion, and accessories. The look is super fun and will make you feel fabulously sexy while producing those dramatic changes in your silhouette.

Mmmm Recipe...
Grilled BBQ Pork Ribs
This Grilled BBQ Pork Rib Recipe is a mix of different influences — a bit of Mexican flair with jalapenos and lime, combined with a bit of Thai flavor with the addition of peanuts and garlic. By using a marinade that's more of a paste in consistency, it both infuses the ribs with delicious flavor, and also really sticks to the meat.

With the marinade's sophisticated flavor, a lighter bodied red is best, while one that also has a good core of acidity will counterbalance the richness of the ribs. Beaujolais is an ideal choice, with a sunny freshness great with summer grilled foods. Choose a Cru Beaujolais from the Juliénas village.

WINE Suggestion:
2005 Domaine Pascal Granger Juliénas, Beaujolais — This Cru Beaujolais shows the varietals classic sour cherry flavor with a lively tartness. ($16)

"Steal"
2008 Louis Latour Beaujolais-Villages, "Chameroy" — more ripe and suave than the Juliénas, this is sure to please almost any palate. ($10)

Yields: 6 servings • Total Cook Time: 1 hour, 20 minutes

Ingredients:
2 lbs country-style pork ribs
2 jalapenos
1 cup of peanuts
2 large shallots
1 clove of garlic
1 lime

Directions:
Remove peel from shallots and garlic. Juice from lime, and remove stem from jalapenos.

Add peanuts, jalapenos, garlic, shallots and lime juice to a food processor or blender and mix until it forms a nice paste.

Season ribs generously with salt and fresh ground black pepper, and spread paste evenly on all sides of ribs. Refrigerate ribs for 1 hour to let the flavors sink in.

Prepare grill - if using a charcoal grill, shift heated coals to one side of the grill.

Cook ribs for one minute on each side on the hottest part of the grill - either over the coals or on the lowest rack of the gas grill.

Move ribs to the cooler side of the grill or a higher rack to finish. Cook uncovered for 10 minutes.

Serve with a squeeze of lime and enjoy!

Can Coffee Ward Off Cancer?
Drinking more than four cups of coffee may lower the risk of some head and neck cancers, according to a new study.

Researchers found that regular coffee drinkers – those who drank more than four cups of coffee a day – had a 39 percent decreased risk of two types of head and neck cancer: oral cavity and pharynx cancers. Coffee did not decrease the risk of a third type of oral cancer – laryngeal cancer. They looked at nine existing studies and analyzed how much coffee was consumed by more than 5,000 cancer patients and about 9,000 healthy people.

While these results are encouraging, it doesn't mean we should just go out and start drinking lots of coffee, says Mia Hashibe, lead researcher and an assistant professor in the department of family and preventive medicine at the University of Utah.

Hashibe points out that the main risk factors for oral cancers are smoking and drinking alcohol. She says the best way to prevent getting these cancers is to not smoke or drink alcohol, rather than drinking lots of coffee. "We wouldn't want to be encouraging people to drink that much [coffee], without people considering the other risks factors," Hashibe says. "Each person needs to think about how they metabolize caffeine or coffee."

In the past, there’s been a perception that coffee may be bad for you, according to Dr. Donald Hensrud, chair of preventive medicine at the Mayo Clinic. But he says that newer studies suggest that drinking coffee may actually be good for you. "Like many things, the evidence changes over time," says Hensrud. He adds that when it comes to the link between coffee and head and neck cancer, "the benefits outweigh the risks and this is just one more piece of that puzzle that supports that."

It’s not exactly known why coffee may help prevent these cancers. But coffee contains over 1,000 different chemical compounds, including cancer-fighting antioxidants, and it’s those antioxidants that may provide a “plausible explanation” for reducing the cancer risk, says Hensrud.

Other recent studies suggest coffee may have beneficial effects in other diseases like dementia, diabetes, liver and Parkinson's disease. However, coffee alone may not be the answer according to some experts. Dr. Dong Shin, a head and neck specialist at Emory Winship Cancer Institute says this new study suggests “there is a hint of beneficial outcomes" with coffee and oral cancer. But he is concerned that the side effects of coffee are not addressed in this study. Shin says when it comes to preventing cancer, the combination approach is best. He suggests “consuming coffee, tea, veggies, and fruits rather than doing just one thing."

Hensrud adds that there are some drawbacks to drinking too much coffee, including liver damage or increased blood pressure. Other possible side effects from drinking a lot of coffee include insomnia, reflux, heartburn, palpitations, urinary systems and increased fluid intake, says Hensrud. He says coffee can also be addictive and some people may suffer from withdrawal headaches. Too much coffee may make it harder to conceive and can increase the risk of miscarriage.
