Movie Review:
Mr. Popper’s Penguins — rating: 2.5 STARS
Despite the negative reviews, 'Mr. Popper’s Penguins' was charming. The penguins were endearing and Carrey does manage to hold his own adding some clever inserts. The movie was about innocents and family. A father consumed with work, inherits a couple of penguins and that’s where the fun begins. Just hearing the kids’ laughter to the pranks of the penguins bought out the kid in me and soon I too was laughing. It may not be so engaging for adults but for children and young adults it would be funny and entertaining.

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) — The source is a member of Harakat-ul-Mujahedeen, a Pakistani-based militant group is denying a New York Times report that a cell phone found during the raid of Osama bin Laden’s compound contains information that links his group to bin Laden. As the relationship between the two countries has been in a downward spiral over disputes about how to pursue counterterrorism efforts, a spokeswoman for the U.S. embassy in Islamabad declined comment on the situation Friday, saying, “We don’t discuss intelligence issues.” Diplomats have been meeting in hopes of repairing the U.S.-Pakistan ties which were strained after the May 2 raid.

Today’s Highlights...
Keep it here!
by Haydee Ayala
June 25, 2011
Orlando, FL — YSL host Jose Miranda can charm guests and listeners alike even with a raspy voice. And today, Miranda added his own music into the mix commencing with Black Eye Peas’ "Someday" before leading his listeners into his opening monologue then goes on to the news on the island of Puerto Rico. Just as Puerto Ricans on the island love their festivals, so do many here in the states and the biggest was celebrated Friday as the natives came together honoring their patron saint San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist).

Thousands of people line the beaches to kick off a flamboyant Mardi Gras Carnival-style celebration which includes music, food, and lots of dancing. On white sandy beaches, clear blue sea water, warm sun and alive with excitement, a national gala of fun! Unfortunately, there was a slight glitch involving some local vendors, their booths and the seashore. It appears that the local law enforcement were not in a festive mood and decided to halt some locals who for years have enjoyed putting up booths on the beaches giving tourists and beach goers some of the traditional fare.

In an effort to justify their actions they stated these vendors were soiling their beach. Way to Go! It certainly was a great tactical maneuver as it does promote tourism, brotherhood and inspire entrepreneurship within the locals! Nonetheless, it was just a small dent for the festivities lasted throughout the weekend.

In case you were unaware, originally the entire island was known as San Juan Bautista but later renamed Puerto Rico (Rich Port). Only the capital retained the name though shorten to San Juan. But if you dig a little deeper, the island was first referred to as Boriken by its original inhabitants, the Tiano Indians.

The program resumed with spans from news reports covering NY’s decision for same-sex marriage making it the sixth state to legalize it, followed by fashion, to the latest movie review which happened to be on Mr. Popper’s Penguins. There was a short announcement alerting our listeners of a career fair on Thursday June 30 at the Crowne Plaza (Downtown Orlando Hotel) from 12-4 p.m. Followed by a blend of music from key artists combined with a little conversation for Miranda loves interacting with Ayala and the listeners while on the air.

In spite that our guest of the hour was unreachable, the show was unstoppable. It was fresh! And then came the moment when you heard the music come up again either a break was imminent or we have officially come to a stopping point.

If you would like to hear the show from beginning to end and listen to Miranda’s music selections, go to our archived shows and listen at your leisure. But if you’re unable to recognize the artists/songs here is the list: China Latina, Hiroshima Obon Jazz, Lamento Borincano, Marc Anthony Valio la Pena Salsa y Tropical 1, Soy Tan Feliz, Sonora PonceƱa El Gigante del Sur Latino, Take Me There, Jackiem Joyner Lil' Man Soul (Bonus Track Version) Jazz, and Round the World

As we slide into the final minutes of the hour we hope you’ve enjoyed the show. We’ll see you next week. Remember...Keep it here!

Fashion...
Summer Trends in Swimsuits
June 25, 2011
Trends in swim wear usually don’t move in quite the same cycles as other fashion trends. So what can we expect for 2011 and into 2012, especially when it comes to choosing a bikini to a full body swim wear, the focal should always be one that flatters your figure? Keep in mind not every cut is going to compliment every body type.

If you are a full figure type embrace the vintage trend. These swimsuits look elegant. Mostly inspired by an era when the pin-up girl was considered a bombshell and extremely popular. They are playful, sophisticated and tend to silhouette a women’s curves nicely.

Bikinis have several styles including the high-waist bottoms. These are perfect for women that no longer possess 19" waistline but would like to show off their shapely curves. Of course, there are the one-pieces which come with cinched-in waists, sweetheart necklines and halters. Ideal for any women and of course you can pick either a solid to a playful print depending on your skin color.

Crochet bikinis are marvelous! However, on a personal note, these suits in my opinion are more for show than water. What has made it a popular style is the different designs and detailing—from cutaway to straps and strings to halter tops. One-shoulder bikinis/swimsuits are making a comeback with a thick, single shouldered strap that has a color contrast between the strap and the rest of the bikini. Then of course there are the string bikinis with strappings on vintage cut bikini briefs.

Pear shape figures with small bust, experiment with ruffles. This will add volume at the top making it seem virtually larger; and, if you use the cupped style with padding it will create curves. Now if you’re top heavy the reverse is true. In other words, use ruffles to the bottom only since this will add a balance to your hips. However, avoid unstructured crochet or string bikinis.

Females that are short legged and would like to add more length try a printed bikini top with a block-colored bottom as this will draw attention upwards. Avoid any high cuts as this will have an adverse effect making you appear shorter in length. Now, for the more athletic type woman who are not big on the curves can make the most of any style—from backless to crochet as these trends will show off a toned physique.

Your swim wear, whether it is the vintage-inspired, ruffled, crochet, one-shoulder, digit print, or cut-away, should always be one to compliment your body and making you feel shapelier.

Now pack your sunscreen because its time to hit the beach!

Sauteed Mushroom Salad
June 25, 2011
(Eating Well) Here we make a warm sherry-mushroom dressing to toss over bitter greens. The dressing wilts the greens until they are just tender. This recipe is quick, easy and a hit during these hot summer days.

Serving: 2 • Time: 25 MIN

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
1 small onion, halved and sliced
1 pound white or cremini mushrooms, quartered
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 ½ teaspoons chopped fresh thyme or ½ teaspoon dried
3 tablespoons dry sherry
2 tablespoons lemon juice
¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper
8 cups bitter salad greens, such as frisee, arugula or dandelion green
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:
1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Add mushrooms and cook, stirring, until they release their juices, 10 to 12 minutes.

2. Add garlic and thyme and stir until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add sherry and cook until mostly evaporated, about 3 minutes. Stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper and continue cooking for 1 minute more. Pour over greens in a large bowl and toss to coat. Sprinkle with Parmesan.

Prevent a Cold with This White Edible
June 25, 2011
(Real Age) Summer colds are the worse so give the frontline soldiers of your immune system some reinforcements by serving a skewer of white button mushrooms with your favorite meals.

Eating white button mushrooms may help make colds less likely. Seems something in mushrooms encourages your dendritic cells – important immune system helpers – to grow up and get to work.

Mushroom Secrets
Dendritic cells lasso viruses – like the rhinoviruses and influenza viruses responsible for colds and flu. Then they bring those viruses to your germ-killing B lymphocytes to be finished off. And though it’s not clear how or why, researchers think that polysaccharides – compounds in white button mushrooms – may help trigger the whole process.

But there’s no reason to hold out on mushrooms have a host of health-promoting qualities: They’re low in fat, low in calories, and full of a little antioxidant called ergothioneine, which is good for your arteries. So slice them up and add to them to salads, omelets, and cookouts for a low-calorie, fat-free, juicy, meat-free treat. Mushrooms are just one way to give your immune system a leg up!

Politics...
Paul Ryan Budget become Litmus Test for GOP Primaries
June 25, 2011
Republicans are already on notice that Democrats plan to use Paul Ryan’s Medicare proposal as a key 2012 wedge issue. What they didn’t expect, however, was that Ryan’s blueprint would also turn out to be a polarizing force within GOP primaries.

Across the Senate election map, in swing state after swing state, the House Budget Committee chairman’s plan for overhauling the popular entitlement program is emerging as a serious point of tension, a pick-your-poison proposition, forcing GOP candidates to choose between the narrow dictates of conservative primary voters and the imperatives of the broader general election.

“I think it’s emerging as the litmus test,” said California-based GOP operative Jason Roe. “The entitlement challenge is not going away anytime soon. It really is going to be the barometer for the conservative orthodoxy to measure your commitment to doing the heavy lifting. This is almost like the Grover Norquist no-tax pledge.”

The issue has already tripped up numerous leading Republican Senate contenders who can’t help but notice national polling that shows a majority of voters oppose the Ryan budget plan.

In Missouri, former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman said she “would love to be able to” vote for the plan — an unconvincing answer with plenty of wiggle room.

A representative for Steelman, who faces Rep. Todd Akin in the Senate primary, explained, “Her answer is very explicit. She liked almost everything about the Ryan plan. The Medicare plan, in her view, is that it can’t work. She will stand up before the false vote and point out what’s wrong with it.”

In Virginia recently, Senate candidate George Allen spent an interminable nine minutes during a TV interview, dodging a question about how he would have voted on the issue.

“I’m telling you what I’m for. If the people of Virginia hire me on to fight for them and their values in the United States Senate, they can look at our blueprint,” he told a local reporter last week. “I’m running my campaign. I like my ideas. To the extent they merge in with others, that’s good.”

Pressed further, Allen said, “I’m not a U.S. senator. If I were a U.S. senator, yes, I would vote yes or no on it.”

One of Allen’s leading primary challengers, tea party leader Jamie Radtke, has seized on the issue, characterizing Allen’s response as a “poll-driven platitude designed to avoid controversy.”

Even before the TV interview, Radtke sought to publicize Allen’s reticence by sending him a letter pointing out that Sens. Jim DeMint, Mike Lee and Marco Rubio — the trinity of conservative Senate role models, have all backed Ryan.

“We finally have conservatives in Congress who have the guts to lead and are putting real solutions on the table, and Republicans need to embrace them. No more politics. Will you join me in full support of Paul Ryan’s Path to Prosperity Plan?” Radtke wrote.

The political calculus is different for Allen and Radtke. Allen, a former senator, is the clear front-runner with an eye toward positioning himself for the general election. Radtke, on the other hand, is the upstart whose first task is capturing the GOP nomination with a giant-killing primary victory.

In the senior-rich state of Florida, Senate candidate Mike Haridopolos is another who went wobbly in response to a question on the Ryan plan — and was summarily tossed off a talk radio show as a result.

Pushed repeatedly by an Orlando-based host — nine times in 4½ minutes — to say how he would have voted on the plan, the Florida state Senate president would only offer, “I’m not going to get into that today.”

The exasperated host finally lashed out, “Get him off my phone. I don’t want anything to do with this guy. Get rid of him.” before cutting the line. The incident forced Haridopolos to clarify his position. He issued a statement the following day, saying that while he supports “almost every provision of the Ryan plan,” he believes “it must be amended to provide greater protections for seniors.”

He got whacked anyway. Former State House Majority Leader Adam Hasner, who is running to Haridopolos’s right in the primary, pounced. His GOP foe’s position, Hasner said, put him in the company of Senate Democrats like “Bill Nelson, Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid.”

A Florida-based GOP consultant tracking the race there points to a key 2010 statistic that suggests why Haridopolos might be wary of embracing the plan: In 2010, 55 percent of Florida GOP primary voters were older than 60.
“Clearly not the electorate to go off the rails for Ryan Medicare,” the strategist said.

Former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, who is testing the waters for a challenge to Sen. Sherrod Brown, nevertheless called the Ryan plan a “line-in-the-sand moment for Republicans.”

“We need to elect conservatives who will have the courage to take the tough votes and stand with the conservatives already serving in the Senate,” Blackwell wrote last month in National Review. “A good place to start will be to support only those Republicans who had the courage to support the Ryan budget.”

Blackwell’s op-ed was seen as a rebuke of Josh Mandel, the newly elected state treasurer and Senate candidate who has been avoiding reporters on the issue.

Former state Sen. Kevin Coughlin, another potential Republican candidate who backs the Ryan plan, told POLITICO he’s prepared to highlight Mandel’s evasiveness.

“For Josh, refusing to take a position is not leadership. We shouldn’t run away from that position. We should embrace it; we should sell it,” Coughlin said.

Eventually, GOP candidates are going to have to choose a side, Roe said.

“It’s probably prudent to stay ambiguous early, but there’s no way you’re going to get through a primary without taking a position one way or the other,” he said. “The base is not going to allow someone to get the nomination without getting an answer.”
