Movie Review:
Something Borrowed — rating: 2.5 STARS
“Something Borrowed” was disillusioning as the movie starts out funny then loses steam rather quickly. It is a predictable romantic comedy where bonds are tested and feelings hurt. Has a slight spin to “My Best Friends Wedding” with Julia Roberts. Then again, not so much as that film was a comedy about love, friendship, and the hazards of lying and Julia and the cast were phenomenal.

In this case, some of the characters in the film were disappointing because they were quite irritating. Even the main characters — Kate Hudson, John Krasinski and Ginnifer Goodwin — are a bit unlikable and annoying at times. However, what makes sitting through this film worthwhile is Kate Hudson’s amusing portrayal of an egomaniacal friend/enemy.

Overall it was a fair movie. My main criticism would have to be that the movie was just too long. Perhaps had the film been cut down about an hour, it might have had some promise of being a good movie.

Al Qaeda threats, terror plans surface
(CNN) — Al Qaeda warnings against the United States emerged Friday as the materials taken from Osama bin Laden’s compound continued to yield a trove of intelligence, including details about a possible attack on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Al-Awlaki targeted by U.S. military drone in Yemen
(CNN) — A U.S. military drone fired a missile at an area in southern Yemen within the last two day aimed at the U.S. born radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki who is known to have frequented there. However, the strike did not appear to have killed him, a U.S. official told CNN on Friday. Further, a U.S. defense official confirmed that the drone was under the control of the American military, not the CIA. Obama’s counterterrorism chief, Michael Leiter, has said al-Awlaki posed a bigger threat to the U.S. homeland than bin Laden did.

Roots of terror untouched by bin Laden’s death
Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) — As the death of Osama bin Laden reverberates around the world, the root causes of extremism (lack of shelter, security and a basic education) are largely being ignored. Abdullah said, “Extremist ideology in Pakistan and Afghanistan is made possible by the crushing poverty and governments which have failed to provide its people the most basic human needs.

Most of the adult population in Pakistan are illiterate and earn less than $2 a day. Bin Laden was a symbol and an illustration of a mind-set and ideology that lives on. It is that stability they hold to. Most analysts say in Pakistan and Afghanistan the perception is that the U.S. is waging war with Islam which is further intensified by almost 10 years of U.S. led military occupation in Afghanistan, where thousands of civilians — who had little to do with al Qaeda or the Taliban — were killed.

Government offers payouts to Hispanic, female farmers who claim discrimination
(Orlando Sentinel) — Program will compensate farmers who were victims of loan discrimination. The USDA now has acknowledged the discrimination. It is urging Hispanic and female farmers who can prove they were wronged to apply for settlements of up to $50,000.

The settlement, which some Hispanic farmers have criticized for offering too little and placing the burden of proof on them, will provide at least $1.33 billion to revolve discrimination claims dating from 1981 to 2000. Also, it has set aside $160 million for debt forgiveness on USDA loans that were delayed or offered with unfavorable terms or for an amount lower than applied for because of discrimination. Meanwhile, many farmers throughout the country have lost their land and millions of dollars, said Rudy Arredondo, president and CEO of the National Latino Farmers & Ranchers Trade Association.

Corporate Tax Cut Bill goes to Gov. Rick Scott
Tallahassee (AP) — Most of some 30,000 businesses that pay Florida’s corporate income tax would get a relatively SMALL $1,100 per year reduction from legislation that on Thursday went to Gov. Rick Scott who had sought a much bigger cut. Scott is expected to sign the bill because he sees it as a first step toward his goal of phasing out the tax.

Welfare drug test bill heads to Florida’s Gov. Scott
Miami Herald — Applying for welfare benefits in Florida? Soon you’ll need to get drug tested. A measure requiring the tests passed the Senate on Thursday and is headed to Gov. Rick Scott. What does this mean? HB 353 requires all adult recipients of federal cash benefits — The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program — to pay for the test, which cost around $35 (refundable if you pass the test).

The screen would be for all controlled substances and applicants would have to disclose any legal prescriptions. Those that refuse or test positive for drugs would lose their benefit for a year. If they fail a second time, they lose the benefits for three years. Parents who test positive must designate another adult to receive benefits on behalf of their children.

YSL Takes a Licking but Keeps on Ticking

Orlando, FL — Even when the chips are down Yo Soy Latino talk show host Jose Miranda will be the first to bring in the hour with one resonating “Good Morning Orlando!...oops Good Afternoon!” Miranda after giving his opening monologue reminds his listeners that we are not out of the woods yet. We’re working on keeping our donations up, and we're hoping our listeners will continue to support us. Radio like YSL doesn’t come free. Adding, if you have not yet donated please do so, go to our website and click on the donate button. It’s that simple. With your support we can continue to deliver quality programming.

Then Miranda moves on to discuss the national news starting with Mr. Trump who took center stage with the media saying “I’ve done a great service to the American people”. Really, so you’re taking full credit for escalating this stupidity to have our president provide his birth certificate which no other president had to do. Was it racisms? You bet it was announced Miranda. Never in the history of our nation has any president had to present such a document. Yet, too much emphasis by the Republican Party was being made over it. And the irony is even after producing it, there are a few Republicans about 2% that STILL feel he was born outside of the U.S.A. President Obama has greater concerns to manage then having to hand-hold a few who can not get passed the issue of a birth certificate.

Miranda goes on to spotlight the controversy surrounding the raid on the Abbottabad compound which lead to the death of Osama bin Laden and the aftermath which ultimately caused some uproar here and abroad. Followed by the situation between Gov. Rick Scott (affectionately referred to as “King Rick Scott” by Jose) and the Legislature — the abortion bill which now mandates the use of ultra sounds and bill HB 353 involving all applicants who apply for welfare. A bill that will require mandatory drug testing at the applicant’s cost and the consequences should they fail the test, a loss of benefits. Now the duration of this loss will depend chiefly on the number of drug testing.

There was so much dialogue exchanged but impossible to outline on this piece. If you didn’t get to hear us live, go to our archived shows and take a listen as a great deal of information was covered.

Well folks once again we’ve come to the end of the hour — dealing with issues that are meaningful engaging our callers in conversation and delivering a program that’s lively and entertaining. Remember good programming is like good writing and Yo Soy Latino delivers. However, to keep YSL on the airwaves every Saturday we still need your support. It’s easy just go to www.yosoylatino.us and donate whatever you can.

See you back here next week and for all the mothers and mothers-to-be, Happy Mother’s Day!

With so many fragrances in today’s marketplace it can be difficult to know which one will work best for you and choosing the right one can be a little daunting. A splash of perfume can transport you to another world as you feel the mist on your throat and then smell its fragrance. Different perfumes attract different people, especially those of the opposite sex and you definitely do not want to overpower another senses or air space. So here are a few which are quite popular in the stores.

Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere is a fresher and lighter version of the most famous perfume in the world, Chanel No. 5. However, this is the scent of a woman anew — tender and light enough quite suitable for different occasions and seasons. It’s a good choice for a wedding or a gift for that special modern business woman in your life.

Vera Wang Princess (EDT) ideal for teenage girls and young women because it celebrates youth and is most suitable for everyday as well as office wear; and, it is the No. 1 perfume gift choice for teenage girls and young women.

Hypnotic Poison Perfume (EDT) by Dior is appropriate for the darkest hours of the coldest days of the year. This audacious love portion is designed for pleasuring just two — Eve and Adam.

Hypnotic Poison Eau Sensuelle (EDT) by Dior is a sunnier reinterpretation of the Hypnotic Poison perfume, but with a gentler, floral character. It is sensual, lush, feminine, seductive and the signature fragrance of a modern seductress, most appropriate for colder days of the year, romantic and special occasions.

Euphoria by Calvin Klein offers an escape from your usual day and brings you to the road less traveled by, but where you’ve already been — to your dreams. It is a good choice for women of every age group, except teenagers and perfect for the adventurous woman.

Calvin Klein describes it best, “Euphoria is about a journey without limits. Inspired by a new found freedom, it’s about living one’s dream.” Euphoria is suitable for evenings and nights out, romantic and special occasions. However, it does make a very appropriate gift for Valentine’s Day, Christmas or Mother’s Day.

Smoky Paella with Shrimp and Squid
Switch out your menu tonight with this satisfying rice and seafood dish. Pair it with a juicy California rose.

Serving: 4 • Time: 30 min

Ingredients:
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 pound large shrimp, shelled and de-veined
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 cup Arborio or Valencia rice
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon hot smoked paprika
1 large garlic clove, minced
1 small pinch of saffron, crumbled
2 cups water
2 cups clam broth
½ pound baby squid, bodies cut into ¼ inch rings

Directions:
In a large, deep skillet, heat the oil until shimmering. Season the shrimp with salt and pepper and add to the skillet. Cook over high heat until lightly browned on one side, 2 minutes. Transfer the shrimp to a plate.

Add the rice to the skillet and cook, stirring, until opaque, about 2 minutes. Sir in the tomato paste, paprika, garlic and saffron and cook, stirring, until the rice is toasted and sizzling, about 1 minute. Add the clam broth and water and bring to a boil over high heat. Boil until the rice is still a bit crunchy and about half of the broth is absorbed, 10 minutes. Lower the heat and simmer until the rice is nearly tender and the liquid is soupy but slightly reduced, about 8 minutes. Stir in the squid then lay the shrimp on top, cooked side up. Cover and simmer until the squid and shrimp are cooked through and the rice is tender, about 2 minutes longer.

How to Give Yourself Natural at Home Facials
An at home facial can help you improve skin tone, reduce wrinkles and fine lines, treat sunspots and lessen the appearance of spider veins or damaged blood vessels. This combination of beauty and cleansing procedures can sometimes be costly at a salon — $100 or more!

A basic home facial includes four steps: cleansing, exfoliating, removal of blackheads and facial massage. You won’t have access to the equipment and products used in a regular salon or spa, BUT having beautiful blemish-free and glowing skin is still attainable. Spending a little extra on high quality products will give you the best results, but soap, natural masks you can make in your own kitchen, and oil- and alcohol-free cleansers will also do just fine.

Here are the four basic steps to a relaxing and beautifying at-home facial:

Cleansing is the first step. For people who have sensitive skin, a fragrance-free cleanser should be used to avoid irritations that can result from using scented products.

Exfoliation, the removal of dead skin cells that cling to the skin’s outermost surface, is next. You can use a facial scrub, an exfoliating cream or mask or a glycolic acid peel. These are the three most common products used in salons and spas.

There are also many natural substances you probably have around the house that have been proven to be effective for exfoliation, such as the combination of oatmeal and eggs. Here’s a simple recipe for an effective natural cleansing mask that uses simple ingredients:

• 1 egg white
• 1/2 cup cooked instant oatmeal
• 1 tsp. lemon juice (use the juice of a fresh lemon, if possible)
• 1 tsp. olive oil

To create the mask, place the cooked instant oatmeal in a bowl and add the egg white, olive oil and lemon juice. Stir until smooth, apply to your face and neck and very gently massage it so that you get exfoliation without causing any damage. Don’t rub it until it flakes away, just long enough so it will remove the dead skin cells. Leave it on for 15 minutes. If you can, take the opportunity to lie down while you wait, to enhance your at-home spa treatment with a little relaxation. After 15 minutes, rinse the mask off with warm water and pat your skin very gently to dry it.

Extraction of blackheads is next. A blackhead strip, such as BiorĂ©, can be used. Most of the time it doesn’t remove all of the blackheads, but if used routinely, it will keep your skin blackhead-free. Be sure not to use it more often than the package directions indicate though. A metal blackhead extractor is commonly employed in spas in conjunction with steam and is more effective, but you probably shouldn’t try using one unless you have experience with it.

Facial massage is the last step in your at home facial. Its main purpose is to improve skin circulation and also relax tension in the facial muscles. Once there is proper circulation, more beautiful, glowing skin will result. To massage your skin, gently massage upward as you open your mouth and extend your jaw. Try to release the tension in your facial muscles as you do the massage.

Having a beautiful skin doesn’t need to be expensive. All it takes is proper daily skin care, a good diet, a healthy lifestyle and a monthly regimen of facial skin care. The skin regenerates every four weeks, so a monthly facial is just what you need to keep your skin healthy and beautiful; and, the best thing about it is you can do it right in your own home.

Cannon: We had a deal; House goes home
TALLAHASSEE — House Speaker Dean Cannon told his chamber just after 2 a.m. Saturday that the Legislature’s budget conferees from the Senate had blown up that deal earlier Friday night when they refused to pass some of the 44 “conforming bills.”
“I’ve decided that our chamber would take the high road,” Cannon told the chamber shortly after it took up the bill it had been holding hostage — a tax-cutting package that had pari-mutuel language inserted. The House amended out the game language and passed the bill, then promptly adjourned sine die at 2:07 a.m.
Meanwhile, Senate President Mike Haridopolos is planning to bring his chamber back into session this morning to finish off the budget bills by passing the tax-cutting measure, and stick a fork in this session.

Legislature has no right making it harder to vote!
There is a so-called election reform bill that is rapidly making its way through the Florida Legislature, which right now is in the final week of its annual lawmaking session in Tallahassee. If this bill becomes law, it would:

• Significantly reduce the number of early-voting days (from 14 days to 6 days);

• Make voting harder for people who have recently changed their name or address, like, newlyweds or college students (and could result in your vote not being counted in the final results); and,

• Subject voter-registration drives to stiff legal fines, even for inadvertent mistakes.

This is not a partisan issue, and should be opposed strongly.

The Orlando Sentinel said, “it amounts to … ripping apart election laws” and “weakening democracy.” The Tampa Tribune wrote, “This bill isn't fooling anybody. It's not about clean elections.” And, Florida Today has called it an “assault on the most cherished of American rights.” While the Palm Beach Post has asked that we stop this “assault on all voters.”

But the state Legislature seems poised on passing it. One thing you can do is email Gov. Rick Scott and ask that he veto the bill when it reaches his desk.

The St. Petersburg Times couldn’t have said it better, “Floridians of all political stripes should not stand for it.”
