Prince of Persia...
Review Summary
The "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," is rather entertaining in a chaotic sort of way. Actually, there’s not much of a storyline here. However, it does goes out of its way to reference more recent political events. In the opening, the Persians invade a holy city to seize weapons of mass destruction and the movie's most engaging character is an ostrich race promoter who spews anti-government and tax rhetoric straight out of a tea party rally.

The "Prince of Persia" truly combines the mythical swagger and bravado of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" while adding some of the computer-generated visual effects similar to those in “Clash of the Titans.” The plot centers on a magical dagger, which in the wrong hands will unleash Armageddon. Overall, this film is sort of fun if you like video games. However, I would have to give it a YSL rating of 2 ½ stars.

Interview with Ramon A. Ojeda
June 5, 2010
ORLANDO, Fla. — Today’s show was filled with good-nature amusing mayhem as boys will be boys impressing their playful talents on the air. YSL’s host Jose Miranda and our very own engineer Raul engaged in some colorful amusing banter that just didn’t stop throughout the first-half of the hour. The Lady of the airways our co-host Haydee Ayala was away handling family matters which entailed the christening of her granddaughter but she did provide the team with a full program.

Regrettably, our distinguished guest, Ramon Ojeda, the President of the Hispanic Chambers of Commerce in Metro-Orlando was a no-show for this week’s program. However, that did not perturb Miranda the least bit as the show continued smoothly without a hitch and, before long Jose and Raul returned to that hot button topics, politics — discussing in part the issue of former GOP leader Greer who was charged with six counts of fraud and grand theft, to the situation involving the White House the oil spill and BP then on to the unemployment issues of 170,000 people losing their benefits to the events of South Carolina. Where a sitting U.S. Senator made a remark about the female Gubernatorial candidate who happens to be of Indian decent said "We already have one rag head in the White House. We don't need another one in the Governors mansion”. This latter issue set off a lively debate with our listeners about the silent 300 lb. gorilla called race.

Even though some topics can be hot YSL offers an open forum for all to unlock their views whether we agree or not, we can agree to disagree.

So come back next week and join Jose, Haydee and the YSL team as you just don’t know what you’ll be missing.

Don’t forget now, if it’s Saturday and Noon time fix those radio dials to the BIG810 WEUS AM because it’s time for the Yo Soy Latino radio hour.

Fashion...
Pinup Perfect!
June 5, 2010
There are plenty of high fashion designer swimwear this year. No fluff, definitely striking and some are out right hot. You can choose from a variety of patterns like hearts, multi-stripes, island floral, animal prints, polka dots even the typical checks all the way to neutrals and deep bold colors like orange, magenta, lilac, yellow, green, blue to a more muted gray or your classic black — there’s such a huge pallet of colors this year to select from.

So if you are heading out to the shore this weekend, make sure you prepare for fun as you throw yourself into the latest selection in swimwear and swimwear separates — from tanks to high waist swim bottoms, shorts or skirts, high cut bikinis and thongs to the one piece more vintage Esther William’s look (for those of you unfamiliar she was an actress in the 50s know as the bathing suit pinup and America’s sweetheart, this particular style is a halter neck with gathered sides, skirted front with full short bottom back) which is becoming quite popular.

You will definitely look pinup perfect in one of these playsuits or swimwear. Also, don’t forget those cover ups for those of you who are a bit shy and would rather shadow your swimwear. Accessorize! Add a sarong to your ensemble.

You can also stay glam this summer with your sunglasses, a straw beach hat and bag that will look adorable beside you as you catch those rays while you watch those sea gulls guide you into another world, perhaps in the direction of the opposite sex. So prepare to do some frolicking as you immerse yourself in the sun in your stunning bathing suit listening to the wind while you enjoy the food and good company.

Remember summertime will never look sexier and swimwear should not only bring out your skin tone but it should also compliment your body shape! So when you slip into that bathing suit it should be a style that flatters all of you then you’ll find yourself flaunting those curves while taking in that breathtaking panoramic view of the sea. BUT, don’t forget to safeguard against those UV rays make sure you apply plenty of sunscreen.

Shrek Forever After...
Review Summary
"Shrek Forever After," is delightful and worth taking the kids too. Here’s a quick glimpse of the story, Shrek who is in the middle of a major midlife meltdown is looking to get his angry back. There are plenty of bumps but for the most part the screenwriters never lose sight of the moral of this story no matter whatever else got tossed into the mix, Shrek remained the heart and soul of this film.

The usual suspects are back too — Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas who were the voices of Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and Puss in Boots, for those of you who have never seen a Shrek movie. However there’s a new addition to spice things up in this round. He’s Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn), a deviously delicious villain with a battalion of flying witches.

One of the nicest surprises of "Forever After" is the almost perfect combination it achieves between the artistry of animation (which is exceptional) and the 3-D technology. This film is a ‘thumbs up’. Therefore, our YSL rating is a 5.

Host Jose Miranda begins straight away to stir his listeners with stories, attention-grabbing topics and thoughts and soon those phones were ringing. Though we would love to focus on those particular issues we suggest that you visit our archived shows and take a listen to today’s program. See for yourselves just how well YSL manage the critical business at hand. We don’t want you to miss a thing!

Before long, Jose brings his listeners into a conversation with Ms. Darlyn Finch of Scribbles, a unique writing network. Darlyn shares the latest activities that are currently going on in Orlando for writers this month. Like ‘Poetry Night’ which is an open mic every Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the Cup O’ Soul in Winter Park beginning on June 7th and in the same place the 2nd Saturday Pajama Party from 7-10 p.m. This will include storytelling and it’s family friendly. So do stop by if you get a chance, should be fun! If you want to know more about writing, Scribbles or Ms. Finch go to darylynfinch.com.

Meanwhile, sitting in the studio listening to all the chitchat is YSL’s distinguish and invited guest, Ms. Magali C. Rassel who will discuss a sizzling topic, “Why OCPS felt a need to cut some areas of the Bilingual Program?”

She agreed to come to help resolve some of the fallacies that seem to flourish throughout the community and give our listeners a better understanding behind the rationale to cut such a successful program. A program as we all know was designed for students to learn in a mixed environment of English and Spanish their regular curriculum. But, many feel these cuts were arbitrary.

Ms. Rassel who has been with the Orange County Public Schools system since 1992 is one of the Directors of the Multilingual Students Education Services Department. Her role as Director is to deal with various area within the system — compliance, curriculum, program models, parent involvement, and grant management.

Jose’s starts out by asking about ESO? Ms. Rassel explains that ESO is another program (all in English) available to any student that comes to Florida who speaks another language and wishes to learn English. These classes are taught in the student’s native language providing it is feasible and they have the proper personnel to conduct the learning.

As the interview progressed, the discussion returned to the Bilingual Program (designed for students in K-8 grades) exacting that the decision to trim down the budget was chiefly based on information gathered throughout the district (FCAT and Cella) which indicated the feasibility of making such a cutback. This data showed that students in grades K-3 are already at the required level to move forward, meeting the criteria to exist the program. Therefore, their decision was to put the money where it’s needed most — to educate the students. The only grades affected were 4-8.

As far as teachers or paraprofessionals who were directly involved in the program these individuals were not displaced but rather relocated in other schools which had the appropriate student enrollment to justify the class or moved into the ESO program. Of course, one of the contingencies in this review process is how long this individual has been with the school system. Annual teachers on the other hand are reviewed yearly. Phew! That was a mouthful. There is just too much to cover here so we will have to bring Magali back. In the meantime, if you wish to reach out to her, send her an email at magali.rassel@ocps.net.

Guests on the YSL radio hour continue to inspire and fascinate our listeners with insightful interviews filled with warmth and humor. And, as the hour windups Miranda passes the strike zone and hits another home run. Clearly, even the title of this radio show says it all; this is one lively fiery broadcast.

Fashion...
Are we turning away from the frivolity of the thigh-high hems?
May 29, 2010
There was this interesting article in the NY Times which seems to indicate a change is in the air — a movement towards a very lengthy look, especially among the young. It’s the maxi trend!

However, the difference is it will be nothing remotely prim or saccharine about this look. It’s going to be edgy and have very pronounced urban overtones. The current versions though, even the most languid, are likely to be toughened up with a military parka or a biker jacket and paired with thick-soled shoes, similar to that of the Abbey character on the TV hit show NCSI.

Furthermore, this style is muted and at times austere, not like your Hampton-worthy maxi-dresses — a look that got noticed on the downtown streets a couple of summers ago. These new maxis are more of a Morticia (remember the Adam’s Family) — all black and sublime. They are darker and more sophisticated.

Keep in mind that darker and more sophisticated does not necessarily say seductive in the same sentence but more like rebellious against the alternative to the jeans, leggings and particularly the micro-minis that seem to pop up like wild flowers everywhere.

It is also said you’ll be seeing much of the maxi trend being accepted by the same cutting-edge girls who first embraced the micro-mini. So overall, it appears that this look will gain popularity not only with the young but also with those women who feel that the maxi-dressing speaks to a movement — women who want something less ostentatious and care more about quality than flash.

Another thing to remember about this style is that an elongated silhouette also represents a turning away from the frivolity and calculated provocation of a thigh-high skirt. So are we leaning toward a more austere sensibility, perhaps we are. There’s nothing wrong with accepting a more muted, covered-up feeling and moving on, especially if one feels that wearing short is unclassy.

On a different note, will this street-length skirt endure? It depends. People are waiting to see trendsetters wearing them before they take a chance. But I would think anything that makes you look longer more statuesque, makes you feel good, and gives you that lean figure surely is worth considering. Furthermore, it could be driving force that pushes us into buying it.

So come back next week and join Jose as he introduces new company members to the YSL team. But more important, a new discussion with another exemplary Latino, Mr. Ramon A. Ojeda President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando and find out how being a part of this vast networking organization can benefit you.

Remember, if it’s Saturday and Noon time fix those radio dials to the BIG810 WEUS AM because it’s time for the Yo Soy Latino radio hour.

Robin Hood...
Review Summary
Does Robin Hood hit the bull’s eye or not? Well, I would have to say it depends on the viewer. In the movies this character has been played by Errol Flynn, Kevin Costner and now Russell Crowe. Though it has amazing battle scenes and the location striking, impressively dramatic, I would have to say it falls short. Don’t get me wrong, it is a decent film. You’re definitely be swept back to the 12th Century where treachery, greed, ambition triumph. BUT, in this very, very long, bloody, new version, Robin is no more than an archer in the army of King Richard the Lionheart. The story hasn’t changed much in the sense that it takes you back to the character’s early life, to why he became the roguish outlaw of Nottingham but there were certain elements that were missing for me, the romance and playfulness of Robin, especially with Maid Marian like the ones I remember from the classic with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. So on the YSL meter from 1-5, I can only give this a 2.5 rating.

Interview with Ronald Blocker and Robert Hill
By Anthony Gaenzle

ORLANDO, Fla. – Jose Miranda, host of Yo Soy Latino, sat down in the studio of BIG 810 AM with Ronald Blocker, superintendent of Orange County Public Schools, to discuss the condition of our state’s educational system.

Blocker has held the position of superintendent in one of the nation’s top 10 school districts since 2000. He has spent the last ten years making an earnest effort to change the reputation of Florida’s schools.

For years, Florida’s educational system has been at the bottom part of all 50 states. Blocker has been working diligently to repair the system’s tarnished reputation.
During the interview, Miranda and Blocker covered various concerns facing our schools, including the cutting of paraprofessionals who assist students, for whom English is a second language, in making a smooth transition.

With approximately 160 languages and dialects being spoken in public schools across Orange County, the task of integrating these students can prove quite difficult.
Miranda and Blocker covered topics ranging from the way in which Florida’s stimulus money was divided, to administration of bi-lingual education.

The atmosphere became a bit heated when Haydee raised the issue of violence and bullying in our schools. Blocker stressed that the goal was to keep the students on the right path. He cited programs such as alternative schooling as a way to combat the problem.

The citizens of Florida are extremely passionate about the education of our state’s children and the conversation certainly did not disappoint.
Visit the show archives to listen to Jose Miranda’s interview with Superintendent Blocker.

Robert Hill, artistic director of the City Beautiful’s cherished Orlando Ballet, phoned in to Yo Soy Latino to discuss the present, past, and future of the company with host Jose Miranda.

Hill, who once served under ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov, described himself as a “blue jeans and a t-shirt” type of guy when asked about his preferred style. He jokingly likened his style to “Simon Cowle” without the anger issues.

He added that the casual nature of his style was adopted as a necessity, due to the long list of tasks that require much of his attention as artistic director. The company aspires to branch out from Orlando, catching the attention of the nation and even the world, leaving Hill with a full slate of responsibilities.

A crucial part of the company’s development is new executive director Juan Escalante. Hill stressed how important Escalante’s role in the company has been in taking some of the stress off of his own shoulders. Escalante deals with the financial aspects, allowing Hill to focus on developing the Orlando Ballet creatively.

Miranda, curious about where the Orlando Ballet is headed, inquired the company’s plans for the future.

Hill revealed that a sequel to the hugely successful “Battle of the Sexes” is in the works. Part two will have more of an international flavor showcasing the affect that culture has on the different ways that males and females relate to one another.
If the reviews from the first installment are any indication, “Battle of the Sexes II” should be a major hit.

When prompted to elaborate on what lies ahead for the Orlando Ballet, Hill explained that there is much in the works for the next two to three years. The company looks to press forward with the goal of preserving the classics, all while moving ballet into “today and beyond.”

To hear this interview in full, check out the show archives, listed on the Yo Soy Latino web page.

For more information about the Orlando Ballet you can contact Robert Hill at 407-426-1733 or visit the company’s website: www.orlandoballet.org.

Timeless Pieces You Should Have!
May 22, 2010
The best way to discover one’s own fashion voice is by experimenting. Eventually you’ll see how to wear an outfit while combining textures and colors for a more dramatic effect. But until then, here are a few timeless pieces that will transcend your wardrobe from day to night, like the staple little black dress, a white shirt and a trench coat.

The Little Black Dress
This dress will always be stylish, think of Katherine Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s—sexy, glamorous and timeless. It is one of the most essential items in any woman’s wardrobe. Mainly because of its versatility and slimming effect, always flattering a woman’s figure yet still allows her to demonstrate her personality.
A Crisp White Shirt
This shirt is both practical and versatile, with so many shapes and cuts to choose from. A classic white shirt can be paired with jeans, well-cut black trousers or this season’s Silver Gray pant. It can also be used for covering up a bad outfit or perhaps unsightly bulges, either way it’s an essential part of your wardrobe.
A Cashmere Cardigan
With this season’s very form fitted, move smoothly, feminine dresses, a cashmere cardigan is both practical and smart. Though cashmere can be expensive, it is worth it!
Denim Jeans
What woman can resist a pair of blue jeans! They’re simple yet sexy and you can relax in them. The beauty behind denims is that it can be casual or elegant depending on how you piece the outfit together.
A Trench Coat
Very Audrey Hepburn and a timeless piece full of mystery and intrigue. Wear it with oversized shades for a look ultra-mysterious or pair it with Sexy over jeans or well-cut pants. The key here is to choose a ‘classic’ trench coat for it will take you from season to season.
Ballet Flats
Quite popular! A pair of these stylish flats will definitely prevails over the high-heel chic and in the name of practicality it is an essential element of any woman’s wardrobe.
High-Heel Shoes
Though impractical downright sexy! A pair of ultra-high heels is a must-have to make any woman feel feminine and poised. It will make you look statuesque in any outfit.
A Stylish Bag
Every woman should have a tote or shoulder bag, a clutch and a medium sized handbag. Even a classic bag in a woman’s wardrobe is a must because a great bag can really make an outfit, so choose one that flatters your body shape.
