Today's show...

Jose Miranda took on the role of comedian as he delivered another entertaining hour which had the YSL team laughing from ear-to-ear. There’s just no telling what’s next with Jose. He has a passion beyond the obvious. As much as he likes to make people aware of what’s going on locally and nationally, there’s something that gives him even greater pleasure and that’s a connection with his listeners.

Jose spoke endearingly of his drive into the station asserting how people driving on the left side of the road should be cognizant of the speed limit, emphasis on “cognizant” and for those Kamikazes out there who pilot their vehicles with little regard for other drivers should learn to use those turn signals on the side of the steering wheel, it is there for a reason. To hear him laugh and express himself this way made everyone in the studio laugh too. What makes this show unique is that it is unscripted so the unexpected is expected.

Then Jose changes gears and leads his listeners to “Fashion” discussing with Haydee “men” trends for 2009 followed by more local issues before introducing his guest for today, Dr. John Bellomo, chiropractor and authority on the so-called “mainstream health and medicine.

Though we really didn’t get to the heart of what makes Dr. John tick you could still feel the energy in the studio as he joined Jose with his views. Discussing the Florida Veteran Administration having the lowest quality control of any medical facility and of any program out there; followed by, as a country we are such a pill pushing nation. Dr. John feels the state of Florida is so far over the top when it comes to medicating, medicating, and medicating.

He further states that we do need to fine tune these things and health care would be one area he would like to see changed. In our society we have taken away the relationship factor and have replaced it with a specialist factor. In other words, instead of having a direct connection with the patient and ruling out the causes (finding the entire trauma—emotionally and physically) which does take time and effort and a vocation of a gift from people who really want to help people and substituting it with the specialist approach or more importantly the dispensation of pills, which is indicative of the VA system.

If you have any concerns or questions, you do need to listen to what Dr. John has to say. He’s quite the adventurer and very contagious to listen to. We apologize that our interview was shorten but we will bring Dr. John back to the Yo Soy Latino show at a later date. For those of you who would like to reach out to Dr. John, he can be reached at his office at 407-295-1077 and if you have a personal issue and would like to discuss it with him you can call him directly at 407-832-1998.

The hour quickly winds down and Jose gives a warm thanks to Dr. Bellomo for being his guest and his listeners for stopping in and enjoying that cup of coffee with him. Come back next week and join Jose and the YSL team for more fun and conversation as we bring you Dr. Joseph A. Strager, DMD, General Dentist to the Yo Soy Latino show.

Also, don’t forget to patronize our advertisers/sponsors and let them know you appreciate their support of the Yo Soy Latino show. That’s the best way to thank them for the program.

Haydee’s Slice of Fashion...

When it comes to men's fashion trends the classics will always rule especially in men’s suits. 2009 marks a different change in the direction of men’s suiting. It comes down to a combination of factors which I hope to break down for you.

The most important being the cut! As we return to the classic ensemble we can not forget the most excellent being English suits for they have always had a slim military cut to them. So for 2009 into 2010 consider suits which blend the perfect fusion between classic tailoring, classic looks, and the modern masculine silhouette—broad shoulders, a slim waist, and slim trousers. Even the brawniest of types will look impeccable in these suits.

Then we have the double breasted suits, which takes the American box-cut to a slim piece of perfection. The cut is precisely what you should be looking for in a double-breasted suit—broad shouldered with a slim waist. It’s no longer about hiding a flaccid figure but taking the now tailored look to highlight the overall masculine shape—drawing attention to the tailored appearance of the suit and not the flaws of ones imperfections.

Now let's direct our attention to the 3-piece suit. It has long been a dead item for most men, but thanks to a revival its popularity is back as long as you keep it conservative and in the same fabric. However, if you do want to jazz it up a bit, stick to a similar color palette and avoid any pattern except for pinstripes, i.e., black with charcoal.

Next is the Oxford Bags. This is another alternate cut and classic style but not a long term investment piece. If you are like me that doesn’t know what the Oxford Bags are exactly permit me to share with you. They are loose pleated trousers first made popular at a British university in the early 20s but have taken a more modern appeal since. These trousers are nowhere near as baggy but provide comfort and are paired with a fitted jacket.

Of course, there is nothing more classic than the fashionable dinner suits/tuxedos especially when one is attending a formal black tie gathering or dinner.

Keep in mind that fabric will be one of the biggest factors in the price you pay, but selecting the right fabric will also play a big part in whether you buy an investment piece or a one season sensation. A clear favorite is wool with a thread count of 150. This is ideal because it is perfect for both hot and cold weather, avoid blends. Cotton suits are quite stylish; and, don’t shy away from a linen suit for it can be perfect for those hot summer months. Remember, the penchant of the fabric creasing only adds to the linen’s charm.

In summary, when choosing the perfect suit consider all of the following before making an investment. For example, the amount of buttons on the jacket really does depend on the buyer. BUT, the more buttons on a suit jacket the taller the gentlemen will look...just another visual trick however most effective. So unless you happen to be 6’ or more, avoid the one-button suit. Other 2009 suits are Vents (a simple suit and when cut properly is always preferred due to the perfect silhouette it provides) and last but not least is the Peaked Lapel, another of the great visual elements in men’s suit.

In closing, Jose and the YSL team wish to take this moment to acknowledge those “DADs” out there who are so often overlook AND are given a rough time about what they do and how much they pitch in. So on this Father's Day, we would like to pay tribute to how great you really are! Therefore, from Jose and the YSL team we would like to say a heartfelt “Happy Father’s Day” to you all!

Interview with Deon Long
Highlights from the June 6th Show

Cool Trivia...
In 1966 in America, black civil rights activist James Meredith was shot and wounded after entering Mississippi on a civil rights march. He was the first to brave the colored bar in Mississippi. Also, in 1944 the D-Day invasion too place. Just after midnight, the first wave of U.S., British and Canadian paratroopers plunge into the darkness over Normandy, France. It was the largest combined sea, air and land military operation in history. By the evening, 150,000 troops were ashore, and the Allies held roughly 80 square miles.

Today’s show...
After Jose finished covering the local issues— affirmative action, the two bills that were introduced both by Republicans, one for "enhanced police protection" giving police full access to files and information about anyone prior to questioning police who are under investigation. The other bill presented would have your DNA entered into a data bank when arrested on a felony charge, even if that charge was eventually dropped. These bills passed by majority of votes.

Jose urges everyone to reach out to your local politicians and voice your annoyance and concerns about these sneaky last minute bills which where passed. Be aware of what you are giving up! Otherwise, you are relinquishing your judicial rights. Then Jose leads his listeners to his guest for the day, Ometrias DEON LONG, giving him a warm Yo Soy Latino welcome.

After the introduction, Jose delves right in by asking Deon “tell me why the people should be paying attention to you and what makes Deon so unique”. His reply was very unassuming saying, “I don’t think it is anything unique about me per say. I just do what I do. One of the things that I did that would be recognized was that I ran for the chairman of the Orange County Republican Executive committee and 17 people were kept from voting causing a lose of 1 vote; but, you move forward and deal with other important matters, like affirmative action, small business programs, and things like that”.

Then Jose returns with another question, “Is the Republican Party able to save itself, if it can save itself; and, what can be done to attract minorities and others back to the party?” Deon confidently responds with, “I think our message is just fine, I think we have the right message going forward, I think it’s just the messengers. We need to have a kind of civil war bloodletting within the party so all the debate you see going back and forth, I think that’s good. It’s kind of nuanced. We have a strong conservative message, but a lot of independents a lot of republicans, conservatives left us because when we did have power we didn’t implement them. We went out on a spending binge. We did all the things we said we were against”.

“Even when you look at the bail out and everything that’s happened here, all of these Republican businessmen who are suppose to be paragons to capitalism as soon as there is trouble they are the first one over at the government trof saying come help me, we have to do something. I think there’s such a mix up between what the democrats are doing and what the republicans are doing that the republican conservatives don’t have a true parties and we have to reclaim it”.

“And a lot of people make the mistake of saying it’s on a social issue. It’s not a social issue! If you look at a lot of the republican positions being an African-American, I wouldn’t be anything but a conservative. If you go back through history back to the votes in Florida in the 1920s when they first got the voting right, African-Americans were always coming out to vote and they figured in the power of the ballot. And somehow we lost that! I believe that’s what happened and I think the same thing happened with Latinos because we’ve bastardize the system and we have to get that faith back in the system”.

Wow! Today’s program sizzled. Deon Long is an incredible man very savvy and down to earth. He definitely brings freshness to the Republican Party. To hear more of or more about Deon Long we urge you to go to our archived show and click on today’s program.

Mr. Long definitely has a promising future, perhaps his upcoming plans also entail a re-entry into politics but that remains covert at this time. If we welcome him back soon, he might be able to share those plans with us then. What do you think audience, let us know!

Come back next week for another cup of cafe con leche or espresso and join Jose as he introduces John Bellomo, D.C. (Chiropractor and authority on alternative health care medicine) to the Yo Soy Latino Show.

Haydee’s Slice of Fashion...
As I said “fashion” doesn’t always represent clothes, it can also be about beauty, hair, nails, and makeup. Today we are going to discuss the hot new hair style trends for 2009—layers, fringes, pony tails (my favorite), kinks, short, quiffs, mid-length, long hair, and bobs. Then we are going to address the most popular colors—red, blonde, and dark browns.

The Retro Dos. These hairstyles were influenced by the 40s and it represented a glamorous and well groomed look. But I must say this trend does require MUCH work and hair products. Lots of curls smoothed with serum and glossy waves then complimented by hair accessories—bows, diamonds, and feathers to give you an edgy look.

Layers. A style suitable for everyone! Layers add volume to your tresses. It’s an easy way to give your locks an updated look. Plus maintenance wise, it’s simple to keep and you can create a variety of effects using layers whether your hair is long or short.

Fringes. This is quite popular with the super short cuts. Though layered, it does give a full fat and eye tickling or visor like look.

Pony Tails. A great way to show off your beautiful face! The pony can be dressed up with hair accessories to give you a pristine look. Though practical this trend can be quite stylish. I personally take my hair and knot it then with a hair band keep it in place so that it doesn’t unravel. Or you can scrunch it, curl it or crimp it for a full bodied textured look.

Kinks. If you have a hot iron or curling tongs, this is the way to go. Just tweak the ends of your style to give a flattering touch of interest to an otherwise plain look.

Short. This cut is very practical, easy to maintain and flexible. Most short hair can still be ultra feminine, especially if layers are added to the cut. Color also can add texture, especially red shades because it can define and add a lot to the short hair.

Quiffs. This style is very interesting and most popular with the rock n roller. It definitely adds height and an element of glamour if properly done to both short and long hairstyles. For a fashionable evening look consider pushing back your hair then if you have bangs quaff the front. It will surely give you a dramatic yet trendy look.

Mid-length. Hmm—when your hair is not quite short or long but in the in-between stage—don’t worry there are plenty of options to consider. Cut your locks into layers or fringes. Then wear it up for a cropped effect or loose, add volume for a more feminine appeal or consider a pony tail or adding some quiffs. It is a flexible length that can add interest and some edginess.

Long Hair. Always fashionable as long as you are willing to put in the time to make it interesting and keep it looking healthy and shiny. Curl the ends or crimp it up. Don’t just put it back with a rubber band which I do not recommend and keep walking, style it. I recommend using hair treatments to keep it condition and don’t overdue too much with blow drying. Try to air dry as much as possible then if you wish use a straight flat copper iron to straighten it to reduce the frizzy, dry and dull look.

Now as for COLOR, the choices this season are lots of red tones—chestnut, honey, terra cotta, russet and raisin. For blondes an overlaying multi mix of shades within the same color family to give it a more natural and modern look. And last but not least, the dark brown—auburns and deep chocolate rather than that raven black.

The right hairstyle can add confidence to your stride, as well as a flattering and edgy look to your face. So choose wisely the one that most suits you and wear it well!

Show’s Review...

Yo Soy Latino’s host Jose Miranda began the program by dealing with a myriad of subjects covering issues that affect “we the people”. Living in unique times—foreclosures abound, unemployment on the rise, war, a failing economy and our ability as a nation to embrace change. The first African-American elected president, Barack Obama, and the first Latina to be nominated for the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor.

Clearly there are some objections to the appointment of the chief justice position. Yet this is a woman who is highly educated and deserving. Even the White House notes, Judge Sotomayor would bring more federal judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any justice in 100 years. So let’s give her the respect she's earned. She deserves a fair balanced review of the issues for the office of chief justice.

On another note, our listeners today got a chance to meet an incredibly inspiring soft-spoken delightfully charming woman, Dr. Nora Comstock who is credited with growing the organization known as Las Comadres para Las Americas.

Dr. Comstock took a group of 100 Latinas in Austin, Texas and developed it into a social web of 6,000 members worldwide. It is the networking connection for your soul providing the framework that allows Latinas/Latinos with more opportunities to further their careers and to build those Latino communities whether in Hong Kong or here in the states.

Latinas engage in dialogues about education, insurance, immigration, cultivating business contacts, employment, culture, and resources, among other things. It was Dr. Comstock’s desire to open these doors to women that were for a long time closed and a way to bring them together to reach their full potential. Taking pride in who they are, giving women who are either married to Latinos or are themselves Latinas an opportunity to empower themselves.

Dr. Nora Comstock is passionate about building communities and sharing those resources blending the face-to-face gatherings with email connectivity and potluck luncheons.

If you’re not yet connected to Las Comadres, you need to get connected soon! Go to www.lascomadres.org, join forces with Nora and the other members and be a part of this phenomenal movement, I know I will.

We wish to extend a special thank you to our visiting guest, consultant and guru, John Hamilton producer of the People Power Hour who contributes so much to the Yo Soy Latino show.

Come back next week for another cup of cafe con leche or espresso. Join Jose Miranda and his guest, Deon Long for another hour of engaging dialogue. Until then, God bless!

Haydee’s Slice of Fashion...
In keeping with the newest fashion for 2009 geometric patterns, stripes (vertical or horizontal) seem to ride high this season. A cool outfit to consider is an off-the-shoulder blouse with Capri pant. Mix and match prints (floral, zebra stripes, any animal print or stripes) but remember to keep one more subdue than the other, combine a print with a solid to maintain the background color of both.

Another popular style is the strapless dress. They can flatter most any body type but fabric does play an important role here. The heavier the material the more it will weigh you down. So no matter how well it fits, you can find yourself tugging at it all day just to keep it in place.

Here’s a simple suggestion you may want to follow. Choose a strapless bra that offers under wire or lightly molded cups—size is immaterial as long as it lifts and separates. However, it is recommended that you buy a strapless bra one size smaller than you normally wear so that it will provide that additional support and lift where you need it most, thus giving you a more flattering look.

For evening, add a lightweight neutral color wrap tied to the side or kept in place with a brooch to draw attention to your silhouette. Not only will add a more luxurious feel all night long but it will make it easy for you Salseras to dance the night away with that special partner. A style that will surely turn heads!
Much of the prints this season are inspired by Latin America and South Africa. So feel free to express your individual style. Remember you can still be that sexy kitten without sacrificing function.

Cool Trivia for May 30th...
Joan of Arc who was tried by an ecclesiastical court was burned at the stake in 1431 when she was just nineteen years old. Also, Hernando De Soto Spanish explorer discovered the west coast of Florida in 1539 after returning to Spain and was given the rights to conquer Florida.
