The Tree of Life
We Are the Night (Wir sind die Nacht)

Movie Review:
The Tree of Life — rating: 4.0 STARS
“The Tree of Life” is one ambitious film. It is imperfect because it doesn’t always communicate well. Yet, there were other elements to this film. It is stunning, profound and perplexing as it deals with man’s relationship to the natural world and the forces beyond human understanding. The “Tree of Life” considers some of the hardest questions that usually leave adults speechless especially when children ask them. This film can be illuminating if you allow yourself to just let go and get into the film and the undulating tones and imagery. If you do, you’ll be wowed.

I believe Roger Ebert from the Chicago Sun-Times described it best. “What Malick does in "Tree of Life" is create the span of lives. Of birth, childhood, the flush of triumph, the anger of belittlement, the poison of resentment, and the warmth of forgiving”.

President Obama meets with other World Leaders in France
Deauville, France (CNN) — President Barack Obama landed in France on Thursday for meetings with the leaders of the world’s top economic powers after a high-profile visit to London. The president discussed a range of security and economic issues during a one-on-one meeting with Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev. He also met with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan and participated in a full day of talks with other leaders of the Group of Eight nations.

Congress approves extension of expiring Patriot Act provisions
Washington (CNN) — The U.S. House followed the Senate on Thursday in voting to extend three key provisions of the Patriot Act scheduled to expire at midnight, sending the measure to President Barack Obama to be signed into law. The Republican-led House agreed (by a 250-153 vote) to extend the expiring provisions of the law passed after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The Patriot Act was quickly developed as anti-terrorism legislation in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, which was signed into law by President Bush Oct. 26, 2001 gives sweeping search and surveillance to domestic law enforcement and foreign intelligence agencies and eliminates checks and balances that previously gave courts the opportunity to ensure that those powers were not abused.

CIA team allowed to examine bin Laden compound
Washington (CNN) — A CIA team of forensics specialists has been granted permission by the Pakistani government to visit the compound where Osama bin Laden was killed. The team will search for possibly hidden or buried documents and gather up any additional information that can be found, a U.S. official confirms to CNN but declined to say when the visit will happen or if more than one trip is planned.

Hope gives way to heartbreak for some in tornado-ravaged Joplin
Joplin, MO (CNN) — A Missouri mother said Thursday that her 16-year-old son (Lantz Hare) was killed by this week’s powerful tornado. The teenager was ripped from a car Sunday night by winds exceeding 200 mph in Joplin. In a city torn apart hope gave way to heartbreak as authorities were able to locate his body and continue to try to track down many others. As of Thursday a total of 126 people were located and confirmed dead by coroner. Authorities are searching for the remaining 106 which remain unaccounted for.

Long-sought former Hutu militia leader Captured
(CNN) — One of the most notorious leaders of the Rwanda Hutu militia in the 1990s has been apprehended in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the U.N. International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) announced Thursday.

Justices Uphold Law Penalizing Hiring of Illegal Immigrants
Washington (NY Times) — The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld an Arizona law that imposes harsh penalties on businesses that hire illegal immigrants. The 5-to-3 decision appeared to endorse vigorous state efforts to punish employers who intentionally hire illegal workers. The majority opinion, written by Chief Justice John G. Roberts on behalf of the court’s five more conservative members, said that Colorado, Mississippi, Missouri, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia had recently enacted laws similar to the one at issue in the case. The decision did not directly address a more recent Arizona law that gives the police greater authority to check the immigration status of people they stop.

A state of uncertainty for the Romney Camp as It Looks to Iowa
Urbandale, Iowa (NY Times) — At this point four years ago Mitt Romney’s television commercials had been running here for 13 weeks as Romney fought hard to win the Iowa Straw Poll. However, this year there are no commercials, no bulging payroll and no headquarters at all. This is being viewed as part of the expectations game for Mr. Romney, a tricky calibration of not-too-high or not-too-low anticipation for how he should approach the Iowa caucuses, whose outcome will help set the tone for the rest of the party’s nominating contest.

Jobs Agency Paid Thousands to Companies owned by Board Members
Orlando, FL (Orlando Sentinel) — Workforce Central Florida, whose spending on superhero capes has sparked an inspector general’s review, had made deals worth more than $166,000 to companies controlled by agency board members. One benefited D& D Enterprises of Sanford owned by Dyke Shannon and a Workforce board member since July 2005 whose agreement was worth $21,606. However, in D&D case, the company was chosen in 2007 as an approved vendor.

The second Florida Business Interiors in Lake Mary founded by Dennis Bowman also a board member since June 2005 and received more than $144,500 to outfit the agency’s administrative office with cubicles was not hired directly by the board.

Though the agency killed the $73,000 campaign under withering criticism, the state officials asked the inspector general to review the matter. The office is also investigating the agency’s spending on vehicles.

Many nonprofit experts said giving business to board members is fraught with risk. It fuels charges of favoritism and raises questions about an agency’s governance. Alan Weiss, a Rhode Island-based nonprofit consultant said, “It’s totally unethical. If you’re on the board, you should forgo the chance of doing business with the agency.”

DCF Lays off 500 Workers, Claims Children will not be affected
Orlando, FL (Orlando Sentinel) — The Florida Department of Children and Families began issuing layoff notices Thursday to nearly 500 employees — a move officials said would save taxpayers $48 million while preserving the agency’s protection and care of abused and neglected kids. The layoffs are a result of budget cuts passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law Thursday by Gov. Rick Scott.

They come as the department has faced sharp criticism for its handling of the Barahona case in south Florida, where child-welfare professionals failed to “put it all together” in a case of child abuse, which resulted in the untimely death of a 10-year-old girl and her twin brother by their adoptive parents, Jorge and Carmen Barahone of west Miami-Date County. Both are being charged with murder and child abuse.

Jayelin Graham....Remembered
By Jose Miranda
Sometimes stories just jump at you they scream for your attention trigger a connection of some type this Story was such a piece. As is my custom on Saturday mornings I rose at eight set the coffee pot to do its thing and turned on the computer. This is a note about what happened.

The top of the news was from New York City and the headline read:

Saturday, May 28th 2011, 4:00 AM
Police remove a Cane Corso Mastiff from the first floor of the Brownsville, Brooklyn apartment building where 4-year-old Jayelin Graham was attacked Friday night.
Late Friday night on the first floor walk-in apartment in Brownsville, in Brooklyn, New York a poor neighborhood tough a women was screaming calling for help over and over she yelled “help me my dog is eating my son” the words stunned those who heard her as they rushed to help her but it was too late the lifeless body of little Jayelin Graham, could still be seen in the jaws of this massive dog blood everywhere.

By the time the police arrived there was chaos as a large group of people had gathered outside the building according to reports police said the mob as it was being called wanted to storm the apartment seeking retribution on the animal and the boy’s mother. Police found three dogs too Cane Corso Mastiff, a German shepherd, a Snake and where told they also had a Rabbit which had recently been eaten by one of the dogs.

Early statements made to the police by the mother indicated she left Jayelin along with to other siblings alone in the apartment for only a few minutes while she allegedly stepped outside into the hallway to get something from a stroller when she heard the screaming seeing what was happening and ran into the hallway to seek help.

Jayelin was small in stature usually found a little dirty and with clothing not always clean yet was polite and always smiling according to reports.

Now I have seen and heard a lot of things in my life. I grew up in New York City even walked the beat there as a cop but this story made me weep. I could feel this innocent kid feel his pain of how he was living not by his choice but just how life was dealing its cards for him.

Jayelin is all our kids innocent enjoying the life he was given he really didn’t understand he had anything less he had his brothers his mom and as they said he was always smiling. Who knows what dreams he had or what he would have become.

So I brought this story to share with you and you responded want to hear more go to the archives and hear the thoughts and commentary feel this child and remember Jayelin.

Eyewear – Bold, Retro & Ah-Mazing!
May 28, 2011
Much of this season’s eye wear will find plenty of pop because it takes its influence from the 50s to the 80s with color being huge this season. Of course, having that perfect frame can make you feel good about what you are wearing. They will add a little edge and elegance to your ensemble.

This season you can expect to see many styles in glasses. We’re talking bold square frames, round shapes, creamy neutrals and pearly finishes, metal frames, rimless and semi-rimless; and, of course the rebellious blacks. AH-MAZING!

Also, you will see larger round lenses in bold frames along with the retro cat-eyes in extreme or relaxed teardrop styles. Wouldn't it be fabulous to change out your glasses much like you do your shoes? Imagine wearing just about any style and having fun with it. So pick up a few! Perhaps in different colors like tortoise, browns, blacks, or maybe even a subtle pattern.

No matter which design you select or how many you buy, you'll be taking center stage. But more importantly, it will inspire your inner Diva to awaken.

(NBA) — The Los Angeles Lakers have reached an agreement in principle with former Cleveland coach Mike Brown to succeed Phil Jackson, the team said Wednesday. Eagles QB Kolb tries to Stay Positive while Trade Rumors Swirl
(NFL) – Kevin Kolb showed up to Philadelphia Eagles players’ workouts Thursday. Whether or not he’ll play with them next season is another question. The quarterback, whose name has been batted around in trade speculation all off season, can’t be dealt to a new team until the NFL lockout, now in its third month, is over. When that happens, it's anyone’s guess, so for now Kolb is trying to make the best of it.

Rib Eye Steaks with Pete’s Barbecue Sauce
Nothing says summer then firing up the barbe and with this recipe you’ll certainly turn up the heat. Pair it with Barons Black Wattle Original Ale, laced with native Australian wattle seeds, is rich, creamy and big enough for these substantial steaks. A bold Shiraz would also be delicious.

Serving: 4 • Time: 45 MIN

Ingredients:
1 cup red wine vinegar
½ teaspoon dry mustard
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus more for grilling
¼ cup finely chopped onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
2 plum tomatoes, coarsely chopped
1 cup smoky barbecue sauce
1 teaspoon sambal oelek
Salt and freshly ground pepper
4 rib eye steaks on the bone, cut ¾ inch thick (about 1 pound each)
Rosemary sprigs, for garnish

Directions:
In a medium saucepan, combine the vinegar, dry mustard and cloves and simmer over moderate heat until reduced by half, about 10 minutes. Transfer the vinegar to a heatproof bowl. Wipe out the saucepan.

Add the 2 tablespoons of oil to the saucepan, along with the onion, garlic and cumin. Cook over moderately low heat until the onion is softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Add the brown sugar and tomatoes and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the reduced vinegar and the barbecue sauce and simmer until reduced to 2 cups, about 5 minutes. Transfer the sauce to a blender and puree until smooth. Add the sambal oelek and season with salt and pepper.

Light a grill or preheat a grill pan. Rub the steaks with oil and season generously with salt and pepper. Grill over moderately high heat, turning once, until the steaks are lightly charred and medium-rare, about 6 minutes, total. Let the steaks rest for 5 minutes, then garnish with rosemary and serve with the barbecue sauce.

Hidden Heart Attack Signs in Women
As a woman, you may feel that a heart attack is not the greatest risk you face. But the threat is very real, especially in the years leading up to and following menopause, when hormonal changes can open the door to heart disease. Knowing the symptoms that women often experience during the early stages of cardiac troubles, as well as your risk factors for cardiovascular disease, can significantly increase your chances of survival.

Keep in mind that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading killer of women in America, accounting for over one-third of all deaths. That's more than the combined death rates from breast, ovarian, and cervical cancers.

Heart Attack Warnings Can Be Subtle
Studies on cardiac events in women reveal that many women may experience prodromal — or early — symptoms of cardiac distress in the days, weeks, or even months leading up to a heart attack. Unfortunately, many of these signs may be dismissed as nothing out of the ordinary — by both women and their doctors. The most common early warning signs include:

Unusual fatigue — Fatigue is a common complaint and one that may indicate that you're simply missing out on sleep, fighting a virus, overextending yourself, or experiencing a side effect to medication. But unusual or extreme fatigue may also be a warning sign of heart disease. In one study, more than 70% of the women surveyed experienced marked fatigue in the days or weeks prior to their heart attacks.
Sleep disturbances — Although it's not unusual to feel tired due to a lack of sleep or a particularly demanding week or month, you should take special notice of any unusual or prolonged disturbance in your sleep patterns. A recent study revealed that almost half of the women who had recently suffered a heart attack also experienced sleep disturbances in the days or weeks leading up to their attacks.
Shortness of breath during normal daily activities, indigestion, and anxiety may also be early warning signs of cardiac distress in women.

New York Special Election and Medicare
(US Politics) — The victory of Democrat Nancy Hochul in the May 24, 2011 special election to fill an open House of Representatives seat from New York had spinmeisters from both parties twirling out of control.

To listen to Democratic spin, it was the most important political development since Barack Obama was elected president and is a sign that they are poised to recapture the majority in the House next year.

For Republicans . . . well, to believe them, it was no big deal. They lost because there were three candidates in the race and the independent candidate took their voters.

The special election was necessary because former Republican Rep. Chris Lee resigned earlier this year after a woman identified the married congressman as the shirtless man who responded to her personal ad on Craigslist.

The special election pitted Democrat Nancy Hochul against Republican Jane Corwin and independent former Democrat Jack Davis in a race that was supposed to result in a Republican victory. After all, Lee, a Republican, was elected in 2008 and again in 2010. Lee's predecessor was Republican Tom Reynolds, who was first elected in 1998. In other words, this was reliable Republican territory until May 24 when Hochul won.

What happened? Both sides agree on one thing — the Medicare issue made a difference in the race.

Corwin embraced the plan developed by House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (a Republican from Wisconsin) that would convert Medicare into a program that would subsidize private insurance for senior citizens, replacing the current program in which the federal government provides senior citizens with insurance. Those 55 in 2011 would be in the old program; younger people in the new one.

Republicans argue that such a huge change is needed in order to keep Medicare solvent. Democrats hammered Corwin on the issue, saying that it would end Medicare for seniors and such drastic changes aren't necessary.

After the election, both sides agreed that Medicare played a role, although they disagreed on its importance.

"We served notice to the Republicans that we will fight them anywhere in America when it comes to defending and strengthening Medicare," said Rep. Steve Israel (Democrat from New York), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the campaign organization for House Democrats. "Even in one of the most Republican districts, seniors and independent voters rejected the Republican plan to end Medicare. The American people will continue to hold House Republicans accountable for their plan to end Medicare from now until Election Day 2012."

House Speaker John Boehner (a Republican from Ohio) acknowledged that Medicare played a "small" role.

But Rep. Pete Sessions (a Republican from Texas), Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, blamed the independent candidate Davis, a former Democrat and downplayed any implications regarding Hochul's win. "History shows one important fact: the results of competitive special elections from Hawaii to New York are poor indicators of broader trends or future general election outcomes" he said. "If special elections were an early warning system, they sure failed to alert the Democrats of the political tsunami that flooded their ranks in 2010."

Two things are clear from the special election. The Medicare issue is going to be a factor in coming elections and the spinmeisters are in great form already.
