Nightmare on Elm Street...
Review Summary
Regrettably Michael Bay’s effort to breathe new life into the re-imagining of the classic horror story just doesn’t come close to the original. However, the new Freddy is still scary, even if he’s not as entertaining as Robert Englund. You still have the chilling, creepy, bloodcurdling, menacing actions of the legendary Freddy Krueger, deceased child killer who torments the dreams of the teenagers of Springwood, OH. On the YSL meter from 1-5, this movie’s rating is a 3.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
May 8, 2010
Today’s show had a lineup of varied, interesting and engaging guests such as Brad Kuhn, Darren Soto, Linda Landman-Gonzalez and Lisa Warren. Good thing the show did not run out of time given its positively grand lineup.

But in order to accommodate each and every one of our distinguished visitors, there was a slight format change. However, that shouldn’t be news to our listeners because mixing things up is what we do at YSL and that’s what makes us a cut above the rest. We believe in bringing you the best of the best, which means last minute changes, can and will pop up. Furthermore, for our listeners who were looking forward to listening to our popular topics for today — like trivia, fashion, recipes, cigars, movies, health, etc. — do not despair for you can still check these subjects out on the website.

After discussing a few of the local issues YSL’s host, Jose Miranda, reaches out to Brad Kuhn who’s the Executive Director of Bike/Walk Central Florida.org. A brand new non-profit group formed to help promote walking and bicycling here in Central Florida.

Brad talks about an upcoming citywide event that’s taking place on Wednesday May 19th from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., “Bike to Work Day!” This event will rally at Infusion Tea, 1600 Edgewater Drive, Orlando FL. So if you’re thinking green which we all should be and looking for a good work-out traversing the many hilly roads of the area, join Mayor Dryer, Brad Kuhn and many other cyclists and walkers as they take to the flat asphalt bike paths for this exemplary cause. Don’t forget though to wear a helmet if you’ll be riding your bike.

Next, Jose introduces Darren Soto (D) State Representative for Orlando who shed some light on his week’s activities relating to foreclosures, homesteaders’ rights, in addition to other safety issues. Darren also mentioned an upcoming Puerto Rican Economic event that will be taking place on May 21st at the Ramada Orlando Celebration Hotel. The purpose of this gathering is to create a vision for a greater Puerto Rican community on the USA Mainland through economic, social, and political empowerment. To register, please visit www.dynamiccdc.com. If you have any questions or feel a need to speak with Darren, you can do so by emailing him darren.soto@myfloridahouse.gov.

Then Jose presents Linda Landman-Gonzalez who is the Vice President of Community Relations and Government Affairs for the Orlando Magic. Prior to that, she worked with Darden Restaurants as their director of diversity and community affairs. Under her guidance, the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation helped to fund 25 local agencies in 2008. What's more she worked closely with the Magic to ensure minority participation on the construction of the Events Center downtown. Linda’s laid back lighthearted demeanor is a joy in itself. It is our belief that Linda Landman-Gonzalez is going to make an even bigger impact in Orlando. So keep a watchful eye on this honorary Latina.

Lastly, Jose makes ready to introduce yet another remarkable guest, Ms. Lisa Warren. Warren a former journalist believes reading is the most important skill a person needs in life to be successful. Yet one in every five adults reads below a 5th grader. As the community relations manager for the Adult Literacy League she seeks to change those odds by getting the word out. This organization offers a number of classes to those seeking to learn. Don’t let your fears stop you. Remember reading is fundamental and it’s for everyone. Check out their website at www.adultliteracyleague.org or call them at 407-422-1540. There is a one-time registration fee of $20, but that’s it. Volunteers are always needed. If you wish to volunteer your time, then do so you will not be turned away.

Best Hair Length and Treatment After 40
May 8, 2010
No matter how great you look, if you're over 40, your hair isn't what it used to be. Hormonal changes (especially at menopause), years of chemical processing and heat styling, even dieting and of course smoking, all contribute to skimpier volume, a receding hairline, broken wisps around the face, and a widening part. The gradual decline of estrogen tends to slow hair growth; it also reduces production of collagen, so hair becomes drier and more brittle and loses its shine and radiance. Even gray hair — whether you color it or not — have a coarser texture and at that point color may not adhere well.

You can always fake healthier-looking hair with quick fixes but wouldn’t it be best to boost your hair health in the long term simply by adding the right products and care. Here are suggestions of what you’ll need — rich, nourishing conditioners; protein-based masques; concentrated silicone or botanical serums to reduce frizz and add shine; non-drying mousses and styling sprays; creams to create a body-building base for blow-drying; light, leave-in conditioners for smoothness, silkiness, and manageability.

Once you know the right treatment, you’ll be able to consider the proper cut. Ignore the conventional wisdom for hair after 40 which is a well-mannered middle length which I’m told works for everyone. Your sexiest hair length may be a lot longer — or shorter — than you thought.

Short hair, for instances, can work for you if you have the following — a very delicate or very large features, a fairly firm jaw, a well-shaped head, and an elegant neck. The key is proportion and your jaw line. If the bottom tip of your chin is more than 2 1/2 inches lower than the bottom of your earlobe, short hair won't look good unless you increase the length at the nape. In other words, the back can be short but cut the front slightly below your chin, almost touching your neck/décolletage this will draw less attention to the neckline.

The advantage to short hair is that it is easy and more manageable. You never have to worry about your hair looking messy or rain wrecking your blow-out. It's easy to disguise re-growth by eliminating a part or running your hands through for a choppy, disheveled effect. More important, it is cut frequently which means it tends to be healthier, even with extreme color changes.

Long Hair, though it can be high maintenance, it is STILL very feminine and by adding a few tricks —eye makeup can bring about a more dramatic creation for those special occasions, bangs (blunt bangs or side swept bangs) can also be used to change the appearance of your face shape as well as layering. If you are unsure about your true shape, pull your hair off your forehead with one hand, look in the mirror and with your eyes trace the outline of your face. If you can’t do it visually that way, use a lipstick (make sure it’s not your favorite though) and trace your outline on the mirror. That should help you figure out your face shape.

So if you cling to long hair remember it does require care and trimming is a must. Remove split ends before they get worse. Keeping it healthy is KEY! If you do, the results will be a smoother, healthier-looking style.

Wow! This certainly was quite the hour. Next week YSL looks forward to bringing you more amazing trailblazers, Ms. Betty Martinez Lowery, Mr. Manny Ruiz and Ms. Angela Sustaita-Ruiz. So come back and join us for another exciting Saturday.
