Highlights of Today’s Show...
December 26, 2009
What a year it has been! Each week Jose encourages listeners to be a part of the YSL radio show with a smile, saying kind words and bringing the best talents to our listening audience, reaffirming that a little hard work and determination certainly does pay off.

Today Jose opens with a warm hearted upbeat monologue before going into some of the captions of the show like cool trivia, movies, recipe, wines, etc. Then spends some time chatting with co-host Haydee before covering more of the news then proceeds to announce YSL’s guest interview, Ms. ALICE WANG — an education dynamo who is a summa cum laude graduate in English, Economics, and a Liberal Arts honors program from the Harvard Law School. In addition, Ms. Wang served as law clerk to Judge Judith Rogers of the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit and is now working as a supervising attorney in the appellate division of the DC Public Defender Service.

While she has a pretty demanding career in criminal law and immigration rights advocacy, she managed to organize a group of young professionals to volunteer their time and energy in the launching of "The Esparanza Education Fund" which offers high school seniors who are immigrants a chance at college scholarships in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

There are of course several steps in the application process and the criteria can be daunting however when done these students are given scholarships ranging from $5,000 for a 2-year college or $10,000 for a 4-year university. The progression however does not stop there. In addition, there is a mentoring program in place designed to assist students in clarifying expectations, help them in addressing academic problems and give them advice about college and about their futures.

Since its inception this year the Esperanza Fund has received over 300 applications and raised over $50,000 through private contributions. Quite an accomplishment for a newly established organization, that is exceptional.

Alice spoke of three candidates in particular whose stories were unique and each one had mitigating situations. She reminded us that this country was built on revival. At the moment, the program is only available to high school seniors. Perhaps that will change has they continue to redefine their plans. For more information, go to www.esperanzafund.org.

That’s a lot, and it was just the highlights! If you didn’t get a chance to hear the broadcast LIVE go to our archived shows and play it back and while you’re there listen to our past shows as well.

In looking ahead to 2010, YSL will continue to cover the tough topics, asking the questions you want answered about the region we live in, the community we work in, as well as highlighting the many differences and likeness of the cultures — the journeys, the struggles and the successes of individuals who by example inspire, move us further in understanding the growing trend of this budding culture.

Hair & Beauty....
Hot Holiday Makeup Tips
December 26, 2009

Here are a few of the hottest hints.

HAIR
Add Frizz-Ease by John Frieda prior to blowing out and styling your hair or any other product that’s encapsulated with silicone. This will give you hair the glow and shine that will complete your holiday look.

LIPS
Go for the 24-karat-gold lips. Wearing golden makeup can give you that sultry come-hither look especially in low lighting so give your mouth a flirty finish, layer on translucent gold lipstick. If you want to give it a bit more color adds your regular lipstick first then the translucent gold lipstick which will give it that added dimension.

SCENT & SENSUALITY
Spray on a dark, musky, warm scent. This type of aroma is irresistible. Spritz from the backs of your knees up since heat rises which diffuses the scent or use a cotton ball like I do then spritz the fragrance on to it and apply (this process is great and allows you to target just those specific areas).

Swathe yourself in sensuality by surrounding yourself in silk, satin, and velvet to make your body equally soft and to eradicate all traces of dryness. Slather on an extreme body cream formulated with ingredients that keep you hydrated around the clock. (Try St. Ives 24 Hour Moisture Advanced Therapy Lotion or Vaseline Sheer Infusion with Stratys 3.

EYES & SKIN
Nothing garners attention like smoky eyes. To create the look, begin with four (4) colors. These colors should compliment your own eye color and skin tone. Don’t limit yourself as you can pick from an array of colors not just the blacks or grey tones. Personally, I prefer the blacks and grays.

1. Apply a cream concealer over your eyelid to create a smooth base for your eye shadow.
2. Use a pencil liner (black or gray looks best) to trace your top lash line from the inner corner to the outer. Then, use the same pencil to dot between your lower lashes. Smudge both lash lines with a cotton swab or an eyeliner brush.
3. Sweep powder shadow (brown, gray, eggplant (purple) even a dark green all work with black or gray liner) over your lid and into your crease, blending the color up and outward (Cover Girl Perfect Blend Pencil in Basic Black and Lush-Lash Mascara in Black). ACCENT YOUR EYES WITH a METALLIC SHADOW.

TIP: To prevent color from fading and give your lids a more shimmery finish, pat a cream shadow over the concealer on your lid first, wait five minutes, then top with a matching powder shadow.

4. Dust a lighter, neutral eye shadow (such as ivory) over just your brow bone.
5. Finish with two coats of black mascara.

For your skin add a bit of sheen to your skin on your cheeks, lips and down your nose. But don’t stop there! You can light up your body too by smoothing on a shimmer lotion like Delux Beauty Liquid Bronze bronzing lotion for face and body.

NAILS
Get light hues, nude or even Red tones for your nails for a bit of old-fashioned elegance. Don’t forget your toes as this completes the look.

Now slip into your holiday dress and celebrate.....
Happy New Year
2010!

Whew, what a year! Next week we will have a special treat for our listeners as we reflect on the best of YSL 2009. So come back and enjoy that cup of coffee with Jose, Haydee and the YSL team.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
December 19, 2009
It is not often that Yo Soy Latino goes guestless but today was one of those days as our scheduled visitor was taken ill and could not be with us. Nonetheless, the show went off without a hitch and our listeners and callers couldn’t have been more effusive. The show was entertaining, fast-paced and compelling! Filled with great discussion as Jose, besides being entertaining is sincere without being sugary, tends to cut right to the chase, never pulling any punches yet deviling into serious matters.

So as the hour unfolds, Jose greets his listeners then asking that hot topic button question, “Can we afford not to do anything about the healthcare issues?” It’s such a hot topic that our board operator felt obliged to jump into a discussion on the healthcare reform which led into one fiery debate.

Today there are 160 million Americans who get their coverage through their employer and that still would remain unchanged though it will require nearly everyone to get insurance or face a penalty. Furthermore, businesses would be obliged to provide coverage or contribute to its cost.

In large, the plan of both bills cuts relatively close to the strategies that emerged over the summer and fall from the five Congressional committees, and unanimously opposed by Republicans. So is the final analysis correct that the bills would expand coverage by making more lower-income people eligible for Medicaid, and by offering subsidies to help moderate-income people buy insurance? Further, that they would halt insurance companies from denying coverage of pre-existing conditions, and would it create insurance exchanges — new government-regulated marketplaces where individuals and small businesses could come together to buy coverage.

For now, Democrats consider these measures as a huge leap forward in both extending coverage to the tens of millions of Americans who currently lack it and in beginning the process of managing these escalating heath care costs so that they don’t run a muck. However, Republicans have passionately denounced them stating this as a giant expansion of government that will prove unaffordable and undermine the coverage of those who currently have it. Of course we must not forget the very same thing has been said of Medicare.

While Congress continues to tinker with both bills, what are your feelings? Please feel free to leave your comments and thoughts or you can even send an email to yosoylatino5@aol.com. Let us know what you think. We’ll be happy to address your concerns next week.

Jose also touched upon the upcoming Census then on to trivia, top movies and releases, to today’s stogie picks. Of course there was considerable chitchat in the studio as we looked at the bottom line to retailers enticing the public to checking out sales and giving back to the community. Whoa! That was pretty cool.

We wish to thank Dr. Linnda Durre for calling in and sharing some time with us. She’s a remarkable woman and host of her own radio show right here on WEUS 810AM Monday thru Friday from 12-1 PM. On Monday Dr. Linnda plans on having Santa Claus. So we hope you got a chance to listen and possibly speak to the big man himself.

Gifts Ideas for $10.00
December 19, 2009

Give the Gift of Art
A beautiful painting is a different and unique gift idea. Find something that fits your budget and wow someone this Christmas.

A Magazine Subscription for Any Interest
Consider a gift subscription to a magazine. It’s affordable, straight-forward and it shows you were thoughtful. Plus you can find something for everyone.

Prepare Some Potpourri
Search for potpourri recipes online and make your own or pick up seasonal scents like cinnamon and pumpkin then wrap it tightly either in woven fabric or cellophane and decorate with a ribbon.

Bead a Candle
Create an inexpensive, unique present. Add decorative beadwork to plain candle using clear-drying glue and let your creative side take over with the beads. Choose beads that mean something to the recipient, like their favorite colors, it’s just about adding a personal touch.

Scarf and Glove Set
K-mart is offering sets for under $8. It will surely come in handy during those chilly nights.

Create an Eco-Friendly Wreath
Use fresh Christmas-tree clippings, or shop for a wire wreath frame in the craft aisle. Decorate with pine cones, holly berries, mistletoe or other organic materials. Some of which can be found in your yard.

Make Bath Salts
Purchase unscented bath salts or therapeutic Epsom salts. Fill a glass jar with the salts and sprinkle them with a few drops of scented massage oil or essential oils. Decorate the jar and include a handwritten note. Perhaps with words encouraging the recipient to relax and enjoy a hot bath to relieve the stress of the day.

Design a Custom Frame
Decorate a plain picture frame with recycle household items. Cut out pictures or use old tiles and create a mosaic pattern. If you want to add some glitz, use gold spray paint to embellish the frame. Then add a picture that’s dear to them.

Put Together a Beginner’s Knitting Kit
If you know someone who would love to learn how to knit, fill a basket with a set of knitting needles, chunky yarn and a knitting book or DVD.

The general idea is to do something different this Christmas. Let your loved ones know you put extra thought and creativity into your gifts. Let your gifts be remembered long after you've given them.

Before closing, YSL was proud to giveaway tickets to the Orlando Ballet's The Nutcracker. So for those of you who took advantage and called in for those tickets, please give us a call Saturday and let us know what you thought of the program. We would love to hear your views.

Well, that concludes our show for today. We couldn’t do the things we do if it weren’t for the support of our listeners, sponsors and advertisers. Next week we look forward to having Ms. Alice Wang as our guest. So come back and enjoy that cup of coffee with us.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
December 12, 2009
Amidst the shuffling of papers we could tell that something was brewing way before we went on the air as Jose announced, “We have an unexpected guest at YSL today!” And with that said, he made known that our surprise visitor would be the one and only Cris Franco comedian extraordinaire. Suddenly, you heard the rows of laughter rising as we laugh and laugh and laugh because we all knew that today’s show would be packed with mischief.

As Jose begins the hour in his own inimitable and fearless way greeting his listeners then shines a little ray of humor on the Tiger Woods’ infidelity dilemma, unquestionably taking the early hour of the show into a far more edgy yet funny climate while throwing in a little slap stick humor merely to remind us that if Woods were not a celebrity who would even care what he did.

Yet the simple truth is that Tiger Woods is a hot topic these days and not for being the kind of man he is on and off the course but for his indiscretions. Perhaps we all should be reminded of a quote by George Orwell, “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.” So let’s move on to a newsworthy topic as Woods openly admitted his transgressions. He’s not the first who’s fallen from grace nor will he be the last.

Jose recovers after some light banter and leads his audience into today’s trivia, followed by the top ten movies and new releases, to stogie picks, then on to today’s wine selections. Afterwards, turns his attention to Haydee who just happened upon some neat fashion wear to give any Diva a more curvaceous figure under that ideal holiday party dress. So if you have that perfect dress for the holidays but would like to camouflage those unsightly lumps and bumps after indulging in your Thanksgiving feast, well here are a few ideas to slim and trim your body for that perfect dress.

A spanx strapless hide and sleek for about $72 can give your look a more slim and sexy approach. It conceals lines, slims figure, while giving top light support. Also, don't think you can't show off your back in a sexy backless dress because bra-less is not your style! So ahead and welcome the backless trend back into your life with Maidenform women's breakthrough backless bra priced at about $15-32.

And, for those of you who need more support consider the ‘Yummie Tummie’ tank and hip support, which flawlessly slims your mid-section and hips allowing you to slip into your party dress with ease, while camouflaging those unsightly lumps and bumps. Further, to tone the two hardest areas, the biceps and triceps of course there’s this amazing arm slimmer that will do just the trick from All Tres Sleek Options for about $29.

Of course that left Haydee wide open to some chitchat fortunately she skated right thru it. Now came time for Jose to introduce Cris Franco and what do you think was his first thought but the Yummie Tummie tank and soon everyone lost their self-control and once again laughter filled the room.

This is one heck of a “Generation-Mex” actor/writer/comedian. Cris’ uniqueness is in his ability to pick up on the delivery of any comment and that he did with the yummie tummie. Then goes on to say that today was a special day in California as millions prepare to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, giving us a 101 History lesson as to why crowds gather at the shrine, which of course he said is a basilica but had this miraculous event happened in 2009 it surely would have been a cathedral. The roars of laughter filled the room.

On screen or off, Cris is one of the most outrageous comedian and you’re guaranteed that he will always draw a crowd. He’s quick witted, entertaining and a barrel of fun. So don’t forget to catch him in January on CITV for Latino 101. To learn more about Cris go to CrisFranco.com and there you will find out just about everything you’ll ever want to know about Cris.

Whew! That was some show. If you didn’t get a chance to hear it LIVE go to our archived shows and play it back and while you’re there listen to our past shows as well.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
Saturday December 5th

Host, Jose Miranda, though shy a co-host goes on to delivery one incredible program as he bids a fond hello to all the listeners out there joining him for another lively and variety show which has proven to be full of engaging surprises.

Jose points out that Yo Soy Latino needs some help. Though much of the program is supported by the generosity of its advertisers and sponsors, however, given the financial market today YSL needs to reach out to the community as well. This is one intelligent and proactive program that should remain in the airwaves. It understands the culture and how people think, but mainly it represents you! So look deep into your hearts and send in your contributions of $5, $10, even $25 to:

WEUS / Yo Soy Latino
999 Douglas Avenue, Suite 3318
Altamonte Springs, Florida 32714

Let us know you care enough to keep this program going. Yo Soy Latino prides itself on quality shows — highlighting the positive accomplishments and talents of the men and women who have graced our airwaves and who they themselves faced countless challenges and struggles. These are the same individuals that now stand out as role models to us all.

This week was no exception as YSL was honored to have with them the lovely and talented Ms. Michele Ruiz. Michele is a five-time Emmy Award honoree and four-time Golden Mike recipient. While at KTLA, she won three of those Emmys and two Golden Mikes for her work on NBC4’s “Beating the Odds” series, and in 2002 was presented the LA Press Club Award for a series on autism. Serving 13 years on the Board of a non profit organization called “Para Ninos”. Today, she is the President and Co-founder of SaberHacer.com an integrated media company dedicated to the empowerment of Latinos by Latinos and for Latinos.

In addition to being recognized for her work in television, Michele has received two commendations for Outstanding Citizenship for Civic Contributions and Dedication to the Community by the City of Los Angeles. She was named Latina of the Year, Comision Femenil De Los Angeles. She also received the Certificate of Congressional Commendation from the U.S. House of Representatives; a Commendation Letter from the United States Senate; and, a Certificate of Recognition from the California State Senate.

It’s no wonder Jose had to take a deep breath after lauding Michele for all her many awards that he said, “Michele your accomplishments are just too many to list but I didn’t see where it said you did windows or cooked”. Suddenly, she burst out into a delightful laughter that caused a chain reaction in the studio as well. She replied, “Truthfully speaking that she didn’t get around to doing windows too much and rarely does she cook due to all the things she is currently involved with in SaberHacer.com”. Clearly understandable but, what an ingenious beginning to what will continue to be an entertaining session with this trail blazer entrepreneur!

One of the questions asked of Michele was, “As a minority woman in the world of men in television did she feel pressured at all?” Michele said, “She never felt under pressure in fact she felt that being a women minority actually helped out as the networks where under going minority awareness and needed a Latina”.

Then she mentioned that she had a co-worker who, later turned out to be a very good friend, on their first encounter would stare at her until she finally asked him what was wrong and he answered back saying he had never met a minority woman before, a startling insight. However, this was a part of the time and a learning experience for all involved.

What's more, Ms. Ruiz mentioned in the course of her conversation with Jose that her ideas of getting involved and making positive changes were stirred during her high school years. Although her career in journalism was the glue that made it all come together.

SaberHacer.com is the most expert-driven “how-to” company offering educational programs which are available to everyone. The topics covered can be as simple as understanding your telephone bill, to the importance of an annual mammogram, or even on how to write résumés and applying for positions, to talking to your doctor or your children about sex, and so much more. She wants to expand the Web site’s reach and content to include presentations in both languages, English and Spanish. Right now it is in English.

Whew! To hear more about this dynamo and SaberHacer.com listen to www.yosoylatino.us and check out today’s archived show. But, to learn more about SaberHacer.com or to contact Ms. Ruiz visit her Web site at www.SaberHacer.com. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
November 28, 2009
The Yo Soy Latino radio show is one show you can relax and take five as its hosts seem much more genuine and lively than any other talk show to entertain the airwaves.

Jose Miranda, with his smooth talking charismatic charm, seems to connect immediately with everyone, including the guests and callers. He begins the program in his usual manner addressing the national and local news — discussing the reports surrounding the Tiger Woods accident and the couple who deliberately crashed the President’s first state dinner but what remains unclear is how the Secret Service fell down on the job as these uninvited guests made their way into the state dinner.

Moving ahead, Jose goes on to cover cool trivia, cigars, and then directs his attention to Haydee who proceeds to reveal those cool gift ideas that can be a lot of fun putting together, so strap on your sleigh belt because you can still toboggan your way into the stores with some wonderful gift ideas for under $10. Keeping in mind that ten dollars isn’t what it use to be, but it’s in the presentation and how you put these items together that will create that perfect gift for whoever it is that you’re shopping for.

Jose then introduces our illustrious guest, Ms. Linda Nieves-Powell. On stage or off, she is one of the most charming and endearing and overall easy to talk to guest who definitely did not make this hour drab or uninspired. Given her accomplishments, Jose asked if as a child she produced shows for her family. Linda quickly responded with a no, explaining that she was very much a quiet child growing up. Although she does recall putting together a play in the backyard it was for school and it was the first time she ever ventured into something like that.

As she reached into her past, she remembers arranging a talent show, charging everyone 25 cents and singing “Ebony & Ivory”, which even then as a nine year old ‘race’ had played an important role in her life. The difference today is that she has a voice and is making good use of it as clearly noted in her handiwork — Jose Can Speak, YO SOY LATINA!, The New Soul Latina Show, Tina Does Perez, Amigos and Dreams, A Day with my Dead Husband Hector, Freestyle and the list goes on.

Linda’s very first play was stimulated after she had seen John Leguizamo in Mambo Mouth where he was noted for motoring off a stream of hilarious one-liners. That surreal experience validated the possibilities of presenting generations of Latino talent in a humorous light bringing their street smarts and distinct cultural experience to the stage.

Further, she stated that as Latinos we are now evolving — immigrants are marrying into different cultures which of course it’s affecting the younger generations as some speak Spanish while others do not and how we are have become so diversified. Even the progressive Latina has much history and variety so it is easier to celebrate all cultures. What an extraordinary interview! If you wish to reach out to Linda Nieves-Powell, Emmy Award-winning playwright extraordinaire, you can do so by going to www.latinaflavored.com.

Gifts Ideas for $10.00
November 28, 2009
Here are a few more gift ideas you might enjoy putting together which can help save money while perhaps even lifting your spirit for the season and it won’t leave you burning a hole in your wallet.

1. Select a few dish towels and dish cloths (or make a set) and sew on some trimming at the very bottom along the rim—a simple motif will do one that matches the décor of the individual you’re presenting the gift to. So if their kitchen is architectural make certain the pattern is slick to combine well. However, if it happens to be a country style design select a trimming that’s appropriate. And, the same can be done with bathroom towels.
2. A basket filled with kitchen gadgets. Great for those chefs that can never find what they’re looking for in the kitchen, especially if they share a kitchen.
3. Video rental gift certificates are another unique idea, just watch out for restrictions. It gives the bearer the opportunity to view a movie or movies of their choice when they prefer to stay at home for a relaxing even romantic evening.
4. Prepaid long distance phone cards. Great for teens because the average teen loves to chat and has much difficulty working within a confined budget so these cards do come in quite handy.
5. A journal. It’s a simple writing tool but it allows the adolescent to channel their thoughts or dreams into this chronicle/dairy, especially when you design a cover that fits their personality. On example might be, if they’re into sports create a cover with their favorite team and put a picture of them as the heart of the team.
6. 2010 Weekly Agenda Calendar. Ideal for those on the fast track and who NEVER find time to get one themselves. Plus, they’ll be able to manage their time more effectively.
7. Flashlight with batteries a must for every household and vehicle, especially if you live in Florida.
8. AAA batteries for digital cameras. A must! You could never have enough especially if you’re not into the rechargeable ones. No more scrounging around, you’ll always have a package at your disposal.
9. Makeup brush set. Ideal for the user because a good brush tends to wear down quickly but more important, it will be a welcome addition to their brush collection as well.
10. Expensive socks. Ladies for that special man in your life they are still under $10.

AND, for those of you who took advantage of ‘Black Friday’ this week, kudos! There were some fantastic deals out there but I hope you managed to pay with cash as oppose to using credit cards. Remember, a bargain is only as good when there are no additional payments to be made.

Next week we have another amazing interview as YSL welcomes Ms. Michele Ruiz, an Emmy Award-winning anchorwoman at KNBC-TV, who left her prestigious post to pursue another dream, announcing "As I look ahead, I need to make a change to accomplish my goals," and she did. Today she is the CEO and Co-Founder of SaberHacer.com, the most expert-driven “how-to” company created by Latinos for Latinos. So come back and join us. This is one show you don't want to miss.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
November 21, 2009
Today’s show was absolutely amazing and Jose appeared to be on top of his game. He begins with his usual monologue while injecting a little banter before presenting his first guest Ms. Eva Mendes who has been described as “she’s got a cool beauty and poise reminiscent of Sophia Loren, yet can banter with the best of them in the style of Katherine Hepburn while still being charming”.

YSL was able to catch up with Eva who after some warm pleasantries with Jose began the interview responding to Jose’s first question, “Since arriving to motion pictures you have played opposite many top headliners—extraordinary directors and co-stars. Tell me, what was it about this character FRANKIE DONNENFIELD in the BAD LIEUTIENANT: Port of Call New Orleans that attracted you most to this role?” Mendes replies, “Just what you said!” I believe it’s really important to work with people you admire and Werner Herzog is an incredible and prolific director and Nicolas Cage is an amazing actor unconventional in every way and I’ll like to do more and more films with him”.

But as the interview evolves Eva describes her character as being flawed. She’s a drug abuser and a prostitute and that for Ms. Mendes added a certain intrigue as to where did that wrong turn happen in her life which of course we can all relate to.

Jose goes on to ask, “What was it like to film in New Orleans, especially now?” You could hear it in her voice as she describes her day to day. There were moments that it was good and then others that weren’t, but you couldn’t help but admire the resilience of its people even though the devastation was deep.

After which Jose asked about her Calvin Klein ad campaign and the surrounding controversy. Eva answered, “she loved the ad felt it was tastefully done and it’s ok for everyone to have differences in opinion. We live in America and that’s how it should be.” The making of the ad for Eva was fun and empowering illustrating a strong woman who’s in control not a weak one. It merely was exhibited in a totally new and creative way.

Next Jose inquires about her bedding line, VIDA by Eva Mendes. What was her inspiration in creating her very own home décor line when so many have gone into clothing, fragrances, jewelry, even cosmetics? Eva expressed that she just wasn’t feeling it. She loved architecture and interior design which was her first love and that’s what motivated her to create VIDA. Ms. Mendes also shared that she will be expanding into dinnerware soon, make note of that as you heard it here first. Eva’s line is exclusive to Macy*s so feel free to check it out.

Also, she noted she had reached a point in time that she didn’t have to worry about money and was now in a position where she wanted to give back and help others and was looking into some kind of organization that she can contribute to like a woman shelter or something along that line to which Jose suggested YSL might be able to help her in that area.

Unfortunately time was limited so Jose thanked Eva for taking this moment to be with YSL. He appreciated her company and felt his audience enjoyed listening to her as well. For more on the Eva Mendes’ interview, please go to the achieved show so you don’t miss a thing!

Moving right along Jose announces Mr. Antonio Juan Fargas who’s most notably remembered for the unforgettable characters he created most famously in his role as the incorrigible and loveable 'Huggy Bear' in the 70s TV series of 'Starsky & Hutch'.

Jose asked what going on my brother you have so many brilliant credits from film some of which were 'Shaft', 'Car Wash', 'The Howling VI' and 'The Borrower', to Broadway and his countless roles in TV like ABC’s All My Children where he played the father of Angie Hubbard (Debbi Morgan) as well as other sitcoms. Where should I begin?

It was like watching an extended conversation between two old friends over dinner. The chemistry between Antonio, and Jose was not only engaging but lively. Then Jose asked, “Tell me Antonio for the kid that’s still living in the apartments in the Chelsea what would you tell him if he wishes to follow in your footsteps?”

Antonio replied, “If you want to follow in my footsteps you got to be prepared for the work and you have to love the alleged destination, be it stardom. Hopefully, it’s just to be alive and kicking it, while keeping the hammer in your hand because it’s yours for life. And remember there’s nothing wrong in staying home because you can still be a star. There were a lot of stars in my block and each was a role model, some went in one direction while other in another”.

Both Haydee and Raul got a chance to ask Antonio questions about writing specifically on manuscript submissions and Antonio responded I would be happy to review anyone’s work. However, I’m just one person so be patience as it will take time to get back to everyone.

The hour starting winding down so Jose bid Antonio a fond farewell but with an open invitation to return soon to discuss more about his production company, Granada Entertainment; a company which specializes in the writing and production of new film and television products. He’s currently working on a television series for British television. To reach out to Antonio go to Antoniofargas.com.

What an awesome show! If you didn’t get a chance to hear it LIVE you are urged to visit the archived shows section of the website and listen to today’s broadcast. This week guests interviews ROCK!!!

Highlights of Today’s Show...
November 14, 2009
Today’s show began with a lot of energy as Jose opens with his monologue then introduces co-host Haydee Ayala and begins with some national headlines which included talk about the possibility of lifting the U.S. embargo against the Castro regime. Though Cuba is not exporting arms or revolutionaries they are in fact exporting doctors. More than 51,000 Cuban doctors and health care professional are working around the world today, primarily in developing third world nations. This topic certainly stirred a fascinating dialogue between Jose, Haydee and Raul.

Jose then goes on to discuss trivia, top ten movies and new releases, stogie picks to today’s wine selections, which of course had everyone amused. Afterwards, turns his attention to Haydee who talks about creative holiday gift suggestions for $10.00. Because of the upcoming holidays there will be a weekly editorial in place of fashion which will be referred to as ‘Holiday Central — Your Wonderland to Savings’ so make sure to fill up your sleigh with some neat holiday gift ideas.

Jose turns to Mr. Jim West who is a coach mentor counselor communicator and therapist who deals with all kinds of behavioral issues especially those relating to adolescents and their anxieties. Jose begins by asserting we’re in a situation where we have high unemployment, parents are not working it’s affecting the family structure and we have a runaway issue, which according to the statistics indicate that children are running away at an alarming increase. So how do we reach these teenagers to help them get through this ordeal as even the adults are going through it themselves?

Jim responds, “Teenagers, well let me give you a little history of adolescents. Parents really dread having a teenager, mainly because of the conflict. Teenagers are biologically adults. And, when you have two adults already living in the home and that child becomes a teenager they too become an adult and now you have three adults in one home that’s where the conflict begins, add financial stress to it and it worsens”.

Then Jim goes on to say when one is at odds with a teen we usually recommend that parents take time to exercise or go for a drive, de-stress themselves, because when adrenalin is increased and emotions combine you can be deemed temporarily insane, and say and do things that ordinarily you wouldn’t; and, the likelihood of resolving conflict at that moment just doesn’t work which can leave a child traumatized for life. It’s about resolving conflict and when we as adults are not managing our stress well there is a period of temporary insanity. Jose then remarked well then, now I know, I’m surrounded by a bunch of crazy people! And, of course everyone chuckled.

Bouncing back Jose asked, “What is it that you do?” I’m a Masters level therapist licensed and a nationally certified counselor specializing in treating oppositional defiance mood disorders often with supplements in place of medication. That was interesting so if you find yourself at odds dealing with your teen, do reach out to Jim West. Remember teens may not always talk with family or friends but may feel more comfortable speaking to a counselor.

Some health care providers do provide for Mental Health Services. However, for uninsured individuals try: Lake Side Alternatives, they might be able to work with you and they may even have state funds available, also Seminole Behavior Hospital. And, if you suddenly lost your health insurance and need medication try asking your health care provider they might be able to help you. To learn more about the types of treatment or counseling available through Total Life Counseling go to www.totallifecounseling.com or call 407-248-0030.

Jose raps up things with Jim and introduces Dr. Dale Salatich a brilliant surgeon who dabbles in a little construction. However, today Dr. Satatich spoke on the health care dilemma from a surgeon’s perspective. He begins by saying he had his own ear, nose and throat practice and was trained to take care of medical problems for patients specifically in those areas as well as dealing with the surgical problems, the very serious health problems like cancer.

Though he had his own thriving practice for twenty years, he found over the years the day to day of delivering care of the patient got more and more complicated. It was no longer about treating the patient but dealing more with the business and legal aspects which progressively increased that you found yourself dealing more with the paperwork rather than the actual care of the patient.

Though he is still in the system and is a licensed practicing surgeon, when he saw the face of medicine changing he started his own construction company, Graham Construction Concepts. And, today he does both. You can reach Dr. Salatich at Mid-Florida Dermatology Asso. 407-299-7333 website www.fldermdoc.com or if you need any type of reconstruction (a remodeling of your kitchen) you can call him at 407-247-5424.

Today’s show dealt with two serious issues both dealing with health, the emotional struggles of a teenager and the behind the scene dealing of a surgeon. Wow, it certainly was insightful.

Holiday Central — Your Wonderland to Savings...
Gift Ideas for $10.00
November 14, 2009
One can be very ambitious when buying gifts for everyone then afterwards realize what a serious budget strain the holidays have left. Perhaps it’s because we can get caught up in the ‘commercial’ hype. I believe we need to return to a simpler time when gift giving was actually an act of love.

So in the next few weeks in lieu of fashion we’re going to present some gift giving ideas. Things you’ll need for your creative project: gift bags, tissue papers, cellophane wraps, ribbons, and shiny objects, all can be obtained at the dollar store. Here are a few suggests that won’t take a bite out of your wallet....

1. Plants are an easy idea for low budget holiday gifts. Small plants like poinsettias can be very pretty and decorative or choose a plant with a holiday motif like a small cedar tree plant add some ribbons and other decorations (like colorful miniature holiday balls) to make it look festive.
2. Candles make great gifts. You can find terrific bargains on votive candles in holiday colors of red, green and white or even scented candles add a glass holder or a hurricane candle holder wrap everything in cellophane paper with some trimming and transition what would have been a plain gift in to an artsy one.
3. Food can be an ideal holiday gift. Homemade baked goods like sugar cookies in pretty glass jars. Not only will you have fun making them but they are a lovely gesture that many people will appreciate more than a gift certificate and cost very little to make.
4. Books are ideal for the avid reader. Your selection can be as unique as your recipient and their tastes. If they enjoy romance or mysteries novels check Barnes & Nobles for sales.
5. Board Games make fantastic inexpensive holiday gifts and there are hundreds of different board games to choose from, i.e., Jinga or Twister both will certainly have everyone laughing or splitting their pants.
6. Gift baskets another great idea. For the movie lover, consider a bag full of popcorn or candy and a $5 gift card to blockbuster; or, for that sports enthusiast add a small foam football, basketball, baseball, soccer ball or hockey stick draw or paste the team’s logo on it then add a bottle of his favorite brew and whalla a simple yet unique gift.
7. As for the gardener, combine a trowel, gardening gloves and gardening book in a plastic flower pot. And, for that chef in the family give a basket filled with recipes (selected from the internet) add a spatula or another utensil, possibly include an apron or a chef's hat which can be pick up at a party store for another perfect gift basket.
8. Consider giving a simple holiday card and inside let your message read “Here’s an offer to baby sit!” Give the recipient a night out to go the movies. BUT, REMEMBER TO REDEEM IT!
9. Children's books are great because it allows you to connect with the child through your tone and inflection. The reader tells the story those words come to life creating the mood for the tale. So for those little tikes give them fun books they can savor something that reflects their personality.
10. Coffee mugs can be purchased at a discount or "dollar" store and filled with candy or nuts then wrap in a cellophane cover, tie a festive ribbon and there you have another thoughtful gift.
Stay tune next week for more gift giving ideas.

Next week the Yo Soy Latino Radio Show is proud to present the talented and gifted Ms. Eva Mendes and multi-talented Mr. Antonio Fargas, both outstanding actors. So come back and share that cup of coffee with Jose, Haydee and the YSL team.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
November 7, 2009
It’s no wonder the Yo Soy Latino Radio show is increasingly becoming the best talk radio in Florida. The studio was just a humming, the banter fun and exciting. What a great way to start your Saturday afternoon!

Jose begins with his customary greeting, followed by the national news, trivia, movies and new releases, stogie picks, then sprinkles an OOOO-lala oh that is so French to today’s wine selections. Afterwards, turns his attention to Haydee for some fashion suggestions.

After a brief intermission, Jose then gives a gracious warmhearted welcome to the one and only Dr. Letitia Wright who graciously agreed to return to the Yo Soy Latino show. Since Dr. Wright’s last visit her show The Wright Place™ TV Show, now in its 10th season, has developed into the fastest growing television show about business on the air.

What is more, Dr. Wright has co-authored, “The Power of Mentorship for Creating Wealth”, “The Power of Mentorship for the Woman Entrepreneur”, “Power of Mentorship for Passion and The Power of Mentorship to Create Wealth” in addition to being the producer of a new film, “The Power of Mentorship Movie”.

Though Letitia has garnered many awards and has ranked #33 on the 50 Most Influential Women in Social Media, it has not changed her optimistic and energetic spirit. She remains as charming and delightful as ever. As the interview continued Dr. Wright in reflection speaks lovingly of her maternal grandmother who was instrumental in cultivating her time-management talents at an early age, which today has proven to be invaluable and the driving force behind her determination to succeed.

As the hour moved forward, Jose presented Dr. Wright with yet another question, “What is Pomwe?” and she replied, “The Power of Mentorship for Women Entrepreneurs”! This was a focus on women creating a forum where they can gather and get information needed to start their own businesses, which later encouraged her book, “The Power of Mentorship for Women Entrepreneurs”.

Jose then presents Dr. Wright with a situation. A young girl in high school about 15-16 of age who’s just starting out and looking on to her college years has an idea and is looking to get a business off the ground. What would you recommend?

Dr. Wright explains that anybody young who’s starting to think about an idea and they just don’t have all the necessary resources available to them should first look at their idea. Does the idea have merit? Is there a market for it? Are they truly passionate about it? In other words, do they have the excitement to make it happen? It should be a thought that can be bought to fruition. Otherwise it remains a thought.

Then connect with someone who can mentor you but make sure this is something you’re going to enjoy and remain with. Also, know your perfect market, i.e., if it’s a woman who drives a Camaro and makes $45K then that’s your market. You’re still going to get both, men and women. But it’s important that you know your target audience so that you are not wasting precious time and dollars.

This show was electrifying! Update Your Fall Wardrobe with Accessories
November 7, 2009

Don't let the economy get you down. If you are on a limited budget like most of us, it doesn't mean you can't look fabulous. With these five basic accessories, you can update your wardrobe without spending a bundle.

Mixed Metals Necklace. No one says you have to wear diamonds and pearls to look good. This season a bold statement necklace can really update your whole look. Choose fashion jewelry, including bib necklaces, big pendants and chunky beads. Another terrific trend is mix metal jewelry. These chunky necklaces in mixed metals usually are under $100.

Skinny Belt. A belt can pull together your whole look. Get a skinny belt and wear it over everything from ruffled blouses to fitted blazers to slouchy sweaters. You can find faux patent belts for under $10 anywhere.

Snakeskin Handbag. Snakeskin is one of the hottest and dangerously stylish exotic skins blends of the season and this handbag can complement almost any outfit. You can carry a snakeskin bag with everything from a simple black dress to jeans and a sweater. Other colors like purple and yellow works surprisingly well as well especially with a lot of colors including black, grey, brown, navy, green and several other fall colors. No matter the choice pick a bag that works with the staples in your wardrobe.

Ankle Boots are versatile and fun. Of course, there are several varieties just pick the one that best accents your wardrobe. And don’t forget the Bakers Sandal. We live in Florida so you’ll still be able to wear these sexy and hot sandals in faux-leather through the season.

The Fedora is back this season and you don't have to spend a fortune to buy one. Look for a Fedora at your local thrift shop, where you can find great bargains on vintage clothes. Macy's also offers several fedoras that are really cute and cheap, including this version by Nine West for just $36.

Also, shop the sales. It may seem obvious, but if you want to save money on accessories, keep a look out for sales. In addition to flyers in your local newspaper, visit the websites of your favorite department stores and sign up for sales alerts by email. So you’ll be able to go from sporty to flashy easily because each accessory adds a hint of rebellion to the boldest styles.

Next week prepare yourself as Jose and Haydee and the YSL team return with yet another lively and entertaining broadcast. Their guests will be Jim West a popular and well sought after therapist and Dr. Dale Salatich a brilliant surgeon in the area of dermatology.

Join YSL as they chat with Mr. West about unique ways of connecting with our young adults; and, Dr. Salatich who has spent many years in the medical trenches, dealing with the glories and the disasters of our health care system. So come back next week and share that cup of coffee with Jose and the crew.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
October 31, 2009
YSL’s talk show host Jose Miranda begins with his welcoming monologue covering much of the national and local news, then goes to trivia, the top ten movies and new releases. After that he injects a little levity before proceeding to his favorite stogie picks, followed by today’s wine selections, and of course the recipe of the day, Stuffed Potato Balls (Papas Rellenas), which left the YSL team hungry for this mouth watering dish. If you wish to create this tasty side dish, it will be on the website.

Today’s show had an intriguing element to it as YSL uncovered the underlying issues relating to the Coalition of Immokalee Workers as they prepare to protest in front of Publix supermarkets Saturday and Sunday. Gerardo Reyes, a representative for the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) indicated that they are a group of tomato pickers and growers who work for a company in south Florida. And, for the past 30 years all the tomatoes produced in this state are paid by the bucket, for example a 32 pound bucket pays 40-45 cents which is the same compensation since 1979. That’s 30 years of stagnant wages!

Jose then asked if the majority of their membership is mostly Hispanics. To which Mr. Reyes replied, “Their association is mixed consisting largely of Latino, Haitian, and Mayan Indian immigrants who work laboriously in these low-wage jobs throughout various parts of Florida”.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers seeks to correct this unfair payment practice. They recently won a one-penny-per-pound from Taco Bell, McDonald's and Burger King, and a few others, but Publix declined. Their desire is to get Publix on board who is a major provider of fresh tomatoes to agree to this wage hike for these farm workers. This might not sound like much, but to these farm workers who endure daily discrimination and sometimes intolerable working conditions it can be the difference between poverty and a livable income.

So if you get a chance, all are welcome to join them as they rally in front of Publix. However, if you wish to find out more on the Coalition of Immokalee Workers or give your support go to www.ciw-online.org.

On the next segment, YSL’s listeners got a chance to listen to the sounds of little miss Eva Sabiniano, a 13 year old prodigy from Lynnwood WA whose singing talent belting out Christian music has delighted many with her enchanting melodies. Eva begins by sharing a little about herself and then goes on to speak about her ministry — Born to Praise. Eva has a vision. Her drive and determination with the loving support of her family has propelled this young artist to remain focus in achieving her desire to help needy children and other similar ministries through her music.

Eva will be the first Asian (Filipino) performer on BET, Dr. Bobby Jones Gospel Show, to air on Sunday January 17, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. on channel 56. Any one interested in supporting this young lady in her noble quest can do so by purchasing one or two of her CDs which are available in iTunes, cdbaby.com and Amazon.com. All proceeds benefit needy children and other ministries.

You can also contact Miss Eva Sabiniano, you can do so by going to the following websites: www.myspace.com/eddieandeva, info@evasborntopraiseministry.com, www.cdbaby.com/evasabiniano.

The Cocktail Dress
October 31, 2009
It is believed that the first cocktail dress made its appearance during the ‘Roaring Twenties’. The era of absolute corruption and self-indulgence, the age of bath tub gin, jazz, the model T, the $5 work day and the rise to a new woman — women who smoked, drank, voted and wanted to enjoy social gatherings, just like men.

But to do these things women had to be clever as not to wear chic evening gowns to these social gatherings because it would be a dead give away to the police who were quick to uncover banned soirées as drinking was prohibited (remember these were prohibition days). It was necessary to create special garments which were less formal than dinner clothing yet more adorned than day wear. Walla, the dawning of the cocktail dress!

The first cocktail dresses were similar to the loose cut of the flapper dress. Originally designed for the young, these dresses barely covered the knee, sound familiar. Many were heavily beaded or had fringes. The typical fabrics were silk or layered chiffon and often accessorized with tiny bags covered in sequins and rhinestones, set in a rather tiny frame, most often with a small chain handle.

However, it wasn’t until the 90s when people witnessed a revival of the cocktail dress which included the “little black dress” added in the early 30s as an essential part of a woman’s wardrobe and thus inspiring the typical cocktail dress color.

Today, designers are blending a bit of nostalgia with the present. You’re going to see much of the eighties extravagance to ballerina-inspired tutus. Those voluminous skirt that look amazing on the dance floor as it does on stage. To the two-tone separates double colors like black and white for those of you who just can't decide what color you want to wear for that upcoming bash. Now you can opt for a two-tone dress and show off the best of both worlds.

And as for the one-shouldered dress, that’s back and bigger than ever. One in particular I recommend can be easily found in Nordstrom.com. This elegant goddess-style dress in black matte jersey (stretchable ladies for easy comfort) will set off your hourglass figures or give you curves that you didn’t think you had to add just enough flash to compliment your perfect silhouette. Also, because it has a forgiving gathered skirt it’s ideal for hiding the tummy. Now that’s what I call a perk!

Even Macy*s has a dynamic fuchsia cocktail dress that’s absolutely divine. This dress says sexy all the way and for us Latinas that HIGH on our dress code. It is made of stretchable satin, has a deep low cut V and a form flattering fit plus it does come in black as well. There are plenty of other styles one can choose from like the gold sheath dress, the red cocktail dress, the black jacket cocktail dress, to the strapless cocktail dress, all are perfect selections and available at Nordstrom and Macy*s.

However, cocktail dressing is all about finding the “right” dress, one that has a singular quality about it and can take you to any party no matter the occasion. So whether you go young and flirty to glamour and sophisticated, start your holiday soirée with the dress that makes you feel the most beautiful!

Well that concludes our show for today. Come and join Jose and Haydee and the YSL team next week as they revisit with Dr. Leticia Wright whose television show “The Wright Place™ TV Show” is in its 10th season and is the fastest growing TV show about business on air. Dr. Letitia Wright ranks #33 on the 50 Most Influential Women in Social Media. So do come again and share that cup of coffee with us.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
October 24, 2009
What an incredible Saturday! When roars of laughter flood the studio, you definitely have something unique and entertaining and YSL is infectious about doing just that.

Jose begins by warmly greeting his listeners then introduces his co-host Haydee before going into the national and local news, cool trivia, followed by movies, stogie picks, and for the holidays a flan recipe to delight your palette, to the top wine selections for under $25. Next, he makes a special announcement about Border’s bookstore — informing our listeners of this one day event where they could find kid’s books at 50% off plus enjoy the Halloween spook-tacular and all taking place later this afternoon. Hope you took advantage of it!

Then it’s on to Fashion with Haydee where she fills Jose and our listeners in on several malfunctions made by hopeful candidates in search of jobs — from clothing, jewelry, to hair and nails. All of which greatly influence a perspective employer in how they view a candidate. Haydee reminds us to keep things fresh, simple, and fabulous because first impressions count especially on a job interview.

Following a brief intermission, Jose makes ready to introduces the one and only Keu Reyes — actor, writer, producer, director, filmmaker, stand-up comic, and a member of the party of no! To which Keu lightheartedly responds, “You don’t speak for me!” Keu even added to the Fashion saying, “No biker shorts, especially with a fanny pack and if overweight definitely avoid it altogether”.

Keu’s comic style is friendly and optimistic which infuses a contagious energy in the studio. His stand-up charm blossoms as the hour progressed, even after some lively bantering with our caller. He accredits much of his passage and style of life to having strong family ties.

Keu Reyes is far more than just a slapstick comedian. He’s bright, intelligent and it’s obvious that life for him is about a journey rather than the race. It certainly gave everyone a chance to sit back while participating in some side-splitting fun.

Before closing, Jose asks Keu, “Keu quickly tell me about the show and how can we contact you”. Keu tells us to go to CTV.com where you can get information on the show, Latino 101, and when it will air. However, if you wish to reach Keu go to his blog on www.artisticwarfare.com or email him at keu@artisticwarfare.com.

Yo Soy Latino is definitely one lively broadcast, often humorous and endlessly fascinating, so spread the word! Fashion Blunders on an Interview!
October 24, 2009
I speak on fashion all the time but when you are looking for work first impressions are critical, so I thought of doing a piece on the biggest faux pas one can make when looking for work. You should always make sure you’re well-groomed from your head to your toes. We tend to carry the ‘casual’ day wear into an interview and that can send the wrong message. So if you’re guilty of one of these malfunctions? It’s time for a change!

1. Going on an interview with sunglasses on top of your head or headphones around your neck, not a good thing. Tuck it away in your briefcase or just leave it in your car before entering the lobby.

2. Carrying a backpack or fanny pack instead of a briefcase or portfolio. If you do not own one borrow one it will keep your resume and references neat and safe. And for women, do leave the purses. Just take what you need for the interview.

3. Micro-mini skirts. Though I love the trend, your skirt should cover your thighs especially when you are seated. If you’re tugging at it to keep it from rising, rethink your choice.

4. The wrong tie. Ties should be made of silk, no less than 3 ¾ inches wide with a conservative pattern. The best colors are red or burgundy with a white long-sleeved shirt, no short-sleeved shirts unless you’re wearing a jacket.

5. Overly bright or large-patterned clothing. Unless you are applying for a job in the creative fields like advertising, marketing, or fashion buying it's best to stick with the basics (navy, black or gray, brown is also acceptable). The interviewer does not wish to be distracted by your clothes but what you bring to the table, your talents.

6. Heavy makeup. Keep your makeup simple you’re not going on a date but an interview.

7. Earrings on men. Avoid them. Wearing any jewelry unless it is a wedding ring, class ring or metal watch will raise a ‘red’ flag. Just as with women wearing more than one set of earrings.

8. Facial piercing or any tongue jewelry should be removed when going on an interview. Even tattoos should not be visible.

9. Don’t wear oversized clothing on an interview, it sends a negative message make sure you’re clothes are well fitted and tailored to your silhouette.

10. Fingernails. Nails should look clean and be trimmed to a length that doesn't leave the interviewer wondering how you keep from stabbing yourself or anyone else for that matter. Same applies to unnatural hair colors or styles, keep it within the natural hues.

11. Wearing strong aftershaves, perfumes or colognes. Fragrances for most can be outright offensive. Many people are allergic especially to certain scents. Consider a delicate fragrance or use soft-scented quality bath soap.

12. Sneakers. Avoid wearing them altogether and use the proper footwear.

Remember, you want the interviewer to be listening to what you're saying and not critiquing what you're wearing so don’t make these fashion blunders when on a job interview. Good luck in your job search!

Next week prepare yourself as Jose and Haydee and the YSL team return when they look into the blistering dispute between the CIW, Coalition of Immokalee Workers, and Publix as they wrangle over the one-penny-per-pound wage hike for workers to the unforgettable impressive sounds of Ms. Eva Sabiniano, a rising 13 year old Christian artist whose voice will have you saying “I wish I could sing like that!” So come back next week and share that cup of coffee with us.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
October 17, 2009
YSL promised to deliver a program full of mischief, mayhem and laughter and so they did! Today’s show definitely had all those nuts and bolts added to it!

Jose begins with his opening monologue greeting his listeners in his memorable style, followed by the national news, trivia, top ten movies and new releases, stogie picks, to today’s wine selections. Afterwards, turns his attention to Haydee who just happened to go the Bob Carr Theatre the night before for the presentation of Cinderella choreographed by Peter Stark and performed by the Orlando Ballet.

Haydee begins by sharing her views of the recital. Saying it was delightful, entertaining and lively from beginning to end. She states that the show had plenty of elements from comedy to drama throughout the entire performance. However, not wanting to reveal the details encourages everyone to see the presentation themselves. The Orlando Ballet is an exceptional dance company and YSL will definitely be highlighting future performances.

Following a brief intermission, Jose turns to Haydee who discusses Fashion after which Jose points out a quote he remembers reading as a child. Its author was the late President John F. Kennedy which mimics in certain ways the challenges faced by our current President. Stating our President stands in a new frontier dealing with challenges some new others pre-existing but nonetheless he’s come a long way given his brief tenure. Jose further discusses the health care reform and the harsh criticism of the President. It’s apparent we need a health care change however with all the escalating confusion and misinformation coming from both sides it’s not going to be an easy task. At least, one can say the President is committed in his endeavor to bring health care under control during his administration.

Jose continues and presents the rest of the YSL team, Raoul and Ron before discussing the two republican senators who are proposing to add a straightforward question on the 2010 census that would ask people, “Are you illegal?” This question certainly raised a brow or two at the studio which of course lead to Jose’s remark, “Are you nuts!” Jose did make a salient point here because the likelihood of getting a true response or any for that matter to that question would be nil.

Jose introduces Mr. Keu Reyes who’s standing in for Cris Franco. Mr. Franco had an emergency and could not join us today. However, Keu was a great stand-in. He’s the creative producer of a new show called Latino 101 which will air on CRTV beginning in November of 2009. This TV show explores Latinos through a series of interviews with musicians, politicians, comedians with a focus on our foods, and so much more. Keu goes on to explain that Latinos is a culture, not a race.

YSL's first caller wanted to discuss the issues concerning the question that some senators wanted to put into the 2010 census. Jose immediately asks the caller, how she would respond to the question, “Are you here illegally”? She said she would check the box with all the above. Our next caller dials in offering his take on the current plight of our economy, asserting it’s because of the Hi-spanics, as corrected by Keu, that we are all in this mess. Jose quickly reminds us that it’s ok to agree to disagree.

YSL was also honored with the presence of Dale Reynolds who had just completed a week of performances in Sacramento, performing his one man show portraying Thomas Jefferson. Dale enlightens us by explaining that at one point or another we were all illegal. Everyone including the Native Americans came here from somewhere else. Mr. Reynolds, who is a gringo learned to speak Spanish partly because he resides in LA and because he learned the language as he frequently traveled to and from Mexico on vacation with his parents. There where so many memorable exchanges and comments made but one of singular note made by Mr. Reynolds was, “To learn another’s language is to learn another’s culture and to learn another’s culture is to be a world citizen.”

What a show! If you didn’t get a chance to hear it LIVE go to our archived shows and listen but do share your comments.

The Vogue Report...
Short, Sexy and Strong
October 17, 2009

One thing designers agreed upon this season are big strong bold shoulders. And we’re talking 80s proportions in some situations—embellishments, strong bold and powerful dressing. So brace your self ladies for the shoulder pads are back and it doesn’t look like they are going away any time soon.

The one good thing that’s unforgettable about this particular look is that it is designed to accentuate one’s appearance by enhancing a woman’s figure creating a smooth line over the collar bone area while giving that tailored slim look to your waistline. So you will see lots and lots of big shoulders silhouette the garments we wear. However, let’s not forget that bare shoulders are still going to be very, very hot! Designers want women to feel powerful and strong yet sexy and they are NOT shirking from opulence.

What you’ll be seeing in numbers though is short, sexy, and strong clothing! Particularly leather! Leather remains to be an especially HOT item! You’re going to see women wearing lots of leather this season — gloves, thigh high boots, jackets, very short shirts, vests, pants! And, if pulled together properly can be quite appealing.

Another trend is the Rock n Roll vibe — studs, grommets and spikes in jackets and jeans all returning back to the authentic rock n roll, think details that are subtle but striking. And, for evening wear — sparkle and shine —introductions of copper, gun metal and sequence dresses and gowns.

Here’s a quick overview:

80's influence:
In New York, it was all about the neon color and glitz-over-glamour an 80’s attitude; however, with the European influence, its not so much the colors, but the silhouettes, ruffled and gathered satins, the shoulder – the waist – and the feminine, but still over the top, power suits.

Brights and neon colors:
Lots of reds, oranges, greens, cobalt blue and yellow, and of course your classic black. Remember there's a shade for everyone.

Super shoulders:
Not just strong shoulders, but ‘super’ shoulders, remember Alexis or Krystle Carrington as they grace the scenes of Dynasty and those 30s stars like Joan Crawford who popularized the look when they sported shoulder pads!

Sleek tailored silhouettes:
Belts that emphasized the waist, volume that's controlled via pleats, darts or tucks and skinny pants are all part of a bigger trend which creates a smooth sleek tailored silhouette.

Black and white prints and patterns:
Black tends to make up the majority of any working woman's wardrobe, and designers have given the world plenty of options for fall 2009. So chose wisely as there are plenty of graphic patterns and pretty prints to compliment any fall wardrobe.

Fashion will always be about making a statement so make one that’s your own!

Today’s show sizzled, from our guests to our callers. Next week prepare yourself to listen to more of the same as Jose, Haydee and the YSL team return with another lively and sure to be entertaining program. Our returning guest will be Keu Reyes who’s agreed to rejoin us next week on the YSL radio hour. So come back next week and share that cup of coffee with us.
