Movie Review:
Glee: The 3D Concert Movie — Rating: 4 STARS
If you love Glee (the series) then you’ll be psyched because this film is entertaining, engaging and captures America’s moments of Glee.

The cast remain in character, even Rachel (Lea Michele) chokes up on hearing that Barbra Streisand is in the audience to the flamboyant Kurt played by Chris Colfer. Then there’s the ditzy Brittany who re-enacts Britney Spears routine of “I’m a Slave 4 U” complete with the barely-there costume and sexy dance moves to Riley’s rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way.”

There are several moments that stand out specifically Lea Michele’s performance of “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from “Funny Girl”, undoubtedly a song she was born to sing. Clearly, they are all multitalented and dedicated young performers who continue to pull off difficult feats while making it effortless and, more important, fun!

Puerto Rico Pushes Home Buying
(Wall Street Journal) — A stimulus program on the island, long ripe with vacant houses and condos, has sent sales of new homes surging 80% and sales of existing homes up 24% in the past 10 months from a year earlier, even as the market in much of the U.S. mainland is dead.

Rick Perry’s Texas Jobs Boom: The Whole Story
New York (CNN Money) — Texas has created a lot of jobs over the 10 years that Rick Perry’s been governor — there’s no doubt about it. Perry, who is formally launching his presidential candidacy on Saturday, is making his state’s economic prowess a centerpiece of his campaign. Texas leads the nation in minimum-wage jobs, and many positions don't offer health benefits. Also, steep budget cuts are expected to result in the loss of more than 100,000 jobs.

Email Rendezvous Entangles State Rep. Phillip Hinkle
(Indianapolis Star) — Republican lawmaker calls encounter set up with young man on Craigslist a ‘shakedown.’ Emails shared with The Indianapolis Star suggest that state Rep. Phillip Hinkle — responding to a local posting on Craigslist — offered a young man $80 plus tip to spend time with him Saturday night at the JW Marriott hotel. And, Hinkle’s defense attorney (Peter Nugent) was unable to say what Hinkle meant by a “shakedown.” When asked if he knew about the emails and the Craigslist posting, Nugent said, “Oh, I’ve seen some emails, but not all of them.” He would not be more specific.

President Obama huddles with CEOs
New York (CNN Money) — President Obama met with a group of CEOs at the White House on Friday amid fresh concerns about a global economic slowdown and a potential double-dip recession in the United States. Among the topics up for discussion: the economy and jobs. It’s not the first time the president has met with business leaders in Washington. In December, he met with 20 prominent CEOs, and again in January that coincided with a visit from Chinese President Hu Jintao. Since then the president has added Bill Daley as his chief of staff, a nod to critics who thought the administration hostile to business interests.

Wall Street Bounces Back
New York (CNN Money) — Rebound! Stock markets continued their schizophrenic week Thursday as all three indexes surged on positive earnings and labor market news. Dow jumped 423 points, or 3.9%, to close at 11,143.

Pelosi Picks Three
Washington (CNN) — House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday appointed Representatives James Clyburn, Xavier Becerra and Chris Van Hollen to the special congressional committee on deficit reduction, completing selection of the 12-member bipartisan panel created under last week’s debt ceiling agreement. The three choices bring strong party voices from the House to the new "super committee" charged with crafting a plan to reduce the country's mounting deficits. They join three Senate Democrats — Patty Murray, Max Baucus and John Kerry — previously appointed to the committee, as well as six GOP fiscal conservatives from the House and Senate named by Republican leaders.

Republicans Name Spending Hawks to Deficit ‘Super Committee’
(Washington Times) — Republican leaders Wednesday tapped six lawmakers with strong spending-cuts credentials to represent the party on the deficit super committee tasked with recommending $1.5 trillion in tax increases or spending cuts, sending a signal that the committee will focus heavily on trimming government. The Republican picks in both the House and the Senate. Boehner is sending Reps. Jeb Hensarling (R., Texas), Dave Camp (R., Mich.) and Fred Upton (R., Mich.). Mitch McConnell is sending Sens. Pat Toomey (R., Pa.), Jon Kyl (R., Ariz.), and Rob Portman (R., Ohio).

Asian Stocks trim earlier losses by close of Business
(BBC News) — Asian shares closed steadier after earlier falls prompted by continuing worries about the scale of European debt. Stocks pulled back from initial losses, with Japan's Nikkei 225 index pulling back from an opening fall of 1.8% to close 0.63% lower. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 1% — again after an earlier, larger fall. The recovery helped European markets to a higher start with gains of between 2-3%.

Wisconsin Recall Election Results: Democrats Win Two Seats, Fall Short of Taking over Senate
Washington (Huff Post Politics) — Democrats won two Wisconsin state Senate seats in Tuesday’s dramatic recall elections, but they fell short of the three needed to take the majority away from Republicans. Six incumbent GOP state senators were forced to defend their seats Tuesday making this a historic recall election. This came after Republicans passed Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walter’s (R) controversial measure stripping public employees of their collective bargaining rights. After the election results came in, Walker put out a statement saying that it was “clear the voters also want us to work together to grow jobs and improve our state.”

Most Americans can’t afford a $1,000 Emergency Expense
New York (CNN Money) — A majority, or 54%, of Americans don’t have enough cash on hand to handle a $1,000 emergency expense, according to a survey by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, or NFCC, released on Wednesday. So when the unexpected strikes, most Americans aren’t prepared to pay for it. "It's alarming," said Gail Cunningham, a spokeswoman for the Washington, DC-based non-profit. "For consumers who live paycheck to paycheck — having spent tomorrow's money — an unplanned expense can truly put them in financial distress," she noted.

Federal Reserve to Keep Interest Rates Unchanged
Washington (Washington Post) — The Federal Reserve pledged to keep its target for interest rates very low through at least mid-2013 following a policy meeting Tuesday, in an effort to support a faltering U.S. economy.

Today’s Highlights...
Ronald Blocker, Superintendent of OCPS
By Haydee Ayala
August 13, 2011
Orlando, FL —YSL host Jose Miranda, after his monologue and several smooth, soft versions of well-known songs, leads his listeners to some of the craziest comments made by two GOP hopefuls. Hearing those outlandish remarks fused by Miranda’s laughter-inducing surreal comedic style made those comments funny instead of being seen as ill-advised and outright dangerous annotations.

Shortly thereafter Miranda centers on this weeks’ breaking news specifically the statement made by Mitt Romney at the Iowa State Fair —“Corporations are people, my friend” — a one-liner destined for Democratic attack ads should he become the Republican nominee.

However, the last time we checked corporations are not people. They are a collection of many individuals united into one body and a legal entity created under the laws of a state. Despite not being people, corporations are recognized by the law to have rights and responsibilities like natural persons and, more often, survive longer than the lives of any member. Furthermore they exist in perpetuity, a stream of cash payments that continues forever, BIG difference!

Of course, the hour would not be complete without our call-ins. One of which is a regular who enjoys advocating her views in spite of some inaccuracies. This brief exchange was not between Miranda, it was directed at YSL co-host. The conversation did spark some controversy but it made for some sizzling differences in opinion.

Haydee like Jose will openly espouse political views that challenge the status quo in the Republican Party, particularly when politicians put businesses first before the needs of its citizens; with a belief that cutting programs is in the best interest of its society; while they chisel away at your rights. If that is correct, then there is something satirically wrong. Amid the lies, deceit, and continued hype or propaganda, this Republican Party has been on the wrong side of every issue of concern when it relates to ordinary Americans. The danger is when one votes party for the sake of voting party and don’t obey the dictates of their own conscience.

With minutes remaining before the first commercial break, Miranda steps it up to talk about this week’s movie pick. Since Haydee goes weekly, her choice was “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” After Miranda covered the top 10 box office hits, he then turns the mic over to Ayala for a quick review of the film before wrapping things up.

After the short break, Miranda brings on Jason Henry, reporter for the West Orlando’s News. Jason covered many issues, particularly an article which posted on the Orlando Sentinel regarding an alleged truce between the City of Orlando and the anti-poverty group, Food Not Bombs. But, according to Henry their attorney said, “There is no truce; and, the group will continue their work to feeding homeless in Orlando’s park.”

Then he spoke about the redistricting meetings involving both the Latino and Black communities.
Anyone interested in attending a meeting, can go to the Orlando city website for a complete listing of dates and times. Also, with regard to the new election law, that is now on hold! Perhaps, — and this is our thinking — it's because many voters are saying it is an attempt by Republicans to hold down Democratic turnout. If you would like more information on this amazing roving reporter, go to West Orlando News Online.

And now for the moment you have been waiting for this week’s special guest, Mr. Ronald Blocker. After a few clever comments and lighthearted banter between Miranda and Blocker, Jose proceeds to ask what’s happening with the 2011-2012 school year. Straight away Mr. Blocker alerted our audience that school will start August 22, kicking off with registrations, meet the teacher events and more. However, he did express that all children must be registered, as there have been many changes this year. He urged our listeners to call your neighborhood schools and get that confirmed. The school you think your child will be attending may not be the one.

Jose starts by saying with the nation’s public school system being ripped apart by budget cuts how have the budget cuts affected the schools, teachers, the ESO program, and more important, our children? Mr. Blocker begins by saying, “Orange County has been blessed so our community will not suffer as much.

“Two years ago we knew that this would happen and we would need to scale back so strategies were put in place to buffer us. Having received three successive A’s, we went to the voters who had enough confidence in us and asked that they let us keep what we have which will allow us to operate for another 4 years. The $11-12 million gap, that’s manageable.” But, there’s a mini-cliff coming! We have been operating on a Federal job bill ($35 million for Orange County) which keeps administration from laying-off 2% of its teachers. The problem is that it will run out in 2011 and unless our Florida legislators make up the difference then layoffs will begin.”

What about training for the teachers, asked Miranda. Blocker responded, “We have this program called "One Vision, One Voice." The primary thrust is making certain teachers are effective. This program emphasizes a framework of teaching and learning that promotes district-wide accountability, continuity of instruction and academic rigor for all employees through the district.

Miranda returns with, “And programs like ESO will they be discontinued?” Mr. Blocker, said, “The ESO program is very important. When a parent brings their child into a Kindergarten class, they want their child to graduate and walk across the stage, many of those children are Latino. Before it was ok to get a job with a HS diploma but the job factors in our days requires a college education to which he added I see this more as a social economic group rather than an ethnic group.

In closing Mr. Blocker left our listeners with the following thoughts: 1. Schools are reaching out to you through various orientations; 2. Take advantage of the sales tax breaks there’s a very narrow window get those clothing and supplies so your child will have a positive start; and, 3. Make a Commitment. We need every parent to make a commitment this year to be more involved in their children. You can reach Mr. Blocker by calling the school at 407-317-3233 or online at www.ocps.net.

Until next time when the country (and naturally those politicians right here in your own front yard) walks down the path it has designated you can bet YSL will be on top of it because it’s “Radio the way it ought to be!”

Have Medium to Long Hair — Here are Easy Tips to Great Hair Every Day
August 13, 2011
Long tresses have always been a favorite of mine. Mainly because it’s easy and one’s first impulse is to pony up, but as a society your hairstyle plays a huge part in someone's first impression of you.

In just five minutes you can have a look that is really fabulous, even if you are press for time. Focus on perfecting the hair that surrounds your face. Though the ponytail is a laid-back look, it can limit your imagination. Perhaps now would be a good time to consider other options. Here are some simple styles that can save you time; can easily go from day to night; and, can even last through a sweat session.

When you are looking for a relaxed weekend style, try an easy, breezy twist-back. This will keep Saturdays and Sundays fuss-free. Plus, the look is versatile enough to wear to just about everything – from walking the dog to a dinner date.

Also, on the second day your hair will have more hold. That would be a good time to do the twist. No, not the dance! Take a two-inch section from one side of your part, twirl it back and secure it with a bobby pin. Repeat on the other side, crossing the pins into an ‘X’. Smooth it out. Apply shine serum, like Smooth Frizz-Free Serum, to tame any frizzy, flyaway strains while adding a little sheen to your hair.

If you are heading for the gym, take a cue from ballerinas. The chic super high topknot is one of the best 'dos’ to wear during high-intensity sweaty workouts. Use a flat brush, gather hair on the top of your head then secure it with an elastic band. The higher it is, the less likely it is to bounce or tug while exercising. Lock it down by braiding the tail. Create a topknot by twisting the braid around the base of the pony. Fasten it into place with a few bobby pins.

Now, and this is important, go light. Skip the gel or hair spray. The alcohol content in some products can sting your eyes as you are working out. When done, and this is only if you’ve washed your hair prior to exercising, let your hair down and blow-dry any sweaty strands. Going shampoo free is easier on your hair’s health. Scrunch a dab of leave-in conditioner, like Fast Fixx Style Prep, through ends to smooth out any frizz.

When you are ready to go out, braid the pony and secure the end with an elastic band. Starting at the top of the braid, use your thumbs to push your hair apart. This will give your do a softer texture and transform tresses. Wrap the braid around the base of the ponytail and pin it into a bun. Then spray all over with a flexible-hold hair spray.

Matt Barnes Punches Player
Minnesota (ESPN NBA) — Apparently Minnesota Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley wasn’t the only NBA player who lost his cool in a summer game Thursday night. Beasley pushed a heckling fan in the face during a street ball game against Kevin Durant’s team in New York, but on the other side of the country, Los Angeles Lakers forward Matt Barnes’ victim was another player. Barnes reportedly punched an opponent during a San Francisco Pro-Am game Thursday, according to San Francisco’s KGO TV. His explanation, “He elbowed me and pushed me, so he got one,” Barnes told ESP.com college basketball writer Diamond Leung.

Recipe...
Minty Lime Baked Alaska
August 13, 2011
Instead of making a butter cake, create this recipe with nonfat angel food cake.

Servings: 4 • Time: 3 HRS (Active 20 MIN)

Ingredients:
6 ounces angel food cake, sliced 1 inch thick
1 pint lime sorbet, softened
1 tablespoon finely chopped mint
1 tablespoon light rum
½ teaspoon finely grated lime zest
4 large egg whites, at room temperature
½ cup superfine sugar

Directions:
Line the bottoms of four 3/4-cup ramekins with angel food cake; cut the cake as necessary to cover the bottoms evenly. Patch any empty spots.

Spoon the sorbet into a chilled bowl. Stir in the mint, rum and lime zest. Scoop the sorbet into the ramekins and smooth the surfaces. Freeze until firm, 1 1/2 hours.

In a large bowl, using a handheld electric mixer beat the egg whites at medium speed until stiff peaks form. Gradually beat in the sugar then increase the speed to high and beat until the whites are glossy. Run a knife around the rims of the ramekins and turn the sorbet cakes out onto a work surface. Using a spatula, transfer them to a baking sheet, cake side down, at least 4 inches apart. Spread a generous amount of the meringue all over the sorbet cakes. Freeze the cakes until firm, 1 hour.

Preheat the broiler and position a rack 6 inches from the heat. Broil the baked Alaska(s) for about 2 minutes, shifting the pan constantly for even browning. Carefully transfer to plates and serve.

Belly-Fat Buster — Cutting Carbs
August 13, 2011
Which should you cut back on first if you want to trim belly fat — carbs or fat?

You might think that dietary fat goes straight to your middle, but research suggests that too many empty carbs is really the first thing to do your belly in.

Dueling Diets
In a study, healthy overweight men and women went on two consecutive 8-week diet interventions. The first diet period was focused on weight maintenance and the social aimed for weight reduction but cutting calories. Through each phase, the participants followed either a reduced-fat or a reduced-carbohydrate diet. When all was said and done, both groups lost weight. But it turned out that the group on the reduced-carb diet — which, incidentally, also focused on quality, low-glycemic-index carbs — lost 11 percent more deep belly fat compared with the group on the low fat diet. Plus, the low-carb group lost fatter mass overall.

Bye-Bye Belly, Hello Health
Shrinking the amount of belly fat you have is always a good idea for your health, because too much visceral — or intra-abdominal — fat increases your risk of diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. But it's not always clear how to target that pesky problem area. In addition to cutting out empty carbs like white rice, white bread, and white pasta consider these strategies as well: eat, walk and relax.

Gov Scott getting low-cost Health Insurance from State
August 13, 2011
Tallahassee (Miami Herald) — Gov. Rick Scott, a critic of the federal health care overhaul, is paying less than $400 a year for health insurance for himself and his wife.

While Scott is accepting no salary for his job as governor, the multimillionaire and former hospital chain executive chose to enroll in the taxpayer-subsidized health insurance plan offered by the state of Florida.

Scott is among nearly 32,000 people in state government who pay relatively low health insurance premiums. It's a perk that is available to high-ranking state officials, including those in top management at all state agencies. Nearly all 160 state legislators are also enrolled in the program that costs just $8.34 a month for individual coverage and $30 a month for family coverage.

Brian Burgess, a spokesman for Scott, confirmed the governor and his wife are enrolled in the state health insurance plan, but refused to discuss why Scott signed up. He called the governor's health care coverage "private matters."

The health insurance coverage provided to Scott used to be free for top state officials until 2010. Rank-and-file state workers pay $50 a month for individual coverage and $180 a month for family coverage. Married couples working in state government also pay the same amount as Scott and legislators.

Florida has one of the highest uninsured rates in the nation, according to data released last year by the U.S. Census. Scott and other Republicans have been very critical of the health care overhaul signed by President Barack Obama that is intended to increase the number of Americans with access to health insurance. Before he ran for governor, Scott ran a group called Conservatives for Patients' Rights that ran television ads criticizing the health care overhaul.

Florida is one of more than 20 states suing to have the health care overhaul declared unconstitutional. In the last few months Republicans in Florida have rejected millions in federal aid that is tied to the health care overhaul.

Sen. Nan Rich, D-Weston, says that Scott is "entitled" to enroll in the state health insurance plan. But she said he shouldn't be fighting to keep other Floridians from getting access to health insurance coverage.

"I wish every Floridian had the same opportunity," Rich said.

Rich is one of 40 state senators who are enrolled in the state health insurance plan. A spokeswoman for the Florida House confirmed that 112 out of 120 House members are also covered by the state. Many state legislators have acknowledged that they enrolled in the state plan because it is cheaper than obtaining coverage elsewhere.

The state is projected to spend $2 billion during its current budget year to provide health insurance coverage. Most of the money spent on state worker health insurance coverage comes from taxpayers and not employee premiums.

The governor earlier this year asked lawmakers to approve an overhaul of the state's health insurance program that would force all employees to pay the same premium amount and to cap the amount of health insurance coverage provided to state workers. But the plan was not adopted by the Republican-controlled Legislature.
