Movie Review
Colombiana — Rating: 3 STARS
Zoë Sandana exudes sexiness throughout this film. More important, she makes being an action hero look effortless — from swimming with sharks in a sexy swimsuit to carry out a hit from inside the jailhouse in a cat suit. This film has a lot of in your face action with scandalous blends of sex, skin and violence.

The movie is centered on the making of a lady assassin as a young girl who escapes from the drug lords who killed her father then travels to America to seek out her uncle who instructs her in the art of becoming a killer. Even the young Cataleya (played by Amandla Stenberg) does an outstanding job in her debut role as the younger version of Zoë for just being 10.

Overall, there’s plenty of action, nudity, sex and violence. There were two movies that came to mind for me and that was Lara Croft and La Femme Nikita. What I found lacking here though is that it didn’t show much of an inner life for the character.

Hurricane Irene – What Can We Expect
(CNN) — Hurricane Irene neared coastal North Carolina late Friday and had metropolitan New York in its sights, staying on an unusual track that could bring deadly storm surge, heavy rainfall and misery to millions. New York airports are closing Saturday to incoming flights. All weekend shows on Broadway have been canceled as well as the New York subway system. Biggest dangers are storm surge, and rainfall.

Perry gets Big Bounce, but Race is Still Anyone’s Game
(CNN) — Polls show Texas Gov. Rick Perry leading potential GOP presidential candidates. He became the front-runner not long after jumping into the already crowded field. Now he’s in the position of fending off attacks in the months before voting begins. Other candidates getting into race would do little to diminish Perry’s lead, polling shows. He could even be a thorn in Mitt Romney’s side.

Pediatrician ordered to Spend Life in Prison for Molesting Patients
(CNN) — Delaware pediatrician was accused of sexually assaulting 103 of his patients. A judge orders Earl Bradley to spend the rest of his life behind bars. Bradley whose practice was in Lewes was given the maximum sentence of 14 life terms, plus 164 years in prison without the possibility of paraole. Authorities testified against during a bench trail in June.

Islamic militants among Prisoners Freed from Libyan Jail
Tripoli, Libya (CNN) — “This is potentially a very dangerous development,” a former Libyan jihadist tells CNN. Moammar Gadhafi’s regime imprisoned thousands of suspected pro-al Qaeda militants after the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. The former jihadist says the prisoners embrace a puritanical interpretation of Islam. Neighboring Algeria, which waged a long battle against Islamist insurgents in the 1990s, has already expressed concern about the instability in Libya being exploited by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and other jihadist groups. Algerian officials are also concerned that weapons such as ground-to-air missiles may have fallen into militant hands, a worry that has also been expressed by U.S. commanders.

Quake a Wake-up Call for Eastern U.S.
Mayaguez, Puerto Rico (CNN) — The East Coast of the United States was shaken up by a moderate earthquake on Tuesday that was felt from Maine to Florida, Virginia to Illinois. On TV we saw people run out of buildings, thinking it might be a terrorist attack. Since earthquakes are infrequent in this region, most people don't know earthquake preparedness measures. Instead of running out of buildings, they should have dropped, covered and held on. Earthquakes are natural phenomena that become disasters when we don't prepare adequately — or are not educated in proper measures.

Today’s Highlights
Will The Real America stand Up...
August 27, 2011
By Jose Miranda
It’s ironic isn’t it the Earthquakes, reports of starving children, increase in welfare rolls, racial indifference, allowing the payroll tax breaks to expire, Republicans seeking austerity in the face of possible catastrophes. We the people how much are we concerned with all the things we have decided not to think about and is this the new Republican America they want us to embrace? Austerity anyone! This week’s guest Anthony Suarez, Attorney, Activist, Talk show host.

Every week Yo soy Latino tries to tackle the issues at hand to try and shed a little light on what most Americans seem to be apparently stuck in the lights about or what some might say is a mourners outlook were things are just totally confusing in somewhat disarray and were you’re not even looking at the future.

We live in a present in which we have 16% unemployment if you’re a minority. In a present were most major corporations’ are shedding job despite the fact that the numbers are showing these same entities are making monies up the ying-yang.

America has two unpaid wars going, a continued Tax cut for the rich also not paid for and an assumption by Republican’s that these Tax’s should continue as a way to provide more jobs. Now we might be in mourning but does that also make America stupid at the same time?

Now why continue to follow these things instead of more local issues such as mayhem, murder, well, actually Yo Soy Latino does but shouldn’t you also want to know about a Women’s right to choose, New voting laws, Cuts in Education, Police, Fireman, The new Unemployment rules, How about Pension issues, Unions anyone? How about allowing Tax cuts for the middle income and poor to expire so the wealthy can allegedly continue helping us out and that’s only the beginning.

In the face of one the worst hurricanes to hit the east coast of the United States in decades Yo Soy Latino’s Host Jose Miranda welcomes Anthony Suarez, Attorney, activist, talk show host on WONQ 1030am Daily 5 to 6pm in Orlando, Florida and a Republican.

After some light hearted banter between the two friends Jose immediately asked about hurricane Irene, the worst as noted in decades and about Presidential Candidate Ron Paul and Minority leader for the Republicans Eric Cantor accretions that FEMA wasn’t needed and that any monies used to help Americans during this time of need had to be offset by tax cuts. Jose, also asked what happen to common sense here? Suarez stated: the federal government lacked common sense and was all over the place and that actually Paul & Cantor were correct in their statements.
He went on to say basically everyone is afraid to say No to anyone but the fact is that if you don’t have the money then you can’t help.Miranda, asked: what happen to humanity what about caring for your fellow man? Suarez said that’s the answer that’s why you’re next store neighbor, your family, brother, should be the one helping and not the government.

Suarez, who states he is a Jeffersonian conservative, believes that the government has caused an expectation of expected relief. Want to hear more on the show and this spirited conversation go to our archives on www.yosoylatino.us

Hot Fringe Cuts for Winter 2011-12
August 27, 2011
When looking for a Winter hairstyle start with cuts that are all about angles, edges, and feminine. From pretty pixies to sassy spikes, glam, polished, chic and of course the layered look for sliced, subtle, tapered and choppy haircuts. All of which give women the option of having face framing or flippy looks to flared and wispy. This season the hottest new hairstyle trends will include:

The slanted bob, the fringe is the focus and when styling you can have a dramatic look with long and short layers that hang to the side. Another suggestion is to have a slightly uneven part in the center of your crown to divide hair into two sections leaving one side longer than the other. This simple but stylish classic slanted bob is what will allow you to create a trendy look for the winter.

Then there’s the wild bold hair. With this look there are no rules, the hair color can be shocking as well as the cut of the hair from striking streaks to spikes and messy uneven hair pieces that are in a V shape or cut into disconnected layers of thick and thin tresses. For eye catching styling color on a cropped bob, of full bangs or longer high gloss strong vibrant edges from wispy, soft layers to ruffled punk gel directed hair to clean modern geometric cuts.

Texture from waves, flips and curls add flair to short hairstyles no matter if your curls are full corkscrew wide waves or spiraled ends. You can have a soft feminine tossed look for many head turning beach waves, retro waves or coils to flirty crowns that leave your hair longer on the top and tapered near the nape of the neck and ears.

Mid-length locks allow for a bold statement since big hair is what is in right now of full bodied curls for volume, for straight face framing layers to a classic chic chin length blunt cut my favorite would be the asymmetric design because of its strong jagged layers and heavy bangs create a shape of drama and fashion style.

And, let’s not forget the fringe bangs. These bangs will sharpen up any short cut and add shine to a pin straight finish which you can wear your fringe over one eye with a slight part on the opposite side or comb to smooth out the hair with a flat iron for a sleek look. Bangs can be cut in various exciting new ways from ultra full, angled, curvy or cropped.

So whatever your hair type from thin and fine, to curly and thick to straight and medium you can achieve a sexy look with rounded bangs or lash length tresses.

The Sweetener Your Pancreas Hates
August 27, 2011
Make your pancreas happy. Say no to presweetened beverages that contain fructose. Fructose is found in abundance in sweetened sodas, teas, and fruit cocktails. And it give your pancreas the chills, because a recent lab study found that fructose may help pancreatic cancer cells grow and divide.

Fuel for Cancer
In the study, researchers bathed human pancreatic cancer cells in both fructose and glucose. And it seems the fructose worked at least as well as glucose to spur the proliferation of cancer cells quickly. Not only that, but fructose triggered the expression of a certain enzyme that made both sugar sources more readily available to the cancer cells. Other research has suggested that dietary fructose may also boost the actual risk of developing pancreatic cancer in addition to feeding it once it's developed. One study found that people with pancreatic cancer had 2.5 times more fructose in their blood than people without it.

Extra Pancreas Protection
Unfortunately, while pancreatic cancer may be rare, it's pretty deadly because it's often not discovered until advanced stages. So a healthy, cancer-preventive lifestyle is key to avoiding this killer. Consider unsweetened teas and plain water your body's best beverage friends, along with whole, unprocessed foods. This green bumpy vegetable may help protect against pancreatic cancer too.

Gov. Rick Scott: Let’s compete for $100 million Race to Top Grant for Young Kids
August 27, 2011
Florida (Orlando Sentinel) — Florida plans to compete for $100 million in the federal government's latest Race to the Top program, assuming the Florida Legislature is willing to accept other federal money it had previously rejected. HOWEVER, to apply for the Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge, which is designed to improve the care and education of young children, states must be taking part in a federal home-visiting program meant to prevent child abuse.
The Florida Legislature had rejected that home-visiting grant money because it is now part of President Barack Obama's health-care overhaul law, which the state's Republican leaders view as unconstitutional and are challenging in court. Lawmakers turned down, gave back or refused to apply for more than $50 million in federal grants tied to the law.

Scott, however, has decided to ask them to reconsider the home-visiting grant, said spokesman Amy Graham. "We do plan to apply for the Race to the Top Grant," Graham said in an email. "We are hopeful that the Legislature will grant the spending authority" for the home-visiting grant. The governor must sign the Race to the Top application, which is due in Washington, D.C., by Oct. 19.

Because the home-visiting grant, which Florida had accepted previously, was "not for implementation of Obamacare," Scott was never opposed to it, Graham said, referring to the Affordable Care Act.

In fact, she added, Scott asked for the budget authority to get the grant money during the legislative session this spring, and lawmakers denied that. Scott wants the Legislative Budget Commission to consider the new request for the home-visiting grant at its next meeting Sept. 7, Graham said.

"We're presently evaluating the budget amendment submitted by the Governor's Office, but we have not received any notification from the Governor's Office of a formal intent to apply for this new phase of the Race to the Top grant," said Erin Rock, a spokesman for the Florida House of Representatives.

A spokesman for Senate President Mike Haridopolos could not be reached for comment. Early-childhood advocates would be delighted if Florida applied for the new Race to the Top competition. They see it as a way for Florida to boost existing programs, better train early-childhood teachers and coordinate the often-fractured systems that work with babies and young children.

The grant "gives Florida unprecedented possibilities for investing in an infrastructure that can produce a generation that is happier, healthier and smarter than any that came before. We are thrilled to have this opportunity!" said Mimi Graham, director of Florida State University's Center for Prevention and Early Intervention Policy, in an email.

Graham said investing in early-childhood programs is sound fiscal policy, "critical to Florida's future workforce" and much needed in a state where "ranking in child health and well-being remains dismal."

Florida won $700 million in the first Race to the Top competition, a federal effort to push states to reform public education.
The new competition focuses on young children before they start formal schooling, with a particular emphasis on "promoting school readiness for children with high needs."

The U.S. Department of Education plans to announce winners in December. It has $500 million to divvy up and has said awards will range from $50 million to $100 million, depending on state population and plans. Florida is eligible for the largest award.
Thirty-six other states and the District of Columbia had said previously that they planned to compete for the money.

"These funds would allow Florida to further improve the quality of school readiness programs, the state's Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program, the Head Start program and school-aged (or after school) programs," said Scott's office in an email. "While it makes sense for Florida to join all of the other eligible states in taking advantage of these funds, it is important that everyone understands these are not recurring funds and should not be relied on to create new government programs/positions.
