Highlights of Today’s Show...
October 31, 2009
YSL’s talk show host Jose Miranda begins with his welcoming monologue covering much of the national and local news, then goes to trivia, the top ten movies and new releases. After that he injects a little levity before proceeding to his favorite stogie picks, followed by today’s wine selections, and of course the recipe of the day, Stuffed Potato Balls (Papas Rellenas), which left the YSL team hungry for this mouth watering dish. If you wish to create this tasty side dish, it will be on the website.

Today’s show had an intriguing element to it as YSL uncovered the underlying issues relating to the Coalition of Immokalee Workers as they prepare to protest in front of Publix supermarkets Saturday and Sunday. Gerardo Reyes, a representative for the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) indicated that they are a group of tomato pickers and growers who work for a company in south Florida. And, for the past 30 years all the tomatoes produced in this state are paid by the bucket, for example a 32 pound bucket pays 40-45 cents which is the same compensation since 1979. That’s 30 years of stagnant wages!

Jose then asked if the majority of their membership is mostly Hispanics. To which Mr. Reyes replied, “Their association is mixed consisting largely of Latino, Haitian, and Mayan Indian immigrants who work laboriously in these low-wage jobs throughout various parts of Florida”.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers seeks to correct this unfair payment practice. They recently won a one-penny-per-pound from Taco Bell, McDonald's and Burger King, and a few others, but Publix declined. Their desire is to get Publix on board who is a major provider of fresh tomatoes to agree to this wage hike for these farm workers. This might not sound like much, but to these farm workers who endure daily discrimination and sometimes intolerable working conditions it can be the difference between poverty and a livable income.

So if you get a chance, all are welcome to join them as they rally in front of Publix. However, if you wish to find out more on the Coalition of Immokalee Workers or give your support go to www.ciw-online.org.

On the next segment, YSL’s listeners got a chance to listen to the sounds of little miss Eva Sabiniano, a 13 year old prodigy from Lynnwood WA whose singing talent belting out Christian music has delighted many with her enchanting melodies. Eva begins by sharing a little about herself and then goes on to speak about her ministry — Born to Praise. Eva has a vision. Her drive and determination with the loving support of her family has propelled this young artist to remain focus in achieving her desire to help needy children and other similar ministries through her music.

Eva will be the first Asian (Filipino) performer on BET, Dr. Bobby Jones Gospel Show, to air on Sunday January 17, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. on channel 56. Any one interested in supporting this young lady in her noble quest can do so by purchasing one or two of her CDs which are available in iTunes, cdbaby.com and Amazon.com. The Vogue Report...
The Cocktail Dress
October 31, 2009
It is believed that the first cocktail dress made its appearance during the ‘Roaring Twenties’. The era of absolute corruption and self-indulgence, the age of bath tub gin, jazz, the model T, the $5 work day and the rise to a new woman — women who smoked, drank, voted and wanted to enjoy social gatherings, just like men.

But to do these things women had to be clever as not to wear chic evening gowns to these social gatherings because it would be a dead give away to the police who were quick to uncover banned soirées as drinking was prohibited (remember these were prohibition days). It was necessary to create special garments which were less formal than dinner clothing yet more adorned than day wear. Walla, the dawning of the cocktail dress!

The first cocktail dresses were similar to the loose cut of the flapper dress. Originally designed for the young, these dresses barely covered the knee, sound familiar. Many were heavily beaded or had fringes. The typical fabrics were silk or layered chiffon and often accessorized with tiny bags covered in sequins and rhinestones, set in a rather tiny frame, most often with a small chain handle.

However, it wasn’t until the 90s when people witnessed a revival of the cocktail dress which included the “little black dress” added in the early 30s as an essential part of a woman’s wardrobe and thus inspiring the typical cocktail dress color.

Today, designers are blending a bit of nostalgia with the present. You’re going to see much of the eighties extravagance to ballerina-inspired tutus. Those voluminous skirt that look amazing on the dance floor as it does on stage. To the two-tone separates double colors like black and white for those of you who just can't decide what color you want to wear for that upcoming bash. Now you can opt for a two-tone dress and show off the best of both worlds.

And as for the one-shouldered dress, that’s back and bigger than ever. One in particular I recommend can be easily found in Nordstrom.com. This elegant goddess-style dress in black matte jersey (stretchable ladies for easy comfort) will set off your hourglass figures or give you curves that you didn’t think you had to add just enough flash to compliment your perfect silhouette. Also, because it has a forgiving gathered skirt it’s ideal for hiding the tummy. Now that’s what I call a perk!

Even Macy*s has a dynamic fuchsia cocktail dress that’s absolutely divine. This dress says sexy all the way and for us Latinas that HIGH on our dress code. It is made of stretchable satin, has a deep low cut V and a form flattering fit plus it does come in black as well. There are plenty of other styles one can choose from like the gold sheath dress, the red cocktail dress, the black jacket cocktail dress, to the strapless cocktail dress, all are perfect selections and available at Nordstrom and Macy*s.

However, cocktail dressing is all about finding the “right” dress, one that has a singular quality about it and can take you to any party no matter the occasion. So whether you go young and flirty to glamour and sophisticated, start your holiday soirée with the dress that makes you feel the most beautiful!

Well that concludes our show for today. Come and join Jose and Haydee and the YSL team next week as they revisit with Dr. Leticia Wright whose television show “The Wright Place™ TV Show” is in its 10th season and is the fastest growing TV show about business on air. Dr. Letitia Wright ranks #33 on the 50 Most Influential Women in Social Media. So do come again and share that cup of coffee with us.
