Highlights of Today’s Show...
December 26, 2009
What a year it has been! Each week Jose encourages listeners to be a part of the YSL radio show with a smile, saying kind words and bringing the best talents to our listening audience, reaffirming that a little hard work and determination certainly does pay off.

Today Jose opens with a warm hearted upbeat monologue before going into some of the captions of the show like cool trivia, movies, recipe, wines, etc. Then spends some time chatting with co-host Haydee before covering more of the news then proceeds to announce YSL’s guest interview, Ms. ALICE WANG — an education dynamo who is a summa cum laude graduate in English, Economics, and a Liberal Arts honors program from the Harvard Law School. In addition, Ms. Wang served as law clerk to Judge Judith Rogers of the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit and is now working as a supervising attorney in the appellate division of the DC Public Defender Service.

While she has a pretty demanding career in criminal law and immigration rights advocacy, she managed to organize a group of young professionals to volunteer their time and energy in the launching of "The Esparanza Education Fund" which offers high school seniors who are immigrants a chance at college scholarships in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

There are of course several steps in the application process and the criteria can be daunting however when done these students are given scholarships ranging from $5,000 for a 2-year college or $10,000 for a 4-year university. The progression however does not stop there. In addition, there is a mentoring program in place designed to assist students in clarifying expectations, help them in addressing academic problems and give them advice about college and about their futures.

Since its inception this year the Esperanza Fund has received over 300 applications and raised over $50,000 through private contributions. Quite an accomplishment for a newly established organization, that is exceptional.

Alice spoke of three candidates in particular whose stories were unique and each one had mitigating situations. She reminded us that this country was built on revival. At the moment, the program is only available to high school seniors. Perhaps that will change has they continue to redefine their plans. For more information, go to www.esperanzafund.org.

That’s a lot, and it was just the highlights! If you didn’t get a chance to hear the broadcast LIVE go to our archived shows and play it back and while you’re there listen to our past shows as well.

In looking ahead to 2010, YSL will continue to cover the tough topics, asking the questions you want answered about the region we live in, the community we work in, as well as highlighting the many differences and likeness of the cultures — the journeys, the struggles and the successes of individuals who by example inspire, move us further in understanding the growing trend of this budding culture.

Hair & Beauty....
Hot Holiday Makeup Tips
December 26, 2009

Here are a few of the hottest hints.

HAIR
Add Frizz-Ease by John Frieda prior to blowing out and styling your hair or any other product that’s encapsulated with silicone. This will give you hair the glow and shine that will complete your holiday look.

LIPS
Go for the 24-karat-gold lips. Wearing golden makeup can give you that sultry come-hither look especially in low lighting so give your mouth a flirty finish, layer on translucent gold lipstick. If you want to give it a bit more color adds your regular lipstick first then the translucent gold lipstick which will give it that added dimension.

SCENT & SENSUALITY
Spray on a dark, musky, warm scent. This type of aroma is irresistible. Spritz from the backs of your knees up since heat rises which diffuses the scent or use a cotton ball like I do then spritz the fragrance on to it and apply (this process is great and allows you to target just those specific areas).

Swathe yourself in sensuality by surrounding yourself in silk, satin, and velvet to make your body equally soft and to eradicate all traces of dryness. Slather on an extreme body cream formulated with ingredients that keep you hydrated around the clock. (Try St. Ives 24 Hour Moisture Advanced Therapy Lotion or Vaseline Sheer Infusion with Stratys 3.

EYES & SKIN
Nothing garners attention like smoky eyes. To create the look, begin with four (4) colors. These colors should compliment your own eye color and skin tone. Don’t limit yourself as you can pick from an array of colors not just the blacks or grey tones. Personally, I prefer the blacks and grays.

1. Apply a cream concealer over your eyelid to create a smooth base for your eye shadow.
2. Use a pencil liner (black or gray looks best) to trace your top lash line from the inner corner to the outer. Then, use the same pencil to dot between your lower lashes. Smudge both lash lines with a cotton swab or an eyeliner brush.
3. Sweep powder shadow (brown, gray, eggplant (purple) even a dark green all work with black or gray liner) over your lid and into your crease, blending the color up and outward (Cover Girl Perfect Blend Pencil in Basic Black and Lush-Lash Mascara in Black). ACCENT YOUR EYES WITH a METALLIC SHADOW.

TIP: To prevent color from fading and give your lids a more shimmery finish, pat a cream shadow over the concealer on your lid first, wait five minutes, then top with a matching powder shadow.

4. Dust a lighter, neutral eye shadow (such as ivory) over just your brow bone.
5. Finish with two coats of black mascara.

For your skin add a bit of sheen to your skin on your cheeks, lips and down your nose. But don’t stop there! You can light up your body too by smoothing on a shimmer lotion like Delux Beauty Liquid Bronze bronzing lotion for face and body.

NAILS
Get light hues, nude or even Red tones for your nails for a bit of old-fashioned elegance. Don’t forget your toes as this completes the look.

Now slip into your holiday dress and celebrate.....
Happy New Year
2010!
