Interview with Maegan "La Mamita Mala" Ortiz

5.16.09
Welcome back to another episode of the Yo Soy Latino show with Jose Miranda as he opens with “second chance is always the best”!

This week’s show definitely had spunk, exuberance, and charm as Jose introduces the vivacious incredible Ms. Maegan “la mamita mala” Ortiz. Born in Queens New York she attributes the beginnings of her activist’s activities to her mentor the late Richie Perez. Who inspired her at the young age of 16 to foster a passion of politics, an awareness of her culture, and a consciousness of the struggles of Latinos which incidentally gave birth to her nick name “mamita mala”.

Her sentiment continued to build up to the voice that is today by the inspiring women in her life who encouraged her to have a say in what’s going on in the world, coupled by her involvement with a young radical group known as the Young Lords, to an awareness of police violence, racial violence and the long time struggles of young people who need to get involve and address issues that affect them now. Being outspoken naturally became a way of life.

Maegan is a remarkable Latina! She is a woman who’s not afraid to speak her mind regardless of the controversy. She illustrates this in her poetry and in her writing. As a single mother of 2 daughters she encourages her daughters to be all they can be. She is co-owner of 2 Mujeres Media which publishes the popular daily Latino blog VivirLatino. She's a powerhouse and it was our pleasure to have her as our guest on the show and we hope she comes back soon.

To find out more about Maegan and her work check out her blogs at: www.VivirLatino.com and www.mamitamala.com.

Before closing, we ask that you remember a young 14 year old girl who has reached out to the Yo Soy Latino family for help. She is in dire need of bone marrow transplant, Bridget Ayala Torres. She is in Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami fighting for her life. Bridget needs a compatible bone marrow donor and funds to make that fight for her life. For more information contact her aunt, Lynette at (407) 538-1336 cell or (321) 558-1869 home.

Well that concludes our show for today. If you would like to listen to the broadcast live, and we strongly encourage it, please go directly to www.yosoylatino.us to the archived shows and click on to today’s program. Stay tune next week to Yo Soy Latino as we bring you Dr. Ana Nogales for another exciting program.
