The Karate Kid...
Review Summary
31/2 stars
This version of "The Karate Kid" does still rely on the heart and storyline of the original. However one of the main differences is that it’s the first time the city of Detroit has been played on-screen by parts of Beijing which I thought a bright idea as well as an inspiration. Though the movie does still push the same buttons as the first take there are slight variations. This adaptation sends the mother (played by Taraji Henson) and her young son to China because jobs were limited (virtually none) in Detroit. Also, instead of a teenager you see a young boy, Dre (played by Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith who’s been acting since 6 and definitely holds his own).

Dre struggles in this new environment mainly because he misses his home, his friends and he’s plagued by the neighborhood bully. Though there are some similarities it does take a different spin—in the original was all about karate. In this film the boy embraces kung fu, which is taught to him by Mr. Han (played by Charlie Chan). It’s my understanding that the producers kept the title as the original movie in respect for Noriyuki “Pat” Morita. In any event, if you enjoyed the original “Karate Kid” or have an appreciation for the original classic then this will surely delight you.

YSL Unveils Scribbler’s Corner
By: Anthony Gaenzle

ORLANDO, Fla. — Saturday’s show unveiled the inaugural installment of Yo Soy Latino’s newest segment, Scribbler’s Corner. A new feature that will be exclusively enacted one weekend each month, celebrated local poet and author of Red Wax Rose, Darlyn Finch along with YSL’s host Jose Miranda will be bringing the program to you. Ms. Finch will be in the studio to offer advice to aspiring writers and welcome a guest author from the Central Florida community.

YSL’s first Corner guest was Mary Ann de Stefano, author and editor. De Stefano is the creator of Mad about Words, a website that offers editorial services and workshops that help writers learn how to improve their craft.

The site also features a free social networking section, the “Mad about Words Lounge”, where local talent can come together to pursue commons interests and gather feedback from one another. “It’s a good place to connect to the creative community,” said de Stefano, “You can post work there or just interact with other writers.”

The lounge currently boasts over 200 members, giving writers the opportunity to experience numerous viewpoints and to benefit from the variety of advice available on the site.

Finch said, “What I really love about the Mad about Words Lounge is that there are all ages of writers,” referring to the various levels of expertise of the site’s members. She cited that visitors to the site range from “newbies” just starting out, to established writers with multiple works published. The site is free and provides an easy way to perfect your art and meet other writers with the same goals and aspirations.

Fashion...
Stylish and Comfortable Jeans for Less Than $50
June 19, 2010
Here are the more obvious brands that we tend to be drawn to Hollister, American Eagle and Gap, which all carry popular blue jeans but most of their inventory are well over $50.

When you’re looking for a great pair of jeans with that perfect fit think outside the box and expand your ideas about jeans. More important, reflect on a jean that fits just right. For example, Old Navy Jeans are a good choice outside of Levi’s — these jeans actually fit long legged gals as well as the petite gals. Though many stores carry a wide selection of jeans you may not find what you’re looking for. If you’re like most they are not long enough, or are too baggy along the hips, or they’ll fit well in the hips and thighs but are either too baggy in the knees or too short overall.

Women's body types range so greatly that it is often difficult to find that perfect pair. You now exactly what I mean, the pair that fits like a glove, time and time again, and especially after several washes — if you’ve ever tried on jeans after several washings you’ll know exactly what I mean. Old Navy not to give any one particular brand a plug is one chain of store that truly does specialize in reasonably priced, yet stylish wardrobe pieces, many of which can be worn year round and fit well.

In addition, Old Navy offers jeans for the whole family — girls, boys, men, women, and even babies. These jeans are durable and long lasting. And, parents are you sitting down, most of them tend to outlast their usefulness because the kids out grow them, not the other way around. These jeans can be purchased for around $20 or if you are one frugal shopper wait for a sale and pay significantly less. Men's jeans on the other hand go for under $50 come in loose fit, flannel lined, painter, boot cut, straight, and low rise with prices ranging from $29.50 to $34.50.

Though Levi’s has are a few selected pairs of jeans that cost from $80 to around $100 they do have denims that are reliability and comfortable, especially for men. However, women should not overlook the forward looking fashion trends of Levi and Levi Strauss.

The Levi's 501 jean comes in all colors from dark to stone washed and sale for about $46.00, online. Price will vary by store but generally you can purchase Levi's online and on sale for $37.50. Women's Levi's are priced higher, at $79.50, however, the 501 Levi boyfriend cuts start at $49.90. Men and women's Levi's for under $50 can always be found at Kohl’s Department Store; and, guess what they won’t break your bank.
