Movie Review:
X-Men: First Class — rating: 3.5 STARS
This prequel features a cast of rising new talents rather than established stars, which is quite refreshing. And, in comparison to the X-Men trilogy, it could be a milestone for Twentieth Century Fox because it recounts the formative years of when they first met, their early alliances, to the inevitable fall out and the taking of opposite approaches in their dealings with ordinary humans who were fearful of their super powers.

In essence, X-Men: First Class pulls everything together! This movie is clever, cohesive and packed with action, humor, some retro 60s styles. In addition, it has a little history centered on the Cuban missile crisis. Overall, it is enjoyable and time well spent!

Woman who say Cop broke her teeth to Sue
Orlando, FL (Orlando Sentinel) — UPDATE: Lisa Wareham, the woman whose front teeth were broken in a confrontation with an officer (Officer Livio Beccaccio) in February will be suing the Orlando Police Department for “unwarranted and unlawful aggravated battery”, her attorney officially confirmed Wednesday. The notice addressed to Orlando’s police chief and mayor and the state’s Department of Financial Services was sent to the agencies Wednesday, Zelman said. Meanwhile, Orlando police spokeswoman Lt. Barbara Jones said it would be “inappropriate” to comment on pending litigation. The agency is reviewing the incident.

‘Personhood’ bills threaten Legality of Birth Control by Theresa Erickson, Esq.
(theafa.typepad.com) — “Personhood” bills are on the rise and are threatening both women’s reproductive rights and access to IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) in all 50 states; however, the two states where they are currently building a great deal of support are Iowa (HF 153) and Oklahoma (HB 1571). These bills are clearly intended to limit IVF treatment, certain forms (if not almost all) of birth control, as well as protecting all life “from the moment of conception”, while removing any and all judicial oversight and interpretation. For Iowa and Oklahoma, be aware that these bills are a clear attempt to provide all rights and protections currently only provided to those functioning outside of a woman’s uterus to a fertilized egg in a Petri dish or in a woman’s fallopian tube. In short, a woman who does become pregnant would not only lose her right to any medical privacy, she will essentially lose any decision-making authority over her own health.

As Arizona wildfire rages, Residents face Tough Choices
Eager (CNN) — While firefighters battled a massive, fast-moving blaze (known as Wallow Fire) which began sweeping through the Apache National Forest late last month and sweeping through eastern Arizona, local residents in its path faced serious choices: whether to stay and what to take with them if they leave. The fire has burned about 389,000 acres. And though authorities have evacuated thousands their concern is that it could continue to spread.

Community Activist Dies in Accident on W. Pensacola Street
Tallahassee (WCTV) — Community Activist Edwina Stephens dies in a fatal accident on W. Pensacola Street who earlier that day was working in her yard. The details of the accident have not been released only that the driver and passenger were taken to TMH. Stephens who loved the Southside loved being a voice for the community and was perceived by many to be a giant in her community. Ms. Stephens was also a member of her church for more than 50 years. Our heartfelt condolenses go to the family.

GM CEO Calls for $1 Gas Tax Hike
New York (CNNMoney) — General Motors CEO Dan Akerson said his company and his industry would be helped, not hurt, if consumers paid higher gas taxes. He also said that a higher gas tax, including an immediate 50-cent-a-gallon increase to take advantage of recent declines in gas prices, would probably make some of his Republican friends “puke.” But he said it would do more to help the environment than the pending fuel economy rules.

Bernanke: Job Market ‘Far from Normal’
New York (CNNMoney) — The economy lost some momentum recently Ben Bernanke acknowledged Tuesday, but the Federal Reserve chairman is still optimistic that the recovery will pick up again in the second half of the year. Bernanke also called on lawmakers to address the national deficit with a long-term outlook, but cautioned Congress against making any drastic cuts that could derail the economic recovery. Sharp cuts could be “self-defeating” he said, if they were to “undercut the still-fragile recovery.” In closing he also said, that should his inflation predictions be wrong, the Fed “would respond as necessary.”

Rep. Anthony Weiner admits to posting lewd picture
New York (Politico) – In a tearful press conference on Monday, Rep. Anthony Weiner admitted that he posted a lewd picture of himself on Twitter, and said he was “deeply ashamed” and that “I have made terrible mistakes. … and I’m deeply sorry.” He said he’d sent numerous inappropriate pictures to women he met online over the past few years, but never had a physical relationship with any of them. Should he resign? Will contingents forgive him? That remains to be seen!

4-Year-Old Girl Takes NYC Art World by Storm!
New York (NBC) — Australian artist, Aelita Andre is making a spash in the NYC art scene and she’s only four years old. Last weekend at the Agora Gallery in Chelsea, Aelita made her solo exhibition selling paintings for a whopping $27,000. What makes this child unique is her range of colors and her ability to display an added whimsicalness to her art now that’s charming. When asked when her passion began she said she was just three. However, her parents recall that at nine months she crawled onto the canvas and simply took to it letting her hands move around it. Her paintings are known internationally and can fetch thousands of dollars. If you happened to be in NYC go to the Agora Gallery for “The Prodigy of Color” exhibit which will continue until the end of June.

Bacterial Outbreak in Germany Shows Signs of Slowing
Berlin (AP) — Mysterious strain of E. coli in Europe is still rising more than a month after being detected. But authorities believe it could be slowing. This strain resulted in at least 18 deaths and 1,733 people getting sick. Though nearly 200 new cases of E. coli infection were reported in Germany in the first two days of June, The Robert Koch Institute, the German institution responsible for disease control, said new infections peaked on May 21 and 22 and have been dropping since then. Suspicion had fallen on raw tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce as the sources of the germ, but researchers now have not been able to pinpoint the food responsible.

Today’s Highlights...
Guest Appearances by Todd Allen and Jason Henry
by Haydee Ayala
June 11, 2011
Orlando, FL — Amid his booming voice dashing good looks and natural charisma, YSL host Jose Miranda will command attention. As soon as the clock strikes 12:00 pm and its Saturday afternoon listeners gather to hear his opening catchphrase, ‘Good Morning Orlando!' That is of course before this unforgettable host leaps into the weeks’ breaking news; and, talks about a comment from a young lady who wrote YSL saying, “Why do you call your show Yo Soy Latino when you never speak on Hispanic stuff, all I hear is politics?”

Miranda goes on to explain that Hispanics for the most part do not know what’s going on around them; and, when confronted with issues that directly affect them suddenly there are raised eyebrows. Of course, there was more but we will leave that for your listening pleasure as time lends itself to the breaking news of the week.

Starting with Rep. Anthony Weiner, who’s been getting quite a bit of negative publicity lately; a follow up on Lisa Wareham, the woman whose front teeth were broken in an altercation with Officer Livio Beccaccio, is suing the Police Department for unwarranted and unlawful aggravated battery. Followed by a special health announcement taking place today — ‘A Health Festival for the Whole Family’ — right here in the Central Florida Fairgrounds from 10:00-3:00.

And, more importantly, a bill that is being signed in some states and is being considered in most of the 50 states which directly concerns women, the “Personhood” bill — a law specially directed toward women and their unborn fetus. This law if implement has very damaging effects as it will control your pregnancy from start to finish relinquishing your rights to any medical privacy and decision-making over your own health. Of course there were other issues raised relating to the status of Puerto Rico and whether or not Puerto Rico should receive Federal monies.

Miranda then changes things up a bit by introducing his first guest, Mr. Todd Allen. A young attorney from Conrad Wilkomm in Naples who’s getting widespread notoriety because he fought the system and won! And, as we all know Miranda enjoys giving special names to some so he labeled Mr. Allen the ‘Dragon Slayer’ because he stood up to a bank (Bank of America) and got justice for his client in addition to receiving monies for his services in the process.

If you didn’t know the specifics it’s a must read since Allen reverse the process legally and approach the bank who defaulted on the terms of his client, a client who had no mortgage on his property, but was owed monies.

Without hesitation Allen took the case presented by his employer Conrad Wilkomm; and, in the process was able to recoup his client’s monies using the Federal Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, which is similar to the bank putting a lien on your wages when you don’t come through with payment. However, in this case it was a seizure of all property inside the bank — cash, files, personal effects, etc. A befuddled branch manager made a few calls and cut Allen a check.

So if you find yourself in a similar plight, that is, if the bank owes you a large sum of money and has defaulted on the terms of your contract, contact Todd Allen at Conrad Wilkomm phone number 239-262-5303 or todd@swfloridalaw.com and tell them Yo Soy Latino sent you.

Next guest announcement was Jason Henry of the West Orlando News Online (WONO) who was filling in for Mr. Keith Longmore. Mr. Longmore was unable to participate in today’s program but do not despair as Henry was well-matched to walk in his shoes. For more on that subject, go to our archived shows.

Sadly the hour came up upon us and soon it was time to say goodbye. Next week the adventure continues. So prepare yourself for a return visit and let’s get ready to rumble as YSL presents more mayhem, politics and guests for your listening delight.

A Young Man’s Guide for a More Pulled Together Look
June 11, 2011
Now for the young male who wants to look pulled together and stylish, these tips should help you get there.

1. Wear Clothes that fit. Oversized clothing can be in vogue but they can also be distracting. Buy something that actually fits or one size larger then have it tailored.
2. Wear Clothes Suitable for the Occasion. Don’t wear an outfit to a job interview that’s too casual and more appropriate for a club or rock concert.
3. Avoid Wrinkled Clothing. Press your shirts and trousers or use a steamer. The wrinkly look isn’t a good style for anyone. Make sure your clothing is crisped.
4. Keep your shoes Polished. Shoes that are scuffed and worn out are unattractive. Take a few minutes to give them a spit shine.
5. Accessorize with a Belt. As a rule belts should match your shoes in color, but by adding one to your dress pant it actually pulls the entire outfit together and it is quite fashionable.
6. Socks. This is one of my pet peeves. Always wear dark socks with a dress pant, no white socks please. Leave them for your casual wear and athletic shoes.
7. Keep your underwear where they belong. Not only is this not cool, who wants to see your skivvies.
8. Add a leather jacket. Definitely a must have in any young man’s wardrobe because it utters confidence.
9. Leather not so much. Try a nice versatile jacket. One that is suitable to wear over jeans or nice trousers.
10. Find colors that flatter you. Now this is very important. Usually the classic black, red or white can be worn by most skin types. However, not ever color is flattering to all pigmentation. Take caution not to wear a color that can draw attention to your paleness or can make you look tired or fat.

They may require some effort and attention on your part to the current fashion trends but, in the end it will all be worth it because you’ll get noticed for your polished look. And, isn’t that the bottom line — getting noticed!

Recipe...
Barbecued Spiced Shrimp with Tomato Salad
June 11, 2011
The big, bold Southwestern flavors in this shrimp seasoning—which include pure ancho chile powder, smoked paprika, cumin and brown sugar— certainly does epitomize Bobby Flay’s style. Plus this seasoning mix would also be terrific on port chops or beef tenderloin.

Usually shrimp dishes tend to go best with white whines, but the potent spices here are more suited to a red—so split the difference and pour a rose. Dry roses from California and South America are often more full-bodies than those from France, making them ideal for this recipe.

Serving: 8 • Time: 25 MIN

Ingredients:
1/3 cup packed basil leaves, plus extra leaves for garnish
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 ¼ teaspoons sweet smoked paprika
1 ½ teaspoons light brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoons pure ancho chile powder
½ teaspoon ground cumin
¼ teaspoon ground coriander
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
24 jumbo shrimp, shelled and de-veined
2 tablespoons canola oil
3 large yellow heirloom tomatoes (1 ½ pounds), sliced ¼ inch thick
1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced

Directions:
In a blender, puree the 1/3 cup of basil leaves with the olive oil until smooth. Season the oil with salt and black pepper.

Light a grill or preheat a grill pan. In a small bowl, mix the sweet smoked paprika with the pure ancho chile powder, light brown sugar, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. Brush the shrimp with the canola oil and season all over with the spice mixture. Grill the shrimp over moderately high heat, turning once, until they are lightly charred and cooked through, about 4 minutes total.

Arrange the tomato and onion slices on a platter and drizzle with the basil oil. Top with the shrimp, garnish with the remaining basil leaves and serve.

MAKE AHEAD The basil oil can be refrigerated overnight. Bring to room temperature before serving.

Sun Poisoning
June 11, 2011
Sun poisoning doesn't really mean you've been poisoned. It is often the term used for a severe case of sunburn. This is a burn from ultraviolet (UV) radiation that inflames your skin. Sun poisoning can also refer to other reactions. Two examples are polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) and solar urticaria.

Signs and Symptoms of Sun Poisoning
Within just 15 minutes of being in the sun, you can become sunburned, but you might not know it right away. The redness and discomfort might show up a few hours later. You can become severely sunburned if you stay in the sun a long time and don't wear protection. You are at greater risk if you have light skin and fair hair.

Polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) affects individuals with fair skin and hair with severe sunburn or sun poisoning. The end results are one or more of the following symptoms:

• Skin redness and blistering
• Pain and tingling
• Swelling
• Headache
• Fever and chills
• Nausea
• Dizziness
• Dehydration

Another detection if you have PMLE is a severe skin rash, usually appearing within 30 minutes to several hours of going out in the sun and the rash may be itchy and have these characteristics:

• Small bumps all over the body
• Dense clumps of bumps
• Hives, usually on the arms, lower legs, and chest
• A hereditary form of PMLE occurs in Native Americans. It can last from spring until fall.

Other symptoms of redness, burning, and itching, which usually last two or three days, but can persist for weeks; or, may begin within a few hours of sun exposure but go away within hours will be accompanied by:

• Fatigue
• Chills
• Headache
• Nausea

How much sunlight individuals can tolerate varies from person to person.
Then there is solar urticria, another form of sun poisoning. The symptoms of solar urticaria can develop within minutes of exposure to sun. If large areas of skin are involved, symptoms may include:

• Itchiness
• Redness
• Raised areas on the skin (wheals) or blisters
• Wheezing
• Dizziness
• Loss of consciousness

Although the blisters usually go away within hours, you may experience the reaction off and on throughout the years.

Treating Sun Poisoning
For severe sunburn, these simple remedies usually do the trick:
• Get out of the sun.
• Take a cool (not cold) shower or bath or apply cool compresses.
• Drink extra fluids for a few days.
• Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to relive pain.
• Use aloe gel or another moisturizer.
• Completely cover sunburned areas when going outside.

Seek immediate medical care for these symptoms:

• A sunburn that forms blisters, covers a large area, or is very painful
• Facial swelling
• Fever and chills
• Upset stomach
• Headache, confusion, or faintness
• Signs of dehydration

Treatment for PMLE depends on its severity. Other than staying out of the sun and protecting yourself when you are, you may not need treatment. The rash can clear by itself within seven to 10 days. For solar urticaria, antihistamines are effective in some cases.

Other treatment or prevention for either type of reaction may include:
• Topical corticosteroids
• Sunscreen with both ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) protection
• Phototherapy with psoralen UV light (PUVA) to desensitize skin to UV light
• Low-dose antimalarials (for PMLE)

If you are on medications, check with your doctor to see if any might be making your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Here are examples of drugs that might do that:

• Acne medications
• Antibiotics
• Antidepressants
• Diuretics
• Heart drugs
• Birth control pills
• Topical antibacterials, fragrances, or antifungals

Preventing Sun Poisoning
Don't forget the basics of sun safety. Apply SUNSCREEN with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 to all exposed areas of skin. Make sure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Do this15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply about every two hours.

Limit exposure during the hottest hours of the day — between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. And remember that water, snow, and sand can intensify damaging rays of the sun. Finally, make sunglasses, a hat, and protective clothing standard sun gear.

White House seeks Israeli Agreement to Negotiate on 1967 Lines
June 11, 2011
Washington (AP) — The White House is pressing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly adopt President Obama’s view that Israel’s pre-1967 border should be the basis for future peace talks. An appeal was made to Jewish leaders on Friday that the request of Israel was part of an effort to head off Palestinian plans to declare an independent state at the United Nations in September. The request of Mr. Netanyahu was made Monday to the prime minister’s top peace negotiator, Yitzhak Molcho at a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the National Security Council, according to an Israeli diplomat based in Jerusalem.

The diplomatic effort shows President Obama is working to restart stalled negotiations on the creation of a Palestinian state, as many close U.S. counterterrorism allies in the region fall to the recent wave of revolutionary unrest called the Arab Spring. Mr. Simon, who served as the Clinton White House’s top counterterrorism official said the United States had about a month to head off the Palestinian plan to declare a state during the annual United Nations General Assembly meeting set for September.

“We have a month to see if we can work something out with the Israelis and Palestinians as accepting these principles as a basis for negotiations,” he said “If that happens we are somewhat confident that the Palestinians will drop what they intend to do in the U.N.”

The tension over the 1967 lines lessened after the president spoke to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee during Mr. Netanyahu’s visit. He clarified that the final borders between Israel and a future state of Palestine should take into account demographic realities and facts on the ground, a clarification that brought President Obama closer than his predecessor President Buch.

Mr. Bush, in 2004, wrote a letter to then Prime Minister Ariel Sharon saying it was “unrealistic to expect that the outcome of final status negotiations will be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949, and all previous efforts to negotiate a two-state solution have reached the same conclusion.”

In the conference call Friday, Mr. Simon said the United States would oppose a Palestinian unilateral declaration at the United Nations whether Israel adopted the Obama principles or not. He also said that the Palestinian leadership was divided on whether to proceed with the unilateral declaration in September.

“Kung Fu Panda 2” is undeniably sweet! This film is not only delightful but will keep children interested, no matter how young. It does get a little dark but not alarmingly so. Po still delivers the same wonderful shenanigans as the first. The script is good; however, the visuals are brilliant and will leave you breathless. Overall the film was quite enjoyable. Qatar deports Alleged Libyan Rape Victim
(CNN) — The United States is “disappointed” by the expulsion by Qatar of Eman al-Obeidy to Libya, a decision that it said is a “breach of humanitarian norms.” Al-Obeidy accused Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s security forces of gang-raping her and fled to Libya following the alleged rape. But while she was in Qatar awaiting resettlement as a refugee was deported early Thursday.

President Obama is rebuked by House for using Troops in Libya
Washington (AP) — President Barack Obama has been criticized by the House of Representatives for using US forces against Libya without congressional approval. The House adopted a resolution, by 268-145, rebuking the president. It said the president has failed to provide a “compelling rationale” for the nearly three-month old operation to aid rebels. Democrats and Republicans complained the president ignored the constitutional authority of Congress. The non-binding measure insists President Obama provide details on the scope of the mission and its costs within 14 days. It also bars US ground forces, except to rescue a US service member.

NATO uses Attack Helicopters for first time in Libya Air Assault
(CNN) — NATO used attack helicopters for the first time Saturday as part of its military operation aimed at increasing pressure on Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s regime. “The use of attack helicopters provides the NATO operation with additional flexibility and engage pro-Gadhafi forces who deliberately target civilians and attempt to hide in populated areas,” NATO said in a statement. Western Libya is where rebels and pro-Gadhafi forces are in combat.

Boeing to Lay Off 150 Space Workers
Cape Canaveral FL (clickorlando) — The Boeing Co. will lay off 150 of its 515 Kennedy Space Center workers on August 5, providing the last shuttle mission, scheduled for July 8, is complete. The layoffs could come later if the launch is delayed. Meanwhile, nationwide 510 Boeing employees were issued layoff notices today. Some 260 employees in Houston and 100 in Huntington Beach, CA, received them in addition to the KSC workers. The company hopes to redeploy some personnel to the International Space Station and Commercial Crew Development programs in Florida, while aircraft assembly plants, such as the one gearing up in Charleston, S.C., could hire other Boeing workers from Florida.

New Law Bans Baggy Pants
Orlando FL (clickorlando) — Students in Florida won’t be spanked, but they will be punished if they don’t pull up their pants. Gov. Rick Scott on Thursday signed the bill, championed by state Sen. Gary Siplin, of Orlando, into law. The bill bans students in Florida from wearing clothing that exposes their undergarments or indecently exposes body parts while at school.

Boy 12, Indicted in Brother’s Killing
Jacksonville FL (clickorlando) — A 12-year-old boy was indicted Thursday in Jackson on first-degree murder charges in the beating death of his 2-year-old brother. Cristian Fernandez beat David Galarriago on March 14th at the Carrington Place Apartments in the 11800 block of Alden Road according to the state attorney’s office.

Fernandez is the youngest person ever indicted on murder charges in Duval County; and, the fact that we indicated a 12-year-old in and of itself is a stunning event and a sad event in our prosecutorial lives that we had to do this, but it is the only legal mechanism that we can use to protect the community from this particular defendant at this point, State Attorney Angela Corey said.

YSL Host knows How to “Fuel the Fire!” and Deon Long makes a Guest Appearance
by Haydee Ayala
June 4, 2011
Orlando, FL — It’s amazing how easily sparks will fly when the topic is smoldering to begin with. And, that’s just what happened this afternoon in the studio of YSL. The second YSL host Jose Miranda pointed out the actions of Gov. Rick Scott who quietly sign into law several major bills dealing with prescription, drugs, Medicaid, growth management, vouchers, the so-call “baggy pants” and more.

Yet a great many of low-income Americans feel besieged and beleaguered and mostly singled out. Still the “King” didn’t blink an eye as he signed those 48 bills last Thursday. Will his personal gain be every Americans’ loss? Why can’t he focus on the immediate and more pressing issues like jobs, wages and the housing market?

Perhaps that would be too difficult a task as the governor is living in a different universe. However, have things backfired on the governor and the GOP-controlled legislature? And is more conflict brewing between Scott and the Republican GOP? We’ll see as many lawsuits continue to flood the courts to block the “King’s” executive orders.

Many listeners of the show either agree or disagree nonetheless it is a forum to openly discuss any topic especially those that breed of injustice against the American people regardless of their status in life.

Next Miranda introduces Deon Long who admitted to the YSL host that he was in favor of the Ryan Plan – a plan that if it remains intact, the negative effects of this proposal will affect future retirees, working families and the poor. We at YSL admit that Medicare needs to be changed but these proposed cuts are way too severe. Are we returning to the 19th Century where Americans were forced to sleep on piles of straw because they couldn’t afford beds? What message are we truly sending to the American people!

Now Mr. Long who is no stranger to the world of politics and although he might agree with Ryan Plan in part may not agree with all that it proposes. Long has not admitted that he will run for office in 2012 but did say if he does he will make that decision sometime in the summer. Well one thing is certain he has earned favor with one of our listeners providing the new rezoning law does not hamper her vote.

This concludes our broadcast for today. If you want to hear more on today’s program please visit our archived shows. And don’t forget to come back next week for more head spinning headlines!

Summer Dresses!
June 4, 2011
Let’s face facts! We are always looking forward to the summer months especially if one lives here in Florida since women are inspired by the season to be creatively fashionable, feminine, and exciting. Just feeling the sun touch our skin somehow rejuvenates us, allowing us to bare all. No more turtlenecks or cashmere sweaters. It is time to let loose and store those garments away.

I’m sure your wondering what the hottest and trendiest summer dresses are for 2011. If you haven’t decided to enhance your wardrobe here are few suggestions.

First consider the occasion. If it’s a cocktail dress you seek then there are several options but there was one that caught my eye — a gorgeous metallic summer cocktail thigh-high dress with a v-neckline and back fringe which hangs slightly off from the shoulders. It was quite trendy and shimmering with lacy details. But if that’s not for you consider a sexy sequined summer cocktail dress. Just stay within the light creamy colors and more sophisticated looking ones.

Second is the long maxi summer dress. This style allows you to be carefree and elegant without feeling so dressed up. More importantly, it is suitable for just about any body shape and you can wear them whatever the occasion.

Third is the cute and flirty white summer dress. Perfect for day or night; and, as we all know white is always very trendy during the summer hot months. By choosing a white summer dress you can’t go wrong because white is your classic black.

No matter the dress, choose one according to your personal style. Dress in a way that will make you feel confident about the way you look. Select a dress that compliments and meshes with your chosen style.

(NFL) – Lawyers for the NFL and its players met before a three-judge panel Friday at the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals with the judges considering the league’s appeal of an injunction lifting the nearly three-month lockout. Kermit Bye, the presiding judge in the hearing—and the lone dissenter in the appeals court’s previous decisions to stay U.S. District Judge Susan Nelson’s April 25 ruling—said after the 90-minute hearing that the judges would rule “in due course.”
Bye added that the panel “wouldn’t be all that hurt if you go out and settle that case” and warned the decision will be one that neither party likes. That decision likely will come in 2 to 6 weeks.

Scientists Say Oral Sex May Led to Throat Cancer
June 4, 2011
In a new study, US scientists suggest that people who have oral sex with 5 or more partners during their lifetime have a much greater chance of having throat cancer and they suspect the cause is a well known strain of the Human papillomavirus (HPV) that is linked to a number of anogenital cancers. US scientists have said there is strong evidence linking oral sex to cancer, and urged more study of how human papillomaviruses may be to blame for a rise in oral cancer among white men.

The research was conducted by Dr. Maura Gillison of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, US, and colleagues.

Scientists already knew that HPV was doing something at the molecular level to help trigger a type of throat cancer known as oropharyngeal squamous-cell carcinoma, but consistent epidemiological evidence was still missing.

Researchers have found a 225-percent increase in oral cancer cases in the United States from 1974 to 2007, mainly among white men, said Maura Gillison of Ohio State University.
Previous studies have suggested that people who have performed oral sex on six or more partners over a lifetime face an eight-fold higher risk of acquiring HPV-related head or neck cancer than those with fewer than six partners, she said.

The results suggested that once the link with HPV is present, there is no added risk from tobacco use and alcohol consumption, usually regarded as the highest risk factors for this type of throat cancer.

Dr Gillinson and colleagues suggest that HPV “drives” the cancer and once the cell is sufficiently disrupted to cause cancer, the impact of tobacco and alcohol is unlikely to contribute any more risk.

A study published earlier this month in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the HPV vaccine could prevent 90 percent of genital warts in men, and the vaccine has also been approved against anal cancer in men and women.

Harper said she was not recommending the general population get the HPV vaccine because research has not yet established its effectiveness past five to eight years for cervical cancer.
Teens really have no idea that oral sex is related to any outcome like STIs (sexually transmitted infections), HPV, chlamydia, and so on.

Gov. Scott quietly signs 48 bills including Medicaid overhaul – into Law
June 4, 2011
Tallahassee (Florida Tribune) — Gov. Rick Scott on Thursday quietly signed into law nearly 50 bills, including sweeping measures on Medicaid and growth management as well as legislation that expands vouchers and the use of online education.
Scott signed both HB 7107 and 7109 which call for an overhaul of the state’s $22 billion Medicaid program and replaces it one that will competitively bid it among interested managed care plans. The legislation also includes lawsuit limits for providers who work in the program.

The plan does not extend the five-county reform project currently underway in Broward, Duval, Baker, Clay and Nassau counties. Instead, it establishes a new program where long term care and care for women and children is delivered through a managed care model.

The Medicaid overhaul, however, will need approval from the federal government before it can be carried out.

Scott also signed significant education bills. HB 1329 overhauls the McKay Scholarship program, which offers public or private school vouchers to students with certain mental and physical disabilities. The legislation opens up those who are eligible to receive the vouchers to a wide range of disabilities. HB 7197 mandates that every student take at least one online course prior to graduation and that statewide assessments be administered online by the 2014-2015 school year. The bill also allows a massive expansion of the use of online education. The bill creates virtual charter schools and blended-learning charter schools, and authorizes the Florida Virtual School to provide full-time virtual education to students in grades K-12 and part-time to students in grades 4-12.

Scott also signed HB 883, which would ban cities and counties from regulating the nutritional content and marketing of food in restaurants. The legislation will help derail any efforts to ban Happy Meals served by McDonald’s, which have come under fire by doctors and anti-obesity advocates.

The governor also signed HB 97 – which would prohibit health plans sold through an insurance exchange from selling abortion as part of the policy. Insurance exchanges are a key part of federal health care reform that is scheduled to start operating in 2014.
Another health care bill signed by Scott on Thursday was HB 395. The bill makes changes to how Shands Gainesville and Shands Jacksonville operate, and gives the hospitals and affiliated clinics and practices – as well as any other not-for-profit subsidiary that may be created –- sovereign immunity.

Here are a few others:
HB 155, the so-called "Glocks and docs" bill, which restricts discussions between doctors and their patients about gun ownership. It was a watered-down version of a tougher measure sought by the National Rifle Association that wanted to penalize doctors who questioned their patients about gun ownership.

HB 1193, which says people cannot be compelled to buy health insurance, except in limited circumstances, which is a response to the new federal health care law that will mandate that coverage beginning in 2014.

HB 965 which expands the use of state vouchers provided to disabled students under the John McKay scholarship program. The measure increases the number of conditions for qualifying students.

HB 1331 which makes it easier for students in low-performing schools to take advantage of vouchers.

HB 965 which increases the amount of the corporate tax deduction companies receive for sponsoring voucher scholarships.

SB 228, the so-called "baggy pants" bill, which requires local school boards to adopt dress codes banning clothes that "expose underwear or body parts in an indecent or vulgar manner."
