Movie Review:
X-Men: First Class — rating: 3.5 STARS
This prequel features a cast of rising new talents rather than established stars, which is quite refreshing. And, in comparison to the X-Men trilogy, it could be a milestone for Twentieth Century Fox because it recounts the formative years of when they first met, their early alliances, to the inevitable fall out and the taking of opposite approaches in their dealings with ordinary humans who were fearful of their super powers.

In essence, X-Men: First Class pulls everything together! This movie is clever, cohesive and packed with action, humor, some retro 60s styles. In addition, it has a little history centered on the Cuban missile crisis. Overall, it is enjoyable and time well spent!

Woman who say Cop broke her teeth to Sue
Orlando, FL (Orlando Sentinel) — UPDATE: Lisa Wareham, the woman whose front teeth were broken in a confrontation with an officer (Officer Livio Beccaccio) in February will be suing the Orlando Police Department for “unwarranted and unlawful aggravated battery”, her attorney officially confirmed Wednesday. The notice addressed to Orlando’s police chief and mayor and the state’s Department of Financial Services was sent to the agencies Wednesday, Zelman said. Meanwhile, Orlando police spokeswoman Lt. Barbara Jones said it would be “inappropriate” to comment on pending litigation. The agency is reviewing the incident.

‘Personhood’ bills threaten Legality of Birth Control by Theresa Erickson, Esq.
(theafa.typepad.com) — “Personhood” bills are on the rise and are threatening both women’s reproductive rights and access to IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) in all 50 states; however, the two states where they are currently building a great deal of support are Iowa (HF 153) and Oklahoma (HB 1571). These bills are clearly intended to limit IVF treatment, certain forms (if not almost all) of birth control, as well as protecting all life “from the moment of conception”, while removing any and all judicial oversight and interpretation. For Iowa and Oklahoma, be aware that these bills are a clear attempt to provide all rights and protections currently only provided to those functioning outside of a woman’s uterus to a fertilized egg in a Petri dish or in a woman’s fallopian tube. In short, a woman who does become pregnant would not only lose her right to any medical privacy, she will essentially lose any decision-making authority over her own health.

As Arizona wildfire rages, Residents face Tough Choices
Eager (CNN) — While firefighters battled a massive, fast-moving blaze (known as Wallow Fire) which began sweeping through the Apache National Forest late last month and sweeping through eastern Arizona, local residents in its path faced serious choices: whether to stay and what to take with them if they leave. The fire has burned about 389,000 acres. And though authorities have evacuated thousands their concern is that it could continue to spread.

Community Activist Dies in Accident on W. Pensacola Street
Tallahassee (WCTV) — Community Activist Edwina Stephens dies in a fatal accident on W. Pensacola Street who earlier that day was working in her yard. The details of the accident have not been released only that the driver and passenger were taken to TMH. Stephens who loved the Southside loved being a voice for the community and was perceived by many to be a giant in her community. Ms. Stephens was also a member of her church for more than 50 years. Our heartfelt condolenses go to the family.

GM CEO Calls for $1 Gas Tax Hike
New York (CNNMoney) — General Motors CEO Dan Akerson said his company and his industry would be helped, not hurt, if consumers paid higher gas taxes. He also said that a higher gas tax, including an immediate 50-cent-a-gallon increase to take advantage of recent declines in gas prices, would probably make some of his Republican friends “puke.” But he said it would do more to help the environment than the pending fuel economy rules.

Bernanke: Job Market ‘Far from Normal’
New York (CNNMoney) — The economy lost some momentum recently Ben Bernanke acknowledged Tuesday, but the Federal Reserve chairman is still optimistic that the recovery will pick up again in the second half of the year. Bernanke also called on lawmakers to address the national deficit with a long-term outlook, but cautioned Congress against making any drastic cuts that could derail the economic recovery. Sharp cuts could be “self-defeating” he said, if they were to “undercut the still-fragile recovery.” In closing he also said, that should his inflation predictions be wrong, the Fed “would respond as necessary.”

Rep. Anthony Weiner admits to posting lewd picture
New York (Politico) – In a tearful press conference on Monday, Rep. Anthony Weiner admitted that he posted a lewd picture of himself on Twitter, and said he was “deeply ashamed” and that “I have made terrible mistakes. … and I’m deeply sorry.” He said he’d sent numerous inappropriate pictures to women he met online over the past few years, but never had a physical relationship with any of them. Should he resign? Will contingents forgive him? That remains to be seen!

4-Year-Old Girl Takes NYC Art World by Storm!
New York (NBC) — Australian artist, Aelita Andre is making a spash in the NYC art scene and she’s only four years old. Last weekend at the Agora Gallery in Chelsea, Aelita made her solo exhibition selling paintings for a whopping $27,000. What makes this child unique is her range of colors and her ability to display an added whimsicalness to her art now that’s charming. When asked when her passion began she said she was just three. However, her parents recall that at nine months she crawled onto the canvas and simply took to it letting her hands move around it. Her paintings are known internationally and can fetch thousands of dollars. If you happened to be in NYC go to the Agora Gallery for “The Prodigy of Color” exhibit which will continue until the end of June.

Bacterial Outbreak in Germany Shows Signs of Slowing
Berlin (AP) — Mysterious strain of E. coli in Europe is still rising more than a month after being detected. But authorities believe it could be slowing. This strain resulted in at least 18 deaths and 1,733 people getting sick. Though nearly 200 new cases of E. coli infection were reported in Germany in the first two days of June, The Robert Koch Institute, the German institution responsible for disease control, said new infections peaked on May 21 and 22 and have been dropping since then. Suspicion had fallen on raw tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce as the sources of the germ, but researchers now have not been able to pinpoint the food responsible.

Today’s Highlights...
Guest Appearances by Todd Allen and Jason Henry
by Haydee Ayala
June 11, 2011
Orlando, FL — Amid his booming voice dashing good looks and natural charisma, YSL host Jose Miranda will command attention. As soon as the clock strikes 12:00 pm and its Saturday afternoon listeners gather to hear his opening catchphrase, ‘Good Morning Orlando!' That is of course before this unforgettable host leaps into the weeks’ breaking news; and, talks about a comment from a young lady who wrote YSL saying, “Why do you call your show Yo Soy Latino when you never speak on Hispanic stuff, all I hear is politics?”

Miranda goes on to explain that Hispanics for the most part do not know what’s going on around them; and, when confronted with issues that directly affect them suddenly there are raised eyebrows. Of course, there was more but we will leave that for your listening pleasure as time lends itself to the breaking news of the week.

Starting with Rep. Anthony Weiner, who’s been getting quite a bit of negative publicity lately; a follow up on Lisa Wareham, the woman whose front teeth were broken in an altercation with Officer Livio Beccaccio, is suing the Police Department for unwarranted and unlawful aggravated battery. Followed by a special health announcement taking place today — ‘A Health Festival for the Whole Family’ — right here in the Central Florida Fairgrounds from 10:00-3:00.

And, more importantly, a bill that is being signed in some states and is being considered in most of the 50 states which directly concerns women, the “Personhood” bill — a law specially directed toward women and their unborn fetus. This law if implement has very damaging effects as it will control your pregnancy from start to finish relinquishing your rights to any medical privacy and decision-making over your own health. Of course there were other issues raised relating to the status of Puerto Rico and whether or not Puerto Rico should receive Federal monies.

Miranda then changes things up a bit by introducing his first guest, Mr. Todd Allen. A young attorney from Conrad Wilkomm in Naples who’s getting widespread notoriety because he fought the system and won! And, as we all know Miranda enjoys giving special names to some so he labeled Mr. Allen the ‘Dragon Slayer’ because he stood up to a bank (Bank of America) and got justice for his client in addition to receiving monies for his services in the process.

If you didn’t know the specifics it’s a must read since Allen reverse the process legally and approach the bank who defaulted on the terms of his client, a client who had no mortgage on his property, but was owed monies.

Without hesitation Allen took the case presented by his employer Conrad Wilkomm; and, in the process was able to recoup his client’s monies using the Federal Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, which is similar to the bank putting a lien on your wages when you don’t come through with payment. However, in this case it was a seizure of all property inside the bank — cash, files, personal effects, etc. A befuddled branch manager made a few calls and cut Allen a check.

So if you find yourself in a similar plight, that is, if the bank owes you a large sum of money and has defaulted on the terms of your contract, contact Todd Allen at Conrad Wilkomm phone number 239-262-5303 or todd@swfloridalaw.com and tell them Yo Soy Latino sent you.

Next guest announcement was Jason Henry of the West Orlando News Online (WONO) who was filling in for Mr. Keith Longmore. Mr. Longmore was unable to participate in today’s program but do not despair as Henry was well-matched to walk in his shoes. For more on that subject, go to our archived shows.

Sadly the hour came up upon us and soon it was time to say goodbye. Next week the adventure continues. So prepare yourself for a return visit and let’s get ready to rumble as YSL presents more mayhem, politics and guests for your listening delight.

A Young Man’s Guide for a More Pulled Together Look
June 11, 2011
Now for the young male who wants to look pulled together and stylish, these tips should help you get there.

1. Wear Clothes that fit. Oversized clothing can be in vogue but they can also be distracting. Buy something that actually fits or one size larger then have it tailored.
2. Wear Clothes Suitable for the Occasion. Don’t wear an outfit to a job interview that’s too casual and more appropriate for a club or rock concert.
3. Avoid Wrinkled Clothing. Press your shirts and trousers or use a steamer. The wrinkly look isn’t a good style for anyone. Make sure your clothing is crisped.
4. Keep your shoes Polished. Shoes that are scuffed and worn out are unattractive. Take a few minutes to give them a spit shine.
5. Accessorize with a Belt. As a rule belts should match your shoes in color, but by adding one to your dress pant it actually pulls the entire outfit together and it is quite fashionable.
6. Socks. This is one of my pet peeves. Always wear dark socks with a dress pant, no white socks please. Leave them for your casual wear and athletic shoes.
7. Keep your underwear where they belong. Not only is this not cool, who wants to see your skivvies.
8. Add a leather jacket. Definitely a must have in any young man’s wardrobe because it utters confidence.
9. Leather not so much. Try a nice versatile jacket. One that is suitable to wear over jeans or nice trousers.
10. Find colors that flatter you. Now this is very important. Usually the classic black, red or white can be worn by most skin types. However, not ever color is flattering to all pigmentation. Take caution not to wear a color that can draw attention to your paleness or can make you look tired or fat.

They may require some effort and attention on your part to the current fashion trends but, in the end it will all be worth it because you’ll get noticed for your polished look. And, isn’t that the bottom line — getting noticed!

Recipe...
Barbecued Spiced Shrimp with Tomato Salad
June 11, 2011
The big, bold Southwestern flavors in this shrimp seasoning—which include pure ancho chile powder, smoked paprika, cumin and brown sugar— certainly does epitomize Bobby Flay’s style. Plus this seasoning mix would also be terrific on port chops or beef tenderloin.

Usually shrimp dishes tend to go best with white whines, but the potent spices here are more suited to a red—so split the difference and pour a rose. Dry roses from California and South America are often more full-bodies than those from France, making them ideal for this recipe.

Serving: 8 • Time: 25 MIN

Ingredients:
1/3 cup packed basil leaves, plus extra leaves for garnish
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 ¼ teaspoons sweet smoked paprika
1 ½ teaspoons light brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoons pure ancho chile powder
½ teaspoon ground cumin
¼ teaspoon ground coriander
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
24 jumbo shrimp, shelled and de-veined
2 tablespoons canola oil
3 large yellow heirloom tomatoes (1 ½ pounds), sliced ¼ inch thick
1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced

Directions:
In a blender, puree the 1/3 cup of basil leaves with the olive oil until smooth. Season the oil with salt and black pepper.

Light a grill or preheat a grill pan. In a small bowl, mix the sweet smoked paprika with the pure ancho chile powder, light brown sugar, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. Brush the shrimp with the canola oil and season all over with the spice mixture. Grill the shrimp over moderately high heat, turning once, until they are lightly charred and cooked through, about 4 minutes total.

Arrange the tomato and onion slices on a platter and drizzle with the basil oil. Top with the shrimp, garnish with the remaining basil leaves and serve.

MAKE AHEAD The basil oil can be refrigerated overnight. Bring to room temperature before serving.

Sun Poisoning
June 11, 2011
Sun poisoning doesn't really mean you've been poisoned. It is often the term used for a severe case of sunburn. This is a burn from ultraviolet (UV) radiation that inflames your skin. Sun poisoning can also refer to other reactions. Two examples are polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) and solar urticaria.

Signs and Symptoms of Sun Poisoning
Within just 15 minutes of being in the sun, you can become sunburned, but you might not know it right away. The redness and discomfort might show up a few hours later. You can become severely sunburned if you stay in the sun a long time and don't wear protection. You are at greater risk if you have light skin and fair hair.

Polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) affects individuals with fair skin and hair with severe sunburn or sun poisoning. The end results are one or more of the following symptoms:

• Skin redness and blistering
• Pain and tingling
• Swelling
• Headache
• Fever and chills
• Nausea
• Dizziness
• Dehydration

Another detection if you have PMLE is a severe skin rash, usually appearing within 30 minutes to several hours of going out in the sun and the rash may be itchy and have these characteristics:

• Small bumps all over the body
• Dense clumps of bumps
• Hives, usually on the arms, lower legs, and chest
• A hereditary form of PMLE occurs in Native Americans. It can last from spring until fall.

Other symptoms of redness, burning, and itching, which usually last two or three days, but can persist for weeks; or, may begin within a few hours of sun exposure but go away within hours will be accompanied by:

• Fatigue
• Chills
• Headache
• Nausea

How much sunlight individuals can tolerate varies from person to person.
Then there is solar urticria, another form of sun poisoning. The symptoms of solar urticaria can develop within minutes of exposure to sun. If large areas of skin are involved, symptoms may include:

• Itchiness
• Redness
• Raised areas on the skin (wheals) or blisters
• Wheezing
• Dizziness
• Loss of consciousness

Although the blisters usually go away within hours, you may experience the reaction off and on throughout the years.

Treating Sun Poisoning
For severe sunburn, these simple remedies usually do the trick:
• Get out of the sun.
• Take a cool (not cold) shower or bath or apply cool compresses.
• Drink extra fluids for a few days.
• Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to relive pain.
• Use aloe gel or another moisturizer.
• Completely cover sunburned areas when going outside.

Seek immediate medical care for these symptoms:

• A sunburn that forms blisters, covers a large area, or is very painful
• Facial swelling
• Fever and chills
• Upset stomach
• Headache, confusion, or faintness
• Signs of dehydration

Treatment for PMLE depends on its severity. Other than staying out of the sun and protecting yourself when you are, you may not need treatment. The rash can clear by itself within seven to 10 days. For solar urticaria, antihistamines are effective in some cases.

Other treatment or prevention for either type of reaction may include:
• Topical corticosteroids
• Sunscreen with both ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) protection
• Phototherapy with psoralen UV light (PUVA) to desensitize skin to UV light
• Low-dose antimalarials (for PMLE)

If you are on medications, check with your doctor to see if any might be making your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Here are examples of drugs that might do that:

• Acne medications
• Antibiotics
• Antidepressants
• Diuretics
• Heart drugs
• Birth control pills
• Topical antibacterials, fragrances, or antifungals

Preventing Sun Poisoning
Don't forget the basics of sun safety. Apply SUNSCREEN with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 to all exposed areas of skin. Make sure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Do this15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply about every two hours.

Limit exposure during the hottest hours of the day — between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. And remember that water, snow, and sand can intensify damaging rays of the sun. Finally, make sunglasses, a hat, and protective clothing standard sun gear.

White House seeks Israeli Agreement to Negotiate on 1967 Lines
June 11, 2011
Washington (AP) — The White House is pressing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly adopt President Obama’s view that Israel’s pre-1967 border should be the basis for future peace talks. An appeal was made to Jewish leaders on Friday that the request of Israel was part of an effort to head off Palestinian plans to declare an independent state at the United Nations in September. The request of Mr. Netanyahu was made Monday to the prime minister’s top peace negotiator, Yitzhak Molcho at a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the National Security Council, according to an Israeli diplomat based in Jerusalem.

The diplomatic effort shows President Obama is working to restart stalled negotiations on the creation of a Palestinian state, as many close U.S. counterterrorism allies in the region fall to the recent wave of revolutionary unrest called the Arab Spring. Mr. Simon, who served as the Clinton White House’s top counterterrorism official said the United States had about a month to head off the Palestinian plan to declare a state during the annual United Nations General Assembly meeting set for September.

“We have a month to see if we can work something out with the Israelis and Palestinians as accepting these principles as a basis for negotiations,” he said “If that happens we are somewhat confident that the Palestinians will drop what they intend to do in the U.N.”

The tension over the 1967 lines lessened after the president spoke to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee during Mr. Netanyahu’s visit. He clarified that the final borders between Israel and a future state of Palestine should take into account demographic realities and facts on the ground, a clarification that brought President Obama closer than his predecessor President Buch.

Mr. Bush, in 2004, wrote a letter to then Prime Minister Ariel Sharon saying it was “unrealistic to expect that the outcome of final status negotiations will be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949, and all previous efforts to negotiate a two-state solution have reached the same conclusion.”

In the conference call Friday, Mr. Simon said the United States would oppose a Palestinian unilateral declaration at the United Nations whether Israel adopted the Obama principles or not. He also said that the Palestinian leadership was divided on whether to proceed with the unilateral declaration in September.
