Movie Review:
Rio — Rating: 4 STARS
This film is totally delightful and brilliant with jokes. If you liked “Ice Age” you’re sure to enjoy this one. The adventures these characters get into are hilarious. It is wonderfully cast and beautifully animated. There’s a huge range of characters which keep the film engaging and fun — Linda, Blue, Tulio (the bird scientist), Pedro and Nico (the two slick birds); and, of course Raphael, the Toucan with a heart of gold.

To sum up, Rio is just a good escape. It is vibrant and colorful which makes for a great family film since there is always something interesting going on. Granted it may not be a Disney classic. Nonetheless, kids won’t be bored and neither will the adults.

Fierce fighting continues in besieged Libyan city
(CNN) — Moammar Gadhafi’s forces continued fierce shelling in the western Libyan city of Misrata Thursday destroying a cement factory and cargo containers. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Gadhafi forces targeting food warehouses in an effort to starve people into submission in the besieged city. Delegates from Arab and African nations and NATO offered support to Libyan rebels at a summit in Qatar.

China bans time travel for television
Hong Kong, China (CNN) — The new guidelines released by the State Administration of Radio Film and Television in China borders on the surreal — or, rather, an attack against the surreal. New guidelines as of March 31 discourages plot lines that contain elements of “fantasy, time-travel, random compilations of mythical stories, bizarre plots, absurd techniques, even propagating feudal superstitions, fatalism and reincarnation, ambiguous moral lessons, and a lack of positive thinking.” Time travel goes against Chinese heritage while the rest (myths, superstitions and reincarnation) are all questionable.

Japan elevates nuclear crisis from 5 to 7 while quake toll rises to 13,456
(CNN) — The death toll from Japan’s historic earthquake and tsunami neared the 13,500 mark Thursday, police reported. Total reported after Japan elevates the nuclear crisis there from a 5 to a 7, same level as Chernobyl.

Despite Calls to Cut Spending, States Still Rely Heavily on Federal Funds
(ABC) — For all the rhetoric against federal spending and encroachments on states’ autonomy, governors rely heavily on federal funds, especially given the slow economy. Not one governor turned away all the federal stimulus money their states received and, despite opposition to the Democrats’ health care plan, governors continue to take in the money that law allocated.

Even Texas took more than $12 billion in stimulus funds in 2010 despite Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who led Republican governors in denouncing what he says is federal government stepping on state sovereignty. Texas is very much dependent on federal funds, given its $23 billion deficit. Federal dollars make up about one-third of the state’s budget, and in 2009, it received more than $35 billion from the federal government, second only to California and New York.

First Applebee’s now Allegations of Alcohol at Olive Garden
Lakeland, FL (NY Daily News) — Florida woman said her 2-year-old son had to be taken to the hospital last month after he was served a white wine cocktail at Olive Garden. Jill Van Heest said she was eating with her son, Nikolai, at a Lakeland, FL Olive Garden on March 31 when her son started to act odd after finishing what she thought was orange juice. He was visibly drunk she added. His eyes were dilated and red, and he was getting loud. She learned the juice was actually a sangria cocktail which not only contains orange and pineapple juice but also white wine.

The Van Heest’s report of the Olive Garden incident comes less than a week after a Detroit Applebee’s admission of accidentally serving a margarita to a 15-month-old boy. Both children received an I.V. to flush the alcohol out of their system and released within a few hours. However, the doctors found that the blood alcohol content of .10 in each child was higher than the legal limit for an adult to drive a car.

Both Olive Garden and Applebee have expressed their apologies regarding the incident and will be making changes to address this from every occurring again.

Florida GOP employs new tactics to push ANTIUNION BILL
Tallahassee (St. Petersburg Times) — A Senate committee Wednesday barely passed a bill to weaken the political power of Florida’s public employee unions as Republican Party leaders continue the pressure on a handful of moderate Republican senators who could stand in the way of final passage.

His goal: to put into law a bill that would ban public employee unions from collecting dues through payroll deductions and require unions to obtain permission from members each year to use their dues for political activity.

Unions fear the provisions add a layer of complexity that will discourage people from joining their ranks.

Sen. Nancy Detert, a Venice Republican, said “This is a distraction. We’re reforming everything ... and yet this bill will get all kinds of heat and upset people for NOTHING. Furthermore, this has more to do with politics than it has to do with policy. And, if they all went to Georgia, we’d still have a quorum.” In other words, they are not necessary or needed to be present for business to be conducted.

Sen. Steve Oelrich (Gainesville) who said, “I haven’t made up my mind.” Sen. Jim Norman (Tampa) said, “I’m still opposed to the bill.” “It’s not my money, it’s the employees’ money and I believe they have a right to do with it as they want.” Sen. Greg Evers, (Crestview) who still remains opposed saying this is an issue that’s going to heat up before it goes away.

Now he’s enlisted the support of the Tea Party in Action, the political group he supported and worked closed with during his campaign to put pressure on Evers. Thrasher (group leader) concedes that the issue is important to SCOTT, who has been eager to court a national audience by moving the antiunion agenda in Florida; and, if it’s important to the governor, it’s important to the RPOF. The bill now moves to the Senate Rules Committee which Thrasher chairs. If we get it to the floor, they will have the votes to pass it!

Source: Excerpts from article written by Mary Ellen Klas

OPINION: Important to Scott!!!! What has that to do with UNIONS or POLICY? Clearly, Mr. Scott has a personal agenda and a political vendetta against the current President of the United States. He is using the office of Governor to incite, ridicule and offend the Presidency. He has touted that the rail service is Obamarail and the health care proposal is Obamacare.

BUT where are the jobs as unemployment stands at 10.4%? Mr. Scott has no interest in turning Florida's economy around or job growth. It appears he is self-serving in trying to make a name for himself in his outlandish decisions. Moreover, his intentions steer more towards promoting his political career rather than promoting the state of Florida, as he was elected to do.

Today’s Highlights...
April 16, 2011
Orlando, FL — YSL is the kind of show that can make you laugh your head off or add more punctuations to the issues at large with eruptions of fiery debates. Clearly you never know what to expect once the doors open, just before the on-air light goes on, and the door behind you closes. But one thing is certain it is lively from start to finish. Immediately upon hearing the theme song at Noon you know you’re just moments away from being greeted by its host Jose Miranda, the voice that gets you up and moving in a minute.

As soon as the background music begins to fade Miranda opens with new dialogue and a continuation of more mayhem as he deals with real life often controversial issues. The kind of realism that’s bound up with today’s rising concerns. For some it is a much needed wake up call as too many of its citizens are asleep at the wheel; and, we all need to become cognizant of these issues in order to take the appropriate measures.

Miranda for weeks has addressed the growing concerns in politics especially with Republicans and their continued desire to breed more fear to the public. A “Party” that today many feel have lost their way because they maintain a pro-business platform combined with policies that favor the wealthy at the expense of the middle class to the escalating unregulated/unfettered capitalism, which many view as a purely ideological approach to the issues. Whenever you favor corporations over the people invariably you’re going to start losing popularity.

However, before Jose engages YSL’s guest, Deon Long, in a discussion about the Republican Party, he diverts our attention to another guest, Angela LaTorre. LaTorre who had recently published a book entitled, “Incredible Dating Adventures: NEXT!” has caused quite a sensation and Jose along with co-host Haydee Ayala take a look at why the stir.

Angela candidly admits that she always had a passion for writing but her desire to write this book was due essentially to a failing marriage. Having come from her parent’s home right in to a marriage to motherhood and suddenly after many years of devotion her marriage is over. Her book is a hands-on quest of her journey, a search to finding true and lasting love though she did admit she’s no authority but upon further inspection it appears that this writer’s journey to this place in her life has left her all the wiser, it is quite an impressive read. To reach out to Angela go to incredibledatingadventures.com or invite her to be a friend on Facebook. Of course, to hear the interview in its entirety please log on to our archives.

Next, Jose engages Deon Long in conversation. Long is considered one of the state’s most influential African-American leaders. His views are more conservative than most Republicans. Nonetheless, it didn't take long before the two became involved in one lively and fiery debate, especially after the name of Rick Scott — affectionately referred to by Jose as the “King” and currently the Governor of Florida — came into the discussion.

Long, who is no stranger to YSL having appeared on YSL's airwaves before, is quite familiar with Jose’s views on some of the Republicans’ short comings nationwide; and, the current shenanigans being offered by the Florida Republican Party. Well, let’s just say this is a debate the country should be having. Also, Deon is aware that Jose is not a fan of Scott. Unfortunately, time isn't always an ally of good conversation and the interview had to be cut short. For more details, go to the archived shows and listen to the interview.

Crop Tops are HOT for 2011
April 16, 2011
The crop tops were first introduced in 2009. Yet, they didn’t quite make a big splash back then. However, if you have a few locked away in your closet it’s time to bring them out. Because, crop tops are very much a high-spring/summer 2011 look. This top is one of the hottest trends of weather and party atmosphere. It is not just about exposing ones stomach; but, about all of the stylish ways of showing a little of your toned midriff. After all, we are a body conscious society.

Crop tops can go from sportswear as a daywear trend or even as a sophisticated more refined piece that embraces a look not to be feared but embraced showing confidence in ones own skin. These pieces go from off the shoulder to the merest slit along the waistline of a dress to a look that can be quite sophisticated, or can be sported as a daywear trend to one of the hottest looks for evening wear.

Now keep in mind this look is NOT for everyone for only a few can dare to expose that much skin. Ideally it is more suited for a slimmer body type. And, if you just happen to fall within that particular body frame the crop top is sure to be your favorite piece to wear outdoor or to any festivity. Ideally they should be worn with high waist trousers or knee length shorts or skirts.

So if you dare to go bare this spring/summer this look is for you!

Lemony Chickpea Salad
Serve this fresh-tasting chickpea salad with warm, soft pita bread to soak up the olive oil dressing.

Servings: 8 • Time: 2 Hrs 20 Min plus Overnight Soaking

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons pure olive oil
1 yellow onion, quartered
2 carrots, halved
1 celery rib, halved crosswise, plus 4 small celery ribs, finely diced
1 pound dried chickpeas, soaked overnight and drained
4 rosemary sprigs and 4 thyme sprigs, tied together with string
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1 medium red onion, finely chopped
½ cup red wine vinegar
Finely shredded zest and juice of 1 lemon
2 garlic cloves, very finely chopped
1 teaspoon finely chopped rosemary
½ teaspoon dried oregano
1 ½ teaspoons finely chopped peperoncini
1 cup extra-virgin olive oil
¾ cup finely chopped flat-leaf parsley

Directions:
In a large soup pot, heat the pure olive oil. Add the quartered yellow onions, carrots and halved celery rib and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are golden, about 10 minutes. Add the drained chickpeas, the herb sprig bundle and enough water to cover by 2 inches and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat and simmer over moderately low until the chickpeas are tender, about 1 ½ hours. Add a large pinch of salt and pepper and cook the chickpeas for 10 minutes longer. Remove from the heat and cool for 15 minutes, then drain the chickpeas. Discard the herb sprigs, onion, carrots and celery.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, soak the red onion in the vinegar for 15 minutes. Drain discarding the vinegar. Return the onion to the bowl and add the diced celery, lemon zest, lemon juice, garlic, chopped rosemary, oregano and peperoncini. Add the chickpeas and olive oil; season with salt and pepper. Fold in the parsley and serve.

MAKE AHEAD
The chickpea salad can be refrigerated overnight. Add the parsley just before serving.

Top Myths about Safe Sex and Sexual Health
Websites are often riddled with errors, omissions, and outdated advice, so it’s not always easy to find the truth about common myths believed by many teenagers and perhaps some adults. So we are going to cover an abridged copy of the top sexual health misconceptions. Always remember if in doubt, consult a physician.

1. Myth: Catching an STD from a toilet seat. Sexually transmitted diseases or infections can not live outside the body for a long period of time, especially not on a cold, hard surface like a toilet seat. So the chances of you catching one from whoever used the bathroom before you are slim to none.
2. Myth: You can’t get pregnant the first time you have sex. You are just as likely to get pregnant the first time as any other. In fact, 20% of people get pregnant within a month of starting sex.
3. Myth: Women need a Pap smear when they turn 18. Previously it was recommended after a woman first has sexual intercourse. However, now pap tests aren’t recommended until women have been sexually active for three years, or until they turn 21. The reason for the change is because in most cases the human papillomavirus (HPV) clear up on their own within three years. It’s only the cases that stick around longer and will be picked up by a later pap test that are real causes for concern because they can lead to cervical cancer
4. Myth: The “morning after” pill causes an abortion. Plan B as it is know is not the same as RU-486 a pill that causes an abortion. In fact, if you take Plan B when you’re already pregnant—that is, if a fertilized egg has attached to the wall of your uterus—it won’t make a bit of difference. Plan B is NOT an abortion agent and is available to women ages 17 and up without a prescription. You just need to ask the pharmacist.
5. Myth: Birth control pills make you gain weight. A review article published in 2006 analyzed 44 previous trials and found that while some participants did gain weight during their studies, there was no evidence that their birth control was to blame. Since this can not be supported by science, perhaps one has to weigh what important is it better to gain the weight which can be controlled with diet and exercise or have an unexpected pregnancy.
6. Myth: IUD birth control is not safe for use in adolescents. Initially it was thought that these small objects inserted through the cervix and placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy and last up to 12 years may increase pelvic inflammatory disease in women under 18. However as of 2007, ACOG has said that IUDs are a safe and highly effective birth-control method in most adults as well as adolescents—a population at particular risk for unintended pregnancy.
7. Myth: If you get the HPV shot you’re safe from cervical cancer. Gardasil and Cervarix are cervical cancer vaccines that block the two types of HPV that most frequently cause cervical cancer. Also Gardasil protects against two types that cause the majority of genital warts. But, about 30% of cervical cancers will NOT be prevented by these vaccines. Therefore, your best defense is a pap test.
8. Myth: Douching is a healthy way to clean the vagina. The vagina is self-cleansing, and douching actually causes more harm than good according to the National Women’s Health Information Center. The natural bacteria found in the vagina help keep it clean and healthy, and douching can disturb that balance and spread vaginal infections into the fallopian tubes, uterus and ovaries. Additionally, it does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy. Regular washing with warm water and mild unscented soaps will help keep the outside of the vagina clean. AND, try to avoid scented tampons, pads, powders, and sprays which can increase the chance of infections.

A Poise President Announces Plan to Tackle Deficit
WASHINGTON DC (NPR) — Wednesday President Barack Obama under the increasing pressure to address the nation’s burgeoning debit, summarized a sweeping vision to cut government spending deficits by more than $4 trillion over a 12-year period through tax increases and spending cuts, phasing it in over time.

President Obama used very precise language in his speech. His words were clear-cut in denouncing the GOP’s plans for cutting spending and doing away with Medicare and Medicaid as it is today. In addition, he said that the Republicans have concluded that “we can’t afford to care for seniors and poor children; but, somehow we can afford more than $1 trillion in new tax breaks for the wealthy.”

In his delivery, the president portrayed himself as a fair and prudent leader willing to trim every area of government, which included all popular agencies and the military, as well as raising taxes only on wealthy people who have benefited greatly in recent years. This was a broad appeal to attract the independent voters who swung dramatically from Democratic candidates in 2008 to Republicans in 2010 and now would hold the key to his re-election hopes next year.

More and more Americans continue to show an increased alarm at the fast-growing federal debt. Their concerns along with conflicting emotions and beliefs are escalating on the handling of our nation's biggest social programs — Medicare and Social Security. Both parties know they face either political opportunities or risks as they tackle head on these issues. So each party is looking for phrases and slogans to best exploit their openings while minimizing their weaknesses.

This week the House Republicans revealed that they would be passing an ambitious 10-year plan that would change Medicare into a voucher program and roll Medicaid into a state block grant program, purportedly saving the government billions of dollars. Also, this bill would reduce tax rates for corporations and high earners, while ending some tax-evasion loopholes.

The Democrats feel the GOP is going too far in its proposed changes to Medicare and the expanding federal health care program for older Americans and the disabled. They believe voters will flinch at the notion of higher medical costs for the elderly, when income tax rates are plummeting for high earners. Obama ripped the Republican plan saying, "It's a vision that says America can't afford to keep the promise we've made to care for our seniors," he said. "It ends Medicare as we know it."

Meanwhile, Republicans have fine tuned their attacks on those Democrats who would suggest a tax increase of any kind. In addition, they criticize Obama's long and multilayered speech on that topic alone. Especially Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a likely presidential candidate, said Obama "doesn't get it." "The fear of higher taxes tomorrow hurts job creation today." Followed by another R-Senator, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee who said, "The real problem is that Washington spends too much, not that it taxes too little."

However, numerous bipartisan and nonpartisan analysts say it is almost impossible to solve the nation's debt problem without some combination of tax increases, spending cuts and substantial changes to Medicare and Social Security. After calling for an array of spending cuts Wednesday, Obama made the case for targeted tax increases, albeit in roundabout language.

Because Medicare and Social Security are popular with both parties, nobody wants to pay higher taxes however politicians are eager to feed the impression that solving the problem is just a matter of eliminating the waste and abuse and that tackling the deficit issue won't require tough choices." Yet, one things was certain the president would not repeat last year’s decision to extend Bush-era tax cuts, which is scheduled to expire before 2013 for families earning more than $250,000 a year. “We cannot afford $1 trillion worth of tax cuts for every millionaire and billionaire,” the president went on to say.

He renewed his call for limiting itemized deductions "for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans." Such deductions apply to money spent on mortgage interest payments, charitable gifts and other items. Obama described such goals as "reducing tax expenditures."

"I think it was very, very smart" to use such unfamiliar and indirect language, said Matt Bennett, vice president of Third Way, a Democratic-leaning think tank that praised Obama's speech. "Why not put it in those terms?" he said in an interview. "It's what the Republicans' Frank Luntz would do." Luntz is a GOP adviser known for pushing carefully crafted political terms, such as referring to levies on estates as the "death tax."

Bennett said Republicans have demonized even reasonable and necessary tax increases to the point that "it's a gigantic problem" for solving the nation's fiscal woes. If a "term of art" will blunt GOP attacks, he said, it could help Obama advance his agenda and give political cover to Republican lawmakers who believe some element of tax increases must be part of a deficit-reduction drive.

In his closest brush with an explicit call for tax increases Wednesday, Obama chastised the most insistent Republicans.

"Some will argue we shouldn't even consider ever, ever raising taxes, even if only on the wealthiest Americans," the president said. "It's just an article of faith for them. I say that at a time when the tax burden on the wealthy is at its lowest level in half a century, the most fortunate among us can afford to pay a little more."

This has definitely unleashed a barrage of GOP criticisms which will certainly echo through the fall of 2012.
