Movie Review
Real Steel — Rating: 3 STARS
The first thing that popped in my head was the action toy game ‘Rock’em Sock’em Robots’ with an all-inclusive storyline. Though fictional, I must admit everything about the film seemed real -- the fights, the relationships, to the revival in family. Even the boxing of the robots is authentic. There is an underdog and a champion and nothing like the Terminator or Transformers.

Overall, Real Steel was actually fun and endearing. It focuses on the bond shared between the father and his son estranged for a while until the robot came along. The sound effects were amazing! The instant you see those 8-foot robots entering the ring you are immediately taken back. The characters are unpretentious, which transfers to the film as honest performances. If you enjoy Raw Wrestling or WWE you will appreciate this.

UF Faculty Say Salaries Offer Incomplete Picture of their Worth
(Ocala Star-Banner) -- Depending on your point of view, Gov. Rick Scott's posting of university salary information online provides greater transparency or a distorted image. The salary information of more than 52,000 employees at the state's 11 public universities was posted on Scott's public records website Floridahasarighttoknow.com. The data show that the University of Florida has 70 of the 100 highest-paid university employees in the state, each making more than $350,000 annually. Further, seven of the top 10 earners in Florida universities work at UF, all of them for the UF College of Medicine. College Dean Dr. Michael Good, ninth on that list with a salary of nearly $543,000, said that less than 9 percent of the college's funding comes from the state. Most funding comes from the faculty's clinical practice and research and grants. "The salaries are all market-based, and they earn them through the clinical practice of medicine," Good said.

Bill Would Prohibit Debit Card Fees
(Florida Trend) -- A House Democrat disgusted by big banks and their new monthly fees for using debit cards proposed on Monday to make those charges illegal for Florida customers. It may be a dream for angry consumers, but it begs a few questions. The biggest being, can it even happen? Lake Worth Rep. Jeff Clemens says yes. His bill would prevent banks from imposing a dormancy fee or service fee on customers using debit cards. [Source: Times/Herald]

Florida’s Economy to Further Improve in 2012, Two Studies Predict
(Florida Trend) -- Florida's economy will further improve in 2012, with the state gaining more jobs, a higher personal income and home prices inching up for the first time in five years, according to two recent studies. The state will produce 2.2 percent more goods and services next year, up from the estimated 2 percent increase in 2011, according to a Wells Fargo Securities survey released this week. The Institute for Economic Competitiveness at the University of Central Florida also sees the state's economy growing, but at a slightly lower 2.1 percent in 2012.

Florida Chamber of Commerce Opposes Casinos
(Miami Herald) -- The Florida Chamber of Commerce won't be backing an expansion of casino gambling in South Florida. The Tallahassee-based organization's president Mark Wilson, in Orlando Thursday on business, reiterated the chamber's 20-year-old position against expanding casino gambling in the state. The Genting Group -- which plans a massive resort, gaming and entertainment complex where The Miami Herald now stands -- as well as other major casino operators are pushing for legislation that would allow them to expand casino gambling in South Florida.

State Economists Predict $2 Billion Budget HOLE in 2012
Florida's budget hole for next year was put officially at $2 billion Thursday in a revised forecast from state economists that also projects state budget shortfalls through 2015. With that news, the state analysts reversed the three-year optimistic outlook they had delivered to lawmakers only last month. But that was before the European debt crisis deepened, sending shockwaves through the nation's economy and darkening consumer confidence. The Sunshine State was not immune, the Senate Budget Committee was told. Read more from the Palm Beach Post and the St. Petersburg Times.

Governor Scott Wants Florida’s Jobless to Work for their Aid
(Florida Trend) --Florida Governor Rick Scott has a message for people receiving unemployment compensation in his state: if you want it, you'll have to work for it. Today Scott proposed mandatory job retraining for Floridians getting unemployment assistance. "Rather than continue to simply pay out benefits for those out of work, Florida must focus its efforts on ensuring that it can offer the most able workforce in the nation," he said in a statement unveiling his 2012 jobs and economic development agenda in Longwood, a suburb of Orlando. Scott's unemployment plan is similar to one passed in Georgia in 2003, where companies train jobless workers receiving state aid. President Barack Obama proposed a national program based on the Georgia model in his $447 billion jobs stimulus plan last month, more from Bloomberg News.

Congress Embraces Free Trade
(Miami Herald) -- Long-delayed free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea that the Obama administration says are needed to create jobs for thousands of Americans sailed through Congress Wednesday, passing with votes to spare. Florida is among the states with the most to gain from passage of the free trade pacts. The Florida Chamber of Commerce says the agreements will create more than 20,000 new jobs and generate more than $1.5 billion in international trade opportunities.

Today’s Highlights
A Return Visit by Attorney Carlton Pierce of Constitutionally Speaking and Clarissa Martinez Director of NCLA (National Council of La Raza)
By Haydee Ayala
October 22, 2011
Orlando, FL — YSL host Jose Miranda begins the hour with, “Buenas tardes Orlando, esto es Yo Soy Latino.” Then fades out the narration to soft music before reentering and announcing today’s lineup of conversation including a return visit by Carlton Pierce (co-anchor of Constitutionally Speaking); and, Clarissa Martinez, Director of NCLA (National Council of La Raza). Ms. Martinez will be speaking on Immigration, its conflicts and the harsh treatments surrounding it which for many mirrors the opinion of the majority. Largely that immigration needs to be contained. However, critics say these reforms will lead to harassment of Hispanics who have become important to the economies of hundreds of our communities. And, it will add to a breakup of their family which ultimately will result in an end of their American dream.

Miranda shifts his dialogue to cover Florida’s unemployment dipping slightly from 10.7 to 10.6 noting that the Governor of Florida a Republican is trying to take credit for it. Followed by yet another child who was brutally slashed on a school bus by a classmate asking, “Where was the bus driver when this took place? How many other children need to be subjected to this kind of bullying before something is done?” Unfortunately, more children are being lost to suicide because they have become needless victims of other youth abuses. Though the laws on anti-bullying have tightened up, what has fallen through the cracks? Have we become so desensitized that we turn a blind eye. More importantly, who is responsible? Where are the adults when all of this is happening and why are they not protecting our children who we have entrusted to their care?

As the hour slides into a break, Miranda learns that Clarissa. Martinez would not be joining us now. He expressed regret to our listeners and announced that we would make another attempt to reschedule her for a later date. Fortunately for us Attorney Carlton Pierce was in the studio and being well-read on constitutional matters could sit and talk about the immigration system.

But before doing so, Miranda asked about a question that went unanswered in the previous show but definitely calls for an explanation now. Regarding NY residents (snowbirds specifically) voting twice, here and in NY. Pierce said, “Any time you have voting and you have the opportunity to vote there is a likelihood for voting fraud because there is no check-in balance and the prospect to cheat is there.” Adding, “Most people will do the right thing but a few won’t, which as you know a few votes can shift the outcome of any election.” Today many states are considering a national voter ID in an effort to safeguard and protect the voting system. However, is this approach a means to cut down on voting fraud or an attempt to control the votes of the people since the 2012 elections are just months away? Remember, voting is a right and it is up to you to exercise that right!

With minutes remaining on the clock, Miranda raised another question about a gentleman in a wheelchair who attended a public meeting and wanted a voice. Miranda asked was it not his constitutional right to speak (“the people shall be heard”) at this meeting? Pierce responded, yes and no. You need to look at the constitution, meaning Florida’s. Though it is much like the Federal -- an organized system of fundamental principles for the government -- in this case it would be of the state and would originate from the people rather than the Legislature. Usually one appoints a leader to speak for the majority otherwise a filibuster will occur, which quite simply would prolong the debate and procedural on issues.

Then, YSL received a call from one of its listeners who alleged it was illegal immigration that caused California into a state of bankruptcy. Although it took a little persuasion, Mr. Pierce did manage to address the question. However, since the caller decided to add Arizona and several other states YSL did their own investigative work to find out what actually took place in California. In 1994 the people of California overwhelmingly voted to pass Proposition 187, which sought to limit liability for mass illegal immigration. However, under closer examination, we found that it was the state and local government under the two-term election of Republican Governor Pete Wilson that blatantly ignored the voters and continued to shell out publicly financed benefit on illegal aliens.

AND WHY did this happen because of California’s addiction to cheap labor. But the real question one should ask is WHO BENEFITED from this, only a small number of powerful interests in the state reaped the benefits while the average native-born family nearly got handed a bill of $1,200 a year.

It is true that we need a more sensible policy in place perhaps even an alternative approach fueled by humanitarian concerns to address this endemic to immigration but...will we see a resolve before the election. We strongly doubt it as this has been an ongoing conflict for well over 30 years and one that affects a large community nationwide.

Clearly, we covered much and answered many questions. We poke fun, mix in a little mayhem but ultimately deliver quality programming. See you back here next week for Talk Radio the Way It Ought To Be!

Fashion...
Winter Holiday Fashion 2011
October 22, 2011
Holidays are the best times for dressing up, whether in a big way or small. But they will always bring moments of bursting enthusiasm for the whole family. Man or woman, single or couple, child or adult, everyone overall tends to love the holidays. But knowing what to wear for each holiday can be sometimes convoluted.

If unsure, go to the mall. There are some stylish recommendations for the general season of the holiday. Use those suggestions, and your own gut to make the most informed clothing choices. Some outfits will be more robust, others more costumes, and some call for a mere nod to their arrival but as with living it is all about the little victories and getting into the spirit of the holiday as it is no longer a religious event, but an American event.

So dressing for the holidays should be a breeze. Just narrow down if you’re in a quest for an ultra-glamorous or a sexy outfit for the end-of-year party or New Year’s Eve send off.

Nonetheless, it should be one that would flatter all body shapes and would create the desired razzle-dazzle effect for that very special night. Here are a few suggestions:

The unforgettable Bubble dress -- quite stylish with a very unique creative detail -- the twist of fabric at the bottom replaces the simple hem and turns this dress into one glamorous cocktail dress. A great choice for the slender, androgynous body types, because it adds volume to the hips. Keep the length at the knee or just below and pick a soft fabric that will swish and swirl around you. Match it with a pair of high heels to make your legs longer like stilettos.

Hmm! The Strapless Dress will definitely shift the attention to your décolletage providing you wish to make a real statement with your look. Strapless dresses are perfect for those who desire the focus to be on their upper body masking the eventual disproportions of the legs and hips. Of course, anyone who wishes to flash their streamlined silhouette can opt for the silky soft designs. However, if you are looking for fine angles and a more architectural go for organza and other catchy materials.

Maxi dresses are a great holiday choice because it is meant to be fun and flowing, especially if the fabric is silk, satin or chiffon. It doesn’t matter if it is simple or sophisticated, or even embellished. These large dresses are the greatest pick because they cheat visually and make your shape look slimmer and longer making you the hit at the soiree. However, limit your accessories, except for a gorgeous cocktail ring that’s a must.

Now with the Empire Waist dress -- those dresses with raised waistlines that fall right below the bust line -- these can be great for hiding a thicker middle or showing off a stunning cleavage. Unfortunately, wearing a poorly fitting empire dress can draw attention in a negative way, making you look pregnant. So make sure you’re getting the size that fits you perfectly.

The One-Shoulder Dress are a real fan of the latest lady-like style trends because it will surely tame your craving for the ultra-feminine outfit and can be found in materials like chiffon, silk or organza for a drop-dead-gorgeous look. These dresses have the power to create the illusion of a perfectly proportionate silhouette.

There are two other styles which I would like to include like the Lace Dress and the V-Neck Dress. Both are great party dresses. Though the Lace Dress will echo a more glamorous and Art deco allure for the gal who is eager to show off their style-consciousness or refined taste while flashing some skin and their best assets. And, the V-neck Dress is the ultimate solution if you wish to narrow your shoulders and create a slimming illusion. Choose classy designs if you are a fan of the old time Hollywood chic. However, the V-neck dress will flatter both those who have a more generous décolletage as well as those who have smaller breasts. The key with this style is the depth of the cut.

Yankees Scouted Yu Darvish
(NBC) -- New York Yankees have scouted Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish and have not dismissed the idea of pursuing the 25-year-old if he goes through the posting process required for entry into Major League Baseball. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told ESPNNewYork.com on Thursday that the team scouted Darvish during the 2011 season, in which he went 18-6 with a 1.44 ERA for the Nippon Ham Fighters. "We scout Japanese baseball the same way we scout the American League and the National League," Cashman said. "We had a wave of scouts there all season.” Cashman refused to say whether the Yankees would be interested in bidding on Darvish, which likely would cost upward of $100 million with the posting fee.

Basketball
Owners of Teams with Great Rosters are Eager for Season to Begin
(NBC) -- Even as the talks suffered their latest breakdown Thursday, two league sources said that Arison has been the most active owner in trying to push through a deal even as his peers balk at the players’ demands. In his frustration Thursday night NBA Players Association head Billy Hunter said he felt there was a divide between big market and small market owners. He said that some big-market owners were ready end the lockout. According to Windhorst, there have been some reports that Lakers owner Jerry Buss and Knicks owner Jim Dolan have been “aggressively pushing” for reform, but almost everyone seems to agree that Arison is not pleased about having a super-team sitting around and not playing basketball with three stars missing a year of their prime and a year of their contracts with the Heat. Arison’s frustration with the lack of a deal is understandable, but it’s unlikely that the rest of the league’s owners are going to back off of their demands out of sympathy for the Heat.

Polamalu Fined $10,000 for using Cell Phone During Game
(NBC) -- On Sunday, Steelers safety Troy Polamalu was spotted using a cell phone on the sidelines after leaving the game against the Jaguars with concussion-like symptoms. He has now gotten the bill. Per multiple reports, the NFL has fined Polamalu $10,000. On Tuesday coach Mike Tomlin said he didn’t believe Polamalu would be fined since Polamalu was calling his wife to tell her that he was fine. “Fine” is the key word.

Health...
Fibromyalgia
October 22, 2011
Fibromyalgia is a common syndrome in which a person has long-term, body-wide pain and tenderness in the joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues; plus, it has also been linked to fatigue, sleep problems, headaches, depression, and anxiety. This syndrome is most common among women aged 20 to 50 and is a long-term disorder. Sometimes, the symptoms improve. Other times, the pain may get worse and continue for months or years.

The actual cause is unknown but there may be triggers that can bring on fibromyalgia like:
• Physical or emotional trauma
• Abnormal pain response - areas in the brain that are responsible for pain may react differently in fibromyalgia patients
• Sleep disturbances
• Infection, such as a virus, although none has been identified

Also, the following conditions may be seen with fibromyalgia or mimic its symptoms:
• Chronic neck or back pain
• Chronic fatigue syndrome
• Depression
• Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
• Lyme disease
• Sleep disorders

However, one thing is certain. Pain is the main symptom of fibromyalgia and may be mild to severe.
• Painful areas are called tender points. Tender points are found in the soft tissue on the back of the neck, shoulders, chest, lower back, hips, shins, elbows, and knees. The pain then spreads out from these areas.
• The pain may feel like a deep ache, or a shooting, burning pain.
• The joints are not affected, although the pain may feel like it is coming from the joints.

People with fibromyalgia tend to wake up with body aches and stiffness. For some patients, pain improves during the day and gets worse at night. Some patients have pain all day long. Pain may get worse with activity, cold or damp weather, anxiety, and stress. Fatigue, depressed mood, and sleep problems are seen in almost all patients with fibromyalgia. Many say that they can't get to sleep or stay asleep, and they feel tired when they wake up.

Other symptoms of fibromyalgia may include:
• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
• Memory and concentration problems
• Numbness and tingling in hands and feet
• Palpitations
• Reduced ability to exercise
• Tension or migraine headaches

To be diagnosed with fibromyalgia, you must have had at least 3 months of widespread pain, and pain and tenderness in at least 11 of 18 areas, including
• Arms (elbows)
• Buttocks
• Chest
• Knees
• Lower back
• Neck
• Rib cage
• Shoulders
• Thighs

Blood and urine tests are usually normal. However, tests may be done to rule out other conditions that may have similar symptoms.

Treatment: The goal of treatment is to help relieve pain and other symptoms, and to help a person cope with the symptoms.
The first type of treatment may involve:
• Physical therapy
• Exercise and fitness program
• Stress-relief methods, including light massage and relaxation techniques

If these treatments do not work, your doctor may prescribe an antidepressant or muscle relaxant. The goal of medication is to improve sleep and pain tolerance. Medicine should be used along with exercise and behavior therapy. Duloxetine (Cymbalta), pregabalin (Lyrica), and milnacipran (Savella) are medications that are approved specifically for treating fibromyalgia.

However, many other drugs are also used to treat the condition, including:
• Anti-seizure drugs
• Other antidepressants
• Muscle relaxants
• Pain relievers
• Sleeping aids

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is an important part of treatment. This therapy helps you learn how to:
• Deal with negative thoughts
• Keep a diary of pain and symptoms
• Recognize what makes your symptoms worse
• Seek out enjoyable activities
• Set limits

Support groups may also be helpful. Other recommendations include:
• Eat a well-balanced diet
• Avoid caffeine
• Practice good sleep routines to improve quality of sleep
• Acupressure and acupuncture

Severe cases of fibromyalgia may require a referral to a pain clinic. If you are experiencing these symptoms, call your health-care provider.

President Obama Threatens Appropriators With Veto
October 22, 2011
The Obama administration on Thursday told House and Senate appropriators that the president will veto any 2012 spending bills that contain provisions blocking top administration priorities like healthcare and financial reforms.

Revamping its semi-dormant mantra of “winning the future,” the White House also threatened a veto if the final version of spending bills cuts funding too much or fails to fund investments in education, innovation or infrastructure.

“If the President is presented with a bill that undermines critical domestic priorities or national security through funding levels or language restrictions, contains earmarks or fails to make tough choices to cut where needed while maintaining what we need to spur long-term job creation and with the future, the President will veto the bill,” White House budget director Jack Lew said in a letter to the chairmen and ranking members of the appropriations committees.

The letter contains a five-page list of top administration priorities. Not surprisingly, the administration sides with priorities of the 12 bills produced by Senate Democrats over those produced by the House GOP. Both chambers must reconcile their versions to get the bills to the president's desk.

The administration strongly opposes policy riders that “undermine” the Affordable Care Act; the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill; health, safety and worker protections; environmental protections; and those that “abandon settled approaches to divisive social issues.” The last reference appears to refer to riders such as one in the House Labor appropriations bill defunding Planned Parenthood over its abortion services.

“The swift passage of appropriations legislation should not be jeopardized by ideological provisions that have no place in funding legislation,” Lew writes. He noted that in the April deal on 2011 spending most riders were taken off the table. In the end, the only rider included was one stopping the District of Columbia from funding abortions.

Lew urged Congress to avoid further stopgap funding measures and complete work on the 12 annual appropriations bills. The government is running on a temporary spending bill until Nov. 18, and House Republicans and Senate Democrats are slowly moving toward a conference committee on the 2012 measures.

Lew’s letter comments that the summer debt-ceiling agreement set out an overall spending level of $7 billion lower 2011’s. He says “cutting already-tight discretionary program levels even further would be a serious mistake.”

House Republican leaders have decided to stick to the debt-ceiling agreement, but about 50 conservative members of the caucus have been pushing for more cuts. The rift means that House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) will likely have to rely on Democratic help to get the appropriations bills through the chamber.
