Movie Review
Dolphin Tale — Rating: 4 STARS
Dolphin Tale is one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time. What made this film perfect was that it was inspired by an actual event -- a dolphin beached on the sands because its tail is twisted in the ropes of a lobster trap and the young boy, Sawyer, who bonds with that dolphin.

Though Dolphin Tail contains some lightly fictionalized events of the brave Florida dolphin name Winter, it also shows the deep connection between the two. The boy who helps save the dolphin who is wounded and loses its tail then gets a prosthetic one and the dolphin who helps the boy get over his shyness.

Whether Winter is believable or not, the film is charming as it is heartwarming and will fascinate any kid who loves nature or is just into dolphins.

President Obama Allowing States to Opt Out of Education Reform Requirements
(CNN) – President Obama says he will grant waivers from “No Child Left Behind” requirements. State will be granted exemptions in exchange for certain commitments. “No Child Left Behind”: was signed into law by President George W. Bush a decade ago." The purpose is not to give states and districts a reprieve from accountability, but rather to unleash energy to improve our schools at the local level," Obama said in a separate statement released by the White House.

Scott needs to Look at What We Already Have
(Orlando Sentinel) -- Gov. Rick Scott has slashed university funding, vetoed money for the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and emphasizes a very outmoded method for building businesses in Florida -- cold calling companies to lure them here. None of that bodes well for the biotechnology sector that Florida spent $1.5 billion to bring to the state during the past seven years. Scripps Florida in Jupiter and Orlando's Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute were the largest recipients. Whether or not Scott agrees with the big down payments on the industry that Gov. Jeb Bush started and Gov. Charlie Crist continued, the investment can't be taken back now. To not follow up on it would be tantamount to letting it go to waste.

How Disney World has Shaped Florida for 40 Years
(Tampa Tribune) -- It would take a Disney-sized imagination to ponder what Orlando and Florida would be like if that first shovel of dirt hadn't been turned to build the Magic Kingdom. As the park marks its 40th year in business on Oct. 1, it maintains its spot as the most popular theme park in the world, with an estimated 17 million visitors who spill into nearby Orlando and use it as an entry point for exploring the rest of the peninsula. "You're talking about the 500-pound gorilla in terms of tourism," said Mark Bonn, a professor at Florida State University's College of Business and president of Bonn Marketing Research. "Historically, we were promoted as a sun and sand and ski destination," Bonn said. "That all changed in a hurry when the Magic Kingdom opened."

Florida is Home to the Second-Most MASS LAYOFFS in the Nation
For the second month in a row, Florida had more mass layoffs than every other state but California, according to statistics released Thursday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. According to the numbers from the BLS, Florida accounted for 78 of the nation's 961 mass layoffs in August and 147 of the 2,176 layoffs nationwide in July. Florida's mass layoffs -- which count as one employer laying off at least 50 workers -- was also the third-highest in the country in June and again the second-highest in the nation in May, according to the BLS. 35 bodies found in Mexico Roadway during Rush Hour Tuesday
(CNN) -- The bodies were found near a shopping mall in Veracruz. The state prosecutor says trucks carrying the bodies were abandoned in rush-hour traffic. Seven of the dead had been identified by Tuesday evening. Police in the eastern state found two trucks carrying the bodies near a shopping mall in the municipality of Boca del Rio, Attorney General Reynaldo Escobar Perez told CNNMexico.com. A government database indicated that they had criminal backgrounds including extortion, homicide and drug trafficking, he said.

Many Florida workers lack Health Insurance
(Tampa Tribune) – A quarter of Florida’s working adults – including those with full-time jobs – had no health insurance in 2010, according to figures released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. Florida ranked 49th among the states in terms of the percentage of its workers with employer-funded health insurance, falling between Texas and New Mexico and just ahead of Puerto Rico. The Census figures reinforced the strong link between having a job and having health insurance. More than three-quarters of workers who had insurance got it through their employers, the Census reported. But having a job is no guarantee. Statewide, about 30 percent of full-time workers in Florida lacked employer-funded insurance. For part-time workers, the rate was closer to 60 percent.

Today’s Highlights
In the Studio with Jesse Cutler...and...
On the Local Front with Michael Redman and Zoraida Rios-Andino

By Haydee Ayala
September 24, 2011
Orlando, FL — YSL host Jose Miranda took to the microphone prepared to discuss two very important issues. Both of which will have a profound effect on how Florida will deal with foreclosures should the judicial system be removed from the process and the redistricting concerns. What impact will it have on the Hispanic community vote? These points are very alarming and more importantly will it encroach on everyone in the community.

Although Miranda telephoned House Representatives Dean Cannon (R) who was unreachable for comment on his position on the Florida Foreclosure Fraud Forgiveness Act of 2012 along with Darren Soto (D), he forged ahead and asked Michael Redman what impact if any will this bill have on Florida?

Redman stressed if bill passes there will be NO more defense on foreclosure in Florida. Foreclosure will be taken out of the court system giving banks the authority to foreclose for whatever reason. It could be as simple as an absence of one or more mortgage payments, etc. This maneuver is an effort to get the dead beat families out and the more productive families in even if the bank is at fault.

Redman then goes on to explain reverse redlining. A process which was encouraged during the housing boom and allowed lenders to target minority consumers or the elderly as not to deny them loans when they consciously knew that these individuals could not afford the mortgage. This pretty much is a predatory lending tactic. As soon as the borrower defaults the lender feels no remorse and tries to repossess the property. Bottom line, they could care less if they got repaid because it wasn’t their monies to begin with.

Even our esteem Governor Scott is all for taking the judicial system out of the loop on foreclosures. He believes it will encourage more business in Florida. Is this a joke? In order to stop the Florida Foreclosure Fraud Forgiveness Act of 2012 this message need to be communicated endlessly. To reach out to Michael Redman you can call at 561-880-LIES or drop him a note at MICHAEL@4CLOSUREFRAUD.ORG.

Then the conversation shifted to Proposal E on Redistricting. A hot button issue directed at undermining the Hispanic vote. YSL guest Zorida Rios-Andino jumps right in to discuss the urgency of the Hispanic community to be counted, speaking of last week’s meeting having been a torturous procedure due to the map making process. She reminded us that the next and last meeting is Wednesday (9/28) at 6:00 at the Orange County Administration Building, in the BCC Chambers, 201 South Rosalind Avenue, Orlando, Florida 32801.

The need for attendance is crucial. It is imperative that we unite and coordinate our action as this will have a caustic impact on Hispanics. How? You will not have a voice; and, you’ll be overlooked when federal monies are allocated. All of which will affect schools, teachers, our children basically how we as a community are represented in Tallahassee. We can not wait another 10 years for representation, says Rios-Andino. Puerto Rican Hispanics represent a large number of Florida’s population and pay high taxes. The time to rumble is now. So please try to get there at 4:00 in support of those who will be speaking at the press conference.

Also, they have recently organized a Central Florida Chapter of the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights (NCPRR). NCPRR is the largest Puerto Rican civil and human rights organization in the United States. On October 7-9 there planning a meeting in Miami Florida which is opened to everyone. For more details contact Ms. Rios-Andino either on Facebook or by phone at 321-235-1506.

With only minutes remaining Miranda gives a warm welcome to Jesse Cutler who had been sitting in the studio patiently waiting for his cue. Cutler who started his career at age 12 continues to be on top of his game. He’s a guitarist, Grammy Award Winning Musician and Composer, actor who starred in the original production of Godspell in New York City in the early 70s, director, producer and added to his illustrious career, he’s also a philosopher, author of Starlust and entrepreneur.

Cutler is no stranger to the world of entertainment but what makes him unique is his easy going demeanor. It was wonderful having him on the show and this editorial does not do him justice as he is engaging, interesting and charming. Unfortunately, our time with Mr. Cutler was limited but he can be reached at 407-852-8855 or at JesseCutler.com. However, to truly appreciate the entire exchange, do listen to the show.

In closing we would like to say that the time to stand united is now. To change laws and stop politicians who are no more than parasites dictating how our votes should be counted while they ignore our concerns and live off the sweat of our brows. Public service was never intended to be a career. We need to change how long our senators, congressional representatives and all other elected officials stay in office, limiting them to one term in office. Maybe then, they will keep their campaign promises and work for the people who elected them and not for themselves.

If you would like to listen to the program go to our archived shows or if you prefer to see the show as it was broadcast live go to ustreamtv.com and enter yslyosoylatino then click on Saturday’s show. See you next week for another entertaining hour!

Hot! Shoe Trends for Fall/Winter 2011-2012
September 24, 2011
This fall one can expect that the shoe trends are as diverse as ones own personality. Thereby making it more inviting for women to find something as unique as they are. The trendiest tones for the season are: black, white (yes white), stone, metallic, beige, burgundy, dark blue, chocolate, deep violet, khaki and red. The bright hues will be scarce since the preferred colors during autumn and winter happen to be the darker shades.

As for the materials that will prevail in this season’s shoe collections, those will include: leather, patent and reptile skins, suede and satin. There is also going to be a focus on lace and occasional fur. Another thing worth mentioning before we start listing the trendiest shoes is that both the pike and round toes will continue to be quite popular. What does this mean? Only that you can stick to your favorite shape of shoe and still be very fashionable.

However, reptile leather is going to be very trendy this fall into winter as designers are moving away from snake skin and crocodile leather (though they are still stylish). Next are the patent leather style shoes. This type of leather might be impractical but it is still a gorgeous look.

Then there’s the magic of suede on shoes. Not only is this material luxurious but many of the styles are hot and they are almost in every fashion season judging by the thousands of different shoe designs made of this material. Suede is very trendy and it comes in a variety of colors.

Another favorite is the satin shoe. Satin shoes are perfect for that special occasion besides being, in my view, the best to adding the final touches to that distinctive dress. It is one shoe that is totally chic. Of course, there are the platforms and wedges which are also popular, except that the wedge shoe has transformed from the previous season, and the designs, are more modest and elegant.

Lacing, like the wedge trend, has been brought back by designers with a slight transformation of the style. Lacing, which used to be rather delicate and feminine during spring, has become sexier and more aggressive for fall and winter. Even buckles are once again making a comeback but in a larger diversity. However, fashion does tend to repeat itself.

Then there’s the Chunky heels, a shoe that tends to appear more during the colder seasons. The main reason is that they provide comfort. However, they will never be as stylish and sexy as the stilettos. Stilettos are by far a favorite of all women because they give the illusion of long legs, emphasize the shape, and almost always make women of every size feel feminine, sexy and in control. And, what gal doesn’t want to look sexy, leaner, beautiful, and confident perhaps even a tad provocative while wearing these sleek shoes, especially the high stiletto boots.

Now as Niecy Nash would say, “Get ta steppin!”

Recipe...
Beef Stew in Red Wine Sauce
For many Americans, the quintessential French stew is boeuf bourguignon -- beef cooked in Burgundy red wine. The stew, featured regularly at Jacques Pépin's mother's restaurant, was made from tougher, cheaper cuts of beef, which had to be braised a long time to get tender and to stay moist.
For this beef stew, Jacques uses a special piece of the shoulder called the flatiron steak. This long, narrow piece is extremely lean, tender and moist, and it makes an ideal stew. He does not use stock, demiglace or even water. He makes his stew strictly with a robust red wine. This rich, winey beef stew is always a hit with his chef friends.

Servings: 4 • Time: 2 HRS 40 MINS

Ingredients:
2 pounds beef from the flatiron part of the shoulder
1 tablespoon butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt
Pepper
1 cup finely chopped onion
1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic
1 tablespoon flour
1 bottle of red wine
2 bay leaves
1 sprig fresh thyme
15 cipollini or pearl onions
15 cremini mushrooms
15 baby carrots
5-ounce piece of pancetta
¼ cup water
Dash of sugar
Chopped fresh parsley

Directions:
Buy about 2 pounds of beef from the flatiron part of the shoulder. Remove the skin or sinew from the top. Alternatively, use lean beef chuck in the same manner. Cut the meat into 8 pieces.

Preheat the oven to 350°. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter with 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a cast-iron pot that is attractive enough for the table. Arrange the meat in one layer in the pot, and season it with salt and pepper. Cook on top of the stove over high heat for about 8 minutes, browning the meat on all sides.

Add 1 cup of finely chopped onion and 1 tablespoon of finely chopped garlic. Cook over moderate heat for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add 1 tablespoon of flour. Mix in well so that the flour doesn't form lumps. Stir in 1 bottle of red wine. Add 2 bay leaves, a sprig of fresh thyme, salt and pepper and bring to a boil. Stir well and cover.

Place the pot in the oven and continue to cook for about 1 1/2 hours; the meat should be soft and tender and the liquid properly reduced. The recipe can be prepared to this point up to a day ahead.

For the garnishes, peel 15 cipolini or pearl onions, wash 15 cremini mushrooms and peel 15 baby carrots. For the lardons, you will need one 5-ounce piece of pancetta. Bring the pancetta and 2 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan and simmer for about 30 minutes; drain. Cut the pancetta into 1/2-inch slices and then cut the slices into 1-inch-wide lardons.

Combine the onions, mushrooms, carrots and pancetta in a skillet with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1/4 cup of water and a good dash each of sugar, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil and simmer, covered, for about 15 minutes; at this point, there should be practically no water left. Uncover and cook over high heat, sautéing the vegetables until nicely browned on all sides, about 4 minutes.

To serve, mix some of the vegetables and lardons into the stew and sprinkle the rest on top as a garnish. Add a little chopped fresh parsley and serve.

Lifestyle Tips for a Urinary Tract Infection
September 24, 2011
1. Urinary tract infection prevention with cranberry juice
Your mother was right — cranberry juice really does help prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Of the 149 women who participated in a recent medical study, those who drank a daily glass of cranberry juice (made from concentrate) reduced their risk for recurrent UTI by 20 percent. The juice helps to deposit extra vitamin C in urine, creating an acidic environment that thwarts the growth and "stick-ability" of UTI-causing bacteria, researchers said.

2. How to avoid urinary tract infections
To prevent your next urinary tract infection, be sure to drink the equivalent of at least eight glasses of fluid throughout the day; it encourages frequent urination, which flushes bacteria from the bladder. And avoid substances such as alcohol and caffeine, which can irritate the bladder.

3. UTIs may be harmful to unborn babies
If you develop a urinary tract infection (UTI) while pregnant, be sure to take medication exactly as directed by your health care professional. Pregnant women who fail to properly treat their UTI incur a higher risk of miscarriage or premature labor.

4. Self-help for urinary tract infections
Although your health care professional can recommend a variety of drugs to relieve the pain of a urinary tract infection (UTI), there are things you can do on your own. Draping a heating pad over your lower pelvic area can help, as can drinking plenty of water to help flush bacteria out of the urinary tract. Also, try to avoid coffee, alcohol and spicy foods while suffering with a UTI.

Scott Brags about Laying-Off 15,000 Government Workers after Decrying Florida’s High Unemployment
September 24, 2011
The GOP presidential candidates and other prominent conservatives spoke today at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Florida. This afternoon, Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) took to the stage to talk about “successes” in his state, including decreasing the state’s unemployment rate to 10.7 percent -- which he noted is still well above the national average.

IN THE NEXT SENTENCE, though, Scott touted another “success” -- laying off 15,000 public sector workers, which of course increased the unemployment rolls in his state. Scott then declared, “Government can’t create jobs”:

SCOTT: We’ve had plenty of success so far. Not enough…In Florida, unemployment rate’s gone from 12 percent down to 10.7. We’re still above the national average, but we’ve generated 87,200 private sector jobs -- private sector! And we have 15,000 less government jobs in the state of Florida. [Applause] Government doesn’t create jobs.

Scott’s reminder that he laid of thousands of Floridians drew big applause from the conservative crowd. At least 600,000 government workers have lost their jobs since the recession began, but Republicans nevertheless keep scapegoating public employees who have shouldered more than their fair share of economic pain.

In fact, massive job losses in the public sector are one of the main factors keeping national unemployment so high. In August, a gain of 17,000 private sector jobs was completely negated by 17,000 public sector job losses. According to David Leonhardt, if state and local governments had continued to hire at their previous pace, they would have added half a million jobs to the economy. In other words, government austerity over the past two years “has cost the economy about one million jobs.”
