Contagion — Rating: 4 STARS
Contagion was a bit unsettling because it had a sense of reality. The film deals with a worldwide pandemic and from the beginning it starts with its first victim, Beth (Gwyneth Paltrow) who returns from a business trip overseas and is stricken with this deadly virus.

What I found especially interesting is the way the director managed to unearth the dread. Showing us in several sequences just how easy it is to pass a deadly organism to another simply by the many things we touch. Like our faces, noses, mouths, even shaking someone’s hand, all of which will leave you with a real creepy feeling because this is not a typical cold but something more lethal.

Though this movie is potent and well-paced, Contagion only has a few performances that actually inspire. Nonetheless, the film’s cast does pull their weight from Matt Damon who is brilliant as Mitch, Beth (Gwyneth Paltrow) who starts the movie as its first victim and is flawless in her performance, Jennifer Ehle who was credible as the scientist looking for a vaccine even Laurence Fishburne offered some of the film’s best one-liners. If you are looking for a movie that will make you jumpy, maybe even send a chill down your spine, this film will certainly do the trick.

9/11 Threat from al Qaeda Operative Intercepted, Official Says
Washington (CNN) — American spy networks have intercepted communications from an al Qaeda operative in Pakistan indicating plans for a terrorist strike in New York or Washington, according to a senior U.S. official. Two of the individuals suspected in the threat are believed to be U.S. citizens. Gov. Andrew Cuomo directs state police to help with security at major transport hubs. No other corroborating evidence of an attack has been uncovered, official says. But the information indicates the plan—thought to involve a vehicle-borne explosive device—is meant to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Mississippi Voters can decide ‘Personhood’ of the Unborn, Court Rules
(CNN) — Voters in Mississippi will be given a chance to decide on November 8 whether life begins at conception, a controversial abortion-related ballot initiative that the state’s highest court has refused to block. The decision was a rejection of a lawsuit filed by the ACLU and abortion-rights groups. The 7-2 ruling said those groups had not met the legal burden required to restrict the right of citizens to amend the state constitution. The measure would probably halt abortion in the state.

U.S. Choking Terror Funding Sources since 9/11
(CNN) Ten years after the September 11 attacks, al Qaeda’s ability to finance such a large and sophisticated operation has been significantly diminished, but new challenges to choke off funds for further attacks continue, the Treasury Department said.

“Al Qaeda struggles to secure steady financing. It can no longer rely on a thick Rolodex and a simple bank transfer," Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said at a symposium Thursday to highlight the work of the Treasury Department's Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. The death of Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda's most effective advocate for funding, dealt a blow to the group, Geithner said, "but al Qaeda is a determined and sophisticated organization, and it will continue to find ways to access funding. "

To be sure, the Treasury Department said it has been able to curtail al Qaeda's financing ability through arrest, prosecution and targeted sanctions aimed at its key leadership. On Wednesday, the department announced sanctions against al Qaeda's propaganda chief and two other senior leaders in a move that cuts them off from the U.S. financial system and freezes any of their holdings under U.S. jurisdiction. Treasury said it also has worked extensively with the governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan to build capabilities in their financial sectors to disrupt and dismantle illicit financial networks.

Mildred Fernandez Trail to start on Halloween
Orlando (Orlando Sentinel) — The public-corruption trial of former Orange County commissioner Mildred Fernandez is set to start with jury selection on Halloween. Assistant State Attorney Greg Tynan and defense attorney Gus Padron appeared for a case management conference this morning with Orange Circuit Judge C. Jeffery Arnold. Arnold has blocked off two weeks for the trial, starting Oct. 31. Both Tynan and Padron said it shouldn't take more than a day-and-a-half to select a jury in the case, which received significant media coverage when it surfaced in 2010. Fernandez who is charged with a series of corruption-related crimes, including racketeering counts, bribery, unlawful compensation for official behavior and accepting illegal campaign contributions did not attend the brief conference today.

Teen Sentenced for Molestation, Father awaits Trail
Sanford (Orlando Sentinel) — Matthew Jeremy Torres (19) was sentenced as a youthful offender by a circuit judge in Orlando to four years in prison on Thursday, after Torres entered a no-contest plea to four counts of lewd or lascivious molestation, records state. The girl told Orange County deputies that Matthew had molested her several times and once as his father (Fernando Torres) watched. Fernando Torres is still awaiting trial.

Orlando — So often we are reminded of all those who have given their all in defense of this great country, but what about the silent one who were not expecting war in their backyard and lost their lives when an attack was launched on U.S. soil on the morning of 9/11. As many witnessed the act of terrorism of two passenger jets slamming into the buildings either from their television sets or the seemingly endless parade of people who watched from their windows in horror the planes crashing into the buildings, while those on the ground came together rushing in to help without thought to their own personal safety. Meanwhile, many less fortunate perished as a direct assault from the crash.

Events like that are not easily forgotten, even for the survivors of this fatal day, and as we approach the 10th anniversary of 9/11 we are quickly reminded of all the heroes (fallen and living) who played a vital role the day American came under Attack. YSL host Jose Miranda took a moment to talk openly about it. Reminding us that America became a nation that day united as a people and we should always remember and honor all those Americans who gave their lives heroically on that fatal day 10 years ago.

Then the talk inside of the studio shifted. Miranda put aside the program to speak about a man who introduced him to radio. A man who was referred to as ‘The Evangelist,’ even ‘The Hitman’ but most will remember him for his involvement with the ACLU, George Crossley. Joining YSL host Miranda and Ayala were John Hamilton, T. J. McCarthy IV, and Steve Schwartz. Crossley passed away just before his 6 p.m. radio show on Wednesday September 8th. Those who knew him can say he was a gentle giant who roared loudly, gave big bear hugs, and was a hell raiser when there was an injustice of any sort but he was also a radio host for many years. Who, over the years, had amassed a vast following.

George Crossley lived his life to the fullest touching many along the way. He’s gone but he left us while doing what he loved most, radio. Today a few former members of the People Power Hour including YSL talk show host Jose Miranda took this hour to reflect on the 1st anniversary of the passing of a colleague.

The show was animated and energized. It brought back many fond remembrances not only to those who worked closely with him but to his many fans as well.

Because there are so many styles, fabrics, and finishes all you have to do is coordinate it with your outfit or accessories. Men and women can wear sport Fedora hat. For men there are wide brim Fedora hats that can be worn with suits and more casual outfits. Women try to sport it with a menswear trend like tuxedos and other men style clothes.

Vintage Hats
This is one of the hottest trends since the 60s, and continuing strong for this season and next. These tiny hats come in various shades and prints and can be easily worn with modernized 60′s-inspired designer wear or with evening gowns and furs in a flapper-style. (ESPN NBA) — Phoenix Suns president and CEO Rick Welts submitted his resignation unexpected Friday after nine years of running the club’s business side, The Arizona Republic reports. Welts told the newspaper that "The most important thing for me is to get my personal and professional lives better aligned. They've probably never been aligned. I'm 58 years old and it's time to do that." His reason for leaving the Suns was not because of the job, but because his partner lives in Sacramento and has joint custody of two children there. Welts is believe to the be the first man in a prominent position in men’s sports who is openly gay.

Roast Pork Shoulder with Fennel and Potatoes

This is one meal that’s sure to wet your whistle, Porchetta. A memorable dish that can be found at weekly markets in the country towns around Foligno — whole roasted young pigs seasoned with fiore di finocchio (Umbrian wild fennel pollen) — and sold either sliced and stuffed into a panini (small round buns) for a snack or bought by the kilo to take home for lunch. Instead of a whole pig, Salvatore Denaro slow-roasts pork shoulder with similar seasonings (pork belly is equally delicious when roasted for 1 hour at 400 degrees).

Pairing Suggestion:
The intense and tannic Sagrantino grape variety is an ideal match for this juicy substantial pork road since the tannins help cut through fat.

Servings: 6 • Time: 4 HRS 30 MINS

Ingredients:
¼ cup fennel pollen or ground fennel seeds
1 ½ tablespoons kosher salt
1 ½ tablespoons freshly ground pepper
One 6- to 7-pound, bond-in pork shoulder, skin removed and thick layer of fat scored
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
3 pounds medium Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and quartered
1 cup dry white whine

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 325°. In a small bowl, mix the fennel, salt and pepper. Coat the pork all over with the spice mixture and set it in a large roasting pan, fat side up. Pour the olive oil around the pork. Roll the potatoes in the oil to coat and arrange them cut sides down. Roast until the pork is very tender and the potatoes are browned on the bottom, about 3 hours.

Transfer the roasted potatoes to an ovenproof serving bowl. Pour the white wine into the pan around the pork and continue to roast the pork for 1 hour longer, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the thickest part registers 185°.

Let the pork rest for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, reheat the potatoes in the oven. Carve the pork into thick slices and serve on a platter with the potatoes.

Three Ways to Prevent Heartburn Flare-Ups

More than 60 million Americans experience heartburn from time to time. It could be your diet, your workout, or your sleep routine.

Change the way you eat: If spicy, fatty, or dairy-heavy foods are on the daily menu, lighten up! An overly full stomach combined with greasy or highly spiced food is a potential recipe for reflux. Having healthy, moderately portioned meals is one of the best ways to dodge heartburn. Watch out for common triggers like chocolate, onions, garlic, citrus fruit, and tomatoes. Choose water instead of caffeinated or carbonated beverages, and avoid alcohol.

Wait at least an hour before working out: Exercising within an hour of eating could worsen the situation. Wait a while before hitting the gym, and when you do, try to keep high-impact workouts like jogging, aerobics, and rope jumping to a minimum. As a general rule, exercises that require bouncing or jumping will jostle stomach contents, possibly causing a wayward flow of acid. Go easy on heavy weight lifting, sit-ups, and stomach crunches that tense the stomach muscles, and always wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that don't restrict the abdominal region.

Don't lie down: Because the combination of late-night eating and lying down is a risky one for those suffering from heartburn, it's especially important to eat dinner at a sensible hour and wait a while before you go to sleep. When bedtime beckons, you'll find that the laws of gravity never rest, even when you do, and nighttime heartburn can often be blamed on food and acid flowing backward into the esophagus while you're lying down. If reflux makes you restless, try sleeping with your head slightly raised or securing a wedge-shaped pillow underneath your mattress.

The American Job Act

To create more jobs now, the President is sending Congress the American Jobs Act – a set of ideas supported by both Democrats and Republicans that Congress must pass right away. The purpose of the American Jobs Act is simple: put more people back to work and put more money in the pockets of working Americans. Here’s how:

• First, it provides a tax cut for small businesses, not big corporations, to help them hire and expand now, and provides an additional tax cut to any business that hires or increases wages.
• Second, it puts more people back to work, including up to 280,000 teachers laid off by state-budget cuts, first responders and veterans coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan, and construction workers repairing crumbling bridges, roads and more than 35,000 public schools, with projects chosen by need and impact, not earmarks and politics. And, it expands job opportunities for hundreds of thousands of low-income youth and adults through a new Pathways Back to Work Fund that supports summer and year round jobs for youth; innovative new job training programs to connect low-income workers to jobs quickly; and successful programs to encourage employers to bring on disadvantaged workers.
• Third, it helps out-of-work Americans by extending unemployment benefits to help them support their families while looking for work and reforming the system with training programs that build real skills, connect to real jobs and help the long-term unemployed. It bans employers from discriminating against the unemployed when hiring, and provides a new tax credit to employers hiring workers who have been out of a job for over 6 months.
• Fourth, it puts more money in the pockets of working and middle class Americans by cutting in half the payroll tax that comes out of every worker's paycheck, saving families an average of $1,500 a year’ and taking executive action to remove the barriers that exist in the current federal refinancing program (HARP) to help more Americans refinance their mortgages at historically low rates, save money and stay in their homes.
• Last, the plan won’t add a dime to the deficit and is fully paid for through a balanced deficit reduction plan that includes closing corporate tax loopholes and asking the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share.

As the President said, “The people of this country work hard to meet their responsibilities. The question tonight is whether we’ll meet ours. The question is whether, in the face of an ongoing national crisis, we can stop the political circus and actually do something to help the economy. The question is -- the question is whether we can restore some of the fairness and security that has defined this nation since our beginning.”

Later, he said, “Now, the American Jobs Act answers the urgent need to create jobs right away. But we can’t stop there. As I’ve argued since I ran for this office, we have to look beyond the immediate crisis and start building an economy that lasts into the future -- an economy that creates good, middle-class jobs that pay well and offer security. We now live in a world where technology has made it possible for companies to take their business anywhere. If we want them to start here and stay here and hire here, we have to be able to out-build and out-educate and out-innovate every other country on Earth.”

The President concluded the speech by saying, “Regardless of the arguments we’ve had in the past, regardless of the arguments we will have in the future, this plan is the right thing to do right now. You should pass it. And I intend to take that message to every corner of this country. And I ask -- I ask every American who agrees to lift your voice: Tell the people who are gathered here tonight that you want action now. Tell Washington that doing nothing is not an option. Remind us that if we act as one nation and one people, we have it within our power to meet this challenge.
President Kennedy once said, ‘Our problems are man-made –- therefore they can be solved by man. And man can be as big as he wants.’

These are difficult years for our country. But we are Americans. We are tougher than the times we live in, and we are bigger than our politics have been. So let’s meet the moment. Let’s get to work, and let’s show the world once again why the United States of America remains the greatest nation on Earth.

In an interview Thursday, Scott said the Daley chat was canceled. But he did make nice with Holder and Salazar.

"The goal is to make sure that I let them know that our goal is to figure out how to work together. Hopefully, they have the same goals I do," he said. "Anything we can do to create a working relationship."

He said he and Salazar talked about settling differences related to Everglades’ restoration.

"I believe we have the same goals," Scott said. "I want to figure out how to do that without lawsuits."
