Movie Review:
Rise of the Planet of the Apes — Rating: 3.5 STARS
This prequel was a bit disquieting; still it was fresh and entertaining. The movie touches the heart mainly because James Franco who plays a doctor (Will Rodman) seeks a cure for his dad’s Alzheimer. In the process develops this wonder drug and begins experimentation on several chimpanzees. However, one of the females goes wild and eventually put to sleep. But, before she dies gives birth to a baby chimp that the doctor takes home to care for it.

The chimp now named Caesar soon starts revealing remarkable intelligence and talents. Even Will’s father is showing a miraculous improvement. It isn't until the doctor tries a “superior” version of the drug on Caesar that things go amiss, sending Caesar to a prison-like institution. It is there that he leads a rebellion against humanity for betraying his love and trust.

This film is very intense as there is quite a bit of violence. What makes it more frightening is in seeing a bunch of ferocious apes on an attack mode. It’s not the same Planet of the Apes of the 60s. That, by comparison, was a bit tame! In this movie there are parts that will keep you jumping slightly out of your seat.

Democratic Lawmakers Launch Probe of Fired AG Investigators
Tallahassee, FL (Tampa Tribune) — Two Democratic lawmakers continued Thursday to hammer state Attorney General Pam Bondi with questions and records requests concerning her dismissal of two foreclosure fraud investigators in May. State Rep. Darren Soto of Orlando and State Senator Eleanor Sobel of Hollywood asked U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Wednesday to review the forced resignations of Assistant Attorneys General June Clarkson and Theresa Edwards.

Clarkson and Edward had received high performance marks from Bondi’s predecessor, Bill McCollum. The two said this week that their dismissals were “sudden” and that the order, they were told, had come “from the top.” Bondi stands by the decision, stating that one of those managers, Deputy Attorney General Carlos Muniz, cited several performance-based reasons for the pair’s dismissal, including “judgment in discussing matters related to pending investigations with third parties.”

Soto and Sobel’s probe could create new headaches for Bondi, and possibly for Gov. Rick Scott.

The two lawmakers are probing a possible connection between the terminations and Joe Jacquot, Bondi’s former special counsel who left to become a senior vice president at Lender Processing Services shortly before Clarkson and Edwards were dismissed. Soto and Sobel also are raising questions about Provest, a Tampa-based mortgage servicing company that Edwards and Clarkson were investigating, and about an unnamed LPS executive who previously worked for Scott’s former health care company, Solantic.

Senate to Pass FAA Deal to End Partial Shutdown
Washington (CNN) — Senate will pass the necessary FAA legislation by unanimous consent Friday in a so-called “pro forma” session to help restore funding, a Senate Democratic leadership told CNN.

President Obama calls the deal an “important step forward” as it will allows tens of thousands of people to go back to work. Congressional leaders reach a deal Thursday to temporarily resume FAA funding. The impasse has resulted in the furlough of about 4,000 federal workers while halting the activity on 200 airport construction projects.

President Obama to Unveil Jobs Push for Veterans
(CNN) — President Barack Obama will outline a new initiative Friday that aims to help former members of the military find private sector jobs, part of a renewed job creation effort focusing on unemployed veterans. The president is expected to lay out a series of reforms that his administration is pledging. It includes a “returning heroes and wounded warrior tax credit.”

Four Sentenced in Slaying of Florida Couple
(CNN) — Four men were sentenced in Florida on Thursday for their roles in the 2009 killings of a husband and wife who were shot to death when a crew of masked men burst into their home. The men pleaded guilty to second-degree murder charges, sentences range from 17 ½ to 24 years. At the time of the slayings there were nine special-needs children the couple had adopted in the house.

Gas Tax may be Next Tea Party Target
New York (CNN Money) — Some lawmakers in Congress may now oppose renewing the federal tax on gasoline and diesel fuel, which is used to maintain our nation’s highways. The federal gas tax of 18.4 cents a gallon expires at the end of September. In order to keep the gas tax, lawmakers would need to vote to extend the highway funding bill, which is what the gas tax is tied to.

AND, a recently introduced bill by Senate Republicans would allow states to opt out of the federal highway program — a program that uses $32 billion each year collected by the gas tax, plus a handful of smaller fees and some borrowing to distribute some $50 billion a year to the states for road construction, maintenance and mass transit projects.

You shouldn’t get too excited by the prospect of eliminating the federal gas tax which cost the average driver roughly $100 a year because the states would make up the loss by increasing their own gas tax and/or other driving-related fees.

FCC Promises 100,000 Jobs to Staff ‘Call Centers’
Washington (CNN) — FCC chairman Julius Genachowski along with business leaders from the group “Jobs4America” in an event in Jeffersonville, Indiana will unveil a project to open call centers in the United States. They are hoping to generate 100,000 jobs in the next two years. The call centers will provide a variety of consumer support services. Most call centers typically are based outside the United States ostensibly because the cost of labor is cheaper. The workers who do not speak English well-enough have come under fire by some consumer groups as being ineffective in communicating and resolving problems.

Afghan Official dies in Blast; 2 NATO troops Killed in Attacks
Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) — NEW: One NATO soldier is killed by a person dressed as Afghan police and three children are injured in the blast that killed Payenda Khan. Khan headed up a district in Kunduz for the National Directorate of Security. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.

Today’s Highlights...
Darren Soto, House Representative for District 49 and Practicing Attorney and Sheriff Bob Hansell, Chief Law Enforcement Officer of Osceola County
By Haydee Ayala
August 6, 2011
Orlando, FL — Radio talk show host Jose Miranda with his energetic and powerful voice has a great ability to connect with the listeners either to laughter or frustration. But, in the end he will endeavor to empower them through his experience and words.

Miranda takes a moment to remind everyone how our politicians in the GOP have entrenched themselves in their own irresponsible and self-serving political agenda. To the point that they have distorted information, lied deliberately, and, made a mockery of the entire political system. Sure they would have you to think that giving tax cuts to ‘small’ businesses would create jobs — a theory that has long since been discredited by the results of George Bush’s tax policies.

Nonetheless, they will continue corrupting the fact to the public. Their definition of cutting taxes for ‘small’ businesses only pertains to large conglomerates like PepsiCo (products like Pepsi, Lay’s, Doritos, Mountain Dew) with estimated worldwide retail sales of $119 Billion.

The distraction here is when most individuals hear the word “small businesses” they think of the ‘common’ businessman, but the common businessman doesn’t even factor in! These shelters are designed only for those companies that generate billions of dollars annually in profit and thereby can use the $250,000 in deductions – 30% of charitable gifts, to employee travel and expenses, miscellaneous, and so on. All of which make good business. However, under the new law the increase would simply raise the amount to $500,000 per year, which seems like a perfectly sound adjustment. However, the GOP is totally opposed to raising it.

Instead the focus is in chiseling away at your rights, proposing plans to cut costs on programs for the working society and also raise taxes which will be shouldered only by its working citizens, the elderly, and our children. And, still they will lay claim that they are acting in the best interest of the American people. The last time I looked the vast majority was not America’s top 2%.

Wake up my friends! It’s no secret our government has a spending problem. That’s been apparent for years! The debt ceiling didn’t emerge over night and definitely was not generated during the Obama administration. But don’t take our word for it. Recorded history shows it had been raised 70 times in the past; and, 18 different times for Reagan because Reagan tripled the national debt. Then it was raised another 19 times for Bush because he doubled the national debt. Both were Republicans and neither one received as much opposition. Truth is 75% of the federal debt comes from conservative Republicans.

The GOP has done everything in its power to make it impossible for this administration to achieve a positive end result, walking out on negotiations twice like spoil children. Consequently, our nation’s rating outlook was lowered for the first time in 70 years from a triple A to a double A. Either you own the problem or they will own you. Republicans created 75% of the federal debt yet they will have you believe it’s all because of the ‘socialist’ Democrats.

Don’t be fooled. TV ads are already airing so the time for preparedness is now. Look at the fact, not the artwork on the canvas. The GOP paint a pretty picture — one that will cloud many issues and draw your attention to what many Americans long to hear — “What our country needs are jobs!” Great slogan! However, wasn’t that one of the issues why they were elected into office in 2008? Still, you can be assured that the debt ceiling will be used as a blueprint for a fulcrum of the 2012 debate. This isn’t going away and the game is afoot!

After a much needed break, Miranda shifts gears to introduce Sheriff Bob Hansell from Osceola County who was gracious enough to take this time from his crazy schedule to join us in the studio.

Jose gives a little history on Sheriff Bob. Saying he began as a deputy sheriff and earned promotions to the rank of captain. He has served as a member and commander of the agency’s SWAT team, and as the high-risk incident commander. Prior to being elected Sheriff of Osceola County, Bob Hansell had worked in, supervised and managed virtually every area of the agency. However, what wasn’t mentioned was in addition to his many activities he is also a writer and has written on subjects like sexual predators and offenders for the Osceola News-Gazette. Sheriff Hansell is poise, straightforward and yet maintains a soft demeanor, which is not common to law enforcement personnel.

Jose having a law enforcement background himself engages Robert in the training aspect of the recruits. Inquiring if the training various from state to state particularly when it comes to directing traffic. For more on this interview, please go to our archived shows.

Next, Jose with just minutes on the clock introduces Darren Soto, House Representative for District 49. State Rep. Soto of Orlando along with State Senator Eleanor Sobel of Hollywood are probing an investigation of the dismissal of two foreclosure fraud investigators (Clarkson and Edwards) who were suddenly discharged after receiving glowing reviews from Bondi’s predecessor. They have asked U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to review the forced resignations which could create new headaches for Bondi and quite possibly Gov. Rick Scott. This interview regrettably was rather brief but we will continue to follow up with State Rep Soto as more details become available.

In closing we would like to remind you that Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday starts at 12:01 a.m., Friday, August 12, 2011, and end at midnight Sunday, August 14, 2011. During this period, no sales tax will be collected on sales of clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for $75 or less, or on certain school supplies selling for $15 or less. The exemption will still apply no matter how many items are sold on the same invoice to a customer. Books are NOT exempt from tax during the 2011 Sales Tax Holiday. If you require more information, go to http://dor.myflorida.com.

We’ve come to the end of another hour of Yo Soy Latino. Our aim is to open minds and awaken your thoughts. We look to a bright future and we hope we do not journey alone. Whether Republican or Democratic we need to stand together as a united force so that our politicians are aware that they are there for us. See you next week!

Fashion...
Style on a Dime
August 6, 2011
Get thrifty this season. When visiting the retail stores for all those super buys try something different, think outside the box. To offset this recession and rising unemployment, selecting the perfect outfit doesn’t have to be so overwhelming. One can still find great trendy collections by checking out the local thrift shops or flea markets. Fashion designers have been doing it for years. It’s been their little secret style footing for great inspirations.

The trick when you go vintage shopping is wearing clothing like leggings and a tank top so that you can easily try things on. Use your sense of touch rather than your eyes to make sense of a thrift store’s natural madness. Run your hands over the rack and when you touch a fabric that feels nice, stop! The better the fabric feels to your touch the better it will feel on your skin. More important, chances are it will be a good brand.

Don’t forget to check out the opposite gender’s section. Store workers tend to miscatalog great pieces and some of the best women’s jackets can be found in the men’s section. Buying something inexpensive doesn’t necessarily ring cheap. Also, if you find that one outfit that has potential but needs some alterations before it can “fits just right” simply take it to the tailor to get that perfect fit. Alterations can cost you anywhere from $10 to $20. And, don’t forget to check out the big box stores like Target, Burlington, Kohl’s and Walmart.

But if your wallet is still looking and feeling a tad lighter reinvent some of the pieces you already have. Most women have the skeletons for a fashionable outfit right in their own closets. All that’s needed are a few accessories. So accessorize! Accessorize! Accessorize! That should be every gal’s mantra. One tip is buying three of the same inexpensive necklaces and twisting them together to create your own unique style. Include a belt to give more “oomph” to that piece. Belts will add shape and style to any outfit.

Pork Chops with Sticky Rice and Thai Green-Chili Sauce
August 6, 2011
Here, in a play on Vietnamese pork chops, he marinates the meat in a Chinese-style mix of hoisin, orange juice and chiles, then serves the juicy chops with sticky rice and a side of sweet, crunchy watermelon.

Our Pairing Suggestion
Because the Thai chile sauce here is deceptively fiery, its perfect wine partner is a cool white with a hint of spice-moderating sweetness, like a German Kabinett Riesling. ("Kabinett" is a designation of how ripe the grapes were when picked.)

Servings: 4 • Time: 3 HRS 15 MIN PLUS OVERNIGHT MARINA TING (Active 40 MIN)

Ingredients:
¼ cup plus 3 tablespoons Asian fish sauce
¼ cup hoisin sauce
¼ cup fresh orange juice
¼ cup coarsely chopped fresh ginger
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon Chinese black bean sauce
½ teaspoon Asian sesame oil
Eight ½ inch-thick, bone-in pork loin chops (about 5 ounces each)
2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
10 Thai-bird chiles or 2 serrano chiles, stemmed and thinly sliced
3 tablespoons sugar
¼ cup fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons chopped cilantro, plus leaves for garnish
2 cups white sticky rice, soaked overnight (see Note)
Chilled watermelon slices, for serving

Directions:
In a medium bowl, whisk 1/4 cup of the fish sauce with the hoisin, orange juice, ginger, honey, black bean sauce and sesame oil; transfer to a shallow baking dish. Add the chops and turn to coat, then refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight.

Meanwhile, in a mortar, pound the garlic, chiles and 1 tablespoon of the sugar to a coarse paste; gradually add the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar until pasty. Add the lime juice, the remaining 3 tablespoons of fish sauce and the water. Stir in the chopped cilantro.

Line a bamboo steamer basket with moistened cheesecloth. Drain the soaked rice and spread it in the steamer in an even layer. Set the basket over a pot of boiling water, cover and steam the rice until tender but chewy, about 30 minutes. Cover, remove from the heat and keep warm.

Light a grill. Remove the pork from the marinade and grill over high heat, turning once, until lightly charred, about 6 minutes. Serve the pork with the sticky rice, green-chile sauce, watermelon slices and cilantro leaves.

MAKE AHEAD: The marinating pork chops and Thai green-chile sauce can be refrigerated overnight. NOTE: Sticky rice is often sold as sweet rice or Thai sticky rice.

Health...
Four Friends of Eye Health
August 6, 2011
Rely on four special nutrients to help reduce your risk of a common eye problem by up to 35 percent.

Diets that contain ample amounts of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, and zinc are associated with a greatly reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration, an eye disease that is common with aging and can lead to blindness. Good sources of these nutrients: fresh produce, nuts, fortified cereals, and supplements.

Diet plays a role in many disease processes, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 55. In a recent study of people in this age group, those who reported the highest intake of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, and zinc were significantly less likely to develop AMD than those who had the lowest intake. Fill up on oranges, mangoes, and strawberries for vitamin C. Turkey, chicken, and fortified cereal are great sources for zinc. Almonds and peanut butter, or a supplement, can help boost your intake of vitamin E. Sweet potatoes, apricots, and peaches are excellent sources of beta carotene. Other nutrients that appear to be beneficial for eye health include lutein and zeaxanthin. Like beta carotene, they are carotenoids found in various kinds of fruits and vegetables. Good sources of lutein include spinach, peas, and green bell peppers. Good sources of zeaxanthin include corn, spinach, orange bell peppers, and tangerines.

S&P downgrades U.S. Credit Rating from AAA
August 6, 2011
Washington (AP) — Credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s on Friday downgraded the United States’ credit rating first time in the history of the ratings.

The credit rating agency said that it is cutting the country's top AAA rating by one notch to AA-plus. The credit agency said that it is making the move because the deficit reduction plan passed by Congress on Tuesday did not go far enough to stabilize the country's debt situation.

A source familiar with the discussions said that the Obama administration feels the S&P's analysis contained "deep and fundamental flaws."

S&P said that in addition to the downgrade, it is issuing a negative outlook, meaning that there was a chance it will lower the rating further within the next two years. It said such a downgrade to AA would occur if the agency sees less reductions in spending than Congress and the administration have agreed to make, higher interest rates or new fiscal pressures during this period.

S&P first put the government on notice in April that a downgrade was possible unless Congress and the administration came up with a credible long-term deficit reduction plan and avoided a default on the country's debt.

After months of wrangling and negotiations with the administration, Congress passed this week a debt reduction package at the 11th-hour that averted a possible default.
In its statement, S&P said that it had changed its view "of the difficulties of bridging the gulf between the political parties" over a credible deficit reduction plan.

S&P said it was now "pessimistic about the capacity of Congress and the administration to be able to leverage their agreement this week into a broader fiscal consolidation plan that stabilizes the government's debt dynamics anytime soon."

Source: Contributor:Martin Crutsinger, AP.

For the GOP this was a leverage moment
When John Chambers, chairman of the sovereign rating committee at S&P, admitted in a report in Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal that their decision to lower the ‘outlook not rating’ of the USA was motivated by the debates about the debt ceiling. And, when asked if the decision by S&P officials to downgrade was a unanimous vote by its committee, he offered no statement.

In addition, there was a $2 trillion error in S&P’s mathematical conclusion which was uncovered by the Obama administration officials, a mistake that would have large implications on the decision. Nonetheless, Chambers remained firm stating, “The kind of debate we’ve seen over the debt ceiling has made us think the United States is no longer in the top echelon on its political settings.

The frantic showdown over the debt ceiling that played out in Washington last week, bringing the nation to the brink of default, was the natural outgrowth of a years-long effort by GOP recruiters to build a new majority and reverse the party's fortunes. That effort began before the economy collapsed in 2008, before the government bailouts that followed, before the tea party rose in response to push its anti-tax, anti-spending message.

The Washington Post reconstructed the Republican Party's transformation, and its impact on the nation's economic course, through interviews with the leading participants during this summer's drama and from earlier interviews, some of them recorded, at various points during the past 2 1/2 years.
