Independence Day, July Fourth
The 'Fourth of July' is the day this great country declared its independence from Britain and adopted in 1776 the Declaration of Independence, making it the official birthday of the United States of America. However, it is also a day of barbecues, parades, and a night of concerts filled with a brilliant display of fireworks. So as we celebrate this day with friends, family and loved ones remember those who are serving in the armed forces and say a prayer for them. Then turn to your families, friends and loved ones to wish them a safe and Happy Fourth.

Movie Review:
Bad Teacher — rating: 3 STARS
"Bad Teacher" is a hilarious overachiever film. It does have just enough politically incorrect humor to perhaps merit a B- grade. Nonetheless, Diaz is fearless and refreshing in this role. It shows her in a totally different light outside of the usual love movies she has been known to play. Her role is more like a rebellious teenager acting out against her parents. And, if you are like most, it isn’t long before you start feeling you too are in detention. Overall, the movie has just enough sharp lines and a few good laughs it is neither outrageous nor accurate.

Minnesota Government Shuts Down as Budget Talks Fail
(Politico) — Minnesota's government shut down at midnight local time Friday after six months of negotiations between Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton and the state's Republican-controlled legislature failed to produce a budget compromise.

At a late-night capitol press conference attended by the very GOP legislators with which Dayton was sparring, the governor blamed Republicans for refusing to budge from a no-tax increase position. A GOP legislator said Dayton "threw in the towel."

Clinton: U.S. ‘would welcome’ dialogue with Muslim Brotherhood
(CNN) — The Obama administration is open to dialogue with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Thursday about the Islamist group. Any contracts will emphasize the importance of and support for democratic principles.

Mahmoud Ghozlan, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, said he had heard of the U.S. interest in dialogue only media reports. Adding the U.S. administration has supported dictators for decades and is hated in the Middle East region more than any other country. If the U.S. is serious in opening a dialogue, they must first respect the people’s choices for a true democracy, independence and respect their choice of leaders. Then we would welcome the open dialogue.”

Rhode Island Lawmakers Pass Bill to Allow Civil Unions for Gays
(NY Times) — Less than a week after same-sex marriage was legalized in New York, the Rhode Island State Senate approved on Wednesday evening a bill allowing not marriage, but civil unions for gay couples, despite fierce opposition from gay-rights advocates who called the legislation discriminatory.

The bill, which already passed in the state’s House of Representatives and which the governor said he will likely sign, would grant gay and lesbian couples most of the rights and benefits that Rhode Island provides married couples. It was offered as a compromise this spring after Gordon D. Fox, the openly gay speaker of the Democratic-controlled House, said he could not muster enough votes to pass a same-sex marriage bill.

6th Circuit Panel Upholds Individual Mandate
(Politico) — A panel of judges for the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the health reform law's mandate that everyone buy insurance is "a valid exercise of Congress's authority under the Commerce Clause." The decision came in the lawsuit filed against the Affordable Care Act by the Thomas More Law Center. It is the first time a federal Court of Appeals has ruled on the constitutionality of President Barack Obama's signature legislative achievement.

Attack on Hotel in Kabul Ends With Deaths of 7 Taliban, 11 Others
Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) — All 7 Taliban fighters killed attacked Kabul’s Hotel Inter-Continental in a brazen, carefully orchestrated operation that began Tuesday night and continued into Wednesday, ending with their deaths and those of 11 other people some six hours after it began, police state. The death number may increase, says chief of criminal investigations. There were no indications that U.S. military or diplomatic personnel were at the hotel, U.S. officials told CNN.

Congress moves forward on Free Trade Deals
Washington (CNN Money) — The Senate will officially take up three trade deals and a scaled-back version of a jobs retraining program for laid-off workers on Thursday. But final passage on all the measures is not a done deal. Republican support depends on how closely the trade deals and jobs retraining program are linked together. The program gives unemployed workers financial help and job training when employers move jobs overseas. More than 435,000 workers would be eligible for the program if it were reinstated but Republicans are concerned about funding such stimulus program because of the big deficits the nation faces.

Pella, Iowa (CNN) — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Tuesday she has not made up her mind yet about whether to run for president in 2012 despite her daughter’s claim that she has. Palin told the group who attended the premiere of a film produced by conservative filmmaker Stephen Bannon, “You don’t need a title. You don’t need a political position. The film takes a flattering look at Palin’s record as governor to being Sen. John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 presidential election.”

Today’s Highlights...
From Verona Italy, Manuela Uber Representing the Club di Giulietta (Juliet Club)
by Haydee Ayala
July 2, 2011
Orlando, FL — Once again listeners turn to 810 AM to listen to the suave sexiness of talk show host Jose Miranda who delivered another intoxicating program. After addressing movies, fashion and some of this week’s top news in politics he went on to introduced YSL’s featured guest direct from Verona, Italy, Ms.Manuela Uber, one of the secretaries to Juliet and a representative of Club di Giulietta (Juliet Club).

Miranda who was in an exploration mode to see if in an age of global communication has love changed asking Uber, Does Juliet really shows us a belief in true love or have we become more disconnected? Considering the availability of cyberspace like singles and networking sites; and, would we even recognize true love if it were in front of us? Followed by, I hear Italians have long-held a reputation for being among the most passionate people in the world. From lovers of fine wine, fine food, and fine women; also they seem to make an art form of the finer things in life, love included. So, in a country famed for passionate lovers, is it a myth or reality?

Uber responded quickly stating that by Italian standards when it comes to love, some of its towns folk would claim that the people of Verona are more interested in making money than making love since the men of Verona are known more for their business savvy than romance. She also added that love hasn’t changed much from Juliet’s generation to present day despite the different cultures since people still believe in love in spite of modern technology. They inspire the many who reach out by offering them an anonymous ear to listen to their problems in a less judgmental manner and would return to words of hopeful advice and encouragement.

Then Miranda goes on to say, I understand there’s a bronze statue of Juliet and visitors have rub her right breast as it is said to be good luck; and, because of all the fondling, Juliet's right breast has a smooth shine and her cup size has diminished from a size B to A. Is that true?

“That is correct. Juliet is the symbol of true love and touching Juliet's breast brings good luck and a happy love life. “You risk great tragedy by not giving it a quick squeeze,” says Uber. Many tourists and locals in love flurry to rub Juliet’s breast. In addition she added that the latest craze for young people is to stick gum on the wall under Juliet’s balcony as a symbol of their undying love. In hindsight one has to say that the spirit of Romeo and Juliet thrives in the city of Verona and continues to inspired many couples to pledge their love or renew their vows.

Although Shakespeare wrote about the greatest story of all times, he never set foot in Italy. However, today if one were to ask, “Where are the graves of Romeo and Juliet?” no one would have a clue. Since it was believed that their gravesite was trashed as suicide was considered wrong and viewed with much distain during the 13th Century. But because these young lovers came from money instead of placing their remains in an unmarked burial ground, they were placed in a tomb along side each other honoring their enduring love.

Unfortunately, the tomb was defiled by locals and tourist alike who took pieces of the stone as some form of souvenir. It is also said that Napoleon’s mistress or second wife had some of the marble forged into some type of necklace. Forcing the property to be sold and bought several times over. There was also a point when Romeo and Juliet’s bodies were exposed so much so that it could be seen but eventually after years of exposure their bodies turned to dust.

However, it wasn’t until the property was finally bought by some aristocrat or someone who had money and determined to repair this dwelling once neglected to bring it back to a presence reminiscent of what it might have looked like when Romeo and Juliet lived, painstakingly moving all the stones to recreate and preserve the vision of two young lovers who chose death then live apart.

So how did this come to be Verona’s biggest attraction? After years of abandonment, it was Verona’s city officials in the 30s that decided to erect monuments of Romeo and Juliet for two reasons. Early in the century the city leaders had purchased and restored the house (No. 23 via Cappelo) that was reputed to belong to the Capulet’s and the place where Juliet was born. This of course encouraged tourism. Another reason was because they were inspired by a Hollywood crew who visited the city to study its architecture for the making of Romeo and Juliet filmed by MGM.

That was extremely informative! If you would like to reach out to the Juliet Club and share your thoughts to the secretaries of Juliet go to www.julietclub.com.

We have come to the end of another show. See you next week for more of the unexpected and if you want to listen to this week’s program go to our archived shows and hear the program through its entirety.

Fashion...
Rocking your Jeans
July 2, 2011
The possibilities of rocking your jeans this summer are endless! Particularly since the fabric in summer jeans are thinner and you can either dress up or down making it this season’s hottest fashion.

Go from the faded look to wearing bright hot colors or the rich dark colors, then combine it with colorful tops in shades like gold, yellow, orange or red. Even the ripped jean is making a comeback. This is great because anything made of denim can be ripped and worn fashionably. Besides, it is the only style that will let your creative side come out effortlessly.

Don't overlook this summer’s staple of white jeans, a must have in any woman’s wardrobe. These jeans can be coordinated with a wealth of tops, cardigans, jackets and other accessories. All of which will give you a more distinctive yet completely different look each time. The white jean combines well with any color blouse or tank and comes in a huge assortment of styles, from the tight fits to the straight leg or boot cut.

Additionally, the white jean is best when worn as office attire. By combining a printed lace sheer blouse over a camisole or halter top with a short jacket you're in perfect business mode, both styles will take you from day or evening. But, on those 'night out with the girls' go for a form fitted red top with an anchor silver necklace and a blue or white jacket to show off the nautical look. What’s more, if you want to be truly adventurous, coordinate the white jeans with a tube dress to give you that extra edge when you want to show off your attitude.

Now what remains is pairing your outfit with the appropriate shoe, for example, stilettos, flats, wedges, sandals, or sneakers. Just about any style of footwear can create that unique versatile look.

Go on girl! Rock your jeans 'cause it is the one style that can work all summer long!

Basketball
NBA Locks out it’s Players
New York (ESPN/NBA) — The memories of a thrilling NBA season might have to last for a while. There’s no telling when basketball will be back. The NBA locked out its players Friday when its collective bargaining agreement expired, becoming the second pro sports league shut down by labor strife. The long-expected lockout puts the 2011-12 season in jeopardy and comes as the NFL is trying to end its own work stoppage that began in March. It is believed to be only the second time that two leagues have been shut down simultaneously by labor problems.

Like with the NFL lockout, NBA players won’t be the only ones affected. Employees of teams and the league also face a very uncertain future. Stern admitted all options would be considered, including furloughs for his employees.

NFL, Players to Resume Talks Next Week
Minneapolis (ESPN/NFL) — The labor negotiating teams led by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and players’ association chief DeMaurice Smith met for a couple of hours Friday and will return to the table after the July 4th weekend. Friday marked the fourth straight day of negotiation. The lockout began March 12, with the central issue being how to split revenues for the $9 billion business.

Tips to Swim Safely and Prevent Ear Infections
July 2, 2011
(Real Age) It’s summer! Are visions of swimming in cool water swirling in your head? We’re ready to dive in, too, but only for the fun of it. Swimmers stay young and live long: You’re half as likely to die early as folks who just lounge around the pool. The only drawback: Summer is peak season for swimmer’s ear, which leads to 2.4 million annual doctor visits, half by adults. And each bout can lighten your wallet by about $200 smackeroos.

Got better things to do with that cash? We thought so. Here’s how to keep water out of your ear canals, which will keep little critters from moving in and causing infections:

Use a swim cap and earplugs. Both help block water, so bugs can’t settle down and multiply.

Dry off fast. As soon as you finish swimming, gently blot your ears dry with a towel. No poking around with cotton swabs; that could start trouble, not stop it.

Tilt and hop. Still got water in there? Tilt your head, hop lightly on one foot, and let gravity and shaking clear your ears.

Not good at hopping? Do the head-tilt part while pulling your lower earlobe in different directions to help the water escape. Or hold a hair dryer several inches from your ear; just e sure it’s on the lowest heat and fan settings.

See your doc or neighborhood drugstore clinics if ... you develop pain itchiness, redness, or pus. You may need antibiotic ear drops. While you’re at the doc’s, ask whether using alcohol-based drops after swimming might help prevent future trouble.

Price of U.S. Wars: $4.4 Trillion
July 2, 2011
The final bill for U.S. military involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan could be as high as $4.4 trillion, according to a comprehensive new report Tuesday.
In the 10 years since American troops were sent into Afghanistan, the federal government has already spent between $2.3 trillion and $2.7 trillion, say the authors of the study by Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies.
The report calculates not only direct spending on the conflicts but also the long-term costs of caring for wounded veterans and projected war spending from 2012 to 2020.

At a minimum, say the authors of the study, the final cost for these military engagements will be $3.7 trillion. But the report also points out that their estimates do not include at least $1 trillion more in interest payments and other costs that cannot yet be quantified. Indeed, the report criticized the U.S. Congress and the Pentagon for poor accounting.

Although the number of U.S. soldiers killed in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have been made public, the report notes, it is not yet clear how many soldiers return to the United States with injuries and illnesses. New disability claims are being submitted on an ongoing basis, and many injuries among U.S. contractors have not been made public, further complicating calculations of the costs of war.

Even as President Obama recently announced plans for a withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the report asserts that conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan will continue through the decade, adding to both financial and human cost.
The report puts the number of civilian deaths to date at approximately 137,000, and the total number of deaths attributable to military conflict in these countries, in uniform or out of uniform, to around 225,000. The study also suggests that the number of war refugees and displaced persons now number around 7.8 million.

“Costs of War,” as the study was titled, was a joint project that involved the work of over twenty academics, including economists, anthropologists, political scientists, legal experts and a physician.
