Highlights of Today’s Show...
September 12, 2009
The Yo Soy Latino show typically opens with a news segment lasting about five minutes into the show. However, today Jose begins the program after his usual salutation by recognizing the many notable guests that have graced the doors of the YSL show. Next, he examines the issues germane to the local and national news followed by a review of the top movies and latest releases, to his favorite stogie picks, then on to today’s cool trivia before reflecting on Haydee’s vogue of the latest fashion trends for this season.

Afterwards he leads his listeners to the substance of the show, the much anticipated interview with Ms. Laura Flanders. Jose opens with, “So tell me, who is Laura Flanders?” And Laura replies I’m a journalist who’s been in the business a long time in television and radio, print, published books and as of last year I’m the talk show host for GRITtv. As the interview moves forward Laura points out that our job as journalists is not to lecture people but to get them to think. We try to hold conversations, and ultimately get them involve. Jose then asks if Laura had listened to the President’s speech. Laura replied, “Yes, I certainly did!”

“The President, as stated by Laura, really reached people’s hearts particularly in the end when he said, ‘We didn’t come here to fear the future but to shape it’. That was a powerful, powerful phrase that speaks to all. It’s that kind of statement that got so many people excited about Barack Obama a couple of years ago when he was running in the primaries. It reminded you that this was a long shot candidature, a far out shot for the Presidency. Who managed to mobilize people by telling them it’s not about me but about us, it’s about we”.

Laura goes on to say, “frankly I think that we would be better off as a country if we could simply get more proper insurance out of the business of health care. The business they’re in is in making money. That requires rejecting people’s claim for health care clearly that’s their responsibility is to their shareholders. I think we’d be better off with a health system that was only driven by the needs of keeping people healthy and help them out when they are sick. The President makes a great pitch for change and that was a good thing”.

Jose returns to the heckling issue stating his concerns pointing out that over the years we’ve never had this type of behavior before to the extent that it’s being shown against this man. Therefore, it leads one to think that it’s more than a policy issue, what are your views?

Laura answers. “I think you’re talking more broadly now. As a journalist we need to focus on the issues at hand and I think the President would prefer that we really talk about the issues that were raised in his speech rather than the heckling that this guy from South Carolina managed to get headlines with”.

“However, if you’re speaking more in the level of civility being shown to this nation’s first African American President, yes there is a different level of civility. Then you’re asking a big question and your question is right on”.

Wow, what a compelling response. First, in examining the dynamics of the health care system to the shrinking views which certain groups have managed to take control of, goes far beyond what can be explained as ‘for the people’ but a deliberate attempt to mask and delay putting a proper health plan out there that will serve the masses now. Second, the respect showed this man and his office.

To hear more on this discussion go to www.yosoylatino.us click on the archived shows and listen to Ms. Flanders speak. She is quite a personality: intense, passionate and poignant. If you wish to watch GRITtv on television or satellite television depending on where you live, it is GRITtv on Dish Network channel 9415 nightly at 8 pm and all day segments of the show will appear or online at grittv.org. Haydee’s Slice of Fashion...
A Splash of the 80s
September 12, 2009
This season’s silhouettes call for a splash of the 80s. As you know September marks the beginning of the fall season and all that surrounds you are the summer months still blazing on while the rest of the world embraces autumn. So for all the fashionistas out there it’s going to be a bit tricky just because fall fashion usually consists of multiple layers and unless you’re in an air-conditioned building multiple layering just won’t work with this heat. However, looking good is still going to be okay.

You will find some of the styles for this fall have shoulders as wide as a coat hanger and hemline up to there, mixed with influences of menswear and exaggerated proportions and you have a revitalization of the 1980s, even the thick platform soles and sky-high heels are back. Everything is coming up 80s this season.

It’s not unusual for designers to scan the glossary of the past to revive the present. For example if you take certain styles from other designers in that period—like Thierry Mugler’s big shoulders to Christian Lacroix short pouf skirt with crinolines underneath that harked back to the 50s, Dior with his new look of 1947 to the brash metal mesh of Gianni Versace's glam years. Combine any three ideas together from those designers and you can actually complete one outfit which will give a modern version of the '80s vision.

While cardigans are still cool, the jacket is back in earnest. Tailored jackets with pockets are what’s in. The new jackets are snug, not oversize (except for those shoulder pads). Yes ladies, shoulder pads are back just like the return of the Grecian dress. Who would have thought that the Greek-goddess look would have become a serious contender for today’s closet space and yet it is.

So here's a quick overview....
COLORS Black is fail-safe, but there are other sober options, like black and white, taupe or light brown, and rust. Fresh ideas include greens (and variation of greens), burnt umber, tan, mineral-gem shades, and sparkling metallics.

JACKETS These are yours for the picking, from the boyfriend blazer to the sporty biker jacket, the snug-fit tailored or double-breasted oversize. They need only one thing to make them look right for the new season: shoulder pads.

PANTS AND PANTSUITS All the summer trouser shapes are still around—tapered, slouchy, harem. Last season's harem pants will look fresh with a taut top or a tailored jacket.

DRAPES Dresses are the most obvious choice, but drape tops can be worn with slender pants to fine-tune the silhouette.

SKIRTS The swag skirt, folds dropping asymmetrically is part of the drape story. But there are other alternatives to consider: short bouncy skirts to the pencil skirts—all slim, elongated, over-the-knee shapes and easiest to wear with a tunic top or a belted jacket. Consider urban shorts, if you have great legs.

Keep in mind that it is how you wear them and what you pair them with that will make the difference, but know your body. If you feel heavy, go easy on all over draping. And last but not least, if there is one thing that I know will make your look modern and won't cost more than a visit to the hairdresser, it is a new hair do.

Well that concludes our show for today. We hope you’ve enjoyed this hour with Jose and Haydee and the YSL team. Come back next week and share that cup of coffee with us as we bring you another exciting interview.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
September 5, 2009
The Yo Soy Latino show is an outstanding radio program whose message is about getting the word out. Whether its politics or one’s personal convictions the message will continuously sizzle and invariably knock your socks off or it might just amaze and shock you but nonetheless it will be informative.

Today Jose’s fiery introduction tackles the nation’s most popular controversial stories—President Obama’s address to school children and the Arizona gun reception at the Obama protest. Jose was much like the line backer scoring a touchdown but he was speaking more intimately rather than his traditional or comedic form of narration. Occasionally, Jose likes to stir the pot to get his listeners to call because it opens ones mind to some ugly truths.

Bringing a loaded weapon of any kind to a political rally or gathering is not the best move regardless if you have legal authority to do so. Especially to a place where the President of the United States will be sparks a lot of attention and controversy as well as emotions; and, those emotions are usually negative. It’s not about using your rights or losing them. When you start to bring guns to a political rally it compounds things raising all kinds of concerns and it can become quite scary for many. Furthermore, it can have a chilling effect in the ability of our society to carry on honest communication, which should raise a ‘red flag’ to all or worst signifies an underlying issue which in the past has torn this country apart.

As for the President’s planned talk at the schools that should not have inspire such controversy since it is not the first time that the oval office has addressed children. Children are the future leaders of America and for certain conservative individuals to stand righteously stating that the President is using children to spread his socialist ideology are absurd. Where’s the unity of this nation? Why are we so quick to condemn before obtaining the facts? Well, Jose made no bones about his views for he put it out there not to offend or chip away at another but to give you fruitful thought.

It wasn’t long before his lighthearted spirit rushes back and directs his listeners to Haydee for another segment of Fashion before introducing his guest the most charming and vivacious Magda I. Torres, the Host of En Agenda News Analysis Talk Show which can be heard Monday thru Friday 7:00-11:00 a.m.

Jose begins his conversation by asking Magda about Commissioner Mildred Fernandez who has announced that she is running for Mayor of Orlando. She faces stiff competition from the likes of Tim Adams, Akinyemi O. Agbede, Reynaldo Vazquez, Bill Segal, Linda Stewart, Matthew Falconer, Daniel Webster and Tim Davis. What has Ms. Fernandez done for our community since she was voted into office?

Magda expressed herself this way. Before talking about Ms. Fernandez and her decision to run for office as Mayor of Orange County, Magda wanted to touch upon one issue. It was around June 12th when Mildred Fernandez announced that she was not going to run for Mayor and the reason she gave for that was that she wanted to work for the community for her contingents that in a recession moment like the one we’re living she wanted to do a couple of things that were very important to help the people.

And one of the things she mentioned was that she wanted to supervise the budget of Orange County assuring the public that the funding were used properly and didn’t want the tax payers to be burdened by the situation while mentioning a whole bunch of things she wanted to do. Then Jose interjected and said, “so Magda basically what has she done specifically”, returning back to his original question. Magda answered well she’s been in the county. She’s a commissioner this is her second term.

Then Magda stated that she was engaged in a conversation with a TV reporter who said that Ms. Fernandez had taken very, very strong care in letting the people know who she is by attending all political, social, and community activities. And by doing so, has made an image for herself by attending all these places. Intriguing, controversial, holy cow moments etc. listen online; hear what happens next by going to www.yosoylatino.us click on the archived shows which are produced and available to you. Haydee's Slice of Fashion...
Flaunt your baby bump!
September 5, 2009
Today’s vogue was inspired by my daughter, Tiffany, who just learned she’s having a girl and will be calling her little bundle of joy, Lilyana. So for all the lovely beautiful women out there who are just starting on this incredible journey of pregnancy this write is devoted to you.

I know fashion has not always been too kind to women when they pass the “just bloated” phase but today’s designers have stepped it up a notch for the mothers-to-be making styles and designs more flattering to your new curves.

Therefore my advice to you is to forget those oversized shirts and dresses. Times have changed. Oversized clothing may have been an acceptable form once because there weren’t many trendy styles that suited a woman’s curves. However, designers are presenting the most appealing garments on the rack. So go ahead and buy clothes that show off your pregnant body. Look for tops that are made of pregnancy-friendly fabrics. All of which will gently hug your growing tummy while allowing plenty of room for growth.

Include tops with certain features such as tie-backs or side shirring which is merely a gathering of the cloth into decorative rows by parallel stitching, pattern, pleating, etc. These will help ensure your tops will compliment you throughout your pregnancy.

Also, select tops that include a gathered hem below your belly bump. Today’s t-shirts or scoop neck tanks to v-neck tops are more stylish and will always be complimentary to pregnant women. Because it will give your body some shape allowing you to show off your curves properly while still being in-the-moment with today’s trendy looks. Plus they are comfortable! AND, when one is pregnant ‘comfort’ is a must!

Another look I especially like which is both comfy and stylish is pairing a bump-hugging top or t-shirt with a long skirt made of soft easy flowing fabric, like a jersey, a cotton or silk material. Or, if you prefer you can combine your bump-hugging wrap top with your favorite pair of jeans and knee-high boots (high or low heels depending on the wearer) for an always-trendy look.

If you are considering attire for evening or the workplace, picture a long sleeve mock layer maternity dress like the one from ‘A Pea in the Pod’. Their collection is extraordinary for they have the richest fabrics and the most exquisite details, plus they are reasonably priced.

Why a mock layer maternity dress because it offers diversity? It’s a quick change from the office to evening merely by taking off the long sleeve blouse. The dress on its own is stunning pair it with some oversized earnings, add several bracelets it will give a finish look to your outfit for an evening out with friends or your significant other. You’ll be amazed how many heads will turn. People will not only see your face glowingly but they will take notice in the beauty reflected in your pregnancy as you enter a room in your classy attire flaunting your baby bump.

The gift of motherhood is a special juncture in one’s life and women can show beauty in pregnancy as clearly illustrated by many celebrities. Take delight in wearing garments that compliment you. And, let the rest of the world see you in all your radiance for it’s your time to shine.

And that concludes our show for today. We hope you’ve enjoyed this hour with Jose and Haydee and the YSL team. Come back next week and share that cup of coffee with us as we bring you Ms. Laura Flanders of GRITtv.

Highlights of Today’s Show...
August 29, 2009
Saturday mornings at YSL are usually filled with pre-show jitters, conversations and a direction of what’s to come today was no different. The studio was humming with anticipation as Jose starts his opening monologue greeting his listeners inviting them to join him for coffee and to hear the local and national news before concentrating on Fashion with Haydee.

As Haydee begins her segment on men’s personal care and what men in general can do to protect their facial features as they mature, Jose jumps right in to stir the pot a bit with some humor. Before long his guests Alan Kornman and Vito Esposito of Radio Jidah were all taking part in the fun. After a short while, Jose eases into the whole issue of what makes these two dynamos so determine in their quest.

Vito is the first to speak followed by Alan. Here’s a snap shot of what was said. We are American patriots—individuals bringing more focus on what’s happening in America today, especially after 9/11. The Islamic movement is not just a quite movement about assimilating, which they are not. Their purpose is to overtake the Western civilization, including the United States of America.

Further, we are a politically correct and multicultural society and Islam doesn’t believe in that. They are not willing to adapt yet we’re a melting pot of cultural societies at least that’s what the sales pitch is today. And, we have to accept everybody’s form of life

Yet, the Somali Muslims coming over to America in places like the Tyson Food Industries in Tennessee where the labor union after negotiating deleted Labor Day in favor of an Islamic holiday simply because the majority of employees were Muslims. It wasn’t until an uproar occurred that the decision to delete Labor Day was reversed.

All other cultures have assimilated becoming Americans first but Islam has not, even the moderates are not speaking out. This is a democratic republic and Shari law is a politically based ideology masquerading as a religion they are dynamically opposed to our freedom. They believe in superiority and not that all men are created equal; and, that was NOT the intention of our foundling fathers.

To encapsulate what Radio Jidah is? It's a radio program run by four regular guys who hold jobs but look at themselves as an educational arm for America. Well, there you have it! We encourage you to visit their website at www.radiojihad.org take a listen to their shows and forge your own opinion.

Then Jose proceeds to introduce Dr. Linnda Durre to the show. She’s a psychotherapist, expert witness, art teacher, art therapist, artist, speaker and trainer, sports performance consultant, business and corporate consultant, writer and author, magazine and newspaper columnist, teleplay and screenplay writer, radio and TV talk show host, director, producer, script consultant, actor and acting coach and a moonlights as car sales women on weekends (grin).

Whoa! That’s a mouthful. She is quite the Renaissance woman who will soon be having her own program on WEUS 810 AM starting Tuesday, September 8th. Her program will cover various topics—relating to gays, teens, personal relationships, and so much more. The difference between Dr. Durre and any other talk show host in the same field is that she is passionate about helping people and it reflects in her voice. If you want to know more about Dr. Durre her website is www.drdurre.com. However, if you have a question and need Dr. Durre’s help, you can reach her on her mobile 407-739-8620 or drop an email at linnda.durre.com.

Haydee's Slice of Fashion
For all you Gents out there...
This one’s for you!
August 29, 2009
As men get into their 40s and 50s they are not as conscious of how they look. I guess mainly because they mature more kindly than women. Nonetheless, there are certain factors that do aid in the aging process. Smoking is number one. In terms of your skin it will cause premature aging and premature wrinkling. Secondly, it’s the sun.

Men are prone to experienced more sun exposure because of their many activities—in sports, military, jobs, etc. more so than women. This is not to say that women are not active in these areas but as men age and with the increased sun exposure followed by their lack of putting on any SPF lotions they are at a greater risk for skin damage. And a lot of what needs to be done is preventative. Just as women put themselves on a regiment, men need to follow suit.

When in the sun make certain to use sunscreens. The sun is made up of two kinds of rays: there is UVA rays and UVB rays. Put simply, you should think about UVA rays as "UV Aging" rays and UVB rays would be "UV Burn", which is more dangerous because it penetrates a little bit more deeply than the UVA and causes the changes that lead to premature wrinkling, poor skin texture, and tone. Further, as the years go on these UV Burns can also lead to skin cancers.

Here are five simple steps one can follow:
1. Cleanse
2. Exfoliate
3. Moisturize
4. Protect your eyes
5. Protect your lips

If you do nothing else, cleansing is by far the most important action you should do to your face. Use a product like Dove soap which contains moisturizing properties. Cleaning removes dirt and any other impurities lingering on your face.

For exfoliating, use your everyday fine granule cane sugar. Mixed about a quarter teaspoon of sugar with a teaspoon of water and gently rub on your face avoiding the eye area. This is mild enough to do every day and less likely to cause irritation, plus its right there in your kitchen cabinet. Also, the use of an inexpensive moisturizer containing SPF protection will keep your skin supple, protected, and less likely to dry out thru the day. Plus, it will make your face touch-ably soft.

The eyes...Hmm...Very important! Women have a slower progression than men. They’ll notice those fine lines first and react. Men on the other hand, instead of a slow progression of fine lines and wrinkles, it will be more like quantum leaps. Developing creases and crinkles long before other parts of the body begin to show aging. The good news is applying eye cream once in a while will help. Lastly, protect your lips. A good lip balm with SPF will help do just that.

There you have it! Like I said, “this one’s for you”. Any change is good, but feeling good about the way your look even better.

And that concludes our show for today. We hope you’ve enjoyed this hour with Jose and Haydee and the YSL team. Come back next week as we bring you the best of Yo Soy Latino.

From YSL to the family of Brigitte Ayala-Torres...
Every once in a while it’s good to take a step back and remind ourselves why we do what we do and this is one of those times.

So before we go on to the highlights of today’s show we would like to take this moment to express to the family of Brigitte Ayala-Torres this simple yet heartfelt message.

There will never be any amount of words to express the sorrow which blankets your hearts right now and yet we at YSL are certain you'll find solace in knowing our Heavenly Father has taken your little girl Brigitte home by the wings of His celestial angels to a place familiar to her, free of pain.

We would like to think that God, being a busy guy, can't always just do or create things as fast as He would like. He looks around to that which He has created and calls them home to help Him do His bidding. He has done so with Brigitte. He wanted someone sparkling filled with the very spirit he desired and called her home. So we will honor her by replacing tears with a positive heart marking her existence every day for the fighter she was and for the many hearts her young life touched—her spunk and willingness to live should mirror our own. Know that our prayers are with you always.

In addition, we wish to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and generosity you’ve shown Brigitte for supporting her cause during a period when her family was desperately seeking a bone marrow donor.

Highlights of Today’s Show

Jose after discussing the matters of the news and a few other topics of concern took a moment to speak with Haydee about Fashion then remains deadlock on the ‘bone’ of the matter. It’s hard to imagine anyone taking corset bones to another plain but Jose did. He worked his explanation so well that he took it to a hilarious new level.

AND, just when things quieted down a bit he introduces the Honorable Linda Stewart who plunges right in and continues the dialogue with him making the onset of the interview lighthearted.

Commissioner Linda Stewart for our listeners who are not aware has been active as a community leader, serving the public for the past seven years on the Board of County Commissioners of District 4. She works tirelessly in finding ways to create jobs here, focusing on issues to improve transportation while addressing the needs of the less fortunate.

When asked in one sentence to describe what her campaign slogan would be? She replied, “It’s a new beginning!” She’s a woman who believes in evoking change. You can reach her at LindaStewartforMayor.com or be her friend on Facebook.

Ms. Stewart will open her new headquarters in the Ft. Gatlin shopping center on August 31st. Also, there will be a kick off ceremony of the new MEADOW WOODS Gymnasium on September 12th. This gymnasium will benefit the community. For more information on Ms. Stewart or other activities going on, call in to her county office and that number is 407-836-5881.

Before wrapping up this hour, Jose goes ahead and gives a prolific introduction to Gino Feliciani, a nine year veteran of the State Attorney’s office and the Division Chief for the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit.

Jose leads Gino in a discussion to clarify a public perception of the state attorney’s office as being the bad guy asking Gino if this is true? Gino responds, “No, it’s unfortunate that we are in this position especially when someone you know or love is charged with a crime. However, we have three goals —firstly, to protect the public, secondly, advocating for victims of crimes and thirdly, advocating justice”.

Another misnomer is that the public can’t reach out to you. How does one get in touch with you? "Our office in particular has actually set up a system of getting prosecutors in the community to help victims of crimes while working closely with law enforcement. We are very visible in the community and our desire and goal is to seek justice".

When asked about the Megan Law / Romeo and Juliet Law. Gino answered, “In Florida and basically any other state you can be designated as a sexual offender or sexual predator”. “In the Romeo law what you’re looking at is at least a 4 years difference in age (16 to 20) and it must be consensual. Then the individual in question can petition and request not to be designated as a sex offender but this is NOT always a given”.

“Once you get labeled as a sex offender the duration is 20 years. However, once labeled a sexual predator that remains for life because the offense is on a small child under the age of 12 or that the act was committed more than once”.

To contact Mr. Feliciani or his office call their direct line 407-665-6201 from Monday thru Friday 8:30-5:00 and your call will be answered by a live person. The main number to the State Attorney’s office is 407-665-6000.

Not everyone thinks of quixotic clothing with the word ‘Goth’, but if you look closely at this trend you will understand that much of the romantic styles are often rooted in gothic dress. This particular trend embraces the free thinking spirit who goes against the mainstream. It represents a style that has no limits. First evolving in the United Kingdom, it has rapidly gain momentum here in the States and because much of this season is black it fits right in.

Gothic dresses are easy to find and combining them with accessories and just the right hair and make-up can give you a look for any occasion. Especially, the jewel tone colors such as dark blue, red, deep purple, green and even gray are a key component and have become more prominent in recent years. Just as the color white helps add a twist.

The simplistic beauty of this fashion is the graceful romantic feel of the garment on your skin—i.e., take a long vinyl, satin, tulle ‘scoop neck’ dress feathering a fitted vinyl dropped waist bodice ending in a delicious gathering of satin and tulle accented by a braided trim or a ribbon hem. Hmm. Guarantee you’ll be making a statement and not an unfaltering one for you’re sure to be a hit at the next black tie affair. Plus, it’s fun and sexy.

You can also take it up a notch by adding goth ‘military’ boots instead of those sexy stilettos--adding comfort to your style. All of which make a bold statement. It's a win - win!

For a casual night out on the town consider a top with a revealing “scoop” neck. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a corset BUT the back of the top can be laced up just with another accent color. Pair it with either black leather pants or a short mini skirt combining the two colors of your top and it will transform you into a voluptuous vixen for the evening. Making your date sit up and take notice.

Fashion is about multiplicity. Taking a look and owning it! You should never restrict designs by stereotypes. It’s ok to embrace your gothic opulence that darkness which lurks within you. The point of embracing and accepting it is to experience the other end of the spectrum, not to isolate only the positive qualities in your life but to reveal your inner ‘she wolf’.

Well, that concludes our show for today. We wish to thank our guests, Commissioner Linda Stewart who will be campaigning for the Mayor’s seat and Gino Feliciani, Division Chief for the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit for spending this hour with us. We also wish to thank our listeners who make it all worthwhile.

Join us next week when we bring you yet another exciting program. Our guests will be Alan Kornman and Vito Esposito of Radio Jihad. God bless and be well.

Highlights of Today’s Show

August 15, 2009

Jose set the pace today for another colorful hour as his comedic presence seemed to fill the walls of the studio as inescapably as the weather. You got the feeling that no matter what happened throughout the course of the show his decorum would never wavered; but, his infectious humor did, which caused everyone in the studio to laugh so hard.

Keeping his lighthearted buoyancy, Jose eases his listeners after delivering the local news, fashion, to the hullabaloo surrounding the heath care issues followed by an array of other concerns to the one and only, the vivacious Denise Diaz of Jobs with Justice.

Unfortunately, Mr. Rene Plasencia, founder of Rene’s Productions, was unable to join us as he had another pressing engagement but did call in to let us know; and, that dear listeners is life in radio.

After her opening, Denise starts by sharing the ideals of Jobs with Justice—a permanent coalition of workers and community organizations building power to secure good jobs and strong communities for the people. This organization develops and implements the organizing, policy, and communication strategies for everyone (student, workers, as well as unions)—campaigning around the working class people statewide promoting change while strengthening the movement for social and economic justice.

Denise said, “It is most challenging here in Florida because we operate under a right to work state”. She expressed one of the biggest issues affecting working people is this reform to affordable health care. Primarily in the Latino community because there appears to be this huge disparity among Hispanics, especially since Latinos have a large percentile in diabetes and most are uninsured.

If you wish to contact Ms. Diaz, she can reach at the CENTRAL FLORIDA JOBS WITH JUSTICE, details below.

Sleek, Tailored, with a twist of Bohemian....
August 15, 2009
We can all agree that this muggy weather has taken its toll of everyone’s senses, especially when one is trying desperately to stay super cool and perky in this sultry climate. And though ‘black’ is HOT, HOT, HOT this season, it can be challenging here in Florida combining great trends.

However, since ‘black’ tends to make up the majority of any woman’s wardrobe perhaps the best way to combat the heat is to blend impressive graphic patterns or pretty prints with your pants, skirts or dresses while maintaining a sleek, tailored, with a twist of bohemian look.

The single-shoulder fashion trend is still picking up considerable momentum from fitted dresses and tops to delicately flowing gowns with Roman-Greek overtures. Bold jewelry remains big this year. We’re seeing more of the precious to semi-precious gems, cut glass, crystal work on jacket, lots of bangles, neck-pieces, earrings, anklets, day-time dresses, coats, tops, and tunics.

Even inner wear has come to the forefront as outer wear, with sleek tights, leggings, stockings becoming a favorite which is bound to transcend way up to 2010. Today’s styles are based on nostalgic basics with a contemporary slant—a no-hassle look.

BUT, as the chilly weather set in, the Over-the-knee or Over-the-thigh boots in stylish suede and leather will definitely be taking center stage at many occasions whether you’re traveling or hanging out.

In so far as fabrics go, you can expect anything from a delicate-weaved, compact, or a multi-weave variety with vivid patterns to gain significant focus this year end. Fabrics like cotton are definitely on the top of the checklist as well as frilly Laces, rich soft materials like velvets, silk, jersey in varied hued shadings will add to the essential delicate womanly touch.

Also, there’s going to be a strong influence in tweeds and checks—with hip prints, varied colored denims all creating a dramatic effect and bound to make a bold statement.

Next week we expect to have as our guests Commissioner Linda Stewart who has announced her candidacy for Orange County Mayor and Gino Feliciani who's the Division Chief for the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit of the State Attorney's office. Gino one can say is at the front of all sexual/abuse crimes. So come back and join us, you never can tell what will happen since this is radio and the unexpected is always expected! Until then, be safe and God bless.

Highlights of Today’s Show
August 8, 2009

Yo Soy Latino had a few oops moments today. The gremlin monster paid YSL a guest appearance; however, we waded thru it and the show went on.

After delivering the local news, trivia and briefly tapping on fashion with Haydee, Jose introduced his listeners to today’s guest, the assiduous proactive Latino, George Torres aka “The Urban Jibaro”. Who is recognized by many as being a cultural activist, radio personality and founder of cultural online magazine Sofrito for your Soul. George tells us he was born and raised between Brooklyn and Bayamon and how he learned to apply the traditional Puerto Rican values with those he learned in the streets of East New York. And for those of you who are not familiar with East New York, it’s definitely an eye opener.

While his roots might be considered by some as burdensome not to this young man for it didn’t hamper or slow him down at all. Over the past 12 years he’s broaden his talents by developing projects that market to the urban Latino utilizing the internet and those locally.

His continued success includes a monthly open mic poetry/cultural showcase in Williamsburg Brooklyn. Something he founded with urban legend PaPo Swiggity from Espacio Latino. He is also a co-host on a radio show called Radio Capicu on Blog Talk Radio. However, it is in Sofrito for your Soul that you can feel and witness his passion. So if you’re into poetry and would like to submit something, (keep it clean it is a family-oriented site) you’re encouraged to send in your unsolicited material to him. You never know what can happen. You might even be discovered.

Clearly, George Torres affectionately known as “The Urban Jibaro” is one Latino on the move, setting his standards high and realizing his potential. His desire to empower the community to promote and document the evolution of Latino culture is commendable and one to be admired. Being from New York ourselves, we can appreciate the need to pass on such a legacy to others.

Now for those of you who are wondering how to contact Mr. Torres. George is easily accessible to anyone who desires to engage in conversation; and, if you wish to share your poetry and have it critiqued. The best way to reach him is online at sofritoforyoursoul.com.

You can also find him on Facebook, don’t be shy reach out! He’s always looking to make new friends. Shifting gears a little, if you get a chance, do listen to the archived shows on blogtalkradio.com/radio-capicu; I guarantee you’ll stay for awhile to enjoy the poetry.

Color it Black...
August 8, 2009
The hottest color this Fall 2009 is none other than your classic black. If you are like most with a soft spot for this color than you don’t have to do much with your wardrobe, except accessorize.

However, you can pull off the latest styles without running amuck at the stores purchasing. If you own several pants, skirts, or jackets that are ‘washable’ and are a dark shade like charcoal, gray, or navy blue, color it black! Just head for your nearest drug store and purchase a box of “black” dye. Not only will you save yourself a bundle but you can create these styles for yourself for a lot less—transforming some of those items within minutes while saving yourself some cash, which I might add you can use for other things like those stilettos you’ve had your eyes on!

Here are a few suggestions to jazz up some of those pieces:

Add a thick black belt. These can be found for cheap at most any department store today. When doing so consider a patent leather belt or a solid leather belt, even a velvet belt for the forthcoming holidays.

Also, big buttons! They are popping up all over, no pun intended. Two labels I think of right away for ideas are the designs of Baby Phat and Pamela Roland.

Take any jacket from your wardrobe. It can instantly give you a tailored look. Pair it off with a colorful printed blouse and maybe even add black beads or pearls with a nice pair of heels and you’re good to go. I know the runway is introducing the new tuxedo jacket but for me it reminds me of the Napoleon Bonaparte era and too masculine. I believe in femininity all the way. BUT, if that’s a style you can carry then by all means embrace it.

And don’t forget your scarves. We are seeing a lot of solid and thick-striped scarves on the runway. Add those to your accessory wardrobe. Moreover, big flowing sleeves are in for Fall 2009, as well as flowing wraps and wool ponchos. You can wear a wrap on its own, or cinch it with a belt and don’t forget LEATHER is big this season. It’s time to bring all your leather pieces out.

Large stones are a bold look. Check your local thrift store. These second hand costume jewelry can be bought for pennies. Instead of big buttons re-use the beads on shirts as a strategic accent by simply stitching the jewelry on. Just don’t over do it, and stick to simply embellishing the collar area.

Fashion really is about fun added by a little experimentation but ultimately it is an expression of your own personal style. So let your hair down feel the wind and be the diva I know you are!

Next week we have a great guest lined up for you, Denise Diaz from Jobs with Justice and Rene Plasencia founder of Rene’s Production, the company that produces and promotes lavish Latin events throughout Central Florida. So come back and join us. Until then, be safe and God bless.

Notes...
Kudos to Sotomayor!
August 6th marked a historical landmark. Not only is it the first time we have an African-American as President of these United States, we now have, because of this same President, a POWERFUL Latina as Supreme Court Justice.

This is a huge! Today she will be officially sworn in to serve on the highest court in the land for the rest of her life or until she steps down. We could well be seeing a change in the way the country acts towards its people from a legal perspective.

Just as Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, this year surely has stirred those dreams in all of us.

We are in fact living through history in the making and we at YSL are privilege to be here to witness it.

Charley's Path
It has been five years since the wrath of Hurricane Charley officially hit the shores of Florida, 8/9/04.

We are still in hurricane season so if you are considering travel during this period carefully consider the potential dangers and inconveniences you will experience. Check your local weather channel before venturing out.

Highlights of Today Show...

Yo Soy Latino was bursting with energy as Jose and the YSL team opened its broadcast covering various topics from local issues to that’s right you guess it, Jose’s favorite stogie picks. Not only was the show entertaining, upbeat and very interactive, it was on the onset of pure aural fun. Making ready to rock its audience with a high energy, power packed interview with this week’s guest, the honorable Senator Bob Graham.

A native to Florida, graduated from Harvard Law, was elected governor from 1979 to 1987 until he ran and was voted in to the Senate. Senator Graham has spent decades as a public servant, both here in Florida and in Washington DC.

While still serving on the legislature, he was asked by a teacher how could he decide on issues concerning various citizens if he didn’t truly understand their jobs or how they did them so he went on to teach students in High School on civics. A training of the next generation of public leaders—getting them engaged with the political system to effect change. His contact with students, parents, teachers, etc. was invaluable.

Since then he has written two books—the first is about “Workdays” which came about during his tenure as governor where he labored at various jobs (several as a radio host) for a full eight-hour day giving him a greater appreciation for the real life of Floridians. To date, he has completed 386 workdays. The second is on “Intelligence Matters” about his role investigating the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

He continues to be sought after for his lecturing abilities by schools, especially his Alma Mata. In addition, he has been a regular contributor and commentator on various radio and television shows, like Fox and PBS. He has written opinion editorials for the Washington Post, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, The Financial Times, St. Petersburg Times, South Florida Sun Sentinel, Miami—the list goes on.

At present, Senator Graham continues to serve on several commissions, one of which is the Commission of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Only recently been appointed to a Congressional Commission to study the Financial Crisis—why it happened and what we should do about it? He is also doing some work for the White House and in a couple of weeks the Senator will lead the U.S. Delegation for the inauguration of a new president of Ecuador.

His latest book “America—The Owner’s Manual” has been out since May. You can get it on Amazon or Barnes and Nobles’ websites. This book is about encouraging people to get out of the stands, stop being a spectator, and start being a participant in a democracy! When a citizen sees a problem they should ask, “What can I do about it—not, where can I unload it.”

Beauty’s only skin deep...
August 1, 2009
Let me frame a picture for you. You’re exquisitely dressed, your hair just right not a strain out of place and just when you’re ready to apply your makeup you notice those small tiny fine lines by the side of your eyes that seemingly hint years gone by; and, as your eyes scroll further down you see the marks of a joyful spirit outlined by the side of your mouth and you wonder, Hmm...When did all this happen while convincing yourself beauty’s only skin deep.

Truth is fashion is not only about the clothing we wear, but how we feel and see ourselves once we slide into that perfect dress and slip on those sexy stylish stilettos.

Today I am going to touch upon some useful hints and tips for those unexpected moments. Now if you’re in your twenties or thirties this doesn’t necessarily apply to you but it doesn’t hurt to start now before you begin to notice those fine lines, especially if you are a beach lover.

There are many moisturizers that promise many things but here’s what I found works for two reasons—first, because each provides skin protection to all skin types and second, they’re inexpensive.

1. Olay Regenerist UV Defense Regenerating Lotion SPF15 provides both UVA and UVB sunscreen and cost about $19.00.

2. Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer also provides SPF15 protection but it’s more for sensitive skin and cost about $17.00.

3. Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel contains an oil-free hydrating formula that feels light and silky on the skin; cost about $24.00.

4. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream contains retinol and a Vitamin A derivative to help reduce those fine lines. It is also oil and fragrance free, cost about $14.00.

5. Revale Skin Night Cream gives you the best results of many of the high-quality moisturizers at the drug stores or on those info-commercials because of its high concentration of coffeeberry extract, an antioxidant, viewed as the most potent of all getting results in as little as three weeks. It’s a bit rich as the cost is about $110 but overall worth it.

Quick Fixes:
If you wake up in the morning after a night out on the town and see bags under your eyes and puffiness above your eye lids, give this a try and don’t laugh, it works! Besides, this is used throughout the fashion world as a proven tool. Apply Preparation H ointment or cream (the cream seems to work better) under the eyes and below the eyebrows. GENTLY rub it in as much as possible, being careful not to get any in the eyes, and let it sit for a while. When you wipe it off, you will see the difference. The bags shrink and the puffiness goes down, giving a younger look.

Here’s a soothing treatment for your hands. If you own a crockpot use it for heating facial towels. Roll a few towels and place them in it adding a drop or two of oil, making sure the oil has a hint of fragrance. When ready remove a towel and apply it to your hands. This will leave your hands touchable and silky soft. Or use it for hot oil treatments for your hair. Great way to pamper yourself!

A trick for your eyebrows when plucking and if you’re like most...it hurts. Dab a little bit of Baby Oral-Gel all along your eyebrows using a paper towel under the brow holding it in place to make certain none of the gel falls into your eyes. Also be careful not to touch your eyes then let it work for about 30 seconds or so and begin to pluck away. Believe me you will not feel the pain. You may want to put a towel underneath while you do this for easy cleanup as not to mess up your sink or countertop.

Vitamins also play a significant role, besides nutritionists and dermatologists say taking vitamins C, E, and A orally as well as topically can lessen the appearance of fine lines by 25%. If your body does not have enough of this, your skin becomes bumpy and wrinkled, and pores tend to increase in size. Try it and see a more youthful you!

As the hour closes, we wish to thank our esteem visitor, Senator Graham, who bought so much to the show; and, to our listeners for stopping by and enjoying that cup of coffee with Jose. We hope you'll join us next week as Jose and the YSL team present as our featured guest the inimitable George L. Torres, known affectionately as “The Urban Jibaro”.
