The Snafu monster paid Yo Soy Latino an unexpected visit today transmitting those opps sounds heard throughout the program. In spite of it, Jose stepped up brilliantly operating the control board like a master and the show continued uninterrupted. Way to go Jose!
This week’s guest surpassed any of our expectations. She is an amazing woman with brains, beauty and style, Dr. Ana Nogales. Jose after welcoming Dr. Nogales to the show covered a wide range of issues from machismo, to racism, to culture, and closing with immigration. But it was her light hearted spirit that made the hour most entertaining.
Dr. Nogales definitely typifies all women driven to make history. She is one incredible powerhouse who encourages Latinas to move beyond their expected roles and become the women they wish to be by embracing that which is inherited naturally from their Latino culture. As a Latina who immigrated to the United States in 1979, she managed to complete her doctorate degree in psychology, open her own practice in California, and has been non-stop every since.
Her involvement in the community has earned her numerous accolades. She has been presented with the Humanitarian Award, the Mentorship Award because of her writing teaching and counseling; and most recently, the Latina Entrepreneur of the Year Award by the Latina Business Women Association on June 2, 2007.
In addition, Dr. Nogales is a frequent guest on The Cristina Show and other programs. She has hosted daily call-in shows for both television and radio. Has written for the last sixteen years in La Opinion (Los Angeles), the country's #1 Spanish language newspaper, and La Raza (Chicago), La Prensa (New York) and her bi-monthly column in the magazine Para Todos.

Grecian Chic! Is definitely IN this season—a trend that is ageless and will have all hail the goddess who dared to grace any room in these Greek-inspired designs. Even Hollywood where celebrities walk the red carpet is responding to this fashion staple. Therefore, we should respond as well!
This design not only has the taste and opulence of ancient Greece, it is a classic look having a logical flow-on from the one-shoulder. The uniqueness of this style is that it graces your form allowing your femininity to shine thru, accenting your figures flawlessly because the arrangements of the folds or pleats act like a shawl-like outer garment, covering the body just a hint while concealing even the smallest imperfection. However, no outfit is complete unless appropriately accessorized from your hair to your footwear. The trick is to keep everything simple. Your makeup should be "natural", not overstated. Your hair in my view should be push back emphasizing the details of your face—your cheeks, your eyes, your mouth. Add a nice hair piece, one that is symbolic of the times, but the dressing of the hair I will leave up to you.
Now invest in some exquisite pieces of jewelry—gold or bronze pieces—concentrate mostly on bracelets and necklaces which were among those ornaments used during this era. Then you'll look like the divine goddess that you are.
With that said, now it's time to reflect on the footwear. Make use of the gladiator sandals which are quite popular this season.
Remember if the dress is plain team it up with ropes or a sash tie to add depth, even texture to your ensemble. It will give your silhouette definition without over emphasizing too much body parts. These Grecian designs will surely guarantee you a chic and feminine summer fashion!

Interview with Maegan "La Mamita Mala" Ortiz

Welcome back to another episode of the Yo Soy Latino show with Jose Miranda as he opens with “second chance is always the best”!
This week’s show definitely had spunk, exuberance, and charm as Jose introduces the vivacious incredible Ms. Maegan “la mamita mala” Ortiz. Born in Queens New York she attributes the beginnings of her activist’s activities to her mentor the late Richie Perez. Who inspired her at the young age of 16 to foster a passion of politics, an awareness of her culture, and a consciousness of the struggles of Latinos which incidentally gave birth to her nick name “mamita mala”.
Her sentiment continued to build up to the voice that is today by the inspiring women in her life who encouraged her to have a say in what’s going on in the world, coupled by her involvement with a young radical group known as the Young Lords, to an awareness of police violence, racial violence and the long time struggles of young people who need to get involve and address issues that affect them now. Being outspoken naturally became a way of life.
Maegan is a remarkable Latina! She is a woman who’s not afraid to speak her mind regardless of the controversy. She illustrates this in her poetry and in her writing. As a single mother of 2 daughters she encourages her daughters to be all they can be. She is co-owner of 2 Mujeres Media which publishes the popular daily Latino blog VivirLatino. Once again Jose delivered yet another spectacular program from the introduction to the interviews to the closing of the show. He remains unstoppable yet totally entertaining engaging his guests and the YSL crew in all sorts of topics.
These are interesting times, for many it is downright deep into frightful but one thing is certain you own it.
As the hour unfolds, Jose spotlights the turnout of Friday’s “Day for protest on Immigration” which was disappointing low and reflective upon the way the U.S.A. is going about pursuing this problem. The crisis won’t go away and the solution it’s not about putting up walls and closing our borders. Neither is our current issue on influenza, the swine flu. In some cases is just the common cold. We just can’t go around narrowing the source to one culture.
It was definitely a conversational starter and a great way to open the show. Then Jose revisits the ongoing concerns alleged by the NAACP and their diligence to convolute issues enough so that Hispanics continue to be blame for the lack of other minorities not being hired in the venues though no clear numbers are being presented. Before we begin playing the “BLAME GAME” let’s wait for the facts to become known.
Continuing the flow of the show, Jose makes ready to reintroduce a guest whose interview was cut short last week. It’s none other than Jim Colucci of Atladis. The conversation goes from embargo cigars, to counterfeiting, to the origins of bands on cigars all the way to the Federal taxes.
Jim offered a possible recommendation to cigar smokers. One way to combat another tax increase is to write to your state legislative official and ask them to take another look. Re-examine the issue and stop taxing tobacco, perhaps reflecting on other products. Possibly consider an “evaluated tax” instead—a slight tax that can be placed on all consumer goods, without hurting one industry. And there you have it, a very intense yet illuminating conversation with Jim Colucci. Thank you Mr. Colucci! Welcome back to another adventure of The Yo Soy Latino Show as your host Jose Miranda looks at the cigar industry, the new imposed taxation, its affect on consumers and the cigar industry overall.
Today’s guest needs no introduction as he is well known in the cigar industry. He’s none other than James Colucci Executive Vice President for Altadis USA and joining him is Janelle Rosenfeld Vice President of Communications.
But before Jose makes the introduction, he begins to discuss the facts of the day then cracks down on the matter concerning a 40 year old statute surrounding the board of education in Orange County and why only four Hispanics banded together to protest the lack of inclusion of Hispanics on this important issue. What happened to the rest of the Hispanic community are there only 4 people who this concerns?
Forty-five years ago during the beginnings of the civil rights movement a statute was mandated in Orange County, which required that a panel consisting of 5 black and 5 white people be formed to insure a balance with the Board of Education. Somewhere along this long path the idea was abandoned or at the very least placed into limbo. Times have changed and the Hispanic community has henceforth become the growing majority. To have four representatives as the single attendees boycotting for the Latin community was an outrage.
“This is Florida and change does not come easy but a statute like this affects everyone”. “The need to stand together as a community is crucial,” said Jose. These are thorny issues here in the south and there is a lot of emotion and memory involved something that is clearly lost with this host. You could hear the raw mixture of emotions as he spoke to his listeners. This is a topic which will be revisited as the issue winds itself thru the education system.
Yo Soy Latino switches gears to discuss fashion, specifically men’s fashion and Jose introduces his YSL guru Haydee to the forum along with John K. to which they discuss trends and the metro sexual look.
Jose then warms up his listeners to the theme of the day “TALKING CIGARS” as he introduces Mr. James Colucci Executive Vice President of Altadis USA. Altadis USA is the largest manufacturer of cigars in the United States and part of the Altadis S.A. Group, the largest maker and marketer of cigars in the world. Mr. Colucci has spent 35 years in the cigar industry so he is no novice to the business.
Jose gives kudos’s to Jim and Altadis USA for their support to our Marines and military now serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Being a Vietnam veteran himself he was pleased to learn that such generosities for our troops are prevalent, especially when they are so far away from home. Jim also mentioned that they have a promotion in place that when you buy 3 of their cigars the fourth is free and one will be sent to our troops. So keep that in mind when you’re buying cigars.
Then began the questions and answers as Jose asked what turned the industry around. Jim explained that in 1964 the industry peaked after the surgeon general’s report that smoking was hazardous to your health. It wasn’t until 1994 that the cigar industry started experiencing a Renaissance mainly because it’s a lifestyle and it’s more of a relaxation thing. Though more women are smoking cigars it is only 1% of the cigar market.
Jim enlightened YSL on how the tax being levied on cigars right now is being passed on to consumers. Some of the things that affect the pricing on cigars can vary. Depending on the packaging to the quality of the cigars, from wrappers which are expensive to the aging process of the tobacco all these things will add to the cost of the cigar.
Jose asked what are some myths surrounding the Cuban cigar. Jim responded, “There are no myths but if you’re asking are they the forbidden fruit or are they the best it will depend on whether you like Cuban cigars”. “There are good and bad in all cigars”. “Just like another myth is the association of unsavory characters to cigars as well as the sexual connotations”.

Whether it’s work or play Latin styles are definitely romantic, hot and sexy. It’s more than just clothes it’s an attitude, a feeling which comes from within allowing you to express your personal stylishness and makes you feel more confident. It’s a mixture of various individual traditions with an emphasis on style and colors, yes colors!
In keeping with this week’s theme we are going to look at fashion for the Latin Men and the use of bold colors like yellow, red, orange, green, and bright blue as well as your classic black, which are a staple of the Latin community’s style.
For the cigar aficionado when considering a more dapper neat yet smart casual look pick up a classic Guayabera shirt (any color) add a nice loose fitted pant (your classic black or beige) with some fine leather sandals (no sox as you feet were meant to breathe) top it off with a Fedora hat and WALLA!!! You’re the hit of the day. It’s fun and free flowing.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Guayabera shirt it is similar to a barbershop shirt but you can distinguished it by several details—two or four patch pockets in the front and two vertical rows of fine tiny pleats sewn together and running along the front and back of the shirt. It was traditionally worn in white and pastels but are now available in many other colors.
And for an evening on the town consider a black tailored spring suit, a bold color shirt not your classic white and blend it with a very daring color silk necktie—yellow, red, green even strips of the same color then add a sophisticated yet classic Trilby Hat (similar to the Fedora but more stylish) and slip on some trendy dressy men’s shoes and suddenly you’ve been transformed, giving yourself a more discriminate look.
With your ensemble complete, the only thing that remains is a fine cigar. So fire up enjoy that cigar your company and that fine glass of cognac with a coke chaser.

Saturday’s show had a digest of elements reflecting on past issues, focusing on Immigration while adding a segment on fashion to the hour. It was definitely the right time for a lively mix of topics.
Jose with his witty sense of humor was both entertaining and energetic despite his lack of morning coffee. This week’s show was designed to keep his listeners up to speed on the day’s theme as his esteem guests, attorneys Steen Brown and John Barry, delivered invaluable information on Immigration.
Immigration has become a HOT button issue today more so than before because of the current market worldwide. Once again Jose delivered yet another spectacular program from the introduction to the interviews to the closing of the show. He remains unstoppable yet totally entertaining engaging his guests and the YSL crew in all sorts of topics.
These are interesting times, for many it is downright deep into frightful but one thing is certain you own it.
As the hour unfolds, Jose spotlights the turnout of Friday’s “Day for protest on Immigration” which was disappointing low and reflective upon the way the U.S.A. is going about pursuing this problem. The crisis won’t go away and the solution it’s not about putting up walls and closing our borders. Neither is our current issue on influenza, the swine flu. In some cases is just the common cold. We just can’t go around narrowing the source to one culture.
It was definitely a conversational starter and a great way to open the show. Then Jose revisits the ongoing concerns alleged by the NAACP and their diligence to convolute issues enough so that Hispanics continue to be blame for the lack of other minorities not being hired in the venues though no clear numbers are being presented. Before we begin playing the “BLAME GAME” let’s wait for the facts to become known.
Continuing the flow of the show, Jose makes ready to reintroduce a guest whose interview was cut short last week. It’s none other than Jim Colucci of Atladis. The conversation goes from embargo cigars, to counterfeiting, to the origins of bands on cigars all the way to the Federal taxes.
Jim offered a possible recommendation to cigar smokers. One way to combat another tax increase is to write to your state legislative official and ask them to take another look. Re-examine the issue and stop taxing tobacco, perhaps reflecting on other products. Possibly consider an “evaluated tax” instead—a slight tax that can be placed on all consumer goods, without hurting one industry. And there you have it, a very intense yet illuminating conversation with Jim Colucci. Thank you Mr. Colucci! Welcome back to another adventure of The Yo Soy Latino Show as your host Jose Miranda looks at the cigar industry, the new imposed taxation, its affect on consumers and the cigar industry overall.
Today’s guest needs no introduction as he is well known in the cigar industry. He’s none other than James Colucci Executive Vice President for Altadis USA and joining him is Janelle Rosenfeld Vice President of Communications.
But before Jose makes the introduction, he begins to discuss the facts of the day then cracks down on the matter concerning a 40 year old statute surrounding the board of education in Orange County and why only four Hispanics banded together to protest the lack of inclusion of Hispanics on this important issue. What happened to the rest of the Hispanic community are there only 4 people who this concerns?
Forty-five years ago during the beginnings of the civil rights movement a statute was mandated in Orange County, which required that a panel consisting of 5 black and 5 white people be formed to insure a balance with the Board of Education. Somewhere along this long path the idea was abandoned or at the very least placed into limbo. Times have changed and the Hispanic community has henceforth become the growing majority. To have four representatives as the single attendees boycotting for the Latin community was an outrage.
“This is Florida and change does not come easy but a statute like this affects everyone”. “The need to stand together as a community is crucial,” said Jose. These are thorny issues here in the south and there is a lot of emotion and memory involved something that is clearly lost with this host. You could hear the raw mixture of emotions as he spoke to his listeners. This is a topic which will be revisited as the issue winds itself thru the education system.
Yo Soy Latino switches gears to discuss fashion, specifically men’s fashion and Jose introduces his YSL guru Haydee to the forum along with John K. to which they discuss trends and the metro sexual look.
Jose then warms up his listeners to the theme of the day “TALKING CIGARS” as he introduces Mr. James Colucci Executive Vice President of Altadis USA. Altadis USA is the largest manufacturer of cigars in the United States and part of the Altadis S.A. Group, the largest maker and marketer of cigars in the world. Mr. Colucci has spent 35 years in the cigar industry so he is no novice to the business.
Jose gives kudos’s to Jim and Altadis USA for their support to our Marines and military now serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Being a Vietnam veteran himself he was pleased to learn that such generosities for our troops are prevalent, especially when they are so far away from home. Jim also mentioned that they have a promotion in place that when you buy 3 of their cigars the fourth is free and one will be sent to our troops. So keep that in mind when you’re buying cigars.
Then began the questions and answers as Jose asked what turned the industry around. Jim explained that in 1964 the industry peaked after the surgeon general’s report that smoking was hazardous to your health. It wasn’t until 1994 that the cigar industry started experiencing a Renaissance mainly because it’s a lifestyle and it’s more of a relaxation thing. Though more women are smoking cigars it is only 1% of the cigar market.
Jim enlightened YSL on how the tax being levied on cigars right now is being passed on to consumers. Some of the things that affect the pricing on cigars can vary. Depending on the packaging to the quality of the cigars, from wrappers which are expensive to the aging process of the tobacco all these things will add to the cost of the cigar.
Jose asked what are some myths surrounding the Cuban cigar. Jim responded, “There are no myths but if you’re asking are they the forbidden fruit or are they the best it will depend on whether you like Cuban cigars”. “There are good and bad in all cigars”. “Just like another myth is the association of unsavory characters to cigars as well as the sexual connotations”.

Whether it’s work or play Latin styles are definitely romantic, hot and sexy. It’s more than just clothes it’s an attitude, a feeling which comes from within allowing you to express your personal stylishness and makes you feel more confident. It’s a mixture of various individual traditions with an emphasis on style and colors, yes colors!
In keeping with this week’s theme we are going to look at fashion for the Latin Men and the use of bold colors like yellow, red, orange, green, and bright blue as well as your classic black, which are a staple of the Latin community’s style.
For the cigar aficionado when considering a more dapper neat yet smart casual look pick up a classic Guayabera shirt (any color) add a nice loose fitted pant (your classic black or beige) with some fine leather sandals (no sox as you feet were meant to breathe) top it off with a Fedora hat and WALLA!!! You’re the hit of the day. It’s fun and free flowing.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Guayabera shirt it is similar to a barbershop shirt but you can distinguished it by several details—two or four patch pockets in the front and two vertical rows of fine tiny pleats sewn together and running along the front and back of the shirt. It was traditionally worn in white and pastels but are now available in many other colors.
And for an evening on the town consider a black tailored spring suit, a bold color shirt not your classic white and blend it with a very daring color silk necktie—yellow, red, green even strips of the same color then add a sophisticated yet classic Trilby Hat (similar to the Fedora but more stylish) and slip on some trendy dressy men’s shoes and suddenly you’ve been transformed, giving yourself a more discriminate look.
With your ensemble complete, the only thing that remains is a fine cigar. So fire up enjoy that cigar your company and that fine glass of cognac with a coke chaser.

Saturday’s show had a digest of elements reflecting on past issues, focusing on Immigration while adding a segment on fashion to the hour. It was definitely the right time for a lively mix of topics.
Jose with his witty sense of humor was both entertaining and energetic despite his lack of morning coffee. This week’s show was designed to keep his listeners up to speed on the day’s theme as his esteem guests, attorneys Steen Brown and John Barry, delivered invaluable information on Immigration.
Immigration has become a HOT button issue today more so than before because of the current market worldwide. This has only aggravated the situation further having the ICE police (Immigration Customs Enforcement) running around town looking for the flood of refugee entering the United States illegally. These influxes are not isolated to just one group but to people from all countries though the Hispanics do make up a large portion of this.

JOSE REVISITED THE GROWING CONCERNS OF OUR ECONOMY FOCUSING ON THE NATION’S OVERALL UNEMPLOYMENT RISE TO 8.1% IN FEBRUARY. HOWEVER, HERE IN METRO ORLANDO COUNTIES LIKE LAKE, ORANGE, OSCEOLA, AND SEMINOLE ITS FIGURE LEAPED TO 9%, THE WORSE RATE IN 32 YEARS.
AND, FOR ALL YOU WOMEN OUT THERE, IF YOU HAVE A CAPITAL IDEA NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE. WE MAY HAVE COME TO THE PARTY LATE LAGGING BEHIND OUR MALE COUNTERPARTS BUT OUR VISIONS ARE JUST AS VITAL TO THE ECONOMY—HELP MAKE A DENT.
